Census1830 | Harvey is probably the male age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Joseph Mulford, in the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., Ohio, though there should be two sons in this age bracket, John Collins being the other.4 |
Marriage* | He married Eliza Doctor on 20 October 1836 in Warren Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Permelia J (1839- ), Joseph Martin (c1843- , m. Amanda M Urton 1874), Sarah A (c1846- ), and Rebecca Elizabeth (1849-1937, m. Ross Ackley) Mulford. In the 1900 census Eliza shows 5 born with 1 living.5,6 |
Census1840* | Harvey appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Warren Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 00001-100010001 as 20-29 yo Harvey Mulford. His wife Eliza is likely the 20-29 yo female, their daughter Permelia the <5 yo female. The female 60-69 yo might be his mother though her age bracket is one too high.7 |
Census1850 | Harvey and Eliza appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Warren Co., Ohio, enumerated 21 September 1850, as 35 yo grocer Henry & 31 yo Eliza E Mulford. Their children 11 yo Permelia F, 7 yo Joseph M, 3 yo Sarah A, and 1 yo Eleanor Mulford were listed as living with them.2 |

Death* | There's a Harvey Mulford (unk-1871) at Find A Grave, d. 20 Jan 1861, buried Bellefontaine City Cemetery, Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio, who may be this person. No other Mulfords at this cemetery however.8 |

Amos Mulford1
M, #8654, b. September 1820, d. 11 April 1905
Birth* | Amos, son of Joseph Mulford and Elizabeth Downey, was born in September 1820 in Ohio. Primary sources tying Amos to alleged parents Joseph and Elizabeth have not been found by this researcher. However in the 1850 census Amos lives next door to his mother and sister Elizabeth. His middle initial likely S (Seborn?).3 |

FSTrees claims a daughter Rebecca and there's a Find A Grave memorial for a woman of that name at Indian Creek (unk-1849). The memorial says 5Y 8M, D/O A&E MULFORD yet the gravestone says 'Wife' which surely is not the case for a 5 yo. Ancestry & FSTrees both allege a daughter Ossie (variations) Jane Mulford (1848-1849). There are Mortality Schedule entries for a child of this name but they don't tie into any particular parents.5,6 |

J. David Mulford1
M, #8655, b. between 1822 and 1823
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 15 March 2021 re J David's parents. I've not found a source linking David to parents Joseph Mulford & Elizabeth Downey. David fits Joseph's 1840 census enumeration but without names it's inconclusive. He never shows in a naming census with his parents or any of his siblings. Next there's the problem of whether our David married Mary Jane Keist or Mary Jane Hillhouse. FamilySearch (ID KLB6-BNB) claims Keist. Ancestry's Mulford-Armitage tree claims Hillhouse. There are marriage records for both - David & Hillhouse in August 1846 in Ripley, Indiana, with David & Keist in April 1847 in Logan, Ohio. The censuses all show his wife as Mary Jane so are no help at all on this issue. It's possible he married Hillhouse, she died immediately, then he married Keist within nine months but it's a stretch. I believe Keist to be the mother of the children found in the censuses and at Find A Grave for the following reasons: a) The death record of Adam Mulford shows his parents as David Mulford & Jane Kzart (as indexed, no image available). b) The 1850 census has David & Mary Jane in Logan County, Ohio. That's where he & Keist were married. The Hillhouse marriage was in Ripley, Indiana. Far from conclusive but it's an interesting data point. |
Birth* | J., son of Joseph Mulford and Elizabeth Downey, was born between 1822 and 1823 in Ohio.2 |
Census1830 | J. is probably one of the three males age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Joseph Mulford, in the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Warren Co., Ohio.3 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Jane Keist on 1 April 1847 in Logan Co., Ohio. David & Mary Jane may have had one other child, Ida May Mulford (1862-1863), Find A Grave memorial no. 138031704. She is buried at Oakwood, same as possible siblings Adam and Caroline, but the details on her headstone photo are unreadble.4,5,6 |
Census1850* | J. and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Lake Twp., Logan Co., Ohio, enumerated 19 April 1850, as 27 yo tailor David & 24 yo Mary J Mulford. Their children William Harvey and Sarah "Sadie" were listed as living with them.2 |
Census1860 | J. and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Wayne Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 29 August 1860, as 38 yo tailor (indexed jailer) David & 32 yo Jane Mulford. Their children Sarah "Sadie", Adam and Charlotte "Lottie" were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1870 | J. and Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 22 June 1870, as 47 yo tailor (indexed sailor) David & 46 yo Jane Mulford. Their children Adam and Charlotte "Lottie" were listed as living with them.8 |
Census1880 | J. and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 57 yo tailor David & 55 yo wife Mary J Mulford. Their daughter Charlotte "Lottie" was listed as living with them, as well as 7 yo granddaughter Mary J Tubs. This enumeration is way off in showing both of David's parents being born in 'Ire' (Ireland?)9 |
Death* | Ancestry's Mulford-Armitage tree claims he died 29 Jan 1882 in Warsaw, Kosciusko, Indiana, all without citation. |

