MotherChristian "Kitty" Keen4 b. 1810, d. 10 Aug 1861
Last Edited28 Aug 2024
Birth*Charles, son of John Francis Blair and Christian "Kitty" Keen, was born in 1832 in Virginia. Reed & Blair claim 1832, Williams 1831 in Virginia; the 1870 & '80 censuses confirm ca 1832-3 & state.5,6,7,8
Census1840Charles is probably one of the two males age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, John Francis Blair, in the 1840 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.9
Census1850Charles appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, John Francis Blair and Christian "Kitty" Keen, as 18 yo Charles W Blair.10
ResearchNote*Research Note of 3 August 2018 re the wives of Charles W Blair. There are a lot of unaswered questions about Charles and his four wives. Each marriage makes sense and is pretty well documented, but the overall picture has a lot of holes. Tracking the wives and children has not been very productive. If anyone has good sources to fill in the details I'd love to hear from you.

Marriage*His first marriage was to Martha Jane "Patsy" Guerrant on 8 November 1853 at Virginia. Patsy was with the Blairs on the move to Texas. Williams writes, 'At twenty-three, Patsy Guerrant Blair was the youngest of the four women and the most likely to be saddened by a discussion of babies. Two-year-old Peter sat listless on her lap, constantly ill, looking drawn and pale. Eleven-month-old Emma had died less than a year before, so she and Charley had just the one child to show for their five years of marriage'.11,12,13
MoveCharles joined the move of his parents from Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Virginia Point, Grayson Co., Texas from 15 November 1858 to 15 January 1859.14,15,16,17
Milit-Service*1st Sgt. Charles William Blair served as a 1st Sergeant with Sylvanus Howell's 11th Texas Field Battery, Texas Light Artillery during the Civil War beginning in May 1862. He enlisted this date with his brother George. NPS writes, "Howell's Battery was organized during the spring of 1862. The unit primarily served in the Indian Territory attached to the Trans-Mississippi Department. It reported 2 casualties at Newtonia and 22 at Old Fort Wayne, and in December, 1863, about 75 effectives were present. Later the company was assigned to the 6th Artillery Battalion and ended the war at Doaksville in June, 1865. Its commander was Captain Sylvanus Howell".18,19
Census1870*Charles appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Beat 1, Paris PO, Lamar Co., Texas, enumerated 1 June 1870, as 38 yo carpenter C W Blair. Two males living with Charles, identified by initials only: PG & JC, ages 12 and 9 yo respectively. The online image is unreadable. PG may be Portie, though enumerated as a male. No clue re JC.20
Marriage*His second marriage was to Fredora Eubanks "Dora" de Graffenreid on 16 November 1871 at Grayson Co., Texas.1,21
Census1880*Charles and Fredora appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 47 yo carpenter Charles & 31 yo wife Fredora Blair. Their children Minnie Keen and Fannie were listed as living with them.22
Marriage*His third marriage was to Lyla Watson Johnson between 1880 and 1897.1,23
Marriage*His fourth marriage was to Mariah S. Watson on 16 September 1897 at Danville, Virginia. Mariah was widow and Charles was widower 3x. I'd be sceptical of this source but for fact it shows Charles' parents as Jno F & Christian Blair.24,25
Census1900*Charles and Mariah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dan River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 68 yo farmer C W & 51 yo wife Mariah S Blair. Two of Mariah's kids from prior marriage(s) were listed as living with them: namely, 29 yo Carrie McCrary and 23 yo Olive U Johnson.26
Death*Charles died in 1903.1,23

