Marriage*She married Samuel Columbus Douglass circa December 1909. My preliminary research suggests their children were
William Edward (1910-1984), Victor Hearon (1911-2009, m. Elizabeth Wayman Robinson 1937), Roberta Barbara (1913-2009, m. Clarence Stanley Ten Eyke 1936), Virginia (1916-1990, m. Phebe Mulford1

F, #1437, b. from 1781 to 1790, d. from 1 June 1840 to 23 December 1841
Last Edited27 Jan 2025
Birth*Phebe was born from 1781 to 1790. The 1830 and 1840 censuses agree on a date range of 1781 to 1790. Sheffield claims a plausible date of 16 Apr 1787 in New Jersey. Find A Grave's date of Aug 1757 is nonsense.2,3
Marriage*She married Richard B. Downey, son of James Downey Sr. and Mary Seborn, on 17 November 1809 in Hamilton Co., Ohio.1
MovePhebe and Richard moved their residence from Ohio to Rising Sun, Ohio Co., Indiana in 1818.4
Census1820Phebe is probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Richard B. Downey, in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.5
Census1830Phebe is probably the female age 40 to 49 listed in the household of her husband, Richard B. Downey, in the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, two.2
Census1840Phebe is probably the female age 50 to 59 listed in the household of her husband, Richard B. Downey, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.3
Death*Phebe died from 1 June 1840 to 23 December 1841. Death date range calculated from birth range plus "54y 17d" is 1835 to 1844. Phebe was around in the 1840 census, so say 1840-1844. Richard m2 Sarah Dennis 23 Dec 1841 and it's a near certainty he didn't divorce Phebe so final death date range is bracketed by the 1840 census and Richard's m2.
Find A Grave's death date of Aug 1811 makes no sense. Likely a typo or misread for 1841.6,7
Burial*She was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana.6,7

Birth*John, son of Richard B. Downey and Phebe Mulford, was born on 1 March 1813 at near Turkey Bottom in on the Little Miama, Hamilton Co., Ohio. Thomas's info is from John's obit, citing only 'public domain', but it's not available at Newspapers as of Oct 2022.1,3
Census1820John is probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Richard B. Downey, in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.4
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah Gibson on 4 February 1830 at Dearborn Co., Indiana. License date was 04 January. Thomas claims marriage date was 04 Feb 1839. He also claims thirteen children from this marriage though the census record only supports six..5,3
Census1830John is probably the male age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Richard B. Downey, in the 1830 Federal Census of Union Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana.6
Census1840John appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn Co., Indiana, with a household listed as 11001-10001 as 20-29 yo John Downey. His wife Sarah and children Richard, Lavina and Amos were living with him. The 1840 census started on 1 June but extended for 18 months. Since Amos appears to be the son <5 and we believe he was born 10 Oct I feel this enumeration probably took place between October '40 and October '41.7
Census1850John and Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, enumerated 11 September 1850, as 37 yo farmer John & 37 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Richard, Lovina, Amos, Simon, Sarah J. and Rachel were listed as living with them.8
Census1860*John and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, enumerated 28 July 1860, as 47 yo farmer John & 47 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Simon, Sarah J. and Rachel were listed as living with them. Household also included a domestic Margaret J. Graver (or Traver.)9
MoveJohn and Sarah moved their residence from Ripley Co., Indiana to Big Spring Twp., Shelby Co., Illinois in 1862.3
Census1870John and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Big Springs, Shelby Co., Illinois, enumerated 24 June 1870, as 57 yo farmer John & 57 yo Sarah Downey. Their 10 yo grandson Stephen B. Downey, son of Amos & Elizabeth was living with them.10
Marriage*His second marriage was to Sarah Ann Davis circa May 1880. John's m1 Sarah Gibson died 4 Mar 1880. His wife's name is again Sarah in the 1880 census of 01 June. Conclusion he marriaed Sarah Ann Davis Young sometime between 4 March and 1 June 1880. Find A Grave reports only 1880. Sarah had previously m1 Abraham D. Allen (1813- 1867) April 24, 1851 in Vigo County, IN. She m2 James Davidson Young (1815-1877) January 6, 1871 in Vigo County, IN. John Downey was her m3.11
Census1880John and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Big Spring Twp., Shelby Co., Illinois, enumerated 1 June 1880, as 67 yo John & 66 yo Sarah Downey. Their daughter Rachel was listed as living with them, as well as Rachel's husband George and two daughters, Luella and Angeline. Son Richard and his family live next door above. Sarah's age is off by about 20 years.12
Death*John died on 7 January 1900 in Sigel, Shelby Co., Illinois, at age 86.1
Burial*He was buried at Downey Cemetery in Trowbridge, Shelby Co., Illinois. Joint headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 22 October 2022 re Sheffield's claims. Sandra says that John was the son of Richard B Downey (my ID 206) and Phebe Mulford (my ID 1437). I took this information uncritically for years and entered John & Phebe's descendants into my dB. I'm now skeptical. I find no evidence online and have not been to Indiana to do in-person research. I left John, his wives and descendants in the dB but deleted the relationship between John Downey and his purported parents Richard B Downey & Phebe Mulford.

