Rachael Witcher1,2,3

F, #931, b. 1768, d. after 8 December 1806
FatherMaj. William Witcher Sr.2,1,3 b. b 1739, d. 8 Jun 1808
Last Edited22 Jan 2025
Birth*Rachael, daughter of Maj. William Witcher Sr., was born in 1768.1
Marriage*She married William Morrison between 1775 and 1805 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Date and location per Swann without citation. They claim children born between 1781 and 1805 so how the year 1778 makes sense is unclear. But it's the only claim of any date I've found. Close enough for now.
Hubbard says Williams' surname was Morris, Descendants and Swann say Morrison. I've also seen Merripson.4,2,1
Estate-WillRachael was named an heir in the will of Maj. William Witcher Sr., her father, as Rachel Morrison, dated 8 December 1806 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, received land and livestock.5
Death*Rachael died after 8 December 1806, based on being an heir in her father's of this date.5

Deceased had been an invalid for many years, but bore her sufferings without murmur or complaint. Mrs. Keen was born in Lynchburg September, 1813. She was Miss Maria Eliza Hare, and was a daughter of the late Jesse Hare. Many years ago she was united in marriage with Mr. Elisha Keen, who some time past had preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Keen had been a resident of Danville since shortly before the war. She was a consistent member of Main Street M. E. church. The funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Payne yesterday afternoon at 12:15, and were conducted by Rev. W. R. Laird, pastor of First Presbyterian Church. At the conclusion of the services, the remains were conveyed to the Southern Depot and left on the 1:40 train for Lynchburg, where they will be interred this morning. Birth*Ashford, son of Capt. Elisha Keen and Elizabeth Napier, was born between 1790 and 1796 in Franklin Co., Virginia. Lowe claims 1796; Barbour 1790-95; the 1860 census has him at 70 years old.1,2,3

Census1820*Ashford appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 00001-101 as 26-44 yo Ashford Keen. Birth*Decatur was born on 29 January 1816 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Censuses both support birthyear and state.2,3,4,5,1
Marriage*He married Nancy Harriet Keen, daughter of Capt. John Keen and Nancy Witcher, on 25 January 1836 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Williams & census give the groom's name as Decatur Jones. Reed says Nancy's sister Elizabeth Ann married Decatur and that Nancy married Bartlett Jones.6,7
Census1840*Decatur appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 01002-10001 20-29 yo as Decatur Jones. There are two extra persons in this enumeration - a male 20-30 and a male 5-10. I suspect this is a widowed brother of either Decatur or Nancy and his son. Further research may resolve this.8

Their children William Henry, Maria Louisa, Elizabeth Anne "Bettie", Nancy Witcher, John Keen, Emily, Thomas Decatur, Mary Christian "Kate", Charles Bixler and D'Orsay were listed as living with them. In addition to their children we find nieces/nephews: 21 yo Adolphus, 13 up Bartlett W, and 8 yo Ann M Jones. There's an unknown 31 yo Martha E Jones, as well as two black factory hands and apparently their three children. Real estate valued at $8080, personal at $20k.10
Census1870Decatur and Nancy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 20 July 1870, as 55 yo tobacconist Decatur & 53 yo Nancy H Jones.