William Blair1

M, #796, b. 1750, d. 19 October 1789
Last Edited31 Oct 2022
Birth*William was born in 1750 in Moneymore, Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland. Groome says ca. 1745. Ancestry's Sandra Fulp tree claims he was s/o Capt. William Samuel Blair & Jane Barnes but none of the four cited sources support either name.2,3,4
Immigration*William immigrated to possibly Pennsylvania Colony, New England, circa 1765.5,6
Marriage*He married Sarah Sutter, daughter of George Sutter, in 1772 in York Co., Pennsylvania Colony, New England. The US & Int'l Marriages record is almost certainly wrong with a marriage date of 1760. The PA & NJ Church & Town Records entries are probably for a different, and presently unknown, William & Sarah Blair. They show three chidlren, Sarah, William, and John Wesley, born 1792-1796, all baptised on 23 Feb 1797. William the father having died in 1789 makes it impossible. It's possible, of course, that the birth years are transcription errors, but all three?
William's FSTrees entry (ID no. LL7Q-BNQ) claims another son named William in between Capt. James & Mary, alleged lifespan of 1777-1830. I've found no evidence in support.
Dallas shows a son Ralph, b. 1791, which again makes no sense if his alleged father Wiolliam died in 1789. I find no primary evidence for this son.7,8,9,10
Occupation*William was a linen merchant in 1776 at Pennsylvania Colony, New England.11
Residence*William resided in York Co., Pennsylvania Colony, New England, between 1776 and 1781.12
Milit-Service*William Blair served as a Private with Captain Samuel Hay's Company, Col. William Irvine's Sixth Pennsylvania Battalion during the Revolutionary War enlisting 28 February 1776. Blair enlisted from York Co., Pennsylvania Colony. On 8 Jun 1776 he was captured by the British under Generals Carelton and Burgoyne, later paroled on 9 August 1776. Hay's Company consisted of 4 Sergeants, 4 Corporals, 1 Drummer, 1 Fifer, 75 Privates present, 2 not present — 87 non-commissioned Officers and Privates. Hodges' DAR app says 26 February for enlistment.2,4,3,13
Move*William and Sarah moved their residence from York County to Virginia before 1780. Rusty Blair says William "left Pennsylvania for southern Virginia shortly after the War to broker cotton".5
OccupationWilliam was a consignment agent for Piedmont tobacco circa 1780 at Virginia.14
Death*William died on 19 October 1789 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Blair Line claims 1790; either the 19 Oct 1789 death date or the 1791 birthdate of alleged son Ralph is incorrect. Hodges says 19 January.
PA Veterans Burial Cards has a William Blair buried in Carslile, PA, no death date shown. He's in the correct military unit but nothing else works.9,12,1,15

FatherWilliam Blair3,4 b. 1750, d. 19 Oct 1789
MotherSarah Sutter5,6 b. 1760, d. 1807
Last Edited17 Jan 2025
Birth*James, son of William Blair and Sarah Sutter, was born on 27 March 1775 in York Co., Virginia Colony, New England. Bible provides complete date and on pg. 9 say Virginia. Hodges claims Pittsylvania, VA. The Gayle Mcdowell tree at Ancestry claims York County, Pennsylvania.7,2
Marr-BondCapt. James Blair and Mary "Polly" Dickinson posted a marriage bond on 1 April 1796 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.8,9
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary "Polly" Dickinson, daughter of Francis Dickinson, on 7 April 1796 at Dryfork, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Scatterlings & Compiled Marriages date is probably the bond date of 01 April, not the marriage. FSTrees's Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940 claims year was 1795.10,11
PwrAttyHe was made attorney-in-fact for Sarah Sutter by a limited power of attorney in 1807 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, in order to sell some of her property.12
Census1820*James appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 001201-1011 as 45+ yo James Blair. Wife Polly is likely the female 26-44yo, daughter Nancy the female 16-25. She's the widow of Reynolds. Her daughter Margaret is likely the female <10 yo. Drury and John Francis the two males 16-25. John Francis is doubled-up in the 16-18 bracket.13
Census1830*James appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 02100001-00000101 as 50-59 yo James Blair. Marriage*His second marriage was to Ann S. Coleman on 23 October 1832. Scatterlings claims, in addition to James Young, an unnamed child of this couple born 1826-1830; we have left this person out of the database due to known marriage date of 1832. This may be m2 for Ann. Bible refers to her as Ann S. Price at one point. FSTrees's Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940 says 25 October.3,15,5
Death*James died on 28 May 1840 in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, at age 65. Joyce claims 25 May, Hodges claims 16 November. Find A Grave says 29 May in Whitmell.16,1,2

ResearchNote*Research Note of 3 November 2021 re sources. There's a dearth of primary evidence for this family and the secondary sources are all over the place. The birth years of William and Nancy's children are uncertain. Even the birth order of the children is iffy. Ancestry and FSTrees provide opinions. Proceed cautiously with this family in this generation.

