Emanuel Garmong1,2
M, #759, b. circa 1805, d. December 1879
Birth* | Emanuel, son of Christian Garmong and Maria Lnu, was born circa 1805 in Virginia. Birthyear is best guess from many conflicting possibilities: the 1810 census says 1800-1809, the 1820 census says 1805-1810, the 1850 census says 1801, the 1860 census says 1810, the 1870 census says 1809. Woodlawn Burial Records says 1801. Woodlawn Cemetery Index of Burials gives age at death as 74, indicating birth in 1805. Susan Hannum's info from the family Bible gives his birth in 1801. Oakey says that Emanuel was born in Pennsylvania, but all the censuses say Virginia.4,5,2,6,7,3,1 |
Census1810 | Emanuel is probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Christian Garmong, in the 1810 Federal Census of Frederick Co., Virginia.8 |
Census1820 | Emanuel is probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Christian Garmong, in the 1820 Federal Census of Frederick Co., Virginia.9 |
Census1830 | Emanuel is probably the male age 20 to 29 listed in the household of his father, Christian Garmong, in the 1830 Federal Census of Eastern Dist., Frederick Co., Virginia.10 |
Marr-Bond | Emanuel Garmong and Rebecca Shipe posted a marriage bond on 22 April 1833 at Frederick Co., Virginia. Bondsman was Isaac Shipe.11 |
Marriage* | He married Rebecca Shipe, daughter of Fnu Shipe, on 25 April 1833 in Frederick Co., Virginia. Minister officiating was John Allemong of the Methodist Church in Stevens City.12,13,14,15 |
Religion* | Emanuel and Rebecca were Baptists according to family historian, David Gormong. This is potentially in conflict with the fact they were married in the Methodist Church, although switching denominations is not uncommon.1,16 |
Census1840 | Emanuel appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Clarke Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 220001-00001 as 30-39 yo Ernd Garmang. A good match. The others are 20-29 yo wife Rebecca, 5-9 yo sons Jonas and Calvin, and under 5 yo sons Charles & James.17 |
Census1850 | Emanuel and Rebecca appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 12, Clarke Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 July 1850, as 49 yo farmer Emmanuel & 36 yo Rebecca Garmong. Their children Jonas, Charles William, James L., Martha Elizabeth, Emanuel, Anna Rebecca, Mary Sophie and Richard H. were listed as living with them. Joseph (Rebecca's brother) & Deborah Shipe have the same dwelling and family numbers as Emanuel & Rebecca but they're on the next page right after Infant Garmong. Even if they lived in the same dwelling they should have had a new family number. My conclusion is a hand-typo and that they're a separate household.2 |
Move | Emanuel and Rebecca moved their residence from Clark County to Warren County between 1852 and 1860.18,2 |
Census1860* | Emanuel and Rebecca appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Nineveh, Warren Co., Virginia, enumerated 27 August 1860, as 50 yo farmer E & 45 yo Rebecca Garmong. Their children Jonas, Martha Elizabeth, Emanuel, Anna Rebecca, Mary Sophie, Richard H. and Caroline were listed as living with them.5 |
Move* | Emanuel and Rebecca moved their residence from Warren County to Clark Co., Illinois in 1863.1 |
Census1870 | Emanuel and Rebecca appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Livingston PO, Clark Co., Illinois, enumerated 29 July 1870, as 61 yo farmer Emanuel & 51 yo Rebecca Garmong. Son Jonas (enumerated Joseph) & wife Virginia are living next door.4 |
Move* | Emanuel and Rebecca moved their residence from Clark County to Vigo Co., Indiana before 15 November 1870.19 |
Death* | Emanuel died in December 1879 in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana. Mardis claims he died in 1880 in Warren County, Virginia.20,21,22 |
Burial* | He was buried on 27 December 1879 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.7,20,1 |
Estate-Probate* | Emanuel's will was probated on 6 January 1880. Gormong writes, 'Emanuel (Jr.) was named the executor of his father's estate on January 6, 1880. The estate was not settled till February 1882'. From this it's unclear if the 06 January date was the will and that Emanuel was a named executor, or if this was a probate date and Emanuel was appointed administrator by the court. I've been unable to find the will at Indiana, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1798-1999, though my search has not been exhaustive.21 |

