Owen Thomas1,2,3,4

M, #244, b. 12 May 1754, d. 26 August 1799
FatherDavid Thomas Jr.5,2,3 b. 16 Aug 1726, d. 5 Jul 1796
MotherRuth Rogers5,2 b. 25 Feb 1727, d. 30 Mar 1794
Last Edited23 Jan 2025
Birth*Owen, son of David Thomas Jr. and Ruth Rogers, was born on 12 May 1754 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania Colony, New England. Baughman & Bartlett say only Pennsylvania with date of 12 May 1754. DAR Lineage Books and Bartlett give date cited. This mother-childrelationship implied in Loudoun Wills by the facts that, a) there is no evidence of David Jr. ever having had another wife, and, b) Ruth died just two years before David made his will, making a different mother for his children very unlikely.6,1,3
Residence*Owen resided in Chester Co., Pennsylvania Colony, New England, between 1776 and 1781.7
Marriage*He married Martha Davis in 1781 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. In addition to the children shown in our database, Durkee's DAR app shows a son David.7,1,3,2
Milit-Service*Owen Thomas served as a private with the Chester County militia, Capt. Barber's 7th Company, 2nd Battalion under Lt. Col. Thomas Bull during the Revolutionary War , 'ordered on a tour of duty immediately' 24 September 1781. Stringer argues that our Owen Thomas was not a Revolutionary War soldier and that the records usually cited are for a second man of same name. See Research Note for complete text of her thesis. I believe both Owen Thomases were Rev. War soldiers.8,7,6
Estate-WillOwen was named executor and an heir in the will of David Thomas Jr., his father, dated 23 June 1796 at Loudoun Co., Virginia.2,5
Death*Owen died on 26 August 1799 in Fairfax, Loudoun Co., Virginia, at age 45.7

Ruth "Little Ruth" Thomas1,2

MotherMartha Davis1,2 b. 1752, d. a 1832
Last Edited26 Jan 2025
Birth*Ruth, daughter of Owen Thomas and Martha Davis, was born in 1783 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.3,2,1,4
Marriage*She married Jacob Thomas circa 1808 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.2,4
Census1810Ruth is probably one of the two females age 16 to 25 listed in the household of her mother, Martha Davis, in the 1810 Federal Census of Loudoun Co., Virginia.5
Census1810Ruth is probably the female age 16 to 25 listed in the household of her husband, Jacob Thomas, in the 1810 Federal Census of Waterford, Loudoun Co., Virginia.6,2
Census1820Ruth is probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Jacob Thomas, in the 1820 Federal Census of Front Royal, Frederick Co., Virginia.7,2
Census1830*Ruth "Little Ruth" appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Western Dist., Frederick Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 00101-0000100001 as Ruth Thomas. A seriously flawed enumeration, but it's the only Ruth Thomas in Virginia and other evidence suggests this is in fact her. If Ruth is supposed to be the female in the 20-29 bracket then she's too young by two, if the 70-79 bracket then she's too old by three. Both males are currently unidentified.8
Census1840Ruth "Little Ruth" appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of 2nd Dist. (Cameron Parish), Loudoun Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 000121-00010001 as 50-59 yo Ruth Thomas. Finally Ruth is the correct age. No one else in the enumeration is currently identified. Other likely relatives on same page are Martha Thomas, next door, 000121-0 (odd, no females!), Jefferson Thomas (001101-0001121) and Jane Nichols (0-000000002.)9
Census1850Ruth appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Loudoun Co., Virginia, enumerated 6 September 1850, as 66 yo Ruth Thomas. Her children Jane and Mary were listed as living with her, along with Susan Hesket, 24, alleged to be a niece, the daughter of Ruth's sister Elizabeth 'who married Solomon Heskett and moved to Belmont Co., Ohio". There is another Ruth Thomas in Loudoun County, HOH, who seriously undermines the liklihood that the one we've enumerated for 1830 and especially 1840 is correct. One possible explanation is that Ruth was enumerated twice.10
Death*Ruth died on 22 September 1852 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.2,4
Burial*She was buried at Ketoctin Baptist Church Cemetery in Purcellville, Loudoun Co., Virginia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.11

