Judge John William de la Fletcher "Alphabet" Mack1
M, #8986, b. 12 January 1821, d. 4 August 1890
Birth* | John, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born on 12 January 1821 in Maury Co., Tennessee. Unclear if the 'de la' in his name is lowercase or proper case. History of Greene Co. says he was born 15 January.1,3 |
Census1830 | John is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1830 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee, as 5-9 yo male.4 |
Census1840 | John is probably the male age 20 to 29 listed in the household of his father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1840 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee, as 20-29 yo male.5 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Murphy on 2 May 1843 at Maury Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Frances Ione R. (1843-1916, m. Thomas F Jessup in 1864. Three children at Find A Grave), Sarah Roberta (1845-1922, m. Francis Marion Thompson. One child at Find A Grave), John D L W (c1847- ), and Nathan Green Perry Mack (1849-1849). History of Green County says they were married in 1842.6,7,3 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Mary Josephine Murphy on 12 September 1850 at Maury Co., Tennessee. Find A Grave's date is 12 September but that doesn't work very well with the 1850 census of 27 September which has John and Mary living in separate homes. My preliminary research suggests their children were Nathaniel C (c1849- , b. TN), James B (1854-1922, m. Nancy Elizabeth Shakleford in 1875. Two children at Find A Grave), Mary M (c1855- ), Robert Anderson (1859-1933, m. Lillian Burton, m. Carrie Ella Aberly in 1921. Four children at Find A Grave), Charles L E (1863-1913, m. Anna Tisdell, m. Mary Alline Tisdell. One chld at Find A Grave), Clarence F (1864-1867), Mineola LIncoln "Minnie" (1866-1934, m. William Thompson Fielder. Six children at Find A Grave), Willie F (1868-1870), and William Fletcher Mack (1873-1918, m. Katherine Holaway).8 |
Census1850* | John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 27 September 1850, as 29 yo farmer J W D L F Mack. His children 6 yo Ione (indexed as Jane), 4 yo Sarah and 2 yo Robert Mack were listed as living with him. It's odd that his new wife Mary is not included as they were pretty clearly married prior to the census date. John's column for 'married within the year' is not checked. Mary is enumerated as 18 yo Josephine Murphy with her widowed mother Charlotte Murphy and four of her siblings just two doors below.9 |
Move | John moved his residence from Tennessee to Springfield, Greene County, Missouri in 1852.3 |
Occupation* | John was deputy circuit clerk between 1855 and 1859 at Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. From 1859 to 1861 he was elected circuit clerk. John was admitted to the bar in 1856.3 |
Census1860 | John and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 August 1860, as 40 yo lawyer J D & 28 yo M J Mack. Seven children were listed as living with them. Each except Mary is listed by initials only. From Alphabet's first marriage to Sarah Murphy we find 16 yo Frances Ione, 14 yo Sarah Roberta, 12 yo John W and 9 yo Nathaniel C Mack. From his second marriage to Mary we find 6 yo James B, 4 yo Mary and 1 yo Robert (Robinson?) Anderson Mack. Alphabet's brother Robert A C Mack was also living with them.10 |
Occupation | John was editor of the Springfield Journal between 1862 and 1865.3 |
Occupation | John was a Missouri state senator between 1863 and 1866.3 |
Milit-Service* | Judge John William de la Fletcher "Alphabet" Mack served as Lieutenant/Adjutant with Cos. F & S of the 46th Regiment, Missouri Infantry during the Civil War circa 1865.11,12 |
Occupation | John was Greene County prosecuting attorney between 1867 and 1870.3 |
Census1870* | John and Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 August 1870, as 49 yo lawyer Jno W D L F & 38 yoMary Mack. The following children were listed as living with them, 19 yo Nathaniel, 16 yo James, 14 yo Mary, 11 yo Robinson, 9 yo Charles and 4 yo Minnie Mack.13 |
Census1880 | John and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 59 yo farmer Jno W D L F & 48 yo wife Mary J Mack. Four of their children were listed as living with them: namely, 21 yo son Robert A, 19 yo Chas L, 14 yo Minnie L and 7 yo Wm F Mack, as well 25 yo niece Allens Murphy, 65 yo farm laborer Robert A C Mack (relationship unknown), and 79 yo grandmother Charlotte Murphy. There are no dwelling or family numbers on this census page so it's hard to tell where one household stops and the next begins.14 |
Death* | John died on 4 August 1890 at his home in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, at age 69.15,1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. Headstone photo & obit available at Find A Grave.1 |

