Census1840*Jacob appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Franklin, Knox (now Morrow), Ohio, with a household listed as 201001-20001 as 30-39 yo Jacob Painter. The other female <5 yo and two males <5 yo are the three who died of scarlet fever in 1841 - Emily, Nathan and Edwin. The male in the 10-14 yo slot is unknown.6
Census1850Jacob and Ann appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Franklin, Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 25 August 1850, as 49 yo farmer Jacob & 33 yo Ann Painter. Their children Angeline, Sarah Caroline, Melissa, John G. and George Washington were listed as living with them.7

Census1840Nathan may be the male age 15-19 listed in the household of Abraham Coe, in the 1840 Federal Census of Gilead Twp., Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio.6
Marriage*His first marriage was to Orpha Buffington circa 1846.1,3
Census1850*Nathan and Orpha appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Gilead Twp., Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 27 August 1850, as 24 yo farmer Nathan & 24 yo Orpha Nickols. Their children John B. S. and Melville W. were listed as living with them, along with unknown 55 yo Matilda Bazell.7
Marriage*His second marriage was to Sarah Ann Huffmire circa 1854.1,8,3
Census1860*Nathan and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bennington, Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 6 June 1860, as 38 yo farmer Nathan & 28 yo Sarah Ann Nichols. Their children John B. S., Melville W. and Rosa Belle Marie were listed as living with them. Also living with the family was 20 yo Phoebe Huffman, possible sister of Sarah.9

Now here's what's weird - in the 1870 there another Nathan Nicholes in Belmont, Ohio, born Virginia ca. 1823, wife Sarah E., and six children (Wm, John, Clayton, Mary, Flora, and Clifford). Was our Nathan a bigamist with two families? His next wife after Mary Dean was also named Sarah E.12

Birth*Mary was born circa 1832 in Ohio.3,1
Marriage*She married Nathan Nickols III, son of Nathan Nickols Jr. and Sarah Thomas, on 22 October 1868 in Knox Co., Ohio. License issued 12 Oct 1868.4,1,2
Death*Mary died after 1870.1
Census1870*Mary and Nathan appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Centerburg PO, Hilliar Twp., Knox Co., Ohio, enumerated 10 August 1870, as 44 yo farmer Nathan & 38 yo Mary Nichols. Their children Rosa Belle Marie and William E. were listed as living with them, as well as 15 yo Rebecca Dean, possible sister or daughter of Mary from prior marriage. His next wife after Mary Dean was also named Sarah E.5

BioNote*Biography Note of circa 1910: We have a photograph of the four children in Turlock, California, taken sometime in the early 1900s. John, Charles and Margaret are all mentioned in Cora's obituary of March 1937. It was this photo and knowing that John and Charley had lived in Turlock that lead to the discovery of John's gravestone and finding the name of their mother, Clarissa on John's funeral record. Up until this time all we knew of Cora's parents was that she was the daughter of "Dwight Bartlett of Cincinnati". Once able to identify which of the several Dwight Bartletts living in Ohio in the 1800s was our ancestor (the one who married Clarissa Pike Vincent) it proved simple to trace our ancestry in this line back five additional generations.

