Birth*Kirk, son of 2nd Lt. Alfred Eugene Peter "Pete" Vandegrift and Clara Ann "Claree" Bartlett, was born on 12 November 1957 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., Kansas.1,3
Milit-Service*Kirk Alan Vandegrift served as Electrician's Mate with the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 11 October 1979. Kirk completed an 8-week Electrician Mate (Class A) School on 10 March 1977. He left the service with an honorable discharge at Seattle on 11 Oct 1979.4,5
Residence*Kirk resided at 6807 S. Holst Rd in Clinton, Island Co., Washington, on 11 October 1977.6
Marr-CoHab*Kirk Alan Vandegrift and Jonette Whiteman were living together before 13 September 1990. Date based on birthdate of daughter Jordan.
Residence*Kirk and Judy resided in Sparks, Washoe Co., Nevada, on 10 June 1996.
Marriage*His third marriage was to Judy Ann Denson on 16 May 1997 at Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada.7
Death*Kirk died on 22 February 2022 in Reno, Nevada, at age 64, of hypothermia.
Kirk's brother Bart joined a teleconference between the Reno VA Hospital and Kirk's children Sarah, Megan and Peter Vandegrift on 25 Feb to get the VA's view on Kirk's death. This is what Bart wrote to me later that day,
Kirk went to VA ER mid day Tuesday with belly pain (it sounds like he was taken there by ambulance). CT and labs did not disclose a reason to admit him to the hospital. He was discharged from the ER about 6 pm. He didn’t want to leave, but was asked to leave (reason not told us). At 6:45 VA gave him a bus pass. Megan says last bus leaves the station at 6:00. Late in the evening, campus police found him still waiting at the bus stop outside the ER. They told him no buses would be coming and they called him a cab. By the time the cab arrived, he was unresponsive. He was taken back into the ER but could not be revived. He died before midnight. Because it’s an unexplained death, VA referred it to the coroner for investigation.
The kids are wondering why VA didn’t call a cab at 6:45 instead of giving him a worthless bus pass on a very cold night.8

James Downey Sr.1,2

M, #189, b. 1765, d. 29 May 1844
Last Edited28 Jun 2024
Birth*James was born in 1765, probably in Maryland Colony, New England.3,4
Marriage*He married Mary Seborn before 12 August 1786.1,5
Religion*James was probably Methodist. Marie writes on 4 Feb 1996 that Ann, Elizabeth and Richard, children of James Sr. were all married by Oliver Langdon. Landgon was a Methodist minister, whether circuit or resident we don't know. We don't know that the Downeys were Methodists, though they were certainly Protestant. In Ireland, Marie was told that the Downey family was Protestant. She also noted that Aunt June said that her father, Charles, was very anti-Catholic. June said that Charles was a Baptist.6
Census1790James appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Washington Co., Maryland, with a household listed as 12400 as 16 yo and over James Downey. His wife Mary, sons John & Richard, and daughter Elizabeth are probably the people listed with him, as well as two unknown females.7
Census1800James appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania, with a household listed as 2111-3101 as 26-44 yo James Downey. This is a good fit but for, a) wife Mary is one bracket too old, b) one unknown female <10, and c) son John is one bracket too old.8
Residence*James resided in Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, between 1808 and 1812, based on tax lists of 1808 & 1810. Originals at The Cincinnati Historical Society.9,10
ResearchNote*Research Note of 28 August 2019 re 1810 census. It's a challenge. I find three James Downeys in Pennsylvania (Franklin, Franklin, and Fayette Counties), none in Ohio and none in Indiana. All three PA enumerations are a bad fit.

Census1820James appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 010001-10101 as >45 yo James Downey. James and Mary match perfectly. The single female 16-25 yo could be any of Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Nancy, or Rebecca. The single male 10-15 yo is likely Thomas. The single female <10 yo is unknown. Same page as James Jr. and John Downey.11
Census1830James appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 000000001-001000001 as 60-69 yo James Downey. He's living next door to son Richard and two doors from son John. The female 10-14 yo is unknown.12
Estate-Will*James Downey Sr. left a will dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana, naming his son John as executor and an heir. The only other named heir was his wife Mary. Unamed heirs were 'my Children'. Using his Settlement document of 28 Nov 1851 we find disbursements to the following children: John, Richard, James, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Thomas, and to the heirs of his deceased children Nancy, Amos and Mary.1
Census1840*James appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 0000000001-0000000001 as 70-79 yo James Downey. Five doors below is son John and two below that son Richard.13
Death*James died on 29 May 1844 in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana.3,4
BurialHe was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana.3,4
Estate-Probate*James's will was proved at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana, on 12 August 1844.14
Estate-ProbateJames's final settlement of estate happened at Dearborn Co., Indiana, on 28 November 1851. Named heirs were his children John, Richard, James, Rebecca Luther, Elizabeth Mulford and Thomas Downey. Unnamed heirs were the heirs of Nancy McAdams (deceaseed), heirs of Amos Downey (deceased) and heirs of Mary Clark (deceased).15
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 21 July 2020 re unsubstantiated online claims. James (1765-1844, definitely our man) was son of Richard Downey (1725- ) who died in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. No source citations are provided. Pure gibberish IMO.
FSTrees claims he was son of Richard Downey (1735-1789, ID no. 94BM-W9J) and that he was born in Ireland, but provides no evidence supporting these claims.
Dorrell's extract shows he died at age 79 yrs in 1844. Post cites a letter by James' grandson Omer which states that James was "born in North of Ireland in 1765."

