Isabella Helsley1
F, #7302, b. 23 September 1822, d. 31 December 1901
Birth* | Isabella, daughter of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, was born on 23 September 1822. Middle name possibly Sarah.2 |

Samantha A V Showman 1874), Savilla Ellen "Livey" (1857-1928, m1 Hugh Polk 1877, m2 Noah Wolf c1890), George Henry (1861-1924, m. Emma E Stickley 1882) and Mary Elizabeth Mumaw (1863-1961, m. Census1860 | Isabella appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cabin Hill Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as a neighbor of her brother-in-law & sister Abraham "Abram" Strickler and Sarah "Sallie" Helsley.7 |

Burial* | She was buried at Saint Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conicville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides portrait photo but no headstone photo.2 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 3 June 2023 re dearth of sources. I've found no quality source connecting Isabella to her purported parents Frederick Helsley & Elizabeth Andrick. Isabella had left her parents' home by the 1850 census. No siblings ever lived with her in any census enumeration. |

Gertrude Calysta Vandegrift1,2
F, #7309, b. 19 January 1879, d. June 1961
Birth* | Gertrude, daughter of William M. Vandegrift Jr. and Charlesanna Ashcraft, was born on 19 January 1879.1 |
Census1900 | Gertrude appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania in the household of her mother, Charlesanna Ashcraft, as 20 yo daughter Gertrude Vandegrift.3 |
Marriage* | She married Milton Dock Speece circa 5 January 1911. I'm not convinced this marriage record for Wilberr & Gertrude is our couple. However it's the only record I've found that's even close. Milton's NY Index entry says 05 Jan, Gertrude's says 06 Jan. He is listed as Wilberr D, not Milton D, in the marriage record, but Milton at Find A Grave and in his death notice. I puzzled over the name and decided it's likely a transcription error - W for M, b for t, err for on. However, in the 1920 census for Philadelphia we find Wilbur B & Gertrude C Speece and there's no mistaking it says Wilbur. So is this 1911 marriage record not for Milton after all?.4,5,6 |
Death* | Gertrude died in June 1961 in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey, at age 82.7,5 |
Burial* | She was buried at New Camden Cemetery in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with husband Milton. It would be interesting to know who had the headstones cared to read 'Grandfather' and 'Grandmother' since Milton and Gertrude are believed to have had no children of their own.5 |

Milton Dock Speece1
M, #7313, b. 1871, d. 1 February 1948
Birth* | Milton was born in 1871, s/o Henry Rank Speese & Marietta Dock.1 |
Marriage* | He married Gertrude Calysta Vandegrift, daughter of William M. Vandegrift Jr. and Charlesanna Ashcraft, circa 5 January 1911. So is this 1911 marriage record not for Milton after all?.2,1,3 |
Death* | Milton died on 1 February 1948 in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey.3,1 |
Burial* | He was buried at New Camden Cemetery in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with wife Gertrude.4 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 1 October 2022 re FS Trees. His entry (ID no. 96DZ-C3J) says he m1 Sallie Sheaffer on 12 Jun 1890 in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland, PA, had at least one child Ida Speese (1892-1978), but provides no source citation. He m2 Jessie M Latchford (1874-1905) on 09 Dec 1894 in Newport, Perry, PA, had at least one child Jessie B Speece (1895-1978). This is documented in PA County Marriages. In the 1900 census Milton is living with his maternal grandparents Jacob & Susan Dock in Harrisburg, PA. Milton is 28 yo, married 6 years, with 9 yo daughter Ida M in the same household. He m3 Clara E Malchawer on 14 Jan 1903 in Carlisle, Cumberland, PA, apparently no children. This is documented in PA County Marriages. Milton & Clara are living in Philadelphia in the 1910 census. They're 38 and 36 yo with 15 yo daughter Jessie. In the 1910 census Milton is living with his mother Marietta Sprese [as indexed by Ancestry] in Harrisburg, PA with siblings Charles, Edna, Harry and August Sprese. Milton shows married either 2 or 12 years, neither of which makes much sense. His 1911 m4 to Gertrude Calysta Vandegrift is included here.5,6,2 |
