Edgar Elisha Blair1,2
M, #2814, b. 2 July 1874, d. 17 December 1949

Edgar Elisha Blair 2814
Birth* | Edgar, son of Elisha Edgar Blair and Sara Thomas "Tommie" Turner, was born on 2 July 1874 in Denison, Grayson Co., Texas.5,6 |
Census1880 | Edgar appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of 2nd Pct., Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Elisha Edgar Blair and Sara Thomas "Tommie" Turner, as 6 yo son Edie Blair.7 |
Census1900* | Edgar and Annie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 6, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 25 yo farmer Edward & 25 yo wife Annie M Blair. Their children Edna M. and Gracie were listed as living with them.8 |
ResearchNote | Research Note of 2 September 2021 re Edgar's m1: I believe he did not m1 Annie Mae Hurst as follows, 1900 census: We find a 25 yo Edward Blair in Fannin County, wife Annie M, daughters 2 yo Edna M & 0.3 yo Gracie. Edward's parents' birthstates are VA and AR, which are close but should be VA and MO. Married 3 years (i.e. ca 1897) with 2 born and 2 living. 1910 census: I find no Edward/Edgar & Annie Blair. Instead I find a 'widowed' 36 yo Annie Blair in Bryan Co, OK with daughters12 yo Edna M, 10 yo Minnie B, 8 yo Addie M, 5 yo Grace, and 1 yo Iva Blair. Edna is a good fit with the 1900 record, but Grace should be 10-11 yo, not 5 yo. Iva's age of 1 yo suggests Annie was 'widowed' ca 1909. Clearly Annie was not widowed, at least not by Edgar Elisha Blair, since he lived until 1949. That leaves two possibilities - the Edward Blair she married is not Edgar Elisha Blair or she was hiding a divorce under cover of widowhood. Edgar married Ola Matilda Edwards ca. 1907-1908 so Iva wouldn't have been his daughter. By the 1920 census Annie has married Silas Dossen/Dawson, is still living in Bryan, OK, with daughters 14 yo Grace and 11 yo Iva. In the 1930 census Annie is in Smith, TX with daughter Addie & her husband Lee Roy Ham. In the 1940 census Annie is still with Addie & Lee Roy Ham, but now in Dallas. Meanwhile Edgar & Ola have a complete census record 1910-1940. There's never a child from Edgar's purported 1st marriage living with him and Ola in later censuses. Bottom line our Edgar Elisha Blair did not marry Annie Mae Hurst. I do not yet know the identity of the Edward Blair who did marry her ca. 1897 and likely died before the 1900 census. The following sources are in error regarding this marriage according to my research and analysis: FSTrees, ID no. LQRP-6XW. Ancestry, Gayle McDowell tree. Geneanet.org, (https://gw.geneanet.org/justinlsmith?n=blair&oc=&p=edgar+elisha) shows Edgar Elisha Blair, b. 1874 in Grayson County, d. 1949 in Wichita County, TX, correct parents, wives Ola Matilda Edwards & Annie Mae Hurst, but with Ola first and Annie second.8,9 |
Marriage* | He married Ola Matilda Edwards between 1907 and 1908. Married 2 years with 1 born and 1 living in the 1910 census. A defunct Ancestry database, Web: RootsWeb Marriage Records Index", says they were married in 1907 in Roosevelt, NM. I have not found any primary source for this marriage.10,11,1 |
Census1910* | Edgar and Ola appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona, enumerated 22 April 1910, as 35 yo transfer team owner Earnest E & 24 yo wife Ola M Blair. Their son Ernest Carl "Ernie" was listed as living with them, as well as one servant.12 |
Residence* | Edgar resided in Creek Co., Oklahoma, on 12 September 1918. His WWI draft card shows his occupation as pumper for Oklahoma Pipeline Co., and nearest relative as Sarah Thomas Blair of Lamasco, TX.5 |
Census1920 | Edgar and Ola appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Wellton, Yuma Co., Arizona, enumerated 29 January 1920, as 45 yo steam railroad laborer Ernest E & 34 yo wife Ola Blair. Their children Ernest Carl "Ernie", Frank Kenneth, Ola Jane and Thomas Walton "Buck" were listed as living with them.13 |
Census1930 | Edgar and Ola appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 2, Eastland Co., Texas, enumerated 14 April 1930, as 56 yo laborer Edgar & 44 yo wife Olba M Blair. Their children Thomas Walton "Buck", Edgar Elisha "Ed" and William A. "Billie Joe" were listed as living with them.14 |
Census1940* | Edgar appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 2, Eastland Co., Texas, enumerated 8 April 1940, as 65 yo WPA road construction laborer Edgar E Blair. His son William A. "Billie Joe" was listed as living with him.15 |
Death* | Edgar died on 17 December 1949 at Wichita Falls State Hospital in Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., Texas, at age 75, of cerebral hemorrhage. Find A Grave claims he died in Ranger, Eastland, TX, but his death certificate says otherwise.16,17 |
Burial* | He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger, Eastland Co., Texas. Headstone & portrait photos available at Find A Grave. Find A Grave shows six Blairs buried in this cemetery.17 |
ResearchNote | Research Note of 1 September 2021 re given name(s). Scatterlings. Julian F "Rusty" Williams in Scatterlings: Blair, Williams & Turner To Texas 1858-1873, a generally very well researched and reliable source, names him Edgar Elisha Blair. FSTrees, ID no. LQRP-6XW, calls him Edward Elisha Blair and lists fifteen name sources. Four sources support Edward: an 1896 marriage, the 1900 census, his WWI draft card, and his Find A Grave entry. The first two are in my opinion not this man. The WWI draft card is pretty compelling and lists his mother correctly as Sarah Thomas Blair. Find A Grave's claim is worthless since his headstone just says Ed. One source supports Edgar: a 1911 birth record for daughter Ola. This one record is in three times so accounts for 1/5 of the 15 source total. Eight are inconclusive since he's recorded as E. E., Ed, or Edie. Ancestry, the Gayle McDowell tree adds a few sources for Edgar, none for Edward. Edgar is supported by the 1930 census, the 1940 census, and his SSA application. Analysis & conclusion In the absence of compelling evidence one way or the other I'm going with the most reliable source overall - Scatterlings - and listing him as Edgar Elisha Blair. But clearly he switched back and forth between Edgar and Edward seemingly at will. It's interesting that none of the primary sources mention his purported middle name of Elisha. Of course it's a well established name in the family so is fully believable. Perhaps his name was really Edgar Edward Blair with no Elisha at all. Bottom line - inconclusive.1,17 |
