surname Vandegrift1

?, #2975
Last Edited3 Nov 2022
NoteGer van der Most writes, The Dutch words grift, greft and graft are derived from the ver 'graven', meaning 'to dig'. You find the same verbal root in the English word (digged)' grave (Dutch: 'graf').
Grift and Greft are local, dialectical variations on the same root.
The meaning of the Dutch word 'grift' is 'constructed (digged) waterway, a canal'. As such it is synonious with the words 'greft' and 'graft' (nowaday written as 'gracht').
We also have a (rather obsolete) but related work '(in)griffen', which just as 'graven' means 'to engrave', 'making an imprint', 'making an indentation (in the surface of the soil = a canal; a 'griffel' is an old fashioned writing material, a slate-pencil, which a century ago was used by schoolchildren for writing on (engraving) a slate...
People living near those grifts, grefts and grafts might start calling themselves (or might be called by their neighbors(, John 'from the Grift/Greft/Graft', to discern them(selves) from other Johns. So, in HOlland we have several (unrelated) families Van de(r) Grift, Van de(r) Greft and Van de(r) Graft...2

Note*Bergen writes, "the surname being probably derived from the river Grift in Gelderland". Hannivoort writes, "'de Grift' is not a canal but a small river or brook, indeed running through Apeldoorn."1,3
NoteVandegrift - Dutch grifte ‘man-made channel’.
variant of Vandergrift. Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press.4
NoteSome of the descendants of William Henry "Harry" Vandegrift (ID# 4106) spell the surname "Van Degrift" or Van De Grift" which is used for those family members.5

MotherSarah Janvier5,1,4 b. 25 Oct 1789, d. 15 Dec 1871
Last Edited13 Dec 2024
Birth*Rebecca, daughter of Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift and Sarah Janvier, was born on 3 February 1826 in Delaware. The 1850 census suggests more like 1830.6,7,1
Census1840Rebecca is probably the female age 10 to 14 listed in the household of her father, Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift, in the 1840 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.8
Census1850Rebecca appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of her parents, Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift and Sarah Janvier, as 20 yo Rebecca Vandegrift.1
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Christopher Vandegrift, son of Christopher Vandegrift and Lydia Aspril, on 9 October 1851 at McDonough, New Castle Co., Delaware. There are a couple of Ancestry dB entries claiming 23 Mar 1852 but both cite a letter from a preacher listing the marriages he had performed 'during the year'. It's unclear whether he meant the year 1852 or the year ending 23 Mar 1852. I'm sticking with S. Vandegrift's date of 09 Oct 1851. Ive never found her to be in error.9,10
Census1860*Rebecca and Christopher appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Middletown, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 23 July 1860, as 39 yo farmer Christopher & 33 yo Rebecca Vandegrift. Their son Abraham was listed as living with them.11
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Leonard George Vandegrift Sr., son of Christopher Vandegrift and Lydia Aspril, on 27 January 1876 at Parsonage at Port Penn, Port Penn, New Castle Co., Delaware, by Rev. S. G. Boardman. Rebecca was the widow of Leonard's brother Christopher according to DAR records; she was unnamed daughter of Leonard's uncle Abram according to Scharf..12,10,13,14
Census1880Rebecca and Leonard appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 67 yo farmer Geo L & 52 yo wife Rebecca G Vandegrift. Their children Ellen Elizabeth, Lewis Cass and Abram Henry were listed as living with them, as well as 60 yo cousin Ruth Pennington.15
Death*Rebecca died on 10 June 1899 at in home of her niece Sarah Ruth Vandegrift Woods in McDonough, New Castle Co., Delaware, at age 73, from a heart attack. As she collapsed across her bed she trapped her niece, 4 year old Ruth Vandegrift, daughter of Isaac Janvier and Sarah Ruth Vandegrift Woods, "beneath her ample body" suffocating the child.16,7,1
Burial*She was buried at Old Drawyers Church Cemetery in Odessa, New Castle Co., Delaware.7
