Dr. Samuel Wilson McKee1,2,3

M, #380, b. 3 November 1817, d. 4 July 1890
FatherIsaac McKee4 b. 20 Jul 1788, d. fr 24 Aug 1842 - 1844
MotherNancy Janet "Jane" Richmond4 b. 15 Dec 1790, d. a 12 Jul 1860
Last Edited9 Mar 2025
Birth*Samuel, son of Isaac McKee and Nancy Janet "Jane" Richmond, was born on 3 November 1817 in Tennessee. Birthstate of Tennessee seems well established. The county is much less clear. Loving writes, "I have always heard that our grandfather Dr. Samuel Wilson McKee came to Texas from Carrol County, Tenn. but the note we found in the old 'Mrs. A. McKee' Bible and other information I have, gives Obion county, Tenn". Either way, the county from which he left for Texas may have nothing to do with his birth county.
The 1850, 1860 & 1870 Federal Censuses suggest he was born 1818±1; the 1880 Federal says 1817±1; Shaw says 1818 in TN; our 1850 extract is unclear on birthstate. Ancestry claims Carroll County but I suspect it originated from other sources.5,2,6,4
BaptismSamuel was baptized on 1 November 1828 in Troy, Obion Co., Tennessee.2
Census1830Samuel is probably the male age 10 to 14 listed in the household of his father, Isaac McKee, in the 1830 Federal Census of Carroll Co., Tennessee.7
Move*Samuel moved his residence from his father's home to an unknown location on 2 December 1837. The new location was within 2 days travel time because he began the study of medicine there on 4 December.2
Education*He was a student of medicine at an unknown location near Troy, Obion, Tennessee on 4 December 1837. The Bible record reads in part, Left his father's hous 2 December 1837. Entered on the study of medicine 4 December 1837.5,2
Census1840Samuel is probably one of the three males age 20 to 29 listed in the household of his father, Isaac McKee, in the 1840 Federal Census of Gibson Co., Tennessee.8
Arrivals*Dr. Samuel Wilson McKee arrived at Republic of Texas circa 10 November 1841. GLO file 000051 gives his entry date into the Republic as 15 Nov. First Settlers has incorrectly transcribed this as 5 Nov. Shaw repeats the error. The unconditional certificate of file 000185 simply says Nov 1841, without giving a specific date. The Loving Bible citation gives 7 Nov 1841. Also, Shaw shows this as an arrival in Bowie County. That is not necessarily true. The immigration date in the land grant documents only refers to arrival in the Republic, but not specifically any one county. It was possible and common to receive a grant in a county where you did not currently live.9,10,2,11,12
LandGrant*Samuel Wilson was issued Conditional Certificate no. 88, a 4th class headright grant for 320 acres, 14 April 1842 by the Board of Land Commissioners at Boston, Bowie Co., Republic of Texas.

What circumstantial evidence do I have?
On the Births page of the J A "Jimmie McKee Bible Records, S632, we find in order Isaac & wife Jane, son Daniel & wife Sarah, then 9 of the 10 children of Daniel & Sarah. Tying Sam to brother Daniel would be a good step.
The Deaths page again lists Daniel & Sarah, with 8 of their children and one unknown Florine McKee.
On the Marriages page are found two records. Sam's brother Daniel & Sarah, and Sam's nephew Samuel J McKee & Ida Scears.
On the Memoranda page are found five death records - Sam's brother J R McKee, his brother-in-law Frank Wood, Sam himself, his brother A A McKee, and his sister M A Wood.
In the 1860 census Sam's widowed mother Jane McKee is living next door to Sam & Cynthia in the W & R Woodward home. On the other side of Woodward are Sam's sister & brother-in-law Mary Ann & Frank Woods.
However, Sam's brother Daniel E McKee is well shown to be son of Isaac & Jane in .38