Birth*James, son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born between 1792 and 1795 in Pennsylvania. Find A Grave & Dorrell say died age 86 years implying birth ca. 1792; the 1850 Federal Census agrees. The 1820 puts his earliest birthyear as 1795. His father's estate settlement names James as an heir, but not specifically as a son. Abdallah says he was born in Hagerstown, Maryland.3,4,5,6
Census1800James is probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.7
Marriage*His first marriage was to Uphama Hill, daughter of James Hill and Mary Lnu, before 7 August 1820. Several of their children's headstones say 'son of James & Uphama Downey' so there's no doubt. Find A Grave lists three sons as 'calculated' - Amos (1820-1891), Jeremiah (1825-1899), and Thomas H (1832-1912).8,9,10,3,4
Census1820James appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 0001-00101 as 19-25 yo James Downey Junior. James may be one bracket too young. The female 45 and over is currently unknown but definitely not Mary Seborn. A good chance this person is Euphemia's mother.8
Census1830James appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Switzerland Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 221001-000001, a perfect match.11
Estate-WillJames was named an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., his father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.12
Census1840*James appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 0103001-0001001 as 40-49 yo James Downe. One each male & female 15-19 is currently unknown. Everyone else fits well.13
Census1850James and Uphama appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 52 yo farmer James & 58 yo Uphema Downey. Their son Thomas Hill was listed as living with them, as well as 13 yo Ann & 11 yo William Ferguson, relationship unknown, both born Ireland.14
Estate-ProbateJohn Downey, Richard B. Downey, James Downey Jr., Rebecca Downey, Sarah Downey, Elizabeth Downey and Thomas Downey were listed as beneficiaries in James Downey Sr.'s will at Dearborn Co., Indiana, on 28 November 1851; Named heirs were his children John, Richard, James, Rebecca Luther, Elizabeth Mulford and Thomas Downey. Unnamed heirs were the heirs of Nancy McAdams (deceaseed), heirs of Amos Downey (deceased) and heirs of Mary Clark (deceased.)2
Census1860*James and Uphama appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Allensville PO, Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 22 August 1860, as 66 yo farmer James & 76 yo Uphemia Downey.15
Census1870James and Uphama appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of East Enterprise, Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 23 September 1870, as 72 yo farmer James & 78 yo Euphama Downey. Best guess is that the James Samuel Downey living with them is their grandson, son of Amos & Mary Glena Downey. Age matches perfectly.16
Marriage*His second marriage was to Euridice Lamkin on 2 December 1874 at Switzerland Co., Indiana.17,10
Death*James died on 13 September 1878 in East Enterprise, Switzerland Co., Indiana. Recorder obit is in "Neighborhood News" section, under community of East Enterprise. News obit refers to location as "near Allensville".5,18,19
Burial*He was buried at Cunningham Cemetery, Switzerland Co., Indiana.4,5
Estate-Probate*James's will was probated at Switzerland Co., Indiana, from 15 October 1878 to 19 January 1881.20

Euridice Lamkin1,2

F, #193, b. 20 March 1805, d. 18 April 1885
Last Edited24 Apr 2024
Birth*Euridice was born on 20 March 1805 in Stratford, Coos Co., New Hampshire. Considering Euridice's 18 you grandson with surname Mendel in the 1880 census it stands to reason that this is not her maiden name but a married name from a prior spouse.1,3
Marriage*She married Abijah Mendell in 1828, date per Find A Grave. My preliminary research suggests their children were Charles W (1825-1901, m. Margaret D Piatt), Roxanna (c1828- ), Lucy Euridice (1831-1911, m. William B Lotton), Sarah (c1832- ), Eliza (c1835- ), Melissa Adelia (1839- ), Mary A (1844-1906, m. Aaron B Vanatter), Euridice (c1847- ), and Polly Mendell (c1851- ). I have complete census info on this couple.
I believe that Charles W & Margaret D Mendell's children were George Washington (1847-1928), Wesley Sanford (c1850- ), Mary W (c1854- ), Emma Mendell (c1857- ), Scott (c1861- , perhaps s/o Charles & Margaret as there are no other males in Mendell line and Scott shows up as grandson of Abijah & Euridice in 1870 & 1880), and Theron F Mendell (c1864- ). I have nearly complete census info on this couple.
My research further suggests that William B & Lucy Euridice Lotton's only child was Eliza Jane Lotton (1859-1936).
Finally, Aaron B & Mary A Vanatter's children were probably Lenna Vanatter (c1870- ), and Cora Lucretia Vanatter (1876-1963).4
Marriage*She married James Downey Jr., son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, on 2 December 1874 in Switzerland Co., Indiana.5,6
Census1880*Euridice appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 15 June 1880, as 75 yo widow Euradice Downey. Her 18 yo grandson Scott Mendel was living with her.3
Death*Euridice died on 18 April 1885 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, at age 80.1
Burial*She was buried at Allensville Cemetery in Allensville, Switzerland Co., Indiana.1

ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 April 2021 re dearth of sources. If it wasn't for his father's probate records I'd have nothing on Amos. Ancestry & FamilySearch don't have anything. I've found neither census nor Find A Grave records. His daughter Ann's death certificate lists Amos as her father but the mother's line is blank.1

Birth*Amos, son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born between 1790 and 1800. His father's estate settlement names Amos (deceased) as an heir, but not specifically as a son.3,1
Census1800Amos is probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.3

Death*Amos died before 28 November 1851. Settlement lists one heir - Elizabeth McAdams.1

MotherMary Seborn2 b. 1769, d. 3 May 1850
Last Edited21 Oct 2022
Birth*Rebecca, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born circa 1803 in Pennsylvania.3,1
Marriage*She married Abraham Luther on 22 November 1827 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Settlement provides husband's surname only.1,3
Estate-WillRebecca was named an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., her father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.4
Census1840Rebecca is probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, Abraham Luther, in the 1840 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana.5
Census1850*Rebecca and Abraham appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Boone Co., Kentucky, enumerated 16 September 1850, as 46 yo Abraham & 47 yo Rebecca Luther. Their children Jonathan, Elizabeth, James, Francis and Cornelius C. were listed as living with them. The census confirms Rebecca born Pennsylvania and children born Indiana so I've no doubt this is the correct couple even though Kentucky seems far fetched.3
Estate-ProbateJohn Downey, Richard B. Downey, James Downey Jr., Rebecca Downey, Sarah Downey, Elizabeth Downey and Thomas Downey were listed as beneficiaries in James Downey Sr.'s will at Dearborn Co., Indiana, on 28 November 1851. As Rebecca Luther; Named heirs were his children John, Richard, James, Rebecca Luther, Elizabeth Mulford and Thomas Downey. Unnamed heirs were the heirs of Nancy McAdams (deceaseed), heirs of Amos Downey (deceased) and heirs of Mary Clark (deceased.)2
Death*Rebecca died after 28 November 1851.1

Joseph Mulford1

M, #199, b. 1 May 1785, d. 8 June 1850
Last Edited27 Apr 2024
Birth*Joseph was born on 1 May 1785 in Essex Co., New Jersey.2
Marriage*He married Elizabeth Downey, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, on 23 September 1809 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. Settlement provides only husband's surname. Ancestry's Brynn-Warriner tree claims another son, Joseph (1809- ), for whom I've found no real evidence. He might be one of the two 10-16 yo males in the 1820 census.3,1
Census1820*Joseph appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Turtlecreek, Warren Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 21111-3101, as 26-44 yo male J Mulford. The following family members fit this enumeration well: 26-44 wife Elizabeth, 10-15 yo possible son Joseph (whom I've not entered in the dB), 10-15 yo daughter Mary, <10 yo son John, <10 yo son Harvey, and <10 yo daughter Rebecca.
Issues:
There are two unknown males in the 16-18 and 16-26 yo brackets, who may be the same person.
There are two extra females in the >10 bracket. Perhaps one of the three sons who should be in this bracket was enumerated as a female.
None of Joe & Elizabeth's kids are married yet so the extra bodies are most likely nephews & nieces rather than grandchildren.4
Census1830Joseph appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 1311001-0010001 as 40-49 yo male Joseph Mulford. The following family members were probably listed with him: namely, 40-49 yo wife Elizabeth, either John or Harvey in the 15-19 yo male slot, James as 10-14 yo male, Rebecca as 10-14 yo female, Amos & David as two of the three 5-9 yo males, and Russell as the <5 yo male.
Not perfect but it's close. There's also a Joseph Mulford in Turtlecreek Twp. but the one in Hamilton Twp. is a much better fit.5
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 27 February 2021 re 1840 census. I searched the following Warren Co, OH, townships w/o success for Joseph Mulford - Deerfield, Hamilton, Salem, and Turtlecreek.

