M, #165, b. 3 September 1823, d. 10 August 1903
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 22 July 2012 re George's parents. Showing Daniel & Mary as the parents of 165 George Myers is circumstantial. Sources in support are the Myers-Wilson marriage, the 1830 & 1840 censuses, and brothers as neighbors in the 1870 census. I find no evidence directly linking Daniel & Mary to George. J Weger's GenForum entry claims that George is son of Joseph Myers and Polly Sefrit, but if you follow those two online it becomes apparent that most people believe their son George was born 1846 and m. Clarissa Hackler. Assertion that it was our George was by Jo Weger who I've been unable to contact by email. Her posting was in 2001 in response to a post by Peter Vandegrift.4,6 |
Birth* | George, son of Daniel Myers and Mary Wilson, was born on 3 September 1823 in Sumner Co., Tennessee. Middle name: wife Catherine's Find A Grave entry says George's middle name was Washington as do several Ancestry Trees (Myers-Uhlman, Carsonpj, etc.) I find no primary evidence supporting any middle name. Birthstate: Kentucky per the 1850 & 1870 censuses, Asa's 1910 Kansas census. Tennessee per Find A Grave, Eliza's death certificate, William's death certificate, the 1880 census, the 1900 censuses of 3 of George's children. Illinois: Martha's death cert per informant brother George.7,8,1,3,2 |
Census1830 | George is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Daniel Myers, in the 1830 Federal Census of Allen Co., Kentucky.9 |
Census1840 | George is probably one of the three males age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Daniel Myers, in the 1840 Federal Census of Allen Co., Kentucky.10 |
Marr-License | George applied for a marriage license to wed Catherine Andereck at Marion Co., Illinois, on 3 December 1844.11 |
Marriage* | He married Catherine Andereck, daughter of Isaac Andereck and Martha McClelland, on 5 December 1844 in Marion Co., Illinois, recorded in Vol. A, p. 19. Find A Grave lists two unknown children, Permillia E (?-1858), and Sarah C (?-1857), but none of the six that we do show.12,11,13,14 |
Census1850 | George and Catherine appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Marion Co., Illinois, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 26 yo farmer George & 23 yo Catharine Myers. Their children Martha Ann and Isaac Benjamin were listed as living with them.15 |
Census1850 | George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Marion Co., Illinois, as a neighbor of his brother-in-law & sister Matthew W. Wagoner and Anna Myers, enumerated three doors below.16 |
Census1870* | George and Catherine appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Sandoval Twp., Marion Co., Illinois, enumerated 22 June 1870, as 46 yo farmer George & 43 yo Catharine Myers. Their children Isaac Benjamin, William L., Andrew Jack, George Washington and Eliza Jane were listed as living with them, as well as one domestic servant. The household above is 57 yo James McClelland (relationship unclear) and above that is George's brother 38 yo Daniel Myers with 73 yo Martha Andrick (Catherine's mother) in the home.17 |
ResearchNote | Research Note of 28 May 2020 re possible m2 Kerilla Watts. The Myers-Uhlmann tree claims George m2 Kerilla Watts in 1873 but provides no source. It's true there's a Kerilla Watts Myers, wife of George Myers, at Find A Grave but there's no indication that this George is the same person or even a close relative. There are a lot of men named George Myers in Illinois around that time. The Myers-Uhlman link is Charles D Myers (TMG 9914) & Marie Uhlman (TMG 9916.)18 |
Census1880* | George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Odin Twp., Marion Co., Illinois, enumerated 7 June 1880, as 56 yo farmer George Myers. His children Martha Ann, William L., Andrew Jack, George Washington and Eliza Jane were listed as living with him, as well as 19 yo helper Maggie Troute. Maggie and AJ were married the same year.19 |
Move | George moved his residence from Marion Co., Illinois to Allen Co., Kansas circa September 1880, accompanied by his children Martha, Will, Jack, George and Eliza Jane. Eliza's obit says 'fall of 1890' but it's clearly a typo based on later info and other sources. It should have said 'fall of 1880'. Her brother Will's obit, directly below Martha's, does says 1880.20,21 |
Residence* | George resided in Allen Co., Kansas, on 7 February 1884.22 |
CensusNF1* | George appeared on the 1885 Kansas State Census of Ozark Twp., Allen Co., Kansas, enumerated 1 March 1885, as 61 yo widower Geo Myers. His children William L. and Andrew Jack were listed as living with him, along with Andrew's 23 yo wife M A and 4 yo daughter D M Myers.23 |
CensusNF1 | George appeared on the 1895 Kansas state census of Osage Twp., Allen Co., Kansas, in the household of Andrew Jack Myers and Maggie Troute, as 65 yo Geo Myers.24 |
Census1900 | George appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Osage Twp., Allen Co., Kansas, as as 76 yo widower father George Myer in the household of his son & daughter-in-law Andrew Jack Myers and Maggie Troute; as 41 yo farmer A J & 39 yo wife Mag Myers.25 |
Death* | George died on 10 August 1903 at age 79. Wrote to Allen County clerk on 26 Nov 1989 for death certificate; response: "none located".7,8 |
Burial* | He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Mildred, Allen Co., Kansas. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.7,8 |