Nancy H. W. Mack1
F, #8988, b. 1827, d. 1907
Birth* | Nancy, daughter of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born in 1827 in Tennessee.2 |
Census1830 | Nancy is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1830 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.3 |
Census1840 | Nancy is probably the female age 10 to 14 listed in the household of her father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1840 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.4 |
Marriage* | She married Ethelbert W. "Elbert" Veach on 31 May 1848 in Maury Co., Tennessee. I can't get a good handle on the number and names of the children of Elbert & Nancy. McConnell says they had 10 children, 8 of whom died young. Their names according to him were Constantine, James Franklin, William Allen, daughter unnamed, Sarah Catherine, Martha Ann, two more unnamed daughters who died in infancy, Thomas E and Rachel Willie Veach, who were twins. This list jives with the census records except for one person, 1 yo Thomas J Veach in the 1850 census. He is in 4th spot so could be the first unnamed daughter, or McConnell may have simply missed him. McConnell puts the marriage date in 1847, but the TN County Marriages record clearly says 1848. Son Thomas Elbert Veach (1866-1930, Find A Grave memorial no. 18758725) m1 Mary Elizabeth Pierce in 1889, m2 Mary Ann Worton 1902.5,6,2,7 |
Census1850* | Nancy and Ethelbert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 2, Johnson Co., Illinois, enumerated 23 October 1850, as 25 yo farmer Elbert & 21 yo Nancy Veach. Their children 3 yo Jackson F and 1 yo Thomas J Veach were listed as living with them. This is a problematic enumeration. Currently HQO has it indexed under the name James Elms who is not shown on this or the next census page. Second item is son 'Jackson'. McConnell gives his name as James Franklin. Are they one and the same? This family had so many children who died young that it's hard to know. Elbert is a farmer.8,7 |
Census1860 | Nancy and Ethelbert appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dist. 2, Henry Co., Tennessee, enumerated 1 September 1860, as 35 yo farmer Ethwelbert & 34 yo Nancy H Veatch. Two of their children were listed as living with them: namely, 11 yo Constantine and 5 yo Sarah C Veatch. All four of them born in Tennessee. Elbert is a farmer.9 |
Census1870 | Nancy and Ethelbert appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Goreville PO, T11S R2E, Johnson Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 July 1870, as 46 yo farmer Elbert W & 42 yo Nancy Veach. Four children were listed as living with them: namely, 13 yo Sarah, 9 yo Martha and 3 yo twins Thomas and Rachel Veach. Elbert is a farmer.10 |
Census1880 | Nancy and Ethelbert appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Pct., Williamson Co., Illinois, enumerated 18 June 1880, as 55 yo farmer E W & 53 yo wife Nancy Veach. Their twins 13 yo Thomas and Rachel Veach were listed as living with them. Ebert is again a farmer.11 |
Death* | Nancy died in 1907 in Illinois.2 |
Burial* | She was buried at County Line Cemetery in Creal Springs, Williamson Co., Illinois. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2 |

