Samuel B. Downey
M, #213, b. October 1854, d. before 19 April 1910
Birth* | Samuel was born in October 1854 in Switzerland Co., Indiana. 1850 census supports ca. year and state only but suggest birth ca. 1840. MyIndianaHome.Net claims 31 May 1841, middle initial "F", d. 19 July 1855. The 1900 census claims October 1854! Either we've got the wrong Sam & Viola in 1900 or his age is just plain wrong. The 1840 and 1850 censuses clearly point to between Jan and June of 1840.1,2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Viola B. Stagner on 15 January 1882 in Switzerland Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Bertha M (Apr 1883- ), Charles M (Cec 1884- ), Oscar (Aug 1887- ), and Bessie M Downey (Jul 1889- ). The 1900 census confirms married 18 years.4,1 |
Census1900* | Samuel and Viola appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Summan, Ripley Co., Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 45 yo teamster Samuel & 41 yo wife Viola E Downey. Their 17 yo daughter Bertha M, 15 yo son Charles M, 12 yo son Oscar and 10 yo daughter Bessie M Downey were listed as living with them.1 |
Death* | Samuel died before 19 April 1910, based on fact his wife is listed as widow on the 1910 census.5 |

Marr-Divorce* | Charles was divorced from Aggie Todd before 26 February 1892. The Topeka Daily Capital article of 26 Feb 1892 says Charles had a quarrel with his wife 'several months since and a divorce suit followed. Mrs. Downey was granted a separation'. Following the separation Downey was alleged to have sent her an obscene post card. He was held in the Shawnee County jail on $300 bond and was not expected to be able to 'secure that amount'. The Daily Topics article of same date says they were already divorced.11 |

BioNote* | Biography Note of 23 March 2021: The first paragraph following is information provided by Charles' daughter Zella Marie, principally in the 1980s. The second relates to contradictions in his birthyear. Charles was tall with red hair and moustache. There is a picture of him in Zella's photo album. Also one at Whidbey. Charles and his family lived and farmed on California Creek, near Nowata. They had chickens, turkeys, cattle, hogs and horses. Zella didn't mention any crops. The family was hit hard by a flood in 1908 or 1909. Heavy rains started during the day. That night the river came up and flooded the farm. They lost most of the horses and all of the cows. Charles carried one colt into the house and upstairs to save it. The family was evacuated on horses and in rowboats. They had to sell the remaining horses (except the colt) for money to buy food. Charles developed rheumatism after the flood. Eventually it confined him to a wheelchair. Later, during WWI, the military came to the house and tried to make Charles get out of his wheelchair. They didn't believe he was crippled and wanted him in the Army. Zella says they treated him badly. After Charles died Bert and Zella moved to Childers, near Nowata. Regarding Charles' birthdate, the 1850 Federal Census suggests ca. 1853. The Downey Bible shows 29 Feb 1859. Family tradition said that Chas was born in a leap year, but 1859 was not a leap year. 1860 was a leap year so either the day or year is wrong in the Bible or the story that he was born on Leap Year's Day is incorrect. Charles gave his age as 31 in March, 1888 on the marriage license with Aggie Todd but in December. In 1894 he gave his age as 34 on the marriage license with Anna Bell Pence, His death certificate says 29 Feb 1856, the informant being his son Bert. Aunt June said that Chas was born in 1855. Tradition also said he was born in Springfield. Marie (Downey) Eicher writes, He seemed to age slowly!! I've read census records & scoured court houses etc. & have never found a trace of that. He evidently went to Springfield or Ill., anyway, much later.19 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 27 November 2023 re errors in Ancestry trees. The entry for Charles W Downey in the Webb-Bobbitt-Harrell-Seymour tree at Ancestry has a couple of serious errors. Among them, * Charles had no middle initial, certainly not W. * His parents were not Amos S Downey & Mary Glena Pavey. They did have a son Charles Wesley Downey, b. 1860. * His m2 wife Anna Bell's maiden name was Pence, not Downey. Her middle name was spelled Bell, not Belle. I knew two of Charles & Anna Bell's five children - my grandmother Zella well and my great aunt Jessie June Downey fairly well. I have many original source documents on this family. Do not be misled by this error-filled tree. |

