Census1830	Frederick appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Western Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 100001-122001 as 30-39 yo Frederick Helsley. His wife Elizabeth likely the female 30-39 yo. Daughters Lydia and Dorothy the two females 10-14 yo. Daughters Sarah and Isabella the two females 5-9 yo, though Sarah is probably one bracket too young.      There are seven other Helsley HOHs on this census page, viz. Peter, Jacob Jr., Daniel, Joseph, Catherine, George Jacob and Christopher Helsley.3

Ancestry doesn't have this enumeration indexed and when you track it down manually the 'hover' names are off by about 20 rows. It is indexed at FamilySearch.2

Milit-Service*	Martin Heistand likely served with the Union Army during the Civil War . There are three Martin Heistands from Ohio in the NPS database. One with the 15th Regt., Ohio Infantry, two others with the 49th Regt., Ohio Infantry. I can't tell which is our man without more research.8

Two news articles suggest it's our Anna but nothing quite pins it down. Anna had lived with her father until his death about 7 years ago. That's okay within a year. She'd been living with Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Moore since her father's death. Miss Heistand 'is about 20' which matches our Anna perfectly. See cited newspaper articles for details.4,5

She's enumerated as 11 yo Ada M in the 1900 census, suggesting a birthyear ca. 1889. FamilySearch's Ohio, County Births, 1841-2003 dB has a listing for a Mary Bortel, b. 08 Jan 1889 in Henry Co., Ohio, d/o Raymond Bortel and Lydia Hudrix. So Ada Mary Bortel appears to have been her name. You'll find the middle name listed as Mae at times; also Mae Bortel as a separate person. Both are incorrect in my opinion.5,2

Her Find A Grave memorial claims 23 Apr 1830 but that doesn't square with the census records. There's no headstone, though the inscription is claimed to read "wife of Samuel, 62Y 9M 21D." Using date of death and age at death results in the date I have used in this record.      A photo request was sent to Find A Grave. This is the response received 20 Jun 2024: I searched the stated plot or section and could not find the grave. Details: I found the plot Catheren, E-141-2 and there is no marker there. One son claimed by FamilySearch Trees but not entered in this dB is Sam Crobarger (1875-1876). There is a death record at FamilySearch Trees's Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997 for this person but no parents are listed. Likely Sam was in fact the son of Sam & Catherine.8

The Nelson-Kline tree at Ancestry calls her Delaney Maria Magdalene. Her FSTrees entry (L1GR-B1P) calls her Madgelane Mary. My guess is Delaney, Laney, etc. are nicknames for Magdalene and were not her proper name.2,1