Death*Joseph died on 8 June 1850 in Shelby Co., Ohio, at age 65, of scarlet fever. The 1850 Mortality Schedule covers the year ending 01 June 1850 so Joe's death year is probably 1849. However his headstone says 1850.2,6
Burial*He was buried at Indian Creek Cemetery, Shelby Co., Ohio. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 18 June 2018 re Joseph's WikiTree profile. I've not yet tried to verify any of it. Sources cited by WikiTree are at the end of this ResearchNote.
Joseph Gardiner Conklin Mulford, Landowner, Cattleman, Planter.
He and his sons appear in multiple records not only as Mulford, but also as Munford repeatedly (due to this family's ancient and enduring pronunciation of Mulford with "NO L" and a nasalized "n" sound instead). His exact birth date is clearly given on his tombstone, in days, months, and years. As a boy he did live in Pennsylvania for a while. He died of scarlet fever, in an epidemic which took several of his grandchildren.
In the early days of the internet there was dispute over which Benjamin Mulford was his father, but this has long since been resolved, beyond all doubt. Bible, land, tax, and marriage records (and now DNA evidence) prove he was the brother of Daniel Mulford and son of Anna Gildersleeve and Benjamin Mulford, son of Jeremiah Mulford II of New York and New Jersey. Although some still insist, without proof, that Joseph was the son of Revolutionary War Pvt Benjamin Mulford, son of Jeremiah's cousin Lewis Mulford, it was Benjamin son of Jeremiah who had the son named Daniel while Benjamin son of Lewis did not.

DNA test results of Martyn Mulford, great-great-great-grandson of Joseph Mulford, are matched at the AncestryDNA site with cousins descended from the Downey family and with cousins descended from Joseph's older brother Daniel Mulford, son of Benjamin and Anna Mulford, and with cousins descended from both the Baker and Hedges families, confirming prior documentation that Joseph's parents truly were Benjamin and Anna as well as prior documentation that Benjamin's parents truly were Martha Baker and Jeremiah Mulford II, the well-documented son of Abigail Hedges and Jeremiah Mulford I of East Hampton, the Hamptons, New York.

John Downey1

M, #200, b. 12 August 1786, d. 19 July 1863
FatherJames Downey Sr.2,1 b. 1765, d. 29 May 1844
MotherMary Seborn2 b. 1769, d. 3 May 1850
Last Edited28 Jun 2024
Birth*John, son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born on 12 August 1786 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland. Hagerstown per Abdallah.3,4,5
Census1790John is probably one of the two males under age 16 listed in the household of James Downey Sr., in the 1790 Federal Census of Washington Co., Maryland.6
Census1800John is probably the male under age 16 to 25 listed in the household of his father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.7
Marriage*He married Susanna Selwood on 7 September 1807 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. John and Susanna may have had four or more other children not included in this database. The 1820 and 1830 censuses both suggest another daughter aged close to Sarah and another son aged close to Alexander. The 1820 has one more unexplained female under 10, the 1830 has one aged 5-9. Perhaps sloppy enumeration, perhaps two different individuals. FSTrees claims a second son named Alexander, born 1835, but I don't find any evidence supporting such a claim and FSTrees, as usual, provides no source citations.8,4
Arrivals*John Downey and Susanna Selwood arrived at 'the southern part' of Dearborn Co., Ohio, in 1818, moving from Hamilton Co., Ohio. Their son Alexander Cummins arrived with them.4,9
Census1820John appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 20001-2201 as 26-45 yo male John Downey. Wife Susanna is likely the female 26-44, daughters Fnu & Sarah 10-15, sons George & Alex under 10, daughters Eliza & Phoebe under 10. All accounted for.10
Census1830John appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 1120001-01101011 as 40-49 yo John Dawney. Susanna is probably the female 40-49, Fnu the female 20-29 (sister Sarah is already married), George & Alex the two males 10-14, Phoebe two female 10-14, with an unknown male & female 5-9, and Fnu the unknown male under 5. The female 50-59 is unknown, possibly Susannah's mother or a sister. Daughter Eliza was married in 1829. Next door above is Richard Downey.11
Estate-WillJohn was named executor and an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., his father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.1
Census1840*John appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 01100001--00002001 as 50-59 yo John Downey. Wife Susannah is likely the female 50-59, daughter Fnu the female 20-29, son Fnu the male 10-14, and son Caleb the male 5-9. One female 20-29 is unknown, unless Phoebe was enumerated twice (here and with her husband.)12
Census1850John and Susanna appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rising Sun, Dearborn Co., Indiana, enumerated 20 August 1850, as 63 yo shoemaker John & 58 yo Susana Downey. Their son Caleb F. was listed as living with them. Also in the home were unknown persons Hugh Love & Hugh Elliott, river pilots, and Edward Granger, a river trader.13
Census1860*John and Susanna appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 10 July 1860, as 73 yo retired John & 69 yo Susanna Downey.14
Death*John died on 19 July 1863 in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana, at age 76. Find A Grave claims Sarah is the daughter of John & Susanna Selwood Downey.4,5
Burial*He was buried at Union Cemetery in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.15

Last Edited21 Oct 2022
Birth*Mary, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born between 1790 and 1800. Her father's estate settlement names Mary Clark (deceased) as an heir, but not specifically as a daughter.3,1
Census1800Mary is probably one of the three females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.3
Marriage*She married Fnu Clark before 27 November 1851. Settlement provides husband's surname only. Date added to force display before death. Circumstantial evidence suggests his name was Nathaniel. We have a Mary Clark (1789-1850) who m. Nathaniel Clark (1786-1841), both buried Rising Sun Cemetery. There's a Nathaniel Clark in the 1840 Dearborn, IN census listing 01101101-0010201.1
Estate-WillMary was named an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., his father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.4
Death*Mary died before 28 November 1851. Settlement lists two heirs: Jerusha Dancer (? both names unclear), and Eliza Grace, née Clark. Find A Grave has a Mary Clark (1816-1851), buried Union Cemetery, Rising Sun, Ohio Co., IN who may be this person. Another with dates 1789-1850, bur. Rising Sun Cemetery is more likely.1