Birth*William, son of William Blair and Sarah Sutter, was born in February 1781 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Find A Grave's date is 15 Feb. Williams & Dallas say 25 Feb. I'm unable to manipulate the headstone image at Find A Grave to the point of legibility. He's called Elder William Blair by Dallas.7,6
Marr-Bond*Rev. William Blair Jr. and Nancy Thomas posted a marriage bond on 18 May 1801 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.8,9,10
Census1830*William appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 0113001-0010101 as 40-49 yo William Blair. This enumeration is the only William Blair I can find in Pittyslvania County but I'm uncertain it's the same man. The number and ages of the others in the listing, except for Nancy, are problematic.11
Death*William died on 3 October 1839 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, at age 58.7,3
Burial*He was buried at Blair-Stamps Cemetery in Ringgold, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.7

FatherWilliam Blair2,3,4 b. 1750, d. 19 Oct 1789

Last Edited27 Jan 2025
Birth*Samuel, son of William Blair and Sarah Sutter, was born on 11 April 1789 in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Williams says 14 Nov 1789 which may have been a baptism date; Blair Line provides year only.1,2,3
Marr-BondSamuel Brittain Blair Sr. and Mary S. "Polly" Reynolds posted a marriage bond on 16 July 1810 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.6
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary S. "Polly" Reynolds on 26 July 1810 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Mary's Find A Grave entry shows one more child, Mary Sutter Blair (1824- ), for whom we have no other evidence.7,8,9
Milit-ServiceSamuel Brittain Blair Sr. served with the U.S. Cavalry, Captain Edward Carter's Company, Col. R. Halcombe's Regiment during the War of 1812 in September 1814. They marched from Chalk Level on 25 August 1814 to Richmond and were stationed at Mitchell's Spring. He was honorably discharged 12 September 1814.10,1,11
Census1820*Samuel Brittain appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 100010-30010 as 26-44 yo Samuel Blair. The others listed are probably 26-44 yo wife Polly, under 10 yo children Peggy, Joseph, Amanda, and Betsy Blair.
A perfect match.12
Census1830*Samuel Brittain appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 1200001-201101 as 40-49 yo Samuel Blair. James is one bracket too young.13
Marriage*His second marriage was to Clarissa W. "Clary" Fuller on 22 February 1834 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Clarissa's War of 1812 pension app says 22 Feb as does Find A Grave. Virginia Select Marriages says marriage date of 17 Feb. Others claim 18 Feb. Probably the 17-18 Feb is the bond date.10,14,1
Census1840Samuel Brittain appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Regiment 107, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 20111001-111001 as 50-59 yo Samuel Blair. Clarissa W. "Clary" Fuller1

F, #810, b. November 1802, d. 9 April 1890
Last Edited27 Jan 2025
Birth*Clarissa was born in November 1802 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, dau of Britton Fuller.2,3
Marriage*She married Samuel Brittain Blair Sr., son of William Blair and Sarah Sutter, on 22 February 1834 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Clarissa's War of 1812 pension app says 22 Feb as does Find A Grave. Virginia Select Marriages says marriage date of 17 Feb. Others claim 18 Feb. Probably the 17-18 Feb is the bond date.4,5,6
Census1840Clarissa is probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, Samuel Brittain Blair Sr., in the 1840 Federal Census of Regiment 107, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.7
Census1850Clarissa and Samuel appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Northern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 21 October 1850, as 61 yo farmer Samuel & 51 yo Clarisa Blair. Their children James H., John Francis Marion, Amanda Virginia, Nancy Sophronia, Julia Frances, Samuel Brittain, George W. R., Luther Rice, Suter F. and Arthur Sydney were listed as living with them. Reynolds and Arnn (Aron) families enumerated on the same page.8
Census1860*Clarissa and Samuel appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Swansonville PO, Northern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 8 July 1860, as 71 yo Samuel & 57 yo Claracy W Blair. Their children Amanda Virginia, Julia Frances, George W. R., Luther Rice, Suter F. and Arthur Sydney were listed as living with them.9
Estate-WillClarissa was named an heir in the will of Samuel Brittain Blair Sr., her husband, dated 19 December 1868 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, receiving the entire estate, real and personal, for the duration of her life or widowhood.10,11
Census1870*Clarissa W. "Clary" Fuller and her son Arthur Sydney Blair appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as 61 yo Clara W Blair and 23 yo Arthur S Blair in the household of 24 yo George Fuller. Clarissa's maiden name was Fuller so I'm guessing George may be a nephew.12
Census1880*Clarissa appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Callands Magisterial Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as as 72 yo aunt Clary W Blair in the household of S B & Catherine Dunn, relationship unknown.13
