Census1840Washington appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 01111001-1002101 as 50-59 yo Washington Hamilton. Joseph Bartlett1

M, #402, b. circa 1630, d. 26 December 1702
Last Edited6 Jan 2025
Birth*Joseph was born circa 1630.2
Immigration*Joseph immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England, before 27 October 1668. Hibner writes, I have been unable to find any clue to the parentage of Joseph Bartlett. His deposition in the Clark case given above would indicate that he came as a lone immigrant and was unrelated to any of the other Bartlett families who were residents of the country.3
Marriage*He married Mary Waite on 27 October 1668 in Cambridge (now Newton), Middlesex Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England. Date per NEHGS & Hibner. Early Settlement's date is 27 August. NEHGS notes the intents were not recorded. Perhaps the 27 Aug date is intents, though exactly one month prior to marriage is a bit too tidy.
Birth order of children is as listed in Savage.4,5,2,1
Event-Misc*Joseph was one of the freemen signers of a petition to have the area on the south side of the Charles River, then known as Cambridge Village, split from the town of Cambridge and incorporated in its own right on 8 May 1678 at Newton.6
Residence*Joseph resided in Newton circa 1700, "on the north side of the hill occupied by the Newton Theological Institution, about ninety rods southeast of the railroad station".4,7
Death*Joseph died on 26 December 1702 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.8,2,1
Estate-AdminHis administration of estate began on 8 January 1703 at Cambridge, Suffolk Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. The estate inventory totalled £17.11.06.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 8 April 2011 re PRF claims. FamlySearch Pedgiree Resource File for Adoniram Bartlett (TMG 435) claims without citation the following,
Joseph's parents are Robert Bartlett (1603-1688) & Mary Warren (bef 1605-1676). Hibner disputes this. Robert's (1603) parents were Robert Barttelot (1579-1655) and "Mrs. Thomas Bartlett" (1567-?). Mary Warren's parents were Richard Warren (1580-1627) and Elizabeth Lnu (c1583-1673).
Ignore all this junk and stick with Hibner.

Fnu Robinson1

M, #410
Last Edited14 Dec 2024
Birth*Fnu was born. His first name perhaps William, son of Samuel Robinson and Martha Hawkins, born 29 Jul 1761 in Salem, died 25 Dec 1719 in Boston. I find no evidence showing that this Robinson is the same one who married Mary Bartlett. It's plausible given the dates and places involved.2
Marriage*He married Mary Bartlett, daughter of Joseph Bartlett and Mary Waite, circa 1711 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England, date estimated. Hibner cites "Court rec". They may have had a son William Robinson II (1708-1790).3,4,1

Hannah Lnu1,2

F, #413, b. circa 1677, d. 26 December 1730
Last Edited31 Jan 2025
Birth*Hannah was born circa 1677. Hibner writes re her surname, "the Rice Family says Hannah Hyde, but I can find nothing to substantiate it". Date is guess at 18 years prior to birth of first child listed in Hibner.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 10 August 2011 re PRF claims. FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File for Adoniram Bartlett claims Hannah's surname was Hyde and that her parents were Jonathan & Dorothy (Kidder) Hyde. They are nos. 1359 & 1359 in our database, but I'm not yet showing them as Hannah's parents. Stowell gives compelling evidence that the Hannah, daughter of Jonathan & Dorothy, was married to John Woodward.4,5

Marriage*She married Joseph Bartlett Jr., son of Joseph Bartlett and Mary Waite, before 17 February 1695, date estimated from birthdate of first child listed in Hibner. Hibner lists Sarah & Elizabeth as 'probable', and Richard as 'supposed son'. Jackson concurs in the "probable" for Richard.6,3,1
Death*Hannah died on 26 December 1730 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Savage & Jackson say only Dec 1730.6,7,2,1

