"Willie" Reynolds (1860-1887). Willie lived with his grandparents in the 1860 & 1880 censuses, but also enumerated with his parents in the 1860.
Devin Family claims date of 07 Jan 1858 w/o citation. I'm going with "Virginia, Bureau of Vital Statistics, County Marriage Registers, 1853-1935" database.6,7
Census1860*John and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Berger's Store PO, Northern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 29 August 1860, as 21 yo farmer John S & 16 yo Mary E Reynolds. Milit-Service*2LT John S. Reynolds served as 2nd Lieutenant with Company E, 57th Virginia Infantry (Ramsey's regiment) NPS provides following overview of the Regiment's history,
57th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by adding five independent companies to the five companies of E.F. Keen's Battalion. Some of the men were from Powhatan, Pittsylvania, and Botetourt counties. The unit was assigned to General Armistead's, Barton's, and Steuart's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It participated in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Gettysburg, served in North Carolina, then saw action at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. The 57th continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches north of the James River and around Appomattox. It reported 113 casualties at Malvern Hill and lost more than sixty percent of the 476 engaged at Gettysburg. There were 7 killed, 31 wounded, and 3 missing at Drewry's Bluff, and many were disabled at Sayler's Creek. On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered 7 officers and 74 men. Its commanders were Colonels Lewis A. Armistead, George W. Carr, David Dyer, Clement R. Fontaine, Elisha F. Keen, and John B. Magruder; Lieutenant Colonels Waddy T. James, William H. Ramsey, and Benjamin H. Wade; and Majors Garland B. Hanes, David P. Heckman, and Andrew J. Smith. between 1861 and 1864.9,10,1,11
Marriage*His second marriage was to Alice S. Holt on 21 January 1864 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. My preliminary research suggests their only child was John Sydney Reynolds (c1863-a1923, m. Mary Olivia (1865-1915); res. Baltimore 1922). John lived with his grandparents in the 1880 census.
Alice's application for Civil War pension shows their marriage dated 13 Jan 1864 in Pittsylvania by Mordecai Hogwood.

ResearchNote*Research Note of 9 December 2021 re unsubstantiated claims. Find A Grave, Ancestry's Public Member Trees and FSTrees (entry LCJJ-NW3 for William Harrison Reynolds) make a number of claims about William but the evidence is sketchy. Following are some of these claims and my concerns.
FSTrees (ID no. LCJJ-NW3) claims he married Myra Ann Belknap 24 Aug 1856 without citation. In the 1860 census William is living with his parents and the married box is not checked.
There's a Civil War pension app for a Myra A Reynolds based on the service of William H Reynolds of Co. K, 169th PA Infantry. Find A Grave claims he was with Co. C, 46th VA Infantry. The NPS database lists four soldiers named William H Reynolds in Virginia infantry regiments, the 22nd, 44th, 46th and 50th. None of the four regimental histories says it was formed from Pittsylvania men.1

Birth*Barton, son of William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, was born on 10 May 1842 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.1,2
Census1850Barton appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Henry Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, as 7 yo Benton Reynolds.3