BioNote*Biography Note of 1909: The following is taken from the booklet "Historical and Genealogical Sketch of the NICKOLS-THOMAS FAMILY in Ohio - With Partial Ancestry, and Collateral Relatives in Virginia". The book was read at the 21st Family Reunion at the home of Louise Hiskett on 26 Aug 1909. The book was written by my great great uncle Robert F. Bartlett, brother of my great grandfather Nathan Herbert Bartlett:(:CR:)(:CR:)"At the twentieth annual reunion of the Nickols-Thomas family you elected me historian, to prepare a genealogical and historical sketch of the family, and pursuant to that election I now report.(:CR:)(:TAB:)We date the family, in Ohio, from our grandmother, Sarah Thomas Nickols, who came to this neighborhood, then Marion county, Ohio, in the year 1827, with her numerous family of eight daughters and four sons, and located immediately south of Mt. Gilead, then called Youngstown, in honor of Jacob Young, who laid out the village. Afterwards the name was changed, because of another more prominent Youngstown in Mahoning county, Ohio, to Mt. Gilead, in honor of a villge in Loudoun county, Virginia, from which county she emigrated to Ohio.(:CR:)(:TAB:)About the year 1825 our grandfather, Nathan Nickols, Jr., contracted to sell his farm , which was located in the Piedmont Valley in Virginia, and which lay partly on the mountain side and partly in the valley on the east side of the Blue Ridge mountains, between Round Hill and Bluemont (then Snickersville) and coming to Ohio on horseback, bought of Lodovic Revolution, the one hundred and sixty acres of land immediately south of Mt. Gilead. He also bought of the government five other quarter acres of land in the vicinity of Mt. Gilead, planning to settle his family, and give each one a small farm.(:CR:)(:TAB:)He returned to Virginia and in March, 1827, while loading fertilizer at Leesburg, Virginia, he ruptured a blood vessel, and died March 21st, 1827. Two of the children, Mahala and Mordecai, had previously died in childhood, and the graves of the three grandfather died on that March day in 1827, it was a more than ordinarily sad time for our heroic old grandmother and family, for the Virginia farm was contracted to be sold, nearly a thousand acres of land were bought in Ohio, and she and the twelve children remained, the oldest of whom, uncle John, was in his twenty-fifth year of age, and the youngest, uncle Nathan was a babe not quite eleven months old. Grandmother was advised to give up the emigration to Ohio, but she said 'she believed Nathan had divine guidance in making the plan and she would do her best to carry out his plans', which she did.(:CR:)(:TAB:)I do not know just the date of starting or arrival here, but she came in the summer of 1827. I am certain that she had no airship or aeroplane, or dirigible balloon to waft her to Ohio in a few hours, or railroad train to bring her in a day and night, as we have come; but I do know that she loaded her goods and twelve children into covered wagons, with provisions for the journey of many days, and took the road thru Snicker's Gap in the Blue Ridge mountains and came thru the Allegheny mountains on the old National Pike part of the way, and thru an almost trackless forest, to this land of promise.(:CR:)(:TAB:)I cannot give you the events of that journey, but you can readily imagine them for yourselves. When she arrived she found many Indians still here, but peaceable. On April 5th, 1832, she wrote a letter to her mother, Martha Davis Thomas, in Virginia, (and I have that letter in my possession) in which, among other things, she wrote this: 'I have met with a good many difficulties since I have been here, but I have made out to get through them all, and am not sorry that I am here, and I wish you were here, for I think you would satisfaction here than you do there, for we all live in peace and harmony.'(:CR:)(:TAB:)I do not know how grandmother managed for a home at first, but she was contented. Soon a brick house was built on the location where John Dawson now resides, for the building of which, grandfather Nathan gave $1000.00 in his last will. She planted an orchard west of and adjoining her house, with trees from the nurseries of Jonathan Chapman, nicknamed 'Johnny Appleseed.'(:CR:)(:TAB:)There grandmother lived in 'peace and harmony' until June 23rd, 1839, when she departed this life. Her grave is near the southwest corner of the old cemetery in Mt. generations the family had been Friends or Quakers, and uncle George was of that denomination at his death in September, 1885.(:CR:)(:TAB:)After her arrival in Ohio, grandmother entered five more quarter- sections of government land in her vicinity, for it was grandfather's plan to give each one of the twelve children one hundred and sixty acres of land, and have them settle near each other, so that in the end the family owned seventeen hundred and sixty acres of land, only a small portion of which is yet owned by descendants of grandfather and grandmother Nickols."11
ResearchNote*Research Note of 1998 re additional information. An article by James Miller in The Morrow County Sentinel of 14 Jan 1998 is excellent and provides more information about the family than R. F. Bartlett.12