Birth*Nancy, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, was born between 1791 and 1801 in Pennsylvania. See the Research Note re birth and death dates.2,1,5
ResearchNote*Research Note of 29 April 2021 re birth & death dates. Find A Grave claims she was born in 1801 in Pennsylvania without citation but the headstone, which is quite hard to read even with enhancement, doesn't appear to support that. The headstone seems to say she died Aug 12, 1855 at age 58y 2m 2d. If I've read the tombstone correctly that works out to a birthdate of 10 Jun 1797. Ancestry's McHenry-Fields tree also says 1801 in Pennsylvania without any source. FSTrees's tree (LC2X-RNL) claims 1797 in Madison Co, Kentucky but the source cited (her Find A Grave memorial) doesn't support either the date or state. The 1820 census puts Ann in the 26-44 yo slot suggesting a latest birthyear of ca. 1794.
Our death date of bef. 16 Oct 1850 is based on fact she's missing in the Federal census of that date. Dearborn Probate implies death before 28 Nov 1851 when her father left money "to the heirs of Nancy McAdams". Her Find A Grave memorial shows a death date of Aug 1854. The headstone date is unclear but the age at death appears to say 'aged 38 years 2 months and 2 days', which would put her death in 1849 and jive with the 1850 census. Weakly says she died Aug 1854.6

Census1800Nancy is probably one of the three females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.7
Marriage*She married Sooter McAdams between 1811 and 1819 in Ohio, date based on Weakly's comment. They were married in Ohio, and in 1819 moved to Indiana. Ann's headstone at Find A Grave reads in part, Ann wife of Sooter McAdams. Find A Grave claims a marriage year of 1811 but that only works if Nancy was born near the early end of the range 1791-1801. Dearborn Probate lists six heirs of Nancy: Elizabeth Suits and her husband Walter, Nancy Evans and her husband Thomas, John McAdams, Catharine McAdams, Susannah McAdams and James McAdams.
Weakly claims Sooter was married again after Nancy's death and fathered twenty-three children overall, eighteen by m1 Nancy (sixteen of whom lived to "near maturity") and five by m2 Elizabeth.8,9,5,10,1
Move*Nancy and Sooter moved their residence from Ohio to Indiana in 1819, settling in Hartford, Union Township "but soon after removed into Cass Township, and settled in the Downey neighborhood".5
Census1820Nancy is probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Sooter McAdams, in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana.11
Census1830Nancy is probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, Sooter McAdams, in the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana.12
Estate-WillNancy was named an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., her father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.13
Census1840Nancy is probably the female age 40 to 49 listed in the household of her husband, Sooter McAdams, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.14
Death*Nancy died before 16 October 1850 in Ohio Co., Indiana, based on fact she is missing in the 1850 census and her children are living with Sooter. See the Research Note re birth and death dates.15,2,1,16
Burial*She was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana. Find A Grave writes, "Not certain buried here", giving a death year of 1854.2

