Susanna Selwood1,2,3

F, #1805, b. 28 October 1791, d. 9 April 1874
Last Edited15 Oct 2022
Birth*Susanna was born on 28 October 1791 in Maryland.4,5
Marriage*She married John Downey, son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, on 7 September 1807 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. John and Susanna may have had four or more other children not included in this database. The 1820 and 1830 censuses both suggest another daughter aged close to Sarah and another son aged close to Alexander. The 1820 has one more unexplained female under 10, the 1830 has one aged 5-9. Perhaps sloppy enumeration, perhaps two different individuals. FSTrees claims a second son named Alexander, born 1835, but I don't find any evidence supporting such a claim and FSTrees, as usual, provides no source citations.6,4
Arrivals*Susanna Selwood and John Downey arrived at 'the southern part' of Dearborn Co., Ohio, in 1818, moving from Hamilton Co., Ohio. Their son Alexander Cummins arrived with them.4,7
Census1820Susanna is probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, John Downey, in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn Co., Indiana.8
Census1830Susanna is probably the female age 40 to 49 listed in the household of her husband, John Downey, in the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana.9
Census1840Susanna is probably the female age 50 to 59 listed in the household of her husband, John Downey, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.10
Census1850*Susanna and John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rising Sun, Dearborn Co., Indiana, enumerated 20 August 1850, as 63 yo shoemaker John & 58 yo Susana Downey. Their son Caleb F. was listed as living with them. Also in the home were unknown persons Hugh Love & Hugh Elliott, river pilots, and Edward Granger, a river trader.11
Census1860Susanna and John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 10 July 1860, as 73 yo retired John & 69 yo Susanna Downey.12
Census1870*Susanna appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hartford P.O., Union Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, as 78 yo Susanna Downey in the household of 19 yo Anna Downey, currently unknown, though likely a granddaughter. Susanna shows birthstate of Ohio rather than Maryland.13
Death*Susanna died on 9 April 1874 at age 82. Find A Grave claims Sarah is the daughter of John & Susanna Selwood Downey.4,14
Burial*She was buried at Union Cemetery in Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana. Eminent Men says both John and Susanna 'rest in the cemetery at Rising Sun', though Find A Grave has no memorial for Susanna.4

Birth*James, son of Elijah Clay Cravens and Esther Wilmuth Palmer, was born on 8 January 1839 in Christian Co., Kentucky.1,2
Census1840James is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Elijah Clay Cravens, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.3
Census1850James appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Elijah Clay Cravens and Esther Wilmuth Palmer, as 11 yo James Cravins.4
Census1860James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Elijah Clay Cravens and Esther Wilmuth Palmer, as 21 yo James D Cravens.5
Milit-Service*James Dryden Cravens served with the U.S. (Union) Army, Co. K, 3rd Kentucky Cavalry during the Civil War between 1862 and 1863.6,7
Marriage*He married Sarah M. West on 8 August 1865 in Christian Co., Kentucky. James' obit in Hopkinsville Kentuckian says he was married only once, to Miss West, that they had only one child, and that both mother and child died in 1869. Obit concludes 'he is survived by one brother...and a number of nephews and nieces'.8,7
ResearchNote*Research Note of between 1870 and 1910 re census issues.
1870 : I find no James & Sarah Cravens anywhere in the US. That fits with his obit stating wife and child died in 1869, though why there are no others is surprising given their names aren't exactly rare.
There's a 40 yo James Cravens in Woodford Co., KY, with 19 yo Josie, 14 yo Nannie, 12 yo Thomas, 11 yo Rebecca, 9 yo Etha, 5 yo Benells, and 4 yo Loucille Cravens (all names as indexed, not as I read them). Josie could be a wife but is certainly not mother to any of the others. James is 10 yrs too old. Woodford County is halfway across the state. The "Loucille" in the enumeration (I read it as 4 yo male Lucian) is not the same Lucian with whom James was living in 1910. Conclusion - this is a different James.
1880 : J D & Sarah N Cravens are in McDonough, IL but again he's 10 yrs too old and three of the kids (Ephraim, Benietta and Lucien) are same as in the 1870. So if it wasn't our man in '70 it's not him in '80.
1900 is a big zilch. I find nothing.
James D Cravens & Mary Catherine Blackford:
James Dawkins Cravens (1828-1901), Find A Grave memorial no. 83056894, s/o James Dawkins Cravens and Martha "Patsy" Gillespie. There are two Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 records showing this couple. First is Benalla Cravens Reans (1863-1931), w/o J H Reams, d/o James D Cravens & Mary C Blackford. Second is Lucian Woodfork Cravens (1866-1938), h/o Phoebe Halbert, s/o James D Cravens and Mary Catherine Blackford. Benalla and Lucian are certainly the Loucille & Benells of 1870, Benietta and Lucien of 1880. James' Find A Grave entry shows two children - Thomas J (1856-1934) and Lucian W (1865-1938) Cravens.
Conclusion:
The James of the 1870 & 1880 censuses m1 Mary C Blackford who was mother of Josie, Nannie, Thomas, Rebecca, Ephraim, Benietta and Lucian. She died before 1870. James then m2 Sarah N Lnu who is in the 1870 census.8,1

