Birth*Oscar, son of Nathan Herbert Bartlett and Cora Ann Bartlett, was born on 2 August 1887 in East Turtlecreek Twp. (Lebanon PO), Warren Co., Ohio.1,2,9,10
Census1900Oscar appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mt. Healthy, Hamilton Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Nathan Herbert Bartlett and Cora Ann Bartlett, as 12 yo son Oscar Bartlett.11
Census1910Oscar appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Winfield, Cowley Co., Kansas in the household of his parents, Nathan Herbert Bartlett and Cora Ann Bartlett, as 22 yo son & dry goods clerk Oscar H Bartlett.12
ResidenceOscar resided in Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska, in 1911.13
Move*Oscar moved his residence from Gage County to Collinsville, Oklahoma in 1912.14,10
Occupation*Oscar was owner of a men's clothing store between 1912 and 1962 at Collinsville, Oklahoma. The original store was the "Fashion Clothing Store" and Bart was a co-owner. In 1930 he became sole owner and renamed the store "The New Fashion Clothing Co.".15,14,16
LandDeal*He purchased Lot 3, Block 35, in the original plat of Collinsville between 15 December 1916 and 22 November 1917. The sewer district tax assessment required three payments, one each on December 15th of 1915, 1916, and 1917. The first two coupons are blanked out, implying that Bartlett bought the property after 15 December 1916. On the back is penciled, "11/22/17 Pd cash $16.41". This is one-half the annual bill. The street improvement tax bill shows the property as "East One Half" of Lot 3, Block 35, etc. Conclusion is that Bartlett originally purchase only the east half of the lot. We have no information on who might have owned the west half.
I have two unsourced original certificates, one for water meter deposit, the other for electric meter deposit, both dated 03 Apr 1917, for the Oak Street house.17,18

BioNote*Biography Note of 8 March 1928: Following is the complete text of two articles in The Collinsville News from March 8, 1928.
First is a front page article announcing Ervie Joe's death:
"MRS. O. H. BARTLETT PASSED AWAY SATURDAY
Struggles Hard in Battle for Her Life (:CR:)After a hard struggle to live for her child Mrs. O. H. Bartlett passed away at her home in Collinsville at 11:30 A.M. last Saturday. On January 17th a baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett at the Morningside hospital, Tulsa, and due to pneumonia and complications that resulted she was unable to stand the ordeal. Friends who visited with her when permitted state that she struggled hard to win for the sake of her child. Mrs. Bartlett came to Collinsville to teach school, and met Mr. Bartlett, they being married in 1917. During her life in Collinsville she became very popular both as a teacher and as a civic and club worker here. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Kerr, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Tulsa, at the Christian church in Collinsville. The church was hardly capable of accommodating the large number of friends that came to pay their respects to their departed friend and neighbor. Many former teacher friends and fraternal friends were in attendance from out of town. The flower bearers consisting of P.E.O. members made a sad but impressive scene as they laid their flowers beside their deceased friend and endeavored to control the flow of tears. The music was splendidly rendered and the sermon given by Rev. Kerr very appropriate and touching. Burial was made at Ridgelawn cemetery. The sympathy of the community goes out to Mr. Bartlett in this climax of a number of reverses that he has been compelled to face in the near past. The News joins with the many friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased."
Second is her obituary on the back page:
"OBITUARY(:CR:)Ervie Joe Bartlett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blair, was born at Bonham, Texas, March 26th, 1890, and departed this life at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, March 3rd, 1928, in her home at Collinsville, Oklahoma, at the age of thirty-seven years, eleven months, and six days. Her early girlhood was spent in Bonham, Texas, where she completed high school. Later she attended college in Denton, Texas, and received a life diploma for teaching. In 1912 she came to Collinsville and taught in the public schools here until the time of her marriage on January 17, 1917. She was united in marriage at Whitewright, Texas, to O.H. Bartlett, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, and to this union was born one child, a daughter, Clara Ann, on January 17, 1928, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From childhood she has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church, holding her membership in the local church at the time of her death. She was a member of the local Chapter X, P.E.O., and because of her efficiency and love for the principles of P.E.O. she has filled every office in the chapter. Her memory will ever be an inspiration to her P.E.O. sisters. She has been a factor in the upbuilding and progress of our town and community; taking active part in both city and educational organizations. She had left this world of ours brighter and better just because of having passed through. Besides her husband O.H.Bartlett, little daughter Clara Ann, her father Frank Blair, brother Frank Blair, Jr., and other close relatives, she leaves a host of friends."