Sooter McAdams1,2,3

M, #204, b. 10 September 1790, d. 2 May 1873
Last Edited13 Dec 2024
Birth*Sooter was born on 10 September 1790 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, aka Suter (Find A Grave), Suiter, etc.4,2,5
Marriage*His first marriage was to Nancy Ann Downey, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, between 1811 and 1819 at Ohio, date based on Weakly's comment.
Weakly claims Sooter was married again after Nancy's death and fathered twenty-three children overall, eighteen by m1 Nancy (sixteen of whom lived to "near maturity") and five by m2 Elizabeth.6,7,2,3,8
Milit-Service*Sooter McAdams served as a soldier during the War of 1812 . Dearborn writes he "was one of the number who volunteerred to enter Canada, and make aggressive warfare there, and, as a reward at the close of the war, received a discharge giving special credit for that daring feat".9
Occupation*Sooter was apprenticed as a shoemaker before 1818 at Lebanon, Ohio.9
Move*Sooter and Nancy moved their residence from Ohio to Indiana in 1819, settling in Hartford, Union Township "but soon after removed into Cass Township, and settled in the Downey neighborhood".2
Census1820Sooter appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 40001-2001 as 26-44 yo Sooter McAdams. Wife Ann is the female 26-44, daughter Elizabeth one of the two females <10, son James one of the four males <10. The other female <10 and three males <10 yo are currently unknown.10
Census1830Sooter appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 0030001-320001 as 40-49 yo Sooter McCadams. His wife Ann is the female 30-39, son James one of three males 10-14, daughter Catharine one of two females 5-9, and daughter Susannah one of three females 0-4 yo. Presently unknown are two males 10-14, one female 5-9, and two females <5.11
Census1840Sooter appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 11002001-1222001 as 50-59 yo Sooter McAdams. Wife Nancy is likely the female 40-49. Currently unknown are one male 20-29, one female 15-19, one female 10-14, and one female <5.12
Census1850Sooter appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 16 October 1850, as 61 yo farmer Sooter McAdams. His children Susannah, Sooter, Mary Elizabeth and Walter Spielman were listed as living with him. The 1850 makes no distinction of marital status or relationships but the obvious conclusion is that wife Nancy Ann has died.13
Marriage*His second marriage was to Elizabeth Lnu on 14 November 1853 at Ohio Co., Indiana. Sooter is single with children in the 1850 census. Weakly claims he m2 Elizabeth Mulford and had five children but names none of them.14,15,5
Census1860Sooter and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Union Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 26 June 1860, as 70 yo shoemaker Suter & 40 yo wife Elizabeth McAdams. Their children 12 yo Mary, 8 yo Maria, 5 yo Jerome, 4 yo William, 3 yo Andrew, and 1 yo Hannah were listed as living with them. Mary should have been in the 1850 census but isn't so perhaps she's one of Elizabeth's from a prior marriage. The other five are likely Sooter & Elizabeth's.16
Census1870*Sooter and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hartford, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 11 July 1870, as 90 yo farmer Suter & 48 yo Elizabeth McAdams. Their children 16 yo Jerome, 14 yo William, 10 yo Jackson, 9 yo Catherine, and 7 yo Mary McAdams were listed as living with them. Suter should be about 80, not 90 yo. Jerome & William first appeared in the 1860. Jackson was probably 3 yo Andrew in the 1860. Catherine & Mary are recent additions to the family.17
Death*Sooter died on 2 May 1873 in Ohio Co., Indiana, at age 82. Dearborn & Ohio gives death year as 1874.4,9
Burial*He was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana.4

Abraham Luther1

M, #205, b. circa 1804
Last Edited21 Oct 2022
Birth*Abraham was born circa 1804 in New York.1
Marriage*He married Rebecca Downey, daughter of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, on 22 November 1827 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Settlement provides husband's surname only.2,1
Census1840*Abraham appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 211001-010001 as 30-39 yo Abraham C. Luther. One son in the 10-14 range is missing|.3
Census1850*Abraham and Rebecca appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Boone Co., Kentucky, enumerated 16 September 1850, as 46 yo Abraham & 47 yo Rebecca Luther. Their children Jonathan, Elizabeth, James, Francis and Cornelius C. were listed as living with them. The census confirms Rebecca born Pennsylvania and children born Indiana so I've no doubt this is the correct couple even though Kentucky seems far fetched.1

Our year of 1788 is from the 1870 census and Sheffield. Post cites a letter from son Omer, written in 1905, which clearly says Richard is James' son and that Richard was born in central Pennsylvania on the "Blue Jumatte (possibly Juniata) in 1789". Omer's sister Amanda claimed Richard was born in Pennsylvania. Richard's father's estate settlement names Richard as an heir..4,5
Census1790Richard is probably one of the two males under age 16 listed in the household of James Downey Sr., in the 1790 Federal Census of Washington Co., Maryland.6
Census1800Richard is probably the male under age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, James Downey Sr., in the 1800 Federal Census of Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.7
Marriage*His first marriage was to Phebe Mulford on 17 November 1809 at Hamilton Co., Ohio.8
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 23 October 2022 re purported children. The following children are purported by researcher Sandra Sheffileld. I've not yet found any evidence in support.
Jane, d/o Richard & Sarah, 15 Aug 1845 - 11 Apr 1847, both events in Ohio Co., Indiana. Sheffield cites records of Society of Indiana Pioneers. As of 24 Oct 2022 none of their records are available online. As with DAR and similar societies the sources cited may or may not be worth much.

Religion*Richard B. was Methodist. Burress lists preacher who married Richard & Phebe as Rev. Oliver Langdon, a Methodist.8
MoveRichard and Phebe moved their residence from Ohio to Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana in 1818.9
Census1820*Richard B. appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 21001-3001 as 26-44 yo Richard Downey.10
Census1830Richard B. appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 2011001-0221001 as 40-49 yo Richard Downey. Brother John is next door to one side and father James to the other, One short in the under 5 males. Who is missing?11
Estate-WillRichard was named an heir in the will of James Downey Sr., his father, dated 19 December 1838 at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., Indiana.12
Census1840*Richard B. appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 00120001-01010001 as 50-59 yo Richard Downey. Son Amos is probably one bracket too young. Brother John's family is on same page.13
ResearchNote*Research Note of 30 July 2020 re three wives? Some sources, among them History of Dearborn & Ohio Counties, claim that Richard had three wives and that one of them was the widow of one of his brothers.
He m1 Phebe (or Phoebe) Mulford in 1809, m2 Sarah Dennis in 1841. The census record supports the two wives. Sarah Dennis's census record begins in 1850. She shows with Richard through 1870 and is widowed HOH in 1880 with four of their kids still in the home. Phebe died in 1841, Richard in 1877, Sarah in 1884. So it seems this 'third wife' must have been between 1841 and 1850, or possibly before Richard & Phebe were married in 1809.14