Birth*John, son of Nathan Nickols Jr. and Sarah Thomas, was born on 4 October 1802 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.3,1,4,2
Census1810John is probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Nathan Nickols Jr., in the 1810 Federal Census of Loudoun Co., Virginia.5
Census1820John is probably the male age 16 to 25 listed in the household of his father, Nathan Nickols Jr., in the 1820 Federal Census of Loudoun Co., Virginia.6
ArrivalsJohn Nickols arrived at Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio, in 1823 with his father, Nathan Nickols Jr.7
Marriage*He married Tracy Nickols before 1827.1,3,8,9,10
Move*John and Tracy moved their residence from Loudoun County to near Whetstone, Morrow Co., Ohio in 1827. Baughman & Bartlett clearly say that John and Tacy moved to Ohio in 1823 following the purchase of land there by his father. He immigrated with his brother, Albert, and Albert's daughter, Ruth, and her husband, Alben Coe Sr. This book was published in 1895. In Bartlett's 1909 booklet, "Nickols-Thomas", he says that John and Tacy came to Ohio with his mother in 1827. I'm going with the later publication for now.1,11
Church*John was a founding member at Methodist Episcopal Church in Mt. Gilead, Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio, in 1829.12
Census1830John appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Morven Twp., Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 10001-20001 as 20-29 yo John Nichols. The other daughter < 5 yo is unknown.13
Census1840John appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Richland Twp., Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 1110001-0210001 as 40-49 yo John Nickols. Minor discrepancies - Tracy is one slot too old and a couple of the children are off by a year or two compared to the 1850. Quite closer overall.14
Milit-Service*John Nickols served with the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War , enlisting in 1846.15,2
Move*John moved his residence from Morrow County to Dade County, Missouri in 1847.1,15
Census1850John and Tracy appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 47, Lawrence Co., Missouri, enumerated 18 October 1850, as 48 yo farmer John & 49 yo Trasey (indexed Mosa) Nichols. Their children Albert N., Sarah Margaret, Swithen, Nathan, Mary S., Jas. William and Rebecca Jane were listed as living with them, as well as daughter Rebecca's 26 yo husband James W Jacobs and their 0.4 yo son James Frank Jacobs.16
Census1860*John and Tracy appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Ozark Twp., Lawrence Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 June 1860, as 58 yo farmer John & 59 yo Tacy Nichol. Their children Swithen, Nathan and Jas. William were listed as living with them. Living next door is 28 yo son Albert N Nichol and his family.17
Census1870John and Tracy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ozark Twp., Lawrence Co., Missouri, enumerated 6 July 1870, as 67 yo farmer John & 68 yo Tacy Nichols. Their children Jas. William and Swithen were listed as living with them, as well as Swithen's new wife, 19 yo Martha H Nichols.18
Death*John died on 27 July 1875 in Missouri at age 72.3,2
Burial*He was buried at Morrison Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence Co., Missouri. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.3,2

Norval Valentine Hiskett1,2

M, #270, b. 15 February 1805, d. 8 February 1852
Last Edited4 Apr 2023
Birth*Norval was born on 15 February 1805 in Virginia.3,1
Marriage*His first marriage was to Massey Nickols, daughter of Nathan Nickols Jr. and Sarah Thomas, on 12 February 1829 at old homestead near, Mt. Gilead, Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio.1,2
Census1830Norval Valentine appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Knox Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 00001-1001 as 20-29 yo Stosvelt Haskill [Norvil V Haskill].4
Census1840*Norval Valentine appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Gilead Twp., Marion (now Morrow) Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 220001-10101 as 30-39 yo Norwal Hescott. Aperfect match.5
Marriage*His second marriage was to Emily Howell between 1844 and 1850. Date assumes after death of Norval's 1st wife in 1844 and certainly before they're listed together in the 1850 census. I find no record for this marriage in the Ohio marriage databases in FamilySearch.3,6
Census1850*Norval and Emily appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Cardington Twp., Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 30 July 1850, as 45 yo farmer Norvel 39 yo Emily Heskett. Their children George William, Nathan Nickols and Matilda Ann were listed as living with them.6
Death*Norval died on 8 February 1852 in Ohio at age 46. Bartlett's date of 08 Feb 1850 makes no sense. Norval is clearly in the 1850 census of 30 July with new wife and three of his known children.3,1
Burial*He was buried at Old Mount Gilead Presbyterian Cemetery in Mt. Gilead, Morrow Co., Ohio. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Bartlett says River Cliff, but the Presbyterian Cemetery per Find A Grave makes more sense.3,1
