Anna Dale Heistand1

Birth* | Anna, daughter of Rev. John William Heistand and Rebecca Jane Wright, was born in 1885. SS Apps provides no date, no location.3,1 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 14 July 2023 re eloped? There's an interesting story about an Anna Heistand who eloped with married man Newton Osborn in Jun 1905. Two news articles suggest it's our Anna but nothing quite pins it down. Anna had lived with her father until his death about 7 years ago. That's okay within a year. She'd been living with Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Moore since her father's death. Miss Heistand 'is about 20' which matches our Anna perfectly. See cited newspaper articles for details.4,5 |
Marriage* | She married William W. Turnbull on 9 July 1908 in Marshall Co., Indiana.6,3 |
Census1910* | Anna and William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana, enumerated 20 April 1910, as 35 yo foundry moulder William & 26 yo wife Annie D Turnbull. William's 67 yo widowed mother Almira Turnbull and 15 yo nephew Arthur Pero were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1920 | Anna and William appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Thornapple Twp., Rusk Co., Wisconsin, enumerated 14 January 1920, as 44 yo farmer William N & 35 yo wife Anna D Turnbull.8 |

Marriage* | He married Catherine Gierhart on 12 November 1840 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. The Heistand Family Tree at Ancestry claims Michael m1 Susannah Welsh and that she was the mother of John Wesley (1844-1934). Clearly nonsense since they show Michael's m2 Catherine Gierhart as mother of Emma (1841-1923). I find no evidence for this alleged m1. Michael's FamilySearch Trees entry (L4MS-88V) shows the marriage to Catherine as his m1, but also an m2 to Frances Biddle in 1850. No evidence is supplied in support.5,6 |

Lydia Ann Andrix1
F, #6592, b. circa 1 January 1848, d. 23 December 1919
Birth* | Lydia, daughter of David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, was born circa 1 January 1848 in Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio. Mason claims 01 Feb, Find A Grave 01 Jan. The headstone says only 1848.2,1 |
Census1850 | Lydia appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Washington, Henry Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, as 3 yo Lydia Ann Andreck.3 |
Census1860 | Lydia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington, Henry Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, as 12 yo Lydia Andrick.4 |
Marriage* | She married Raymond R. Bortel on 5 December 1866 in Henry Co., Ohio. The 1900 census shows 12 born with 8 living. The 4 deceased children were infant daughters A, B, C, and son Delbert U Bortel. The 8 living were Harvey, George, James, Zelma, Margaret, Catherine, Ada/Mary, and Clifford. The only potential hiccup in this list is Ada/Mary. She's enumerated as 11 yo Ada M in the 1900 census, suggesting a birthyear ca. 1889. FamilySearch's Ohio, County Births, 1841-2003 dB has a listing for a Mary Bortel, b. 08 Jan 1889 in Henry Co., Ohio, d/o Raymond Bortel and Lydia Hudrix. So Ada Mary Bortel appears to have been her name. You'll find the middle name listed as Mae at times; also Mae Bortel as a separate person. Both are incorrect in my opinion.5,2 |
Census1870* | Lydia and Raymond appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 13 August 1870, as 22 yo day laborer R & 23 yo Lydia Bortel. Their children Harvey Burt and George Washington were listed as living with them.6 |
Census1880 | Lydia and Raymond appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 2 June 1880, as 32 yo laborer Raymond R & 32 yo Lydia A Bortel. Their children Harvey Burt, George Washington, James A. and Zelma Gay "Zella" were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1900 | Lydia and Raymond appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 52 yo day laborer Raymond R & 52 yo wife Lydia A Bartell. Their children Addis Mae "Ada", Clifford Raymond and Catherine Belle were listed as living with them.8 |
Census1910* | Lydia appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Damascus Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 5 May 1910, as 62 yo widow Lydia A Bortel. Her son Clifford Raymond was listed as living with her.9 |
Death* | Lydia died on 23 December 1919 in Grand Rapids Twp., Wood Co., Ohio.10,2,1 |
Burial* | She was buried on 25 December 1919 at Texas Cemetery in Texas, Henry Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.2,1 |

Catherine Andrix1
F, #6596, b. 23 May 1838, d. 16 March 1901
Birth* | Catherine, daughter of David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, was born on 23 May 1838 in Seneca Co., Ohio. Her Find A Grave memorial claims 23 Apr 1830 but that doesn't square with the census records. There's no headstone, though the inscription is claimed to read "wife of Samuel, 62Y 9M 21D." Using date of death and age at death results in the date I have used in this record. A photo request was sent to Find A Grave. This is the response received 20 Jun 2024: I searched the stated plot or section and could not find the grave. Details: I found the plot Catheren, E-141-2 and there is no marker there. The same is true for her husband Samuel, E-141-1. I also notice on the cemetery records that the last name is Chrobarger, but the dates are correct.2,1 |
Census1840 | Catherine is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, David Andrix, in the 1840 Federal Census of Clinton, Seneca Co., Ohio.3 |
Census1850 | Catherine appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Washington, Henry Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, as 13 yo Catharine Andreck.4 |
Marriage* | Her first marriage was to Frederick Obenour on 5 February 1857 at Hardin Co., Ohio.5 |
Census1860* | Catherine and Frederick appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 8 June 1860, as 23 yo laborer Fredirck & 22 yo Catherine Ovenour. Their children David M. and John H. were listed as living with them.6 |
Census1870* | Catherine appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Napolean P.O., Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 13 August 1870, as 32 yo washerwoman C Obernaur. Her children David M., John H. and William Frederick were listed as living with her.7 |
Marriage* | Her second marriage was to Samuel Crobarger in 1873. The 1900 census shows married 26 years, Catherine with 6 born & 3 living. One son claimed by FamilySearch Trees but not entered in this dB is Sam Crobarger (1875-1876). There is a death record at FamilySearch Trees's Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997 for this person but no parents are listed. Likely Sam was in fact the son of Sam & Catherine.8 |
Census1880* | Catherine and Samuel appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 11 June 1880, as 49 yo farmer Samuel & 42 yo wife Catherine Chrobarger. Their children Henry Charles, Arthur W., David M., John H. and William Frederick were listed as living with them.9 |
Census1900 | Catherine and Samuel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 21 June 1900, as 68 yo farmer Samuel & 63 yo wife Catherine Crobarger. Their children Henry Charles and Arthur W. were listed as living with them.10 |
Death* | Catherine died on 16 March 1901 in Liberty Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, at age 62.2 |
Burial* | She was buried at Youngs Cemetery in Liberty Center, Henry Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.2 |