Marriage*His second marriage was to Sarah Dennis on 23 December 1841 at Rising Sun, Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.15,16,17
Census1850Richard and Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 62 yo farmer Richard & 33 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Hannah, Dennis, Rebecca and Richard Crayton were listed as living with them, as well as unknown person 12 yo Thosmas Bear. Son William W. Downey and his wife Elizabeth live next door.18
Census1860*Richard and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Coopersville, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 8 June 1860, as 62 yo farmer Richard & 41 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Dennis, Rebecca, Richard Crayton, Eliza, Omer L., George Bruce and Amanda were listed as living with them.19
Census1870Richard and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cass Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 18 July 1870, as 82 yo farmer Richard & 52 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Dennis, Richard Crayton, Eliza, Omer L., George Bruce, Amanda and Rebecca were listed as living with them.20
Estate-Will*Richard B. Downey left a will dated 5 February 1876 at Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana, naming no executor. His named heirs were George Bruce Downey, Omer L. Downey, Sarah Dennis and Jeanette Elizabeth "Junettia" Lewis. His disabled son Dennis was mentioned as needing lifetime care by his mother, Richard's wife, Sarah.
It's unclear who Richard meant by 'my three daughters'. Rachel, Rebecca, Eliza, and Amanda all died after the will was written according to current understanding. Mary's death date is unknown but this suggests she died before the will.21
Death*Richard died before 26 March 1877 in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana. Researcher Sandra F Sheffield claims 07 Mar 1877 but I've found no supporting evidence.22
Burial*He was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana. Researcher Sandra F Sheffield claims he's buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co, Indiana, but I've found no supporting evidence.
Estate-ProbateRichard's will was probated at Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana, on 26 March 1887.23

Hugh Brown Downey1

M, #209, b. circa 1820, d. 12 February 1881
FatherJames Downey Jr.2 b. bt 1792 - 1795, d. 13 Sep 1878
MotherUphama Hill3 b. c 1792, d. 5 Oct 1873
Last Edited24 Apr 2024
ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 November 2023 re Brown's mother. I've found no primary source directly linking HBD to Uphama Hill. However the circumstantial evidence is strong. E.g. Cunningham Cemetery - James Jr & Uphama are buried there as well as 4 of their five sons, viz.Henry Anders, James Hill, and Samuel C. Downey. Two other Downeys at Cunninham were HBD's m1 Mary Ann Leatherbury and their grandson Samuel F Downey (s/o HBD & Mary Ann L). HBD is buried at Vevay Cemetery.
Evidence supporting James Jr as his father includes the fact that HBD & Mary Ann had a son Amos Seborn Downey. James Jr's mother was Mary Seborn. Also, in the 1850 Census HBD & Mary Ann have Brown's brother Henry living with them. Neither of these are directly related to Uphama Hill but they establish multiple family ties.

Birth*Hugh, son of James Downey Jr. and Uphama Hill, was born circa 1820 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Service record provides Ohio Co. which was formed from Dearborn Co. in 1844; Recorder gives his age as 61 at death; 1850 census supports ca. year and state. He is not present in the 1820 census of circa 1 August.4,5,6,7,8
Census1830Hugh is probably the male age 10 to 14 listed in the household of his father, James Downey Jr., in the 1830 Federal Census of Switzerland Co., Indiana.9
Marr-LicenseHugh applied for a marriage license to wed Mary Ann Leatherberry at Vevay, Switzerland Co., Indiana, on 26 February 1840.10
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary Ann Leatherberry, daughter of Charles Leatherberry and Ann Porter, on 27 February 1840 at Switzerland Co., Indiana.11,10,1,12,13
Census1840Hugh Brown appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of division allotted to John Moore, McLean Co., Illinois, with a household listed as 00001-10001 as 20-29 yo H B Downey.14
Census1850Hugh and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 3 August 1850, as 29 yo farmer Hugh B & 29 yo Mary A Downey. Their children Samuel F. and Zella Ann were listed as living with them, as well as Hugh's 24 yo lawyer brother Henry Downey.15
Census1860*Hugh and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1860, as 39 yo farmer H B & 39 yo Mary A Downey. Their children Zella Ann, Charles and Henry Perry were listed as living with them, as well as Mary Ann's 80 up father Charles Leatherberry.16
Estate-WillHugh was mentioned in the will of Charles Leatherberry, as his son-in-law, dated 22 August 1860 at Switzerland Co., Indiana, stating Hugh owed Charles ten promissory notes of $200 each for land purchsed from Charles.17
Description*Hugh was blue eyed with brown hair and a fair complexion according to his military records. He was 5'-11¼" tall on 27 May 1862 at Vevay, Switzerland Co., Indiana.7
Milit-ServiceHugh Brown Downey served as a Corporal with Company C, 54th Regiment Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War from 27 May 1862 to 12 September 1865. Hugh's first enlistment was the earlier date above, by Capt. Tinker for a term of 3 months. He was duly mustered into the Military Service of the United States at Indianapolis on the 30th day of May 1862, for the term of three months by Col. Simonson, United States Army Mustering Officer." A second NPS entry shows Hugh mustering into Co. D, 125th Regiment, 10th Indiana Cavalry, this time as a Private, on 11 Jan 1864 at Columbus, Indiana. He mustered out of the service at Indianapolis on 12 Sep 1865.
Ellen's Widow's Declaration gives a conflicting first enlistment date of 9 Dec 1863. The Nolks affadavit claims discharge date of 31 Aug 1865.7,18,19,13,20,21,22,23
Marriage*His second marriage was to Eleanor "Ellen" Corter on 4 July 1866 at New Marion, Ripley Co., Indiana. The General Affadavit gives a date of 3 July. MyIndianaHome claims Switzerland Co, Indiana. Perhaps this was a license location.13,24,25,26
Census1870Hugh and Eleanor appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Versailles, Ripley Co., Indiana, enumerated 4 August 1870, as 50 yo sawmill worker H B & 24 yo Ellen Downey. Their children Susanna May and Irvin D. were listed as living with them. The person enumerated in Susanna May's position is called "Marion" and is a male; a misunderstanding is about all that makes sense.27
Estate-ProbateHugh Brown Downey was the administrator of James Downey Jr.'s estate at Switzerland Co., Indiana, from 15 October 1878 to 19 January 1881.28
Census1880*Hugh and Eleanor appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Pike Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 59 yo miller Brown & 36 yo wife Ellen Downey. Their children Susanna May, Irvin D., Sophia, Euridyce "Dicie", Lizzie and Nettie were listed as living with them.29
Death*Hugh died on 12 February 1881 in Vevay, Switzerland Co., Indiana. He "died suddenly in Vevay, aged 61 years, leaving a wife and four children" according to The Recorder.30,31,13,8
Burial*He was buried at Vevay Cemetery in Vevay, Switzerland Co., Indiana. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.32,33

