John Keen Blair1,2,3
M, #708, b. 21 January 1854, d. 13 April 1925
Birth* | John, son of Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, was born on 21 January 1854 in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Find A Grave, presumably based on headstone, shows 20 Jun 1847. See ResearchNote.5,1,3,6 |
Census1860 | John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sherman P.O., Grayson Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, as 6 yo son John K Blair.7 |
Move | Daniel, Mary, John, Charles, Thomas and Jessie joined the move of their parents from Grayson County to Bonham, Fannin County in 1864.2 |
Census1870 | John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, as 15 yo John K Blair.8 |
Marriage* | He married Emma Atkinson on 24 March 1880 in Walker Co., Texas. Emma's parents are shown but unfortunately not John's.9,1,2 |
Census1880* | John and Emma appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Walker Co., Texas, as 26 yo son-in-law J K & 19 yo Emma Blair in the household of Emma's parents S L & Neoma (Naomi?) Atkinson.10 |
Census1900 | John and Emma appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Grandview, Johnson Co., Texas, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 46 yo farmer J K & 39 yo wife E Blair. Their children William Everett and Anna Ethel were listed as living with them.11 |
Census1910 | John and Emma appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 8, Montgomery Co., Texas, enumerated 7 May 1910, as 55 yo saw mill laborer J K & 48 yo wife Emma Blair. Their children William Everett and Anna Ethel were listed as living with them.12 |
Census1920 | John and Emma appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 8, Montgomery Co., Texas, enumerated 3 February 1920, as 65 yo saw mill laborer John K & 59 yo wife Emma Blair. Their son William Everett was listed as living with them.13 |
Death* | John died on 13 April 1925 in Montgomery Co., Texas, at age 71.14 |
Burial* | He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Conroe, Montgomery Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.6 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 30 July 2018 re Find A Grave. John's Find A Grave entry is puzzling. The memorial and headstone show 20 Jun 1847 as birthdate. Yet we have primary evidence and censuses from 1860 through 1920 confirming the year 1854 ±1. Did someone give bad info to the stone carver? There's an Emma Atkinson Blair buried in the same cemetery with same type stone & font, so I've no doubt this is the correct couple. The cemetery is in Montgomery Co., TX and we have three censuses in a row when the couple is living there.6 |

Charles Edward Blair1,2,3
M, #709, b. March 1856, d. 28 March 1929
Birth* | Charles, son of Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, was born in March 1856 in Virginia. Censuses support ca. year and state.4,5,2,3 |
Census1860 | Charles appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sherman P.O., Grayson Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, as 4 yo son Cha E Blair.6 |
Move | Daniel, Mary, John, Charles, Thomas and Jessie joined the move of their parents from Grayson County to Bonham, Fannin County in 1864.1 |
Census1870 | Charles appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Judge James Keen Blair and Lucy Barksdale Ragsdale, as 14 yo Charles E Blair.7 |
Census1880* | Charles appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Pct. 2, Palo Pinto Co., Texas, as 24 yo boarder Charles E Blair in the household of Charles W Slack. Blair is a farm laborer, born VA, both parents born VA. This seems a very good fit.8 |
Marriage* | He married Laura L. McFarland on 14 February 1883 in Wichita Co., Texas. The 1910 census confirms married 26 years with 2 born and 2 living.9,3,1,2 |
Move* | Charles and Laura moved their residence from Texas to Seattle from 14 February 1883 to 25 April 1910.3,10 |
Census1910 | Charles and Laura appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Seattle, King Co., Washington, at 4040 37th Ave S, enumerated 25 April 1910, as 59 yo house carpenter Charles E & 47 yo wife Laura Blair. Their children Thomas Wagner and Jesse Allwyn were listed as living with them.10 |
Census1920 | Charles and Laura appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Seattle, King Co., Washington, at 7623 8th Ave NW, enumerated 2 January 1920, as 63 yo C E & 58 yo wife Laura Blair. Their children Thomas Wagner and Jesse Allwyn were listed as living with them. The enumeration correctly shows Charles and both parents born in Virginia.11 |
Occupation* | Charles was a watchman at Seattle Cedar before his death in 1929. This is plausible as Seattle Cedar was on the south side of the ship canal about 3.3 miles from his home on 8th NW.12 |
Death* | Charles died on 28 March 1929 in Seattle, King Co., Washington, of cardio renal disease. This death certificate has two major errors concerning his parents. It shows Charles' father as Daniel Blair, born Ireland and his mother as 'unknown' born Ireland. The informant, J A Blair, is presumably their son Jesse Allwyn Blair. It correctly shows Charles as a widower.12 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 9 July 2021 re Find A Grave. In 2018 Find A Grave had memorials for a Charles Edward Blair (1856-1941, no. 122769966) and Laura M Blair (1865-1951, no. 122770139), buried at East Lawn Cemetery, Augusta, Eau Claire, WI. Same stone materials, same font, though they're not shown as married. There are three other Blairs in this cemetery - Hiram (1830-1883) who has a different style headstone, Harry F (1885-1907) and Pearl Blair (1886-1889). A group photo shows Harry & Pearl's headstones between Charles' and Laura's. The lifespans and headstone placements suggest that Harry & Pearl might be children of Charles & Larua. No idea who Hiram might be. Hiram, Harry and Pearl are not names we see in our Blair families. The Find A Grave memorial links James Keen & Lucy Ragsdale Blair as Charle's parents. Wrong, wrong, wrong. This is a different couple. Our Charles died in 1929 in Seattle, Laura in 1925 in Seattle. F C Hodge in A History of Fannin County (1966) states in the Blair section on p. 152, "Charles E. (b. 1856), who was married to Laura McFarland and moved to Seattle, Wash". While not always reliable I'm inclined to believe Hodge as she wrote it before the internet flooded us with garbage genealogy. In Washington, U.S., Select Death Certificates, 1907-1960 there's a record for Laura L Blair [McFarland, d/o Samuel McFarland & Fnu Kerr], died 1925 in Seattle. The McFarland surname suggests we're on the right track. There's another record in Washington Death Certificates for Charles E Blair who died in Seattle in 1929 whose father was Daniel Blair. Charles had a brother Daniel but his father was James Keen Blair.A simple mistake or is this the wrong Charles? In the 1910 & 1920 censuses we find a Charles & Laura Blair in Seattle. By July 2021 Laura's name on her Find A Grave memorial has changed to Laura May Horel Blair. No explanation why the change was made.13 |

The birthyear of 1875 is correct. I'm still iffy about whether William's name is really Warren. And Bennett might be Emmet. This needs more work.8 |
Census1910* | William and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Lawton Twp., Comanche Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 9 April 1910, as 62 yo Indian store merchant William B & 57 yo wife Mary E Blair. Their daughter Jessie Mae was listed as living with them, as well as 24 yo boarder LeRoy Lawson.9 |

Marriage* | Her second marriage was to William L. "Willie" Holmes on 9 November 1881 at Orange Co., Texas. Julia shows 4 born & 3 living in the 1900 census. One of the two currently for whom I have no name may be Amelia Holmes (1887-unk). FSTrees says she d 1945 but that seems to conflict w/ census record when she is missing in the 1900 census and would have been only 13 yo.1,6 |

Death* | Emma died on 26 January 1932 at age 71.1 |
Burial* | She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Conroe, Montgomery Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1 |
The cemetery is in Montgomery Co., TX and we have three censuses in a row when the couple is living there.11 |
