Edward Palmer1,2

M, #2718, b. circa 1605, d. before 26 April 1684
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Edward was born circa 1605 in England, "probably between 1600 and 1610".3
Arrivals*Edward Palmer arrived at Charles River, Yorkshire, Virginia Colony, New England, circa July 1629, aboard the Friendship with Capt. John Harvey. Edward was indentured to Adam Thoroughgood who sponsored and brought him to Virginia. If data is correct that he married and had at least his first child in England, then this was not his final immigration date.2,4,1
Marriage*He married Mary Lnu circa 1634 in England.2
Immigration*Edward Palmer and Mary Lnu immigrated before 4 June 1638 to Charles River, Yorkshire, Virginia Colony, New England, aboard the Friendship. Their son Richard immigrated with them, Edward was an indentured passenger. He was granted 400 acres at Puscataway Neck this date for transporting eight persons to Virginia, among them Mary, his wife, and their son Richard. Richard appears as a head right in this patent.2,5
LandGrant*Edward was issued a 400 acre land grant on 4 June 1638 at Piscataway Neck, Fort Hunt, Fairfax Co., Virginia Colony, New England. The entry in Bostick reads, It seems that Edward cleared his obligation with Adam Thoroughgood by 1635 and it is not known if he went back to England or not but, on June 4, 1638, in return for transporting eight persons to Virignia, he was granted 400 acres Potomac Freshes, up a creek between the lands of one Capt. Brent and Henry Vincent, at a place called Puscataway Neck.6,4
BioNote*Biography Note: Palmer in Early Palmers of Virginia writes, Descendants of these three sons continured to reside in York Co. for several generations, while others of this family moved to the upper and western parts of Virginia and into North Carolina.4
Residence*Edward resided in York Co., Virginia Colony, New England, in March 1660. Edward was a member of a Coroner's Jury this date.7
Death*Edward died before 26 April 1684 in York Co., Virginia Colony, New England. Palmer says that after settling in York County Edward apparently lived the remainder of his life there; his son Richard was granted acreage formerly patented to his father, deceased, this date.2,1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 7 May 2019 re Edward's ancestors. The entire Palmer line from Edward (2725) to Capt. Richard (2735) is sketchy. Pay close attention to the citations. If the only citation is to FSTrees then take everything with a big grain of salt. By the 4th generation (Edward John Palmer & Esther Marron/Marrow) we're starting to see some primary sources. Bostick's Family History Book for Christian County, Kentucky is in my opinion the best source for early Palmer families.2

Marriage*She married Thomas Palmer, son of Edward Palmer and Mary Lnu, before 1664. Marriage date assumed prior to birth of first child.1,3
Death*Ann died circa 1716 in York Co., Virginia Colony, New England. Bostick's typo reads, "Ann died in 1617 and Thomas had died a short time before"; since Thomas died in 1716 the intent is fairly clear.1

Birth*Richard, son of Edward Palmer and Elizabeth Lnu, was born between 1706 and 1710 in York Co., Virginia Colony, New England.2,1
Estate-WillRichard was mentioned in the will of Edward Palmer, his father, dated 30 November 1715 at Yorkhamton Parish, York Co., Virginia Colony, New England.3,4
Estate-WillRichard was mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Lnu, his mother, dated 8 February 1716/17 at Yorkhamton Parish, York Co., Virginia Colony, New England.3,1
GuardianshipRichard was appointed ward of his uncle William Palmer on 15 December 1717; appointed.1
Marriage*He married Mary Lnu circa 1729. Richard married in his mid-20s.1,2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 9 May 2019 re Richard's m1. Mary or Grissell Henderson or both or neither? Bostick, who doesn't cite sources but does give enough info to track many of them down, says 'Mary ?'. It's unclear whether the 'space ?' means surname unknown or firstname uncertain. Mary Lnu seems most likely to me.
FSTrees (entry for Grissel Henderson (1719–1764), KJPF-8QC) claims his wife was Grissell Henderson but provides no source references. The name Grissell is plausible since she had a daughter of that name.
Until primary, or at least more reliable, sources emerge I'm going with Mary Grissell Henderson and the dates provided by Trees. One complication is that Bostick says Richard's son Edward m1 Grissel ?, then m2 Esther Marron(w). Odd that the daughter Grissel shows up one generation before the wife. It's possible if there are other Grissels in the family in or before Richard's generation.5

MoveRichard and Mary moved their residence from York County to Hanover County before 19 March 1736. Richard, now of Hanover Co., deeded property in York Co. to Francis Moss this date.2
Move*Richard and Mary moved their residence from Hanover County to Lunenburg County before 7 July 1746.2
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 7 May 2019. See Edward Palmer (c1605-b1684).1
Occupation*Richard was appointed Road Surveyor in May 1760 at Lunenburg Co., Virginia Colony, New England. What's with the title 'Captain'? Bostick writes, Richard Palmer was known as Capt. Richard Palmer and is so indicated in the deeds and documents of Lunenburg County and he was very active as road surveyor of the county and the building of the county. Some of the roads which he surveyed are used today. From this it's unclear whether his Captain's title resulted from military service or if it was strictly an honorific.2,5
Death*Richard died before September 1761.2
Estate-AdminHis administration of estate began in September 1761 at Lunenburg Co., Virginia Colony, New England.2