William Andrew Johnson Pence1,2,3
M, #224, b. 24 October 1865, d. 6 March 1948

William Andrew Johnson "Will" Pence 224

Birth* | William, son of Noah Pence and Martha Elizabeth Garmon, was born on 24 October 1865 in Virginia. The 1870 Federal Census confirms ca. 1865 but gives birthplace as Canada; his age ±1 year and state per the 1920 Census; the 1900 census says Oct 1869 in "Canada Eng".1,5,6,7,4 |
Census1870 | William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Uniontown, Belmont Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Noah Pence and Martha Elizabeth Garmon, as 5 yo William Pence.8 |
Census1880 | William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cedarville Twp., Warren Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, Noah Pence and Martha Elizabeth Garmon, as 14 yo Andrew Johnson Pence.9 |
Census1900 | William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in the household of his mother, Martha Elizabeth Garmon, as 30 yo son & farmer William Pence.10 |
Occupation* | William was a U. S. Marshall circa 1903 at Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). He also raised horses.11 |
Census1910 | William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Madison, Madison Co., Nebraska, as 39 yo hardware clerk lodger William Pence in the household of Oscar M. and Jessie Pennington. The good news about this enumeration is that his birth state is correct, as are both parents' birthstates. His age is off by 6 years. Nebraska is on the way from Oklahoma to Wyoming, and this is only possibility after an extensive census survey.12 |
Census1920* | William appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Voting Precinct 24, Crook Co., Wyoming, enumerated 15 January 1920, as 54 yo farmer William A Pence. His sister Anna Bell and her daughter Jessie J Downey, as niece, were living with him.13 |
Census1930 | William appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Prairie Twp., Washington Co., Arkansas, enumerated 21 April 1930, as 65 yo farmer William A Pence. His marital status was originally marked 'Wd' but that was scratched out. His birthstate and those of his parents are all correct with Virginia. It's odd that he would have left Wyoming for Arkansas, then gone back to Wyoming in 1935, then on to Oklahoma in 1940. I consider this 1930 enumeration a bit iffy.14 |
Residence* | William resided in Sundance, Crook Co., Wyoming, on 1 April 1935.15 |
Residence | William resided in Wagoner, Wagoner Co., Oklahoma, on 27 January 1936.16 |
Census1940 | William appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Wagoner, Wagoner Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 6 April 1940, as 74 yo William A Pence.15 |
Religion* | William Andrew Johnson was Roman Catholic. Pence Family writes he "had last sacraments of church".1 |
Death* | William died on 6 March 1948 in Tulsa, Tulsa Co., Oklahoma, at age 82. Will died in a nursing home located at 536 N. Elwood.1,11 |
Burial* | He was buried at Tahlequah Cemetery in Tahlequah, Cherokee Co., Oklahoma.17,1 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 15 September 2009 re Will's parents. We've taken a bit of a leap here with his name, but his father's 1880 Census has an entry where Will is listed as Andrew Johnson; the age and birthstate are correct; we knew previously that Will's middle initial was "A"; he is William A. in Pence Family Records.7 |

Lillia Mae Pence1,2
F, #227, b. 1 June 1871, d. 28 July 1905
Birth* | Lillia, daughter of Noah Pence and Martha Elizabeth Garmon, was born on 1 June 1871 in Richland, Belmont Co., Ohio. Her name usually Lilly except in the Pence Bible records where it's Lila and her marriage to Fredman, where it's Lilla. Her birthyear should be ca. 1874 according to the 1880 census.3,1,2 |
Census1880 | Lillia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cedarville Twp., Warren Co., Virginia in the household of her parents, Noah Pence and Martha Elizabeth Garmon, as 6 yo Lillie May Pence.4 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 5 October 1891 re Lilla's marriage. There are three marriage records in the MO Marriage, Naturalization, etc. database for a marriage between Thomas Jacks & Lillie Pence on this date. I believe these records are not for our Lillie Pence. One, we are certain she married Daniel Fredman six months later. Two, the record cited says Thomas & Lillie were married at her parents' home in Clay Co., Missouri. Lillie's father had died in 1884 and her mother, Martha, doesn't remarry until sometime after the 1900 census when she's in Nowata, so 'parents' seems very unlikely.5 |
Marriage* | She married Daniel A. Fredman on 19 April 1892 in Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas. Daniel was of Caney, KS and Lila of Bartlesville at the time of their marriage. The Jan 1893 newspaper article says she was of Nowata. The 1885 marriage records of Montgomery County show many couples from Indian Territory going to Independence to be married.6,7,8,1,2 |
Death* | Lillia died on 28 July 1905 at age 34.1,2 |
Burial* | She was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2 |

