Elizabeth Robertson1
F, #846, b. circa 1818
Birth* | Elizabeth was born circa 1818 in Virginia. The A Wonderful Life tree at Ancestry claims her birthdate was 10 Aug 1818 in Pittsylvania County but the citations are four censuses and another Ancestry tree none of which are both accurate and reliable. The same entry says her parents were Edward T Robertson and Nancy R Fuqua Shepherd.2,3 |
Marriage* | She married Ralph E. Blair, son of Rev. William Blair Jr. and Nancy Thomas, on 3 December 1842 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Two other daughters alleged by various sources but for whom I find no real evidence were Catherine Ann Blair (1851-1861) and Eleanor N Blair (1860- ).1 |
CensusLead | A person who might be Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 census in Ralph E. Blair's household at Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as 29 yo Elizabeth Blair.4 |
Census1860 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 28 August 1860, as 38 yo farmer Elizabeth Blair. Her children William E., Mary L., Eleanor F., Ralph S., Nancy C. and Sarah Elizabeth were listed as living with her. The 1860 didn't give marital status so it's unclear if Elizabeth is a widow, divorced, abandoned, or what.5 |
Census1870 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 14 July 1870, as 50 yo Elizabeth A Blair. Her children Mary L., Ralph S. and Sarah Elizabeth were listed as living with her.6 |
Census1880* | Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dan River Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 58 yo widow Elizabeth Blair. Her children Mary L., Ralph S. and Sarah Elizabeth were listed as living with her.3 |
Death* | Elizabeth died. Elizabeth's FSTrees entry LCJF-DLG and her Sides tree entry at Ancestry both allege 1898 without citation. |

Birth* | James was born circa 1812, date estimated.1 |
Marr-Bond* | James Slaydon and Eleanor L. Blair posted a marriage bond on 16 December 1832 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. They were married on the 19th. This couple has been a research deadend for me. Dallas claims one other son, William Bryan Sladon (1824- ) who m. Sarah Thomas. That makes no sense based on James & Elizabeth's marriage year of 1832.2,3 |

Birth* | Silvany was born on 7 February 1807. Also spelled Sylvany. The Ross/Young tree at Ancestry claims without citation that his name was Sylvanus and that his parents were Sylvanus "Silvany" Gardner Sr & Elizabeth "Eliza" W Weldon.1,3 |
Marr-Bond* | Rev. Silvany Gardner Jr. and Sarah S. Blair posted a marriage bond on 20 September 1830 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. They were married on the 23rd.3 |
Census1830 | Silvany appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 0001100001-000010001 as 20-29 yo Silvany Gardner. His wife Sarah was probably the female 20-29 yo. Best guess is that Silvany's parents were the male 70-79 and female 60-69. The ages fit. I don't know who the male 15-19 yo was. It's also unclear which Silvany Gardner was HOH - father or son?4 |
Census1850* | Silvany appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 16 December 1850, as 45 yo farmer Silvany Gardner. His children James, Mary F. and Eleanor Narcissa were listed as living with him. There's one unknown person, 80 yo Elizabeth Gardner.5 |
Census1860 | Silvany appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as 52 yo Sylvan Gardner in the household of his son-in-law & daughter Byrd Thomas Jennings and Eleanor Narcissa Gardner; as 45 yo farmer Byrd T & 22 yo Eleanor Jennings.6,7 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Elizabeth Brightwell from 10 October 1860 to 18 June 1870. Date range bracketed by the 1860 & 1870 censuses. Ancestry's Gardner and Long Tree claims 16 Oct 1861, without citation.8 |
Census1870 | Silvany and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 18 June 1870, as 65 yo farmer Silvany & 52 yo wife Elizabeth Gardner. Four yo Ellen M Gardner was living with them, relationship unknown.8 |
Death* | Silvany died in 1874. Find A Grave's date of 06 May 1856 is clearly wrong.1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Gardner, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.1 |

Joseph Blair1
M, #852, b. 1815
Birth* | Joseph, son of Samuel Brittain Blair Sr. and Mary S. "Polly" Reynolds, was born in 1815.1 |
Census1820 | Joseph is probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Samuel Brittain Blair Sr., in the 1820 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.3 |
Death* | Joseph died. Blair Line says he "died young".4 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 23 November 2021 re a puzzle. A Joseph Blair and a Ralph Blair both appear to have married Elizabeth (Lnu in the case of Joseph, Robertson in the case of Ralph). Both Joseph and Ralph appear to have died young. The 1850 census supports Joseph. He & Elizabeth are in Pittsylvania County with children William, Mary, Ellinor and Ralph. Yet there's also a marriage record for Ralph Blair & Elizabeth Robertson from 1842. Elizabeth shows up in 1860, '70, and '80 as a widow with children matching the 1850 census. So what gives? Are Joseph and Ralph the same person? Ralph's TMG ID is 838. |