Dr. Robert A. C. Mack1
M, #8990, b. June 1835
Birth* | Robert, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born in June 1835 in Maury Co., Tennessee.1,3 |
Census1840 | Robert is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1840 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.4 |
Census1850 | Robert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, as 15 yo Robt Mack.5 |
Census1860 | Robert appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, as 25 yo lawyer R A C Mack in the household of Judge John William de la Fletcher "Alphabet" Mack and Mary Josephine Murphy; as 40 yo lawyer J D & 28 yo M J Mack.6 |
Marriage* | Their first marriage was to Lucinda A. "Lucy" McFarland on 14 November 1864. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ellen R "Ella" (b1870- ,m. Daniel B Atteberry 1891 in Springfield), and Sarah Lenora Mack (b1870- ) both infants in their parents' divorce papers of Jan 1869). Both girls are found in the 1870 census with their grandmother Martha McFarland in Campbell, Greene, MO, ages 4 yo and 2 yo respectively, as Ellen and Sarah Mack. FSTrees's entry LD9R-5V7 claims two other children for this couple, Sarah (1868- ) and Jennie (1878- ). There's a 2 yo Sarah living with Martha McFarland in Greene Co in the 1880 census.1 |
Marr-Divorce* | Robert was divorced from Lucinda A. "Lucy" McFarland at Greene Co., Missouri, on 26 January 1869. Find A Grave cites Greene County Abstract of Divorce Records MACK, Lucinda/MACK, Robert AC - Final decree January 26, 1869. Book I, P. 277. Plaintiff resumes maiden name Lucinda A McFarland. Defendant RAC Mack awarded care and custody and support of his two infant children, females, named Ellen Mack and Lenora Mack.1 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Mattie M. George on 10 October 1869 at Greene Co., Missouri. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Sallie Mack (1874-1905, no mother link Find A Grave, m. Albert Tarrant ca. 1895). RAC and Mattie likely divorced or separated before the 1880 census.7,1 |
Census1870* | Robert and Mattie appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 27 June 1870, as 34 yo court clerk Robert & 17 yo Mattie Mack. No children, but Robert's 24 yo sister Donna Thompson and Donna's 3 yo daughter Allie Thompson were listed as living with them. Donna's husband George W Thompson had died in 1867.8 |
Marr-Divorce* | Robert was divorced from Mattie M. George between 1870 and 1875.9 |
Marriage | He married Lucinda A. "Lucy" McFarland on 25 December 1875 in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. My preliminary research suggests their children from this second marriage were Jessie R (1870- ), and Jennie Mack (1878-1909).10 |
Census1880* | Robert appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 45 yo farm laborer Robbert A C Mack. This is a messed-up enumeration in that there are no HOH numbers so you can't tell where one family ends and the next begins. It could be argued that RAC is living with his brother-in-law Alphabet Mack but my guess he's his own HOH. No wife, no children, but 79 yo Charlotte Murphy is in the home as grandmother. RAC's grandmothers were Sarah Wilson and Mary Blair so whose grandmother this is is unclear. RAC's brother Alphabet Mack and his family live next door. The last entry in that enumeration is 25 yo niece Allens (Allene?) Murphy. The only Murphy I know of in this branch of the family is RAC's aunt Eleanor who married Miles Pickney Murphy. His mother would not in any way be considered RAC's grandmother. There's a small scribble in the marriage column which could be a 'D' indicating another divorce.11 |
Marr-Divorce | Robert was divorced from Lucinda A. "Lucy" McFarland before 16 June 1880, date based on the 1880 census of this date wherein Lucy is marked 'widowed/divorced'.12 |
Census1900 | Robert appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Morgan Twp., Dade Co., Missouri, as 64 yo widower attorney Robert A Mack in the household of his son-in-law Albert and daughter Sally Tarrant. It's a bit odd that RAC is listed as boarder rather than father-in-law. Also that now he's a widower whereas in the prior census he was divorced. Did he squeeze in a third wife in this 20 year window?.3 |
Death* | Robert died in Missouri.1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Rice Cemetery in Dadeville, Dade Co., Missouri. Headstone photo & extensive bio available at Find A Grave.1 |
BioNote* | Biography Note of 6 September 2018: In my analysis RAC's bio from his Find A Grave memorial contains at least one error: Find A Grave claims, Robert is in the 1860 Census listing of Linden Township, Christian County, age 25, a physician. His personal estate is $100. He is living with the John T Walker family. Instead I find him living with his brother Alphabet Mack in Springfield as 25 yo R A C Mack as a lawyer with personal estate of $250. I don't believe the man in Christian County is our RAC. His Find A Grave bio continues, The Greene County Abstract of Divorce Records MACK, Lucinda/MACK, Robert AC - Final decree January 26, 1869. Book I, P. 277. Plaintiff resumes maiden name Lucinda A McFarland. Defendant RAC Mack awarded care and custody and support of his two infant children, females, named Ellen Mack and Lenora Mack. This jives with subsequent sources.1 |

Ellen V. Mack1
F, #8991, b. 3 November 1843
Birth* | Ellen, daughter of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born on 3 November 1843 in Maury Co., Tennessee.2 |
Census1850 | Ellen appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of her parents, John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, as 8 yo Ellen Mack.3 |
Census1860 | Ellen appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 17 yo Ellin Mack in the household of her brother James W. Mack; as 30 yo lawyer J W Mack.4 |
Burial* | She was buried. Ellen has an unusual burial entry at Find A Grave. On the one hand it says she's buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, Springfield, Greene, MO. On the other it says, She is obviously not buried here. It is not known as to whether she married, moved away or was buried in another cemetery. Patti Heath, owner of Ellen's Find A Grave memorial, writes in response to my question, It means we have no idea for sure if she is buried there or not. She already had a grave reserved but we have no idea if she married or what for we can't find Death records or marriage records. So that is why that is there and I got that info from a Mack cousin closer related to her..2 |