Birth*Sarah was born on 11 March 1813 in Ohio. Sheffield says 11 April. It depends on how you read the 'days' on her headstone. It reads '66Y 11M 2?'. If the days value is in the 20s then Sheffield is more likely correct.2
Marriage*She married John Downey, son of Richard B. Downey and Phebe Mulford, on 4 February 1830 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. License date was 04 January. Thomas claims marriage date was 04 Feb 1839. He also claims thirteen children from this marriage though the census record only supports six..1,3

Birth*Amos, son of John Downey and Sarah Gibson, was born on 1 October 1840 at Ripley PO in Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana. His obit says 01 Oct 1841 but he's in the 1840 census so I'm taking the day and month and going with 1840 for year. Sheffield claims 10 Oct 1840 in Cass Twp, Dearborn, IN.3,4,5
Census1840Amos is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Downey, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn Co., Indiana.6
Census1850Amos appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, John Downey and Sarah Gibson, as 10 yo Amos Downey.2
Marriage*His first marriage was to Elizabeth Bruce on 29 June 1859 at Holton, Ripley Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Otis Marion Downey (1885-1973), Josephine Downey (1887-1969), Ora B. Downey (1888- ), Laura/Luna May Downey (1889- ), and Lena M. Downey (1889- ).7,8
Marriage*His second marriage was to Anna Lucretia Barnes circa 1861 at Neoga, Cumberland Co., Illinois. Sheffield claims 30 Jun 1863 in Cumberland Co., IL, without citation. I've been unable to find supporting evidence. Date listed here is from the 1900 census in which they'd been married 39 years.5
Census1870*Amos and Anna appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Neoga, Cumberland Co., Illinois, enumerated 10 June 1870, as 29 yo Amos & 26 yo Annie Downey. Their children George and Asachasach Louisa were listed as living with them.9
Census1880Amos and Anna appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Neoga, Cumberland Co., Illinois, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 39 yo carpenter Amos & 33 yo Anna Downey. Their children Stephen Bruce, George, Asachasach Louisa, Minnie Alice and James were listed as living with them.10
Census1900Amos and Anna appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Kingman, Kingman Co., Kansas, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 59 yo Amos & 53 yo Annie L Downey. They're enumerated as married 39 years with 4 born and 4 living. No children in the household.5
Marriage*His third marriage was to Mary Ann Keller circa 1909. Married 1 year in the 1910 census. Called 'wife of Amos Downey' in her Find A Grave memorial. Her obit says she m1 Joseph Young and that they lived in Neoga. He died ca. 1884. She later married Richard Downey, then Amos Downey. No surviving children.11,12,13
Census1910*Amos and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Neoga, Cumberland Co., Illinois, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 69 yo Amos & 71 yo Mary Downey.13
Death*Amos died on 22 September 1918 in Wellington, Sumner Co., Kansas, at age 77.4
Burial*He was buried at Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad, Las Animas Co., Colorado. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.14