BioNote* | Biography Note: The following anecdote is from a conversation between Zella and grandson Eric Vandegrift. Circa 1918 Zella's sister Mae was a supervisor at the phone company in Nowata. Zella lied about her age and got a job working there as a switchboard operator. She got into frequent trouble, shooting off her mouth at customers, but because she was fast and her sister was a supervisor she didn't get fired. Later she became a licensed hairdresser. She ran her own shop until the 1970s. Zella and Cliff Gibson went to New York City to welcome June and Harry back to the states after one of their tours in Europe. When they got back to Oklahoma they informed everyone that they had been married in NYC. They were divorced a couple of weeks later. Zella died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 28, 1989. She was at home in Langley, Washington. She had been to a birthday party for Blair on Saturday the 11th. She was well and had a fine time. She had plans for next year's garden. As usual, she had a quilt in progress and was nearing completion of the latest one. Zella missed Thanksgiving dinner at the farm. She was ill with the flu. Dad said she had been pretty sick for a couple of days. The morning of the 28th she waved to a neighbor on the road and appeared in good health and spirits. Marie Eicher wrote me shortly after Zella's death saying, Thank you for calling to tell me of your grandmother's death. It's sad. I called my sister, Mary, who also had corresponded with her through the years. As we talked, we both felt a real sense of loss. Although we rarely saw her, she was always there and we heard from her throughout the years - and always at Christmas. We remembered her visits to us when we were children. Mary said, 'I'll always remember her as the most elegant lady I ever knew' - and she really was. She was always impeccably dressed in clothes from wonderful shops (that we were far too poor in those days to even think of entering!). We thought there was something really magic about all that! When my father was killed she really brought some comfort to us when she came to the funeral. We had expected Aunt June to be the 'strong one', but she was as shocked & overcome as we were & it was Aunt Zella who stepped in to really encourage us thru that time. I'm really thankful for the memories we have of her. Zella was cremated and her ashes flown to Nowata, OK. Immediate cause of death, according to her death certificate, was cardiac arrest due to atherosclerosis. Zella smoked cigarettes her entire life.28 |
SSN* | On 15 December 1936 her Social Security Number was 441-10-9539.29,30,31 |

BioNote* | Biography Note of from July 1945 to January 1946: Vandegrift's letter to Downey, in part, re his experiences in the last months of WWII: I arrived on Luzon by air from New Caledonia in July just before the campaign there ended. Our outfit was to stay there to prepare for the coming invasion of Japan. I worked pretty hard installing radioteletype transmitters in trucks for mobile work. Then came V-J Day, and we had to work 24 hours a day to finish preparing for a 'peacetime' invasion of Honshu. I left Luzon Sept 14th on one of the 500 ships in the convoy. The advance echelon of my outfilt landed Sept 25 at Wakayama behind the infantry divisions of the Sixth Army. I operated a radio station at Wakayama for a couple of days, then moved into Kobe immediately after the infantry point. Then the real work began... I wish I could tell you more of the landing at Wakayama because it is something I'll remember until my dying day. It was just like any invasion you have read about, only lacking the firepower. We had to land at Wakayama instead of Osaka and Kobe as planned because of the mines in the harbor. The beach at Wakayama was about a mile and a half long, very sandy, and it was lined with LSTs unloading troops and supplies. The sand on the beach was pretty deep, and lots of the vehicles were getting stuck, and there were bulldozers by the dozens doing nothing but pulling them out of the sand. As soon as one LST finished unloading, another would beach itself, the huge doors would open, the ramp would come down, and men and vehicles would spew out on the beach, and disappear in all directions. There were thousands of cases of food and ammunition, and every imaginable item stacked along the beach. Out in the harbor as far as the eye could reach, ships were anchored, up anchoring, lowering the anchor, and moving about in an orderly manner. To a layman it would seem that confusion was rampant, but every ship had a certain minute to hit the beach, so long to unload, and move out again. There were a few mishaps, which was only natural in an undertaking as large as that, but as far as I know no serious accidents. We saw very few Japanese those first few days because most of them had taken off for the hills out of fear of the 'invaders'. Slowly the people realized that the American troops weren't there to hurt them, or molest the women, and slowly they began their trek down out of the mountains... All those stories of the devastation here are true. Dozens of city blocks are flat, and I do mean flat. The rubble was still in the streets where the Japs hadn't yet had time to clean it up. Several times as we passed the burnt and demolished buildings we were almost nauseated from the sweet sickening odor of bodies which no one had taken the time or troupble to dig out and bury. Among Pete's artifacts are his military service ribbons and badges. They consist of WWII Victory Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Phillipine Liberation Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign WWII medal, and American Campaign Medal.16,15 |
