Daniel Vincent Jr.1
M, #549, b. 27 September 1806, d. 6 June 1885
Birth* | Daniel, son of Daniel Vincent and Hannah Smith, was born on 27 September 1806 in Dukes Co., Massachusetts. The 1850, '60 & '70 censuses all support ca. 1806 Massachusetts. His headstone says he was the s/o Daniel & Hannah Vincent. Daniel refers to his mother "Hannah Vincent, deceased" in his will.5,6,7,8,2,3 |
Baptism | Daniel was baptized on 26 October 1806 in Dukes Co., Massachusetts.1 |
Move | Betsey, Archelaus, Jeremiah, Bartlett, Louisa and Daniel joined the move of their mother and step-father from Martha's Vineyard to Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio in 1815.9,10 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Hester Ann Ellis, daughter of Thomas Ellis and Catherine Lnu, after 7 June 1827. This marriage took place in the interval between Hester's father's will (7 Jun 1827 - he refers to her as Hester Ann Ellis) and 1850 (marriage implied though not stated explicitly).11,12,13 |
LandDeal* | He purchased 20 acres in Delhi Township from Nathan Stewart on 17 November 1827.14,10 |
Census1830 | Daniel appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 00001-000100001 as 20-29 yo Daniel Vencent [Vincent]. Wife Hester is probably the female 15-19 yo, mother Hannah the female 60-69 yo.15 |
Guardianship | Daniel Vincent Jr. was named in the guardianship record of Samuel Becker as providing security, along with Elizabeth Davis, a person unknown; appointed.16 |
Census1840* | Daniel appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 00000101-1100100001 as 30-39 yo Daniel Vincent. Wife Hester is likely the female 20-29, daughter Perwilla the female 5-9 and daughter Clarissa the female under 5. The male 50-59 and female 70-79 are unidentified. The elder female could be Daniel's mother, Hannah Smith Vincent, but I've got her with his brother Thomas. Perhaps she bounced back and forth between the two homes and is enumerated twice.17 |
Census1850* | Daniel and Hester appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Green, Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 43 yo hatter Daniel & 25(?) yo Hester A Vincent. Their children Perwilla Gray, Clarissa Pike, Tyler Harrison, Winfield Scott and Martha Jane "Mattie" were listed as living with them.8 |
Estate-Will | In an unknown person 's will of 11 March 1851, Daniel Vincent Jr. was named executor; naming Philip Slone, relationship unknown, and her son-in-law Daniel Vincent as executors. Named heirs were her children James V. W., Joseph C., Hester Ann and Elizabeth, as well as two persons currently unknown, Amy Hyatt and Margaret Hyatt. They received half of the bequest of sisters Hester and Elizabeth so may be daughters-in-law, nieces, etc. Other named heirs were grandsons David and Thomas Ellis. I made a transcription of this will in 1998 and will provide if requested by email.11,18,19 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Margaret K. Murphy circa 1855. Date assumed because Margaret is Daniel's wife in the 1860 Census, but Hester Ann is still his wife in the 1850; Pioneers mistakenly claims that Archelaus, Tyler H., Winfield S., Perwilla, Clarissa, and Mary Jane were Margaret's children.4,20,21,22,9 |
Census1860 | Daniel and Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 14 July 1860, as 54 yo farmer Danl & 54 yo Margt Vincent. Their children Tyler Harrison, Winfield Scott and Martha Jane "Mattie" were listed as living with them. A puzzling enumeration - who is 15 yo Yost Vincent listed between Tyler & Scott? Perhaps a nephew. He's certainly not listed in the 1850. Daniel is quite wealthy with real estate valued at $16,000 and personal estate at $1,000.7 |
Census1870 | Daniel and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 18 June 1870, as 64 yo farmer Daniel & 64 yo Margaret Vincent. Their daughter Martha Jane "Mattie" was listed as living with them, as well as their granddaughter 2 yo Elizabeth Vincent, daughter of their son Winfield Scott and his first wife Anna T. Allen.6 |
Estate-Will* | Daniel Vincent Jr. left a will dated 27 April 1878 at Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, appointing his wife Margaret and son Winfield Scott Vincent his executors and also naming them as heirs. Other named heirs were daughters Perwilla, Clarissa and Martha; grandchildren Scott Dubois, Addie Dubois and Hester Elizabeth Vincent. See also Codicil to Will, dated 5 Jun 1872.23,4 |
Census1880* | Daniel and Margaret appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 73 yo farmer Daniel & 74 yo wife Margaret Vincent. Their children Winfield Scott and Martha Jane "Mattie" were listed as living with them, along with Caroline Becker, Winfield's future wife.5 |
Death* | Daniel died on 6 June 1885 in Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 78. Year only in Pioneers.2,3,9 |
Burial* | He was buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Delhi Hills, Hamilton Co., Ohio. Headstone reads, "son of Daniel and Hannah Vincent born on Martha's Vineyard".24,3 |
Estate-Probate* | Daniel's will was probated at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, on 1 July 1885. His wife Margaret and son Winfield were co-executors.4,25,26 |

William Norton1
M, #550, b. circa 1535, d. after 1604
Birth* | William was born circa 1535 in England. Banks calls him "William Norton of White Lackington".2 |
Residence* | William resided in Broadway, Worcestershire, England, in 1604.2 |
Death* | William died after 1604.2 |
BioNote* | Biography Note: Quoting Banks: "The first known ancestor of Nicholas Norton was William Norton, tanner, of White Lackington about 1540 described as the eldest of the family, but his parentage is unknown. He had two younger brothers, John, also a tanner who made his will in 1576, and Robert Norton, who took up his residence in the cathedral city of Wells where he followed the occupation of innholder and was at the date of his death (1590) without issue. He left considerable property to his nephews.2 |

Nicholas Norton1
M, #551, b. 1562, d. 1616
Birth* | Nicholas, son of William Norton, was born in 1562 in White Lackington, Piddletrenthide, Dorset, England.1 |
Marr-#Child* | Nicholas Norton had eight children.2 |
Death* | Nicholas died in 1616 in White Lackington, Piddletrenthide, Dorset, England.1 |
BioNote* | Biography Note: Per Banks: "That he (Nicholas Norton (551)) was a man above the average is shown by the fact of his occupying the position of church warden of the parish (1599) but as the parish register does not exist prior to 1678 it is not possible at present to determine the names of but half of his eight children. The attested copies of parish registers then required by church law preserved the names of three of them and the chancery suit furnishes the name of his eldest son. Unfortunately, the Bishops Transcripts of Broadway Parish in the Diosceasan Registry at Wells for the years 1609-11 inclusive, the particular years in which we should undoubtedly find the baptism of our Nicholas whose birth fell, as we know, within those years are missing from the files. The occurrence of the names Joseph and Nicholas in the Broadway family which were also distinctive in the Vineyard family together with other collateral circumstances makes it practically certain that we have here the parentage and home of the first of this family to settle on Martha's Vineyard. All other clues have been carefully followed out and give no such marked combination of the probabilities as does this, and the author is satisfied that it is the right solution."3 |