Sarah Elizabeth Murphy1
F, #8992, b. 28 November 1826, d. 22 July 1849
Birth* | Sarah was born on 28 November 1826 in Maury Co., Tennessee, d/o Nathaniel Green Murphy & Charlotte (or Charlotta) Perry.2,3 |
Marriage* | She married Judge John William de la Fletcher "Alphabet" Mack, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 2 May 1843 in Maury Co., Tennessee. History of Green County says they were married in 1842.4,2,3 |

Mary Josephine Murphy1
F, #8993, b. 17 June 1831, d. 8 February 1895
Birth* | Mary was born on 17 June 1831 in Maury Co., Tennessee, d/o Nathaniel Green Murphy & Charlotte Perry which make her Alphabet's first wife's sister.2 |
Marriage* | She married Judge John William de la Fletcher "Alphabet" Mack, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 12 September 1850 in Maury Co., Tennessee. Katherine Holaway).2 |
Census1850* | Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee, as 18 yo Josephine Murphy in the household of her widowed mother 48 yo Charlotte Murphy. Her husband (if Find A Grave's marriage date is correct) is enumerated two families above.3 |
Census1860 | Mary and John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 August 1860, as 40 yo lawyer J D & 28 yo M J Mack. Alphabet's brother Robert A C Mack was also living with them.4 |
Census1870* | Mary and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 August 1870, as 49 yo lawyer Jno W D L F & 38 yoMary Mack. The following children were listed as living with them, 19 yo Nathaniel, 16 yo James, 14 yo Mary, 11 yo Robinson, 9 yo Charles and 4 yo Minnie Mack.5 |
Census1880 | Mary and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 59 yo farmer Jno W D L F & 48 yo wife Mary J Mack. There are no dwelling or family numbers on this census page so it's hard to tell where one household stops and the next begins.6 |
Death* | Mary died on 8 February 1895 in Greene Co., Missouri, at age 63.2 |
Burial* | She was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. Headstone photo & obit available at Find A Grave.2 |

James W. Mack1,2
M, #8994, b. circa 18 January 1829, d. 21 May 1882
Birth* | James, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born circa 18 January 1829 in Tennessee, date based on age 52y 4m 3d on his headstone.4,3,5 |
Census1830 | James is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1830 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.3 |
Census1840 | James is probably the male age 10 to 14 listed in the household of his father, John Armenius "Jack" Mack, in the 1840 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.6 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Eliza Ann Smith on 13 September 1849 at Maury Co., Tennessee.7 |
Census1850* | James and Eliza appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 26 September 1850, as 21 yo farmer Jas W & 20 yo Eliza Mack.8 |
Census1860* | James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 5 August 1860, as 30 yo lawyer J W Mack. His sisters Ellen, Donna and Agnes were living with him as well as his mother Sarah (as Sallie) Mack.2 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Nellie Waters on 29 May 1867 at Moniteau Co., Missouri.1 |
Census1870* | James and Nellie appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri, enumerated 24 June 1870, as 40 yo lawyer James W & 26 yo Nellie Mack. No children and no known relatives nearby.9 |
Census1880 | James and Nellie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 June 1880, as 49 yo postmaster James W & 35 yo wife Ellen M Mack. Two boarders are also in the home. On the second page of the enumeration we find another family with different dwelling number but same family number as James & Ellen. Surname is Hartman and wife is 25 yo Fannie, born KY. I don't see how they're related so best guess is the enumerator simply botched the family number.5 |
Occupation* | James was postmaster 'for a number of years' before May 1882 at Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri. He had been a lawyer previously but retired from that job due to 'failing health'.10 |
Death* | James died on 21 May 1882 at his home in Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri, of tuberculosis. Find A Grave provides photo of his headstone and cites info from DAR records Johnson Co Historical Society.10,4 |