Birth*Thomas, son of Joseph Bartlett Jr. and Hannah Lnu, was born on 26 July 1697 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Find A Grave's date is 25 July.6,7,8
BioNote*Biography Note: Hibner: "Thomas Bartlett was a new comer to Brookfield, Mass., in 1716, and had a grant of sixty acres. He was taxed on April 22, 1717, œ1-4s-6d, for the pay of the Minister and the meetinghouse and necessary charges. On Dec. 5, 1748, he was one of the signers of a petition in which the signers 'agree to go off as a distinct Precinct' and have agreed to build a Meeting-house upon the road Northeast from Mr. Jabez Ayres' between the brook and Mr. Daniel Potter's. In 1753, the name of Thomas Bartlett appears upon a list of those who purchased pews in the church. On May 21, 1750, at an organization meeting of the church, he had been elected Precinct Treasurer. It appears that he had a saw and grist mill on Five-mile River. In 1744, he conveyed land, 'excepting a saw mill', to his son Joseph Bartlett; this was sold by Joseph in 1752 to Joseph Hatfield of Sturbridge, 'excepting the Saw mill of Joseph Bartlett.9'"
Marriage*He married Mary Bartlett, daughter of Benjamin Bartlett and Mary Clesson, on 12 March 1719 in Brookfield, (now Worcester Co.), Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.10,11,12,13
Estate-Will*Thomas Bartlett left a will dated 20 June 1770 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England, naming son Obediah as an heir and sole executor. Others mentioned in the will were his wife Mary, sons Joseph, Aaron, Moses, Elijah, Matthew, Ebenezer and Adoniram, grandsons Thomas Bartlett, John and Aaron Gould, and daughters Miriam, Mary and Lydia. His deceaseed daugher Hannah is also mentioned.14
Death*Thomas died on 7 December 1774 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England, at age 77.11,13,8
Burial*He was buried at Cotter Cemetery in North Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides headstone photo and link to son Elijah (1725-1788).8
ResearchNote*Research Note of 4 August 2011 re Conway records. Pease, Lee, and etc. claim that Thomas is son of Richard, grandson of Richard, gr-grandson of Richard, and that one of these Richards came to America in 1634 with two brothers, John and Thomas. Also that he was born Newbury, not Newton, on 14 July 1695.
Perley contradicts this claim. He says Thomas, son of Richard, born Newbury 14 July 1695, cordwainer, m. Hannah Moody 18 Nov 1718, died 1771, leaving will dated 27 Feb 1767, proved 28 May 1771, listing children as Cutting (1719-?), Abigail (1721-aft 1767), and Edmund (1723-?). This is clearly not our Thomas.15,13

ResearchNoteResearch Note of 31 January 2025 re Smith tree at FS. The Smith Family Tree at FamilySearch, owner Rachelanne Smith, URL https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/11046943/person/132573147718/facts?_phsrc=Bdv4619&_phstart=successSource, entry for Thomas Bartlett, makes the following claims:
Thomas was the son of Ebenezer Robert Bartlett (1663-1718) and Sarah Cooke (1670-1745). The link to 8 sources doesn't work and I suspect there's no real evidence for this claim.
Thomas m1 Hannah Moody in 1712, then m2 Abigail Finney in 1717. The source links to these two marriages don't work either. I find a marriage between a Thomas Bartlett & Hannah Moody in the FS dB Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001, on Sep 1718 in Essex Co. It seems patently obvious this is not our Thomas.

Ebenezer Bartlett1,2

M, #419, b. 1711, d. 2 March 1788
FatherJoseph Bartlett Jr.3,1,2 b. 5 Jan 1673, d. 21 Jun 1750
MotherHannah Lnu2,1,4 b. c 1677, d. 26 Dec 1730
Last Edited8 Jan 2025
Birth*Ebenezer, son of Joseph Bartlett Jr. and Hannah Lnu, was born in 1711 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Town & Vital and Vital Records both list him after brother Joseph but with no birth date. Savage lists Ebenezer as 'perhaps'. Find A Grave's year is 1705 but the headstone doesn't support this, or any other date for that matter.5,6,7,8
Marriage*His first marriage was to Ann Clark on 24 June 1736 at Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Hibner concurs with list of children, except puts second Enoch as son of Anna Ball, not Ann Clark.9,10,11
Marriage*His second marriage was to Anna Ball on 29 August 1745 at Boston, Suffolk Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Ann's father John Ball mentioned his daughter Anna, wife of Eben Bartlett, in his will of 9 Jan 1756.9,12
Occupation*Ebenezer was a constable in 1757 at Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.4
OccupationEbenezer was a surveyor of highways in 1767 at Newton, Middlesex Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.4
Milit-Service*Ebenezer Bartlett served with the Massachusetts Volunteers during the American Revolutionary War circa 1776. His headstone reads, "Ebenezer Bartlett, Mass. Vols., Rev. War". Hibner makes no mention of any military service.
MA Soldiers & Sailors lists three Ebenezer Bartletts on p. 726. Their entries read,
     1. List of men drafted from Capt. Gores, Capt. Mayo's, Capt White's and Capt. May's cos. to serve at Nantasket under Lieut. James Morton in June, 1776, driving ships from Boston harbor; reported employed with a team.
     2. Brookfield. Private, Capt. Asa Danforth's co. of volunteers, Col. Convers regt; pay abstract for 22 days service; marched from Brookfield Sept. 23, 1777, to join Gen. Gate's army.
     3. Blandford. Private, Capt. Job Summer's co., Col. John Greaton's (3rd) regt; muster roll for Oct., 1780; enlisted July 12, 1780; enlistment, 6 months; reported a collier.
I doubt he is no. 3 due to his age (ca. 76 yo in 1776), none of his life events took place in Blanford and his occupations were constable and surveyor, not collier (coal miner).
I doubt he is no. 2 due again to his age. He was from Newton, not Brookfield, which is about 55 miles distant. No. 2 is Ebenezer's nephew Ebenezer Bartlett (1733-1805), son of Thomas & Mary Bartlett.
No. 3 is the only remaining choice. This seems plausible. Or perhaps he was none of these three.13,14,15
Death*Ebenezer died on 2 March 1788 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.8,16,4
Burial*He has a cenotaph at Cotter Cemetery in North Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. His actual burial location claimed to be in Newton.8