Milit-Service*Barton Thomas Reynolds served as a Private with Co. E, 57th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, CSA during the Civil War between 1861 and 1865.
Devin Timber writes, Barton and John joined the Confederate Army on the same day, 29 jun 1861, at Rorrers Va. (Mt. Rogers). Barton was assigned as a private to company E. 57th regiment, Virginia Infantry. He was wounded on 29 aug 1863 at Manassas. On 13 may 1864 he was admitted to the Wayside General Hospital #9 at Richmond. He was to return to duty on 4 jun 1864 but instead he was sent to Chimborazo Hospital #5 and on 19 jun 1864 he was sent home for 60 days with a fractured right forearm. On 10 sep 1864 he was listed as being wounded again and on 25 sep. he was again sent to Chimborazo Hospital #5. His regiment was listed as being at Farmville Va. on 8 apr 1865 and he was mustered out on 9 apr 1865. FatherWilliam Garrett Reynolds4 b. 1 Apr 1811, d. 23 Jan 1868
MotherElizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair4 b. 25 Jan 1817, d. 13 Sep 1891
Last Edited27 Apr 2024
Birth*Henry, son of William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, was born on 22 March 1846 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. His death certificate shows a birth date of 22 Mar 1847.5,6
Census1850Henry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Henry Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, as 4 yo Henry C Reynolds.7
Census1860Henry appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of North Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, as 14 yo Henry Reynolds.8
Marriage*He married Catherine Jane Pickerel on 12 January 1869 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Registration date is 21 Jan. The 12 Jan date is from Catherine's pension application. Timber claims location of Henry Co, VA. The pension app is unreadable on that line. In the 1910 census Catherine shows 9 born with 3 still living but there's good evidence that four were living in 1910. My preliminary research suggests seven of their alleged nine children were William H (1869-1954, m. Lizzie B Pruett 1894 in CO), Jno H (James T?,1872-1913), Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" (1875-1953, m. George Thomas Worley 1895 Pittsylvania), George Samuel (1879-1953, m. Inez B McMinnis 1902 Caswell, NC), Maud Anna (1881-1947, m. Silas A Saunders), Louise C "Lou" (1884- ) and Sissie Reynolds (1886-1968, m. Jabe Boulding). See ResearchNote below for discussion of this family.9,10,11,12
ResearchNote*Research Note re a challenging family. Private sources disagree on names of children. The censuses provide little clarity. There were at least two men named Henry C. Reynolds in Pittsylvania County in the time period involved, one or both of whom had the middle name Clay.
     Census sources:
1870 : we find only Henry & Jane Reynolds, no children.
1880 : we find only Henry & Catherine J, plus chldren William H, Jno H, Elizabeth, and Geo S Reynolds.
1900 : we find only Henry & Jane, plus child George.
1910 : we find only Henry C & Cathern J Reynolds, plus a 16yo granddaughter Rosa Hedrich. Here's a problem - Catherine shows 9 born with 3 still living (and no, the '3' is definitely not an '8'). The three most plausible candidates, each with a FamilySearch death record showing names of both parents, are James T (Jno H?), Maud Anna, and Sissie. Find A Grave claims Sarah and George both died after 1910 but I'm not at all convinced they've even got the correct people.
Devin Timber (my source no. 2333) lists two Henry C Reynolds:
a) Henry C Reynolds, b. 22 Mar 1846 in Pittsylvania Co., son of William G & Elizabeth Elvira Blair Reynolds, wife Catherine Jane Pickerel. Issue: Elizabeth (b. 1876) and George (b. 1882).
b) Henry Clay Reynolds, b. 20 Mar 1861 in Pittsylvania Co., son of Charles Thomas & Serepta Reynolds, no wife, no children. Wrong person.
Reynolds VA to PA (my source no. 2311) lists four Henry C Reynolds:
a) Edward Henry Clinton Reynolds, b. 1873 in Cecil Co., MD. Wrong person.
b) Henry C Reynolds, b. 1826 in Cecil Co., MD. Wrong person. Issue: William C (b.1870), James T (b. 1872), Virginia B (b. 1874), Sarah (b. 1875), Elizabeth (b. 1876), George Samuel (b. 1879), Maud Anna (b. 1880), Louise C (b. 1884), and Sissie (b. 1886).
c) Henry Clay Reynolds, b. 1846 in Pittsylvania Co. Wrong person.
d) Henry Clay Reynolds, b. 1861 in Pittsylvania Co. Wrong person.
FamilySearch shows VA death certificate records for:
1) Maud Anna Saunders (1880-1947), d/o Henry C Reynolds & Jane Pickrel;
2) James Reynolds (1873-1913), s/o Henry Reynolds & Jane Pickerel;
3) Sissie Reynolds Boulding (1886-1968), d/o Henry Clay Reynolds & Jane Pickeral. Could this be Elizabeth w/ birthyear off by 10?13

Census1870*Henry and Catherine appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 15 August 1870, as 24 yo Henry & 23 yo Jane Reynolds. No children listed in this census.14
Census1880Henry and Catherine appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of South Pigg River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 9 June 1880, as 32 yo Henry & 30 yo Cathrine Reynolds. Seven others were listed as living with them: namely, 10 yo son Wm H, 8 yo son Jno H, 9 yo son Geo S, 4 yo daughter Elizabeth, 25 yo sister Angeline Pickerel, nieces 9 yo Arabel C and 4 yo Idelta Pickerel. The fact that alleged daughters Virginia B (should be ca 6 yo, and Sarah (should be ca 5 yo) are missing is troubling.15
Census1900Henry and Catherine appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pigg River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 June 1900, as 52 yo Henry & 50 yo Jane Reynolds. Their 18 yo son George was listed as living with them.16
Census1910Henry and Catherine appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pigg River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 63 yo farmer Henry C & 62 yo wife Cathern J Reynolds. Their 16 yo granddaughter Rosa Hedrich was listed as living with them. Catherine shows 9 children born with 3 still living.17
Death*Henry died on 13 May 1917 in Pigg River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, at age 71, of mitral regurgitation. Catherine's pension app says he died of dropsy.6,2
Burial*He was buried at George Shields Burial Ground, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Unable to locate this cemetery at Find A Grave.2

Birth*Jonah, son of William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, was born on 6 April 1848. Nicknames in the sources include "FJ", "Fayette Jonas", "Fayette J" and "Fate". It's not at all clear which was his first and which his middle name.
FJ is called Corporal in his Find A Grave memorial but the headstone is so worn it's unreadable. I've found no other clear evidence indicating he served during the war. There are four men named Lafayette Reynolds in the NPS database, two from Virginia. Neither of the associated regimental histories suggests the men were from Pittsylvania County.
     Blair Line's year is 1849.1,2
Census1850Jonah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Henry Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair, as 1 yo Lafayette Reynolds.3

Birth*William, son of Berryman Arnn and Joanna Amanda Blair, was born between 1837 and 1838. Find A Grave's year is 1838. Blair Line cites U.S. 1850 census for Henry County, TN for 1837.1,3
Census1840William is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Berryman Arnn, in the 1840 Federal Census of Regiment 107, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.4
Census1850William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of 14th Civil Dist., Henry Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, Berryman Arnn and Joanna Amanda Blair, as 13 yo William Arnn.5
Death*William died in 1858. Find A Grave's date is 1958 which is obviously nonsense. I'm guessing a typo and it's 1858. I can't find him in the 1860 census.1
