Abijah Mendell1

M, #8611, b. 1 January 1798, d. 1880
Last Edited24 Apr 2024
Birth*Abijah was born on 1 January 1798 in Massachusetts, s/o Abijah Mendell & Lucy Holden.2
Marriage*He married Euridice Lamkin in 1828, date per Find A Grave. My preliminary research suggests their children were Charles W (1825-1901, m. Margaret D Piatt), Roxanna (c1828- ), Lucy Euridice (1831-1911, m. William B Lotton), Sarah (c1832- ), Eliza (c1835- ), Melissa Adelia (1839- ), Mary A (1844-1906, m. Aaron B Vanatter), Euridice (c1847- ), and Polly Mendell (c1851- ). I have complete census info on this couple.
I believe that Charles W & Margaret D Mendell's children were George Washington (1847-1928), Wesley Sanford (c1850- ), Mary W (c1854- ), Emma Mendell (c1857- ), Scott (c1861- , perhaps s/o Charles & Margaret as there are no other males in Mendell line and Scott shows up as grandson of Abijah & Euridice in 1870 & 1880), and Theron F Mendell (c1864- ). I have nearly complete census info on this couple.
My research further suggests that William B & Lucy Euridice Lotton's only child was Eliza Jane Lotton (1859-1936).
Finally, Aaron B & Mary A Vanatter's children were probably Lenna Vanatter (c1870- ), and Cora Lucretia Vanatter (1876-1963).2
Death*Abijah died in 1880 in Switzerland Co., Indiana.2
Burial*He was buried at Allensville Cemetery in Allensville, Switzerland Co., Indiana. Some bio info available at Find A Grave.2

Birth*Aaron, son of Peter Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, was born between 1836 and 1837 in Ohio.3
Census1840Aaron is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Peter Morgan, in the 1840 Federal Census of Deerfield Twp., Warren Co., Ohio.4
Census1850Aaron appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, as 13 yo Aron.3
Marriage*He married Jane Fuson on 9 March 1856 in Warren Co., Ohio.1

Their children Elizabeth and Bennett R. were listed as living with them. No explanation for why enumerator wrote Mulford rather than Morgan. For what it's worth there's a Mulford family next door, and Aaron's mother was a Mulford. Also no explanation for why HQO adds the correct surname as option.5
Milit-Service*Aaron Morgan served with the 118th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the US Civil War .6
Death*Aaron died on 9 June 1864 in Kennesaw Mountain, Cobb Co., Georgia. I'm not certain this is the same Aaron Morgan. Independent corroboration pending.7

Peter's funeral announcement in the LA Times says the body was shipped to Fresno for internment.
Of the three people on the Kansas headstone (Peter, Mary, and Hattie) Peter died last. My guess is the headstone was erected ca 1879 when Hattied died, Mary's death info was carved in 1890 when she died, and Peter's was added in 1924 when he died even though he's not buried there. The words 'Fresno Calif' are carved below Peter's death date. Whether that means he died in Fresno or is buried in Fresno or both is unclear.4,20,18

Birth*Rebecca, daughter of Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, was born on 2 September 1847 in Ohio.1,4
Census1850Rebecca appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, as 4 yo Rebecca Jane.3

Marriage*She married Warren C. Robinson on 15 May 1873 in Harvey Co., Kansas. This certainly appears to be their marriage record. Their age difference matches the censuses well. Jane's headstone reads, 'Rebecca J, wife of WC Robinson'. No explanation for why they show up as husband & wife in the 1870 census, three years prior to this alleged marriage. My preliminary research suggests their children were Hannah H (c1879- ), and William Manfort Robinson (c1881- ).7,1
Census1880*Rebecca and Warren appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Grant Twp., Sedgwick Co., Kansas, enumerated 1 June 1880, as 31 yo wagon maker Warren & 27 yo wife Rebecca Robison. Their 1 yo daughter Hannah Robison was listed as living with them.8

Birth*Marilla, daughter of Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, was born circa 6 June 1850 in Ohio. Her headstone says 1851-1922. Find A Grave says 06 June 1851. The year 1851 just doesn't work considering she shows in the 1850 census as 6 months old.
Her death certificate says 06 Jun 1857 but that clearly makes no sense.2,4
Census1850Marilla appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, as 6/12 yo Marilla.3
Census1860Marilla appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Arthur Monfort Morgan and Rebecca K. Mulford, as 10 yo Marilla.5
Marriage*She married Michael Ragan on 27 December 1866 in Shelby Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were John M (1867-1944), Ida (1871-1895, m. Leslie Langley), and Maud Charlotte Ragan (1875-1934).
Marilla shows 11 born with 2 living in the 1910 census. No clue as to any of the missing 8 children.1,6,7
Census1870*Marilla and Michael appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Champaign Co., Ohio, enumerated 12 August 1870, as 22 yo blacksmith Michael & 20 yo Marilla Ragan. Their 2 yo son John Ragan was listed as living with them.8
Census1880*Marilla appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Sedgwick, Harvey Co., Kansas, enumerated 1 June 1880, as 29 yo housekeeper Marialla Ragan. Her children 12 yo John M, 8 yo Ida, and 6 yo Maud Ragan were listed as living with her. Marilla has the same family & dwelling numbers as the family enumerated above, A E & Minerva Kendrick, no known relationship.9
Census1910Marilla appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Sedgwick, Harvey Co., Kansas, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 58 yo widow Marilla Ragan.10
Death*Marilla died on 1 May 1922 at Los Angeles County Hospital in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, of gangrene right foot due to diabetes.11,2
Burial*She was buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave. There are four other Ragans in this cemetery all currently unknown.2
