He was a son of Bartlett Jones and Elizabeth Keen, being born in Pittsylvania County, January 19, 1849. His parents died when he was young and he was reared by his uncle, Col. Elisha Keen, a distinguished soldier of the Confederate Army at "Cottage Hill," a fine country estate about 12 miles from Danville. Here he grew up with his first cousins, the late Mrs. William Henry Jones, the late Mrs. C. D. Langhorne, mother of Lady Astor and Mrs. Charles Dana Gibson.
In early manhood, Mr. Jones felt the lure of the west and with the late Judge H. W. Flournoy he went to Georgia, Texas and into the Indian Territory and led the life of a cattleman, returning to Virginia in 1872.9