Birth*Charles, son of Thomas Leatherberry and Lydia Dudley, was born on 17 October 1779 in Queen Anne's Co., Maryland. The 1850 Federal confirms year and state; the 1860 confirms ca. 1780 but has wrong state; according to his father's will Charles was younger than his brother John; Richmond confirms MD, but not county.3,4,2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 31 May 2017 re his parents. Our acceptance of Thomas & Lydia as the parents of Charles is based on two pieces of evidence. First a will of Thomas that mentions a son Charles. It's in Maryland at the right time, but not entirely compelling. The second is the Harry Richmond pedigree chart. By itself not enough either, but Harry was born 1893 and probably knew his grandmother Amelia Jane (she d. 1919). He has exact dates for birth & death for both Charles and Ann. In combination the two sources look pretty good, but I'd like more. Maybe something where Charles names his sibs so we can compare with the Thomas Leatherberry will.
If the 1850 & 1860 are correct about Mary Ann being born in Indiana in 1821 then we ought to be able to find censuses for Charles for 1840, 1830 and possibly 1820 in Indiana. Main reason would be to look for male sibs nearby.

Census1790Charles is probably one of the three males under age 16 listed in the household of Thomas Leatherberry, in the 1790 Federal Census of Queen Anne's Co., Maryland.5
Estate-WillCharles was named an heir in the will of Thomas Leatherberry, his father, dated 3 April 1794 at Queen Anne's Co., Maryland, receiving land.1
Marriage*He married Ann Porter, daughter of Thomas Porter and Sarah Price, on 21 May 1818. 1850 census provides Ann's first name only.4,2
Census1820Charles appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of (now Suffolk City), Nansemond Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 00001-001 as >45 yo Charles Leatherbury. His wife Ann was in the same household.6
Census1830*Charles appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Switzerland Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 111001-110001 as 30-39 yo Charles Leatherberry. Brother Thomas is listed next, though the list is alphabetical so means nothing about being neighbors. The male 10-14 yo is unknown. Not an exact match and the female 5-9 could be Mary Ann or Lydia.7
Census1850*Charles and Ann appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 71 yo farmer Charles & 54 yo Ann Leatherberry. Their children Abner D., Perry, Parthena, Charles T. and Amelia Jane were listed as living with them. Daughter Amelia's 23 yo teacher husband Silvester Richmond was also living with them.4
Census1860Charles appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, as as 80 yo farmer Charles Leatherberry in the household of his son-in-law & daughter Hugh Brown Downey and Mary Ann Leatherberry; as 39 yo farmer H B & 39 yo Mary A Downey.8
Estate-Will*Charles Leatherberry left a will dated 22 August 1860 at Switzerland Co., Indiana, naming son-in-law William J Gibbs his executor. Named heirs included daughters Mary, Lydia, Parthena and Amelia and sons Perry, Abner and Charles.9
Death*Charles died on 7 April 1866 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, at age 86.2
Estate-Probate*Charles's will was probated at Switzerland Co., Indiana, on 4 September 1866. Ref. 1866, Book 3, p. 9.10,11