Narcissa J. Mack1,2,3
F, #8995, b. between 1836 and 1840, d. 2 April 1915

Agnes Mack1
F, #8997, b. 1850, d. 1942
Birth* | Agnes, daughter of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, was born in 1850 in Tennessee.2,1 |
Census1860 | Agnes appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 10 yo Agness Mack in the household of her brother James W. Mack; as 30 yo lawyer J W Mack.1 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 11 October 2021 re parents. The evidence that the Agnes Mack who married G W Hood is the same Agnes d/o John Mack & Sallie Mack is circumstantial. I've not found the golden source for Agnes which lists both her parents and spouse or married name, e.g. a marriage record or death certificate. My biggest concern is that in all of Agnes's census enumerations which list parents' birthstate, 1880-1930, she shows her father born in TN rather than NC, and her mother in TX rather than VA. Did she really not know where her parents were born? The evidence for states of NC & VA is compelling. However, searching the 1860 census I find only one Agnes Mack of appropriate age in the entire country. Thee circumstantial evidence is good enough that I've entered this marriage as fact. |
Marriage* | She married Cpl. Rev. Graeme W. Hood on 2 August 1867 in Jefferson City, Cole Co., Missouri. My preliminary research suggests their children were Elizabeth Lydah (1868-1889, m. Col. Maximillian Frost 1888, had son Graham b NM ca 1889), Paul (?-?, 2nd child, died in infancy, mentioned in brother Edward's bio in A Standard History), Erma (?-?, 3rd child, died in infancy, mentioned in brother Edward's bio in A Standard History), Nellie (?-?, 4th child, died in infancy, mentioned in brother Edward's bio in A Standard History), Edward Andrew (1878-1922, b. Salem, AR, m. Susan Elizabeth Bowman 1899 at Logan, KS), Frances Havergal (1882-1952, res. Tescott as Miss Frances Hood 1922), and Marie Patricia Hood (1889-1964, m. Josiah Heckert, res. Indianola, IA 1922). Married 33 years with 7 born & 3 living in the 1900 census, then 43 years with 7 and 3 in the 1910 census.3,4,5,2 |
Census1870* | Agnes and Graeme appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Holden Twp., Johnson Co., Missouri, enumerated 27 June 1870, as 28 yo store clerk Graham W & 19 yo Agnes Hood. Their 2 yo child Eliza Hood was listed as living with them.6 |

Census1880 | Agnes and Graeme appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dayton, Sebastian Co., Arkansas, enumerated 18 June 1880, as 37 yo minister Grayham & 29 yo wife Agnus Hood. Their children 12 yo Lida and 1 yo Edward Hood were listed as living with them, as well as 43 yo sister Sallie Hood.7 |
Census1900 | Agnes and Graeme appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bloomfield Twp., Mitchell Co., Kansas, enumerated 20 June 1900, as 57 yo minister Graham W & 49 yo wife Agnes Hood. Their daughters 17 yo Frances and 10 yo Marie were listed as living with them, as well as 10 yo grandson Graham H Frost.8 |
Residence* | Agnes and Graeme resided in Gypsum, Saline Co., Kansas, in 1905.9 |
Census1910 | Agnes and Graeme appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tescott, Ottawa Co., Kansas, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 67 yo M E minister Graeme & 59 yo wife Agnes Hoood. Their daughters 27 yo music teacher Frances & 20 yo common school teacher Marie were listed as living with them.5 |
Census1920 | Agnes and Graeme appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Tescott, Ottawa Co., Kansas, enumerated 19 January 1920, as 77 yo Grahame & 69 yo wife Agnes Hoood. Their 37 yo music teacher daughter Frances was listed as living with them.10 |
Census1930* | Agnes appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Tescott, Ottawa Co., Kansas, enumerated 21 April 1930, as 77 yo widow Agnes Hood. Her 44 yo daughter Francis Hood was listed as living with her.11 |

Death* | Agnes died in 1942.2 |
Burial* | She was buried at Franklin Cemetery in Tescott, Ottawa Co., Kansas. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with husband Rev. G W Hood.2 |
BioNote* | Biography Note of 11 October 2021: Daughter Lydah Frost's obit in The Santa Fe New Mexican of 19 Sep 1889 is interesting reading. She's called 'the beloved wife of Col. Max Frost'. She had given birth to a baby boy on the 8th but three days later was stricken with pueperal fever (fever due to an infection, most often of the placental site within the uterus). She died on the 18th. Lydah is noted as eldest daughter of Rev. Grahme W and Agnes Mack Hood, born in Holden, Johnson Co., MO in 1868. The family moved to northern Arkansas when she was 'a very small child'. She married Col. Max Frost of the US Land Office in Sept 1888. Her Find A Grave memorial is no. 8028098. Son Edward Andrews Hood has an obit in The Greenleaf Sentinel and an extensive bio in A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans by Wm E Connellley. His Find A Grave memorial is no. 69764950.13,14,15 |