Elizabeth Louisa Baierl1,2,3
F, #231, b. 1902, d. 1927
Birth* | Elizabeth was born in 1902, d/o Christof Baierl & Rosina Ottenburg.4 |
Education* | She was a student of nursing at Boulder Sanitarium and Hospital (now Boulder Memorial Hospital) at Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, between 1925 and 1927.1 |
Marriage* | She married Bert Dewey Downey, son of Charles Downey and Anna Bell Pence, on 4 January 1927 at Eastland residence in Denver, Denver Co., Colorado. Marie Downey Eicher, Bert's daughter by his m3 Dollie Lattimore writes, Bert and Louisa met in Boulder, Co. He was taking courses at the U. of Colorado and working in the Maint. Dept. and Boiler Room at the Boulder Sanitorium and Hospital. Louisa was a student nurse. When she graduated they married and move to Kansas.5,6,2 |
Burial* | She was buried at Hayden Cemetery in Hayden, Routt Co., Colorado. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave. No other Downeys in this cemetery.4 |
Death* | Elizabeth died in 1927 in Spivey, Kingman Co., Kansas. Eicher writes in 2021, "Ruth was born there November 5, 1927 and Louisa died a couple weeks later (probably post partum infection).".1,4,7 |
BioNote* | Biography Note of 24 March 2021: Marie Downey Eicher writes on 23 Mar 2021, Regarding Louisa's Find A Grave. Yes, this is Louisa's Find A Grave with an error. The name is Louisa, not Louise. Louisa took nursing at the Boulder Sanitarium and Hospital. Daddy was employed there. They married when Louisa graduated from nursing, and they moved to Spivey Kansas. Ruth was born there November 5, 1927 and Louisa died a couple weeks later (probably post partum infection). Daddy took Louisa's body and baby Ruth on the train to Hayden Colorado where Louisa's parents lived. Louisa was buried in the Hayden cemetery (I have visited her grave) and Ruth's grandmother kept baby Ruth, since Daddy had no way to care for her alone. This is a whole story in itself, but Daddy and Ruth always maintained close contact by mail. Daddy was planning for Ruth's higher education when she up and got married with her grandmother's permission--Daddy was not consulted. I will never forget the day daddy got the news that 16 year old Ruth was married. He was very unhappy for sure. Daddy and Ruth continued contact through correspondence and visits. We always prayed for "little Ruth" in family worship every night as I grew up.1 |

Maj. Harry Clifton Blackburn1
M, #240, b. 18 September 1920, d. 19 December 1982
Birth* | Harry was born on 18 September 1920 in Everett, Snohomish Co., Washington.1,2,3 |
Milit-Misc | Harry served with the Washington National Guard prior to his induction into the US Army in August 1937. The letter from Major General Thompson references 'a recent ruling of the Judge Advocate General of the Army [stating that] a discharge from the Army of the United States also discharges, from the National Guard of the United States, National Guardsmen who were inducted into Federal service at the time of mobilization.4 |
Milit-Service* | Maj. Harry Clifton Blackburn served as Corporal, squad leader, heavy weapons with Co. M, 161st Infantry, U.S. Army, enlisting August 1937. He continued with the same outfit as Platoon Sergeant, heavy weapons, from September '40 to August '42.1 |
Milit-Misc* | Harry served with the 376th Infantry Regiment stateside from 11 Aug 1942 to 05 Aug 1944. He was stationed in Michigan, Kansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Nebraska, returned to Mississippi, and finally New York. Harry received his 2nd Lieutenant commission on the earlier date. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 23 April 1944.1,5 |
Milit-Misc | Harry served with the 376th in Europe from 06 Aug 1944 to 17 Sep 1945. His niece Marie Eicher writes, "Aunt June told me that Harry was in the Normandy invasion - that he 'walked up in water to his armpits to get ashore' in the fighting". This record indicates he didn't arrive in Normandy until a couple months after D-Day. I spoke with an Army recruiter in Seattle in 2012 about this discrepancy. He said that records from those days are not entirely reliable - that they had a war to win and record keeping was not the first priority, so not to discount June's rendition of Harry's story entirely. He returned to the States on 18 Sep 1945 and retired from active duty at Ft. Lewis on 12 November.1 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Jessie June Downey, daughter of Charles Downey and Anna Bell Pence, on 24 March 1950 at Everett, Snohomish Co., Washington. The license was dated 22 March. Harry's residence was Everett, June's was Marysville.6 |
Marr-Divorce* | Harry was divorced from Jessie June Downey at Snohomish Co., Washington, on 23 March 1951.