I have copies of a handwritten obituary signed by Rev. & Mrs. Dwight Bartlett and of another handwritten obit apparently written by a P.E.O. sister that the above newspaper columns were probably taken from. See also Frank Blair family. See Zella Vandegrift's letter for much interesting information.20,24
BioNoteBiography Note of 9 May 1945: The following is from a letter from O. H. Bartlett to his daughter Clara Ann in 1945:
"First of all let me tell you your mother was one of the finest and best women that ever lived. She was brilliant and cheerful. She was very unselfish. Not seeking after things for herself above others. We were married on Jan. 17, 1917 and you were born on our 11th anniversary. Your mother lived seven weeks after you were born - five of these were spent in the hospital and as she seemed to be getting along alright & wanted to be home so badly, we brot her home in an ambulance. The first ten days she seemed to be doing O.K. (Mrs. Mary Jordan was staying with her and taking care of her). Then suddenly there was a change. I was getting ready to take her back to the hospital and was standing by her bed when she suddenly gasped and was gone before a doctor could arrive. The specialist who attended her when you were born was Dr. J.E.McDonald of Tulsa and he told me everything happened in a normal way and that your mother did not have a hard time. After three days she developed a blood clot in her left lung & was in a very serious condition. We had special nurses (2 of them, one for days & one for nights). We had Dr. Trainor who is a very fine heart specialist and all was done that could be done to save her. If any error was made, it was in bringing her home from the hospital. However, one of the special nurses said afterward that she could not have lived even if she had been back in the hospital. She was interested in the better things of life. She enjoyed living but believed in higher standards and never lowered them by doing things that might bring discredit to her character."16
BioNoteBiography Note of circa 1953: Letter from Zella Downey Vandegrift to daughter-in-law Clara A. Vandegrift, ca. 1953, spelling and punctuation per original:
Dear Claree. Mrs Kiser come for her perm I went over - so she could hold on my arm & took her back. When I got a (?) to try & quiz her she claimed no. she opened & told me these things. when I told her. (Claree thinks if she only knew something of her mother. Your mother was a good mgr. she was super. Kiser doesn’t know any one in Collinsville who knew Joe. More. Groans just to keep some one on the line. its over. these women know what I do each day. what I eat & they have always wondered why I cooked for her. thats the way she deals. she always gets the best of any deal. Milit-Service*SSgt. Fermin Joseph "Joe" Higuera served as Staff Sergeant with the U S Air Force during the Korean War circa 1953.1
Death*Fermin died on 29 January 1995 at his home in Aurora, (home rule municipality), Colorado, at age 64.1,3
Burial*He was buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Denver Co., Colorado. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave. Mary Beth's headstone is also at Find A Grave but as of July 2020 they aren't linked.1
BioNote*Biography Note of 23 June 2024: Marie writes,
Joe's parents came from Mexico with ?? children. I believe Joe was born in the USA. He was the youngest in a family of several children. His father died at some point when Joe was very young. His mother never learned to speak English.
The rule? tradition? reality? in that family was for the oldest sibling to support the family until the next child became old enough to take over the support - which then allowed that (1st) child to marry and move out. When Joe & Mary met, Joe had joined the Air Force (as soon as he was old enough) & it was his turn to support his mother and a niece, who for some reason lived with Joe (until he left for the Air Force) & her grandmother - Joe's mother.
Joe was absolutely handsome - and was a very nice person. He was so good to Mary - And he accepted (and adopted legally) Connie - Mary's dau from her first marriage to Jay Ruby. He treated Connie in exactly the same way - a caring father - as he did Becky.7