His obit says he participated in the battle of Wilson's Creek 10 Aug 1861, and the defense of Springfield 08 Jan 1863 when the city was attacked by Confederate General Marmaduke's forces.1 |
Occupation* | Jared was elected a representative for Springfield to the Missouri legislature in 1862. He was elected again in 1876.1 |
Census1870 | Jared and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 27 June 1870, as 43 yo retail druggist Jared & 46 yo Sarah Smith. Their children 20 yo Florence, 17 yo Laura, 14 yo Narcissa, 12 yo Frank and 9 yo John Smith were listed as living with them. There are three others in the home, all surnames unknown, likely roomers or boarders.6 |
Census1880 | Jared and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 5 June 1880, as 53 yo grocer Jared E. & 57 yo wife Sarah R. Smith. Their 18 yo son John and 24 yo daughter Narcissa were listed as living with them. In addition we find Narcissa's husband 27 yo John Kintrea and their 0.5 yo daughter Bertie.7 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Mary Malinda "Amy" Hartin circa 1890, based on married 9 years in the 1900 census and Find A Grave's claim of 1890. Amy shows 1 born and 1 living in the 1900 census, suggesting a marriage prior to this one.8,9 |
Census1900* | Jared and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Douglas Co., Missouri, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 73 yo farmer Jared E & 45 yo wife Amy Smith.10 |
Census1910 | Jared and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Douglas Co., Missouri, as boarders 83 yo Jared and 56 yo Emma Smith in the household of John W Miller. Best guess is Emma is a misunderstood or misspelled Amy.11 |
Death* | Jared died on 15 April 1911 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas.1,9 |
Burial* | He was buried on 28 April 1911 at Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1,9 |

Ethelbert W. "Elbert" Veach1
M, #8999, b. June 1824, d. 1895
Birth* | Ethelbert was born in June 1824 in Tennessee, s/o Silas Veach & Rachel McConnell, brother to Martha W, Eliza, Arminta, and Franklin Brooks Veach. McConnel's date is Jun 1826.1,2 |
Marriage* | He married Nancy H. W. Mack, daughter of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 31 May 1848 in Maury Co., Tennessee. 18758725) m1 Mary Elizabeth Pierce in 1889, m2 Mary Ann Worton 1902.3,4,5,2 |
Census1850* | Ethelbert and Nancy appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. Elbert is a farmer.6,2 |
Census1860 | Ethelbert and Nancy appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dist. Elbert is a farmer.7 |
Census1870 | Ethelbert and Nancy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Goreville PO, T11S R2E, Johnson Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 July 1870, as 46 yo farmer Elbert W & 42 yo Nancy Veach. Four children were listed as living with them: namely, 13 yo Sarah, 9 yo Martha and 3 yo twins Thomas and Rachel Veach. Elbert is a farmer.8 |
Census1880 | Ethelbert and Nancy appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Pct., Williamson Co., Illinois, enumerated 18 June 1880, as 55 yo farmer E W & 53 yo wife Nancy Veach. Their twins 13 yo Thomas and Rachel Veach were listed as living with them. Ebert is again a farmer.9 |
Death* | Ethelbert died in 1895 in Illinois. McConnel's date is Sept 1896.1,10 |
Burial* | He was buried at County Line Cemetery in Creal Springs, Williamson Co., Illinois. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1 |

Nellie Waters1
F, #9000
Marriage* | She married James W. Mack, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 29 May 1867 in Moniteau Co., Missouri.1 |
Census1870* | Nellie and James appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri, enumerated 24 June 1870, as 40 yo lawyer James W & 26 yo Nellie Mack. No children and no known relatives nearby.2 |
Census1880 | Nellie and James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Holden, Johnson Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 June 1880, as 49 yo postmaster James W & 35 yo wife Ellen M Mack. Two boarders are also in the home. On the second page of the enumeration we find another family with different dwelling number but same family number as James & Ellen. Surname is Hartman and wife is 25 yo Fannie, born KY. I don't see how they're related so best guess is the enumerator simply botched the family number.3 |