FatherDaniel Vincent Jr.1,4 b. 27 Sep 1806, d. 6 Jun 1885
MotherHester Ann Ellis4,5 b. c 1811, d. fr 11 Mar 1851 - 14 Jul 1860
Last Edited27 Aug 2024
Birth*Clarissa, daughter of Daniel Vincent Jr. and Hester Ann Ellis, was born on 6 January 1838 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. Pioneers says Margaret Murphy was Clarissa's mother but the dates clearly make that impossible. The 1880, '70 & '60 censuses confirm ca. 1838 in Ohio. Her father's will calls her Clara P. Bartlett, but doesn't give Dwight's first name.3,6,7
Census1840Clarissa is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Daniel Vincent Jr., in the 1840 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio.8
Census1850Clarissa appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Green, Hamilton Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Daniel Vincent Jr. and Hester Ann Ellis, as 12 yo Clarissa P Vincent.9
Marriage*She married Dwight David Bartlett, son of Amos Aaron Bartlett and Susanna Sexton, on 6 January 1856.10,1,11
Census1860Clarissa and Dwight appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Paris Twp., Edgar Co., Illinois, enumerated 20 June 1860, as 44 yo farmer Dwight & 22 yo Clara Bartlett. Their daughter Cora Ann was listed as living with them.12
Census1870Clarissa and Dwight appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 20 June 1870, as 54 yo farmer David & 32 yo Clarra Bartlet (indexed Bartles). Their children Cora Ann, Margaret Elma "Maggie", John Logan and Charles Francis were listed as living with them.13
Estate-WillClarissa was named an heir in the will of Daniel Vincent Jr., her father, dated 27 April 1878 at Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, to receive land.14,1
Census1880*Clarissa and Dwight appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 11 June 1880, as 63 yo farmer Dwight & 42 yo Clara P Vincent. Their children Cora Ann, Margaret Elma "Maggie", John Logan and Charles Francis were listed as living with them. Dwight was farming, Clara keeping house, Cora teaching school, and the other children at home or attending school.15
Census1900*Clarissa appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 62 yo widow farmer Clara Bartlett. Her children John Logan and Charles Francis were listed as living with her, as well as her 22 yo daughter-in-law Rosa Bartlett.16,7
Residence*Clarissa and Charles resided at 3398 Hillside Ave in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in 1902.11
Death*Clarissa died on 27 July 1908 in Huntington Park, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 70.6
Burial*She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale) in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California. Find A Grave provides NO headstone photo.6
ResearchNote*Research Note re Vincent headstones at Shiloh. There are two Vincent headstones in the Shiloh Churchyard Cemetery of children of Daniel and Hester Ann Vincent. One, Archelauss, died 1837 at age 2. He, naturally, is not listed in the 1850 Census. The other, Tyler Harrison, died in 1862 at age 21. He is in the 1850 Census as age 9. Other persons listed in the 1850 Census, besides Daniel, are 1) Hester A. 25 f Ohio, 2) Priscillia 19 f Ohio, 3) Clarissa P. 12 f Ohio, 4) Winfield S. 6 m Ohio, and 5) Martha J. 3 f Ohio. It is most unlikely that Hester Ann bore Archelauss and Tyler at age 10 and 16 respectively. It also seems unlikely that both have the wrong mother listed on their headstones. The best resolution is that Hester's age is listed wrong on the 1850 Census. I can't be sure Hester Ann is Clarissa Ann's mother just yet.
There is another headstone in the Shiloh Cemetery which confuses the issue. It reads: Margaret Vincent, b.1 May 1806, d. 26 Jan 1903, wife of Daniel, dau of Robert & Sarah Murphy. Is this Daniel's first wife? second wife? Clarissa's mother? Or is there another Daniel? Our Daniel's father was also named Daniel but he died in 1806 so it's not him. Perhaps a probate record will clear up the question. I don't know when or where Clarissa died or anything else about her. She is mentioned in Hibner on p. 110 as wife of Dwight.

MotherMiriam Marsh2,1 b. 18 Jun 1743, d. 26 Jan 1822
Last Edited19 Feb 2025
Birth*Amos, son of Adoniram Bartlett and Miriam Marsh, was born on 28 May 1762 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Pease claims 27 May.3,4,5
BaptismAmos was baptized on 28 July 1762 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.6,2
Marr-Banns*Intentions of marriage for Amos Aaron Bartlett and Lucy Merrit were published on 29 October 1787 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.7,8,9,5
Census1790Amos Aaron appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 21300 as 16+ yo Amos Bartlet. His wife Lucy, son Chester, and daughter Clarissa are probably the people enumerated with him. One female is unknown and the other male 16+ is uncertain. It could be one of Amos' or Miriam's brothers, among others.10
Census1800Amos Aaron appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 4101-2002 as 26-44 yo Amos Bartlet. It's a near perfect fit. Clarissa is one bracket too young and the female 26-44 is unknown. Perhaps a sister - Miriam, Sarah or Hannah.11
Estate-WillAmos was named an heir in the will of Adoniram Bartlett, his father, dated 11 May 1805 at Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, receiving one dollar.12
Census1810Amos Aaron appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 0021-0021 as 26-44 yo Amos Bartlet. Amos is one bracket too young. The children are perfect. But who is the female 26-44? Lucy cleary has died in 1808. She and Amos were married 1787 so no one in this family fits the bill. Is it one of Amos' sisters, perhaps Sarah?13
Marr-Banns*Intentions of marriage for Amos Aaron Bartlett and Susanna Sexton were published on 5 May 1811 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.14,7,8
Census1820*Amos Aaron appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 200001-1011 as >45 yo Amos Bartlet. Who is the female 16-25 yo?15
Census1830Amos Aaron appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 002000001-00011001 as 60-69 yo Amos Bartlet. Problems - Susannah is one bracket too young but only viable explanation for this entry. Has Isaac Chauncy already died? Who is female 50-59?16
Death*Amos died on 11 December 1834 in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 72.8,5