Census1910James appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, as 71 yo uncle James Cravens in the household of Lucian C. Cravens; as 52 yo widower Lucien Cravens.9
Death*James died on 28 June 1915 at home of Lucian C Cravens in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 76.7,10,1
Burial*He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo & death certificate available at Find A Grave.1

Rebecca Darnell1

F, #1823, b. 9 January 1828, d. 19 January 1876
Last Edited13 Dec 2024
Birth*Rebecca was born on 9 January 1828 in Sumner Co., Tennessee. FSTrees (entry for Rebecca Darnell (1827-1876), LDMW-ZCC) says 08 Jan 1827. I'm going with Find A Grave's date for now. In both the 1900 and 1910 censuses for son Lucian Rebecca's birthstate is shown as Maryland.1
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Richard H. Cravens, son of Elijah Clay Cravens and Esther Wilmuth Palmer, on 8 January 1846 at Montgomery Co., Tennessee.2
Census1850*Rebecca and Richard appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 3 September 1850, as 25 yo Richard H & 22 yo Rebecca D Cravines. Their son Lucian C. was listed as living with them.3
Census1860Rebecca appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, as 32 yo Rebecca Cravens in the household of her parents-in-law Elijah Clay Cravens and Esther Wilmuth Palmer; as 63 yo farmer Elijah C & 59 yo Esther Cravens.4
Marriage*Her second marriage was to George H. Cox on 13 September 1866 at Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky.5
Census1870*Rebecca and George appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 28 September 1870, as 30 yo George H & 41 yo Rebecca Cox. Sixteen yo John C & 12 yo Mary Cox, as well as 22 yo Lucien Cravens, son from Rebecca's m1, were listed as living with them. John & Mary are likely Rebecca's children from m1 but are listed with surname Cox, not Cravens. Their ages fit perfectly.6
Death*Rebecca died on 19 January 1876 at age 48.1
Burial*She was buried at Cravens Cemetery in Gracey, Christian Co., Kentucky. "Loving wife of R. H. Cravens and late wife of George M. Cox".1

ResearchNote*Research Note of 14 July 2019 re possible marriage. Means claims she married George W. Post without citation or any additional information. FSTrees (entry for Emma W Means (1846–Deceased), ID no. 2MGJ-Q3L) claims she married George Washington Pettypool/Pool, 29 Jan 1866 in Christian County. There is a marriage record for this marriage, though whether it's our Emma W Means is unclear.
There's a birth record for a Molly Pool in 1874 with parents George W Pool and Emma Means.
The census record is completely unsatisfactory. Nothing in 1870. In 1880 Christian County we find G W (indexed J W) & Emma Poole, both 38 yo, with kids Walter, William and George. Perhaps these are our people. After 1880 both parents have purportedly died and the census trail runs cold. None of these three kids pulls up any hits with their parents at FamilySearch.4