FSTrees claims a daughter Rebecca and there's a Find A Grave memorial for a woman of that name at Indian Creek (unk-1849). Henry J. Mulford1
M, #8666, b. 1839, d. 13 January 1897
Birth* | Henry, son of John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, was born in 1839 in Shelby Co., Ohio.2 |
Census1850 | Henry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, as 11 yo Henry J.3 |
Census1860 | Henry appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pratt, Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, as 20 yo Henry Mulford.4 |
Milit-Service* | Henry J. Mulford served as a Private with Co. D, 54th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War between 1861 and 1864. Henry enlisted 10 Sep 1861 and mustered out at East Point, Georgia, on 19 Sep 1864.5,6,7,8,9 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Eliza McKinney on 30 November 1865 at Shelby Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their only child was John E Mulford (1867- ). John shows up in the 1880 census as 13 yo yet he's missing in the 1870 census.10,11 |
Census1870 | Henry appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Pierce Twp., Page Co., Iowa in the household of his parents, John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, as 30 yo Henry Mulford.12 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Elizabeth F. Stafford on 31 January 1872 at Montgomery Co., Iowa. My preliminary research suggests their children were Stella Miron (1872- , aka Marion & Marian, m. John S Cresse 1891), Claudia Maud (1874-1931), Charles Oakley (1876- , m. Alice Bedel 1896), Alta (1878- ), Nellie Blanche (1883-1913, m. Joseph Weidman 1902), and Walter R Mulford (1886- ). The Larson-Boileau Family Tree at Ancestry also shows Carrie E ( ), and Leah E Mulford ( ) but provides no evidence and they don't show in any censuses.13,14,15,2,16 |
Census1880* | Henry and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Pierce Twp., Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 29 July 1880, as 41 yo farmer H J & 36 yo wife O Mulford. Their children 7 yo Stella, 13 yo Johny, 5 yo Claudia, 4 yo Oakley, and 2 yo Alta Mulford were listed as living with them. Elizabeth is almost certainly enumerated with the letter O based on how census take wrote Oakley's name. No explanation for this. There's no indication from other sources that Henry had a 3rd wife in between Eliza and Elizabeth.11 |
CensusNF1 | Henry appeared on the 1885 Iowa State Census of Holt Twp., Taylor Co., Iowa, enumerated 1885, as 45 yo Henry J Mulford.. No other members of the family were listed.17 |
CensusNF1* | Henry appeared on the 1895 Iowa State Census of Gravity, Taylor Co., Iowa, enumerated 1895, as 55 yo Henry J Mulford.. No other members of the family were listed.18 |
Death* | Henry died on 13 January 1897 in Gravity, Taylor Co., Iowa. Find A Grave's date is 15 Jan, likely the burial date rather than the death date.19,2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Holt Cemetery in New Market, Taylor Co., Iowa. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2 |