BioNote*Biography Note of 6 March 1937: Cora's obituary in the Mulvane News:
OBITUARY, MRS. N. H. BARTLETT. Cora Ann Bartlett was born on August 1, 1857 four miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio and departed this life at the home of her son, Rev. Ernest D. Bartlett at Iuka, Kansas on Saturday morning, March 6, 1937, at the age of 79 years, seven months and five days. She grew to womanhood in the family home near Cincinnati, finishing the Common school and for some years teaching in the same school in which she had been a scholar. After a few years she entered the Lebanon Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio, and here she became acquainted with Nathan Herbert Bartlett of Mt. Gilead, Ohio. They were united in marriage on Wednesday, August 6, 1884 at Cincinnati by Rev. John J. Reed of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church. To this union were born three children; two sons and one daughter, all of whom survive her. Her husband preceded her in death on November 11, 1927 at Wesley Hospital, Wichita, Kansas, since which time she has made her home with her children, and for a time with her brothers in California. Early in life Mrs. Bartlett gave her heart to Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in her home community. She was deeply impressed as a young woman by a message on the text, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23. Throughout her life she kept this passage in mind as one of her favorite passages and in her declining years she often spoke of it, and of the influence it had upon her life. In the year 1901 she and her husband came with their children to Kansas moving to Winfield and later to Mulvane, Kansas in 1920. Here they lived until her husband's death. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Iuka, and faithful to the services as she had opportunity to attend. She was a loving mother, sacrificing for her home and her children, a loyal friend and neighbor, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her passing her three children: Mrs. H.G.Woods of Lomita, California; Oscar H. Bartlett, of Collinsville, Oklahoma; Rev. Ernest D. Bartlett, of Iuka, and one sister and two brothers: Mrs. Margaret E. Allen, of Huntington Park, California; John L. Bartlett and Chas. F. Bartlett of Delhi, California, seven grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held in Calbeck-Sappington Mortuary, Pratt, Rev. P.D.Womeldorf, Dist. Supt, of Dodge City District and the Rev. W.H.Dellinger, pastor at Pratt conducted the service. Immediately after the service Mrs. Bartlett was brought to Mulvane and a short service W.M.Austin. Two musical numbers were rendered by Mrs. Ernest Thompson, Mrs. E.P.Mauk, Mrs. Alley and Mrs. McBee. Lowell Mason, E.W.Throckmorton, Ed Kimble, George Drake, George Whitted and B.C.Minnich acted as pall bearers, and she was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Mulvane cemetery."
Cora took care of Clara Ann for a while after Ervie Joe's death.2

Birth*John, son of Dwight David Bartlett and Clarissa Pike Vincent, was born between November 1865 and 1867 in Ohio. John's funeral record (informant was his brother Charles) & headstone both say birthyear was 1867; the 1900 census shows date Nov 1865. Both the funeral record and the headstone are likely informed by Charles. I'm inclined to think he had forgotten John's birthday. John's CA Death Index entry says 01 Jan 1867 - another instance of info likely from Charles. The census record more closely supports an 1865 year.
Althoff mistakenly gives brother Charles's birthdate as John's.2,7,8,9,10,11
Census1870John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Dwight David Bartlett and Clarissa Pike Vincent, as 3 yo John Bartlet.12
Census1880John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Dwight David Bartlett and Clarissa Pike Vincent, as 13 yo son John L Bartlett.13
Census1900John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio in the household of his mother, Clarissa Pike Vincent, as 34 yo single son John Vincent.14,5
Residence*John resided in Delhi, Merced Co., California, in 1901. His Funeral Record says he had been a resident of Delhi for 42 years at time of death. Sister Cora's obit places him there in 1937.2,1
Census1910John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Holtville, Imperial Co., California, as 43 yo partner John Logan Bartlett in the household of 29 yo painter Herbert Borrel.15
Census1920*John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Holtville Twp., Imperial Co., California, enumerated 8 January 1920, as 52 yo dairy farmer John L Bartlett. His 48 yo brother Charles F Bartlett was listed as living with him.8
Census1930John appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Twp. 5, Merced Co., California, as 60 yo boarder John L Bartlett in the household of 68 yo Silvio & 65 yo Jennie Comisto.16
Census1940John appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Delhi, Merced Co., California, as as 72 yo John L Bartlett in the household of his brother Charles Francis Bartlett; as 70 yo Charles F Bartlett.17
Death*John died on 9 July 1943 at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock, Stanislaus Co., California. Find A Grave claims 22 July as the death date, rather than the burial date. CA Death Index says 19 July but his funeral record dated 18 July clear says he died on 09 July.2,9,10
Estate-AdminHis administration of estate began on 18 July 1943 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.2
Burial*He was buried on 22 July 1943 at Turlock Memorial Park in Turlock, Stanislaus Co., California.2,18,7
