Charlie Irvin Blair Sr.1,2,3
M, #5651, b. 13 April 1882, d. 20 September 1953
Birth* | Charlie, son of James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, was born on 13 April 1882 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. His name may have really been Charlie, not Charles. It's that way in all sorts of primary sources. However his marriage record to Lessie lists him as Chas.1,6,2 |
Census1900 | Charlie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Callands Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, as 18 yo son Charlie Blair.7 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Fannie L. Hudgins on 18 January 1903 at Caswell Co., North Carolina. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Louise Blair (c1905- , m. Henry Otis Winn 1921 in Danville). Louise's marriage record says she was daughter of C I & F R (not F L) Blair. Louise & Henry had at least four children, Thelma V, Lois F, Marion E (a daughter according to her headstone), and William Winn.8,9 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Lessie Ruth Clarke on 22 December 1907 at Caswell Co., North Carolina. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Charlie Irvin Blair Jr. (1910-1939, m. Evelyn Bosworth Brown 1934 in Danville). Charlie Jr's marriage record confirms he was son of C I Blair Sr & Lessie Clark. Lessie's headstone reads 'wife of Charlie I Blair Sr'.10,11,3 |
Census1910* | Charlie and Lessie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Danville, Virginia, enumerated 15 April 1910, as 28 yo grocer Charles I & 25 yo wife Lessie R Blair. Their 4 yo daughter Louise was listed as living with them, as well as Lessie's 14 yo sister Blanche L Clarke.12 |
Residence* | Charlie and Lessie resided at 680 Shelton in Danville, Virginia, on 12 September 1918. Charlie was a shipping clerk for Cobb-Crews Co.13 |
Census1920 | Charlie and Lessie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Danville, Virginia, enumerated 16 February 1920, as 37 yo wholesale shipping clerk Charles & 36 yo wife Lessie Blair. Their 16 yo daughter Louise and 10 yo son Charles Jr were listed as living with them, as well as five roomers.14 |
Residence | Charlie and Lessie resided at 245 S. Jefferson in Danville, Virginia, in 1929. Charlie was a clerk for Jas J Pritchett & Son. His son Charlie Jr. was at the same address as an employee of Southern Railroad.15 |
Census1930 | Charlie and Lessie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Danville, Virginia, enumerated 3 April 1930, as 47 yo feed store salesman Charles I & 46 yo wife Lessie R Blair. Their 19 yo son Charles I Blair was listed as living with them.16 |
Census1940 | Charlie and Lessie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Danville, Virginia, at 609 Patton St., enumerated 12 April 1940, as 47 yo wholesale food house manager Charlie I & 46 yo wife Lessie Blair. Their 4 yo granddaughter Sibyl Blair was listed as living with them. Impressive! Neither Charlie nor Lessie aged at all since the 1930 census.17 |
Residence | Charlie and Lessie resided at 240 Jefferson Ave. in Danville, Virginia, in 1942.18 |
Death* | Charlie died on 20 September 1953 at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, at age 71, of a fractured skull when 'passenger car ran off railway'.6,2 |
Burial* | He was buried on 22 September 1953 at Mountain View Cemetery in Danville, Virginia. Find A Grave provides photo of his headstone. There are quite a few known Blairs in this cemetery including Charlie's m2 Lessie, their son Charlie Jr., his sisters-in-law Edith Lockwood Blair and Elsie Martin, and others.2,3 |

Samuel Young Blair1,2
M, #5654, b. 14 May 1888, d. 27 May 1959
Birth* | Samuel, son of James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, was born on 14 May 1888 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. The 1900 says he's 11 yo but born in Jun 1879, clearly a typo. Young's death certificate, SS App, and WWII draft card all say 14 May 1889. I'm going with his WWI draft card which says 14 May 1888.5,1,6,2 |
Census1900 | Samuel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Callands Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, as 11 yo son Young Blair.2 |
Census1910 | Samuel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tunstall Magisterial Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, as 21 yo son Young Blair.7 |
Marriage* | He married Anna Meter Farmer on 12 December 1912 in Danville, Virginia.8,9,10 |
Residence* | Samuel and Anna resided at 1114 Wyllie Ave. in Danville, Virginia, on 5 June 1917. Young is a laundryman for Danville Laundry Co.5 |
Census1920* | Samuel and Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Danville Ward 3, Virginia, enumerated 10 January 1920, as 31 yo railroad car inspector Samuel Young & 27 yo wife Anna Blair.11 |
Census1930 | Samuel and Anna appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Tunstall Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 3 April 1930, as 40 yo foreman Samuel Y & 38 yo wife Anna M Blair. Anna's 30 yo sister Susie A Farmer was listed as living with them.12 |
Census1940 | Samuel and Anna appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Tunstall Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 April 1940, as 50 yo section boss (of illegible industry) Samuel Y & 48 yo clerk (again illegible industry) wife Annie Blair. Two in-laws were listed as living with them, 39 yo Susan(?) and 20 yo Everett Farmer. This enumeration takes the cake for all-time worst handwriting.13 |
Death* | Samuel died on 27 May 1959 in Danville, Virginia, at age 71. Young died at his residence, 444 Woodlawn Drive. He was an expressman for the Southern Railway.1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Virginia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1,10 |

Katherine Blanche "Kate" Blair1,2
F, #5655, b. 20 September 1891, d. 10 February 1965
Birth* | Katherine, daughter of James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, was born on 20 September 1891 in Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. A conundrum - her birth record says 20 Sep 1891, the 1900 census says Sep 1890, and her death certificate 14 Sep 1891.1,5,6 |
Census1900 | Katherine appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Callands Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of her parents, James Addison Blair and Mahalia Allowyne Elliott, as 9 yo daughter Kate Blair.6 |