Drury M. Palmer Jr.1,2,3,4,5,6
M, #769, b. 1798, d. before 23 July 1863
Birth* | Drury, son of Drury Lewis Palmer Sr. and Mary Faulkner, was born in 1798 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Drury is all over the place for birthyear in the Federal Census record; the 1830 suggests 1801-1810; the 1840 suggests 1791-1800; the 1850 & 1860 say 1798; Palmer Families says about 1806 in Christian County. Daughter Marianne's 1900 Federal census claims Drury was born in Virginia, as do Drury's own 1850 & 1860 censuses. Find A Grave & S276 both claim birth state of Virginia but without citation.1,7,5,8,9 |
Move | William, Drury, Samuel, Daniel, Esther, Sarah, Martha and Harriet joined the move of their parents from Halifax County to Christian Co., Kentucky in 1812.10,4 |
PwrAtty* | He was made attorney-in-fact for Drury M. Palmer Jr. by a power of attorney on 30 September 1823 at Halifax Co., Virginia. The document was certified before justices of Christian Co., Kentucky but recorded in Halifax Co., Virginia on 22 Mar 1824. Hamlin cites Halifax Co., Virginia, Deed Book 32, p. 178.11 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Allen Gray, daughter of Joseph Gray and Matilda Scruggs, on 13 December 1827 in Christian Co., Kentucky. The KY County Marriages entry shows a bond date of 12 Dec with marriage on 13 Dec. 13 born with 4 living on 14 Nov 1885. Palmer, Miles & NHC all mention the marriage of Drury to "Mary A" without giving her surname.12,2,4,5,13 |
Census1830 | Drury M. appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky, with a household listed as 10001-0001 as 20-29 yo Drury Palmer.14 |
Move* | Drury and Mary moved their residence from Christian County to section 7, Tebo Twp., Henry Co., Missouri in 1831. Lamkin claims "early forties".2,3,15,9 |
Census1840* | Drury M. appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Monegan, Rives Co., Missouri, with a household listed as 0210001-20001 as 40-49 yo Drury Palmer. Perfect match except Drury is listed one category too old; this is explicable if the enumeration date (rather than census date) was used in 1840 and if his birthday falls between 1 Jun and the 1840 enumeration; Rives County was renamed Henry in 1841. Brother William is in same county, brother Daniel is in adjacent Pettis County.16 |
Residence* | Drury resided in Henry Co., Missouri, in 1845. Drury's entry in Williams' extract of the Henry County Assessor's Book for 1845 reads, "Palmer, Drury, 1 poll, 1 slave $200, 3 horses $50, 10 cattle $70, 1 watch $10". His property in the Land Owner's report is as follows: 1) SW¼ of Sec. 31, Twp. 44, Range 24, 15, 2.4 acres, $400; 2) SE¼ of Sec. 36, Twp. 44, Range 25, 160 acres, $200; 3) SW¼, SE¼, Sec. 25, Twp. 44, Range 25, 40 acres, $50.17 |
Census1850 | Drury and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of probably, Filo Twp., Henry Co., Missouri, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 52 yo farmer Drury& 37 yo Mary Palmer. Their children Salvador R., Joseph Gray, Louis L., Matilda, Venezuela, Marianne, Galaher, Drury M. and William Walker were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1860 | Drury and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Henry Co., Missouri, enumerated 1 June 1860, as 62 yo farmer Drury & 47 yo Mary A Palmer. Their children Louis L., Drury M., William Walker, Kirwan Hughes and Pratt were listed as living with them.18 |
Death* | Drury died before 23 July 1863 in Windsor, Henry Co., Missouri. Lamkin's account reads, "During the Civil War, Drury Palmer was taken from his home and shot down in cold blood in his own orchard by 'bushwhackers,' on account of his sympathies with the Southern States". Miles says he was shot in his own home in 1863. Lamkin alleging southern sympathies is interesting. The term "bushwhacker" could refer to guerilla fighters on either side of the Civil War, but usually referred to Southern sympathizers, especially around Missouri. Webster's confirms this meaning. So under the normal definition, Drury would have been a Union sympathizer, murdered by Confederate guerillas. Find A Grave gives a death date from headstone of 7 Sep 1863. Something is obviously wrong here.3,19,1,8,20 |
Estate-Probate* | Drury's will was probated on 23 July 1863. Drury died intestate; "Exec. Mary A. Palmer, R. L. Avery appointed 23 July 1863, Sec. I. W. Hughes, A. Vandergrift (sic)".19 |
Burial | He was buried at Calhoun Cemetery in Calhoun, Henry Co., Missouri.1 |
