Birth*Jacob, son of Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, was born on 16 June 1842 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. The 1900 census says Jun 1843.2,5,6
Census1850Jacob appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, as 8 yo Jacob Heaston.4
Census1860Jacob appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Greenfield Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, as 16 yo Jacob Hiestand.7
Milit-Service*Jacob Franklin Heistand served as a private with Co. F, 17th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War . He was apparently invalided (unclear whether wounded or disease) and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC) where he served with Co. K, 19th Regiment.
Frank applied for an invalid pension on 01 Nov 1886. His widow Mary D Heistand applied for a widow's pension 13 Feb 1929.8,9,10,11
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah Ann Grattis on 20 November 1865 at Jay Co., Indiana. The 1900 census says married 34 years with 0 born and 0 living. My preliminary research suggests their only child was adopted, Emma Hiestand (c1872- ).12
Census1870*Jacob and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wayne Twp., Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 29 June 1870, as 28 yo farm laborer Jacob F & 26 yo Sarah A Hiestand. Jake & Sarah are the 2nd family in dwelling 67, the other being 72 yo William & 80 yo Mary Grattis, likely Sarah's parents.13

Census1920*Jacob and Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Bryant, Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 20 January 1920, as 77 yo Jacob F & 75 yo wife Mary D Heistand.19
Death*Jacob died on 12 October 1926 in Bryant, Jay Co., Indiana, at age 84, of myocarditis. On his death certificate his wife's name is listed as Mollie Heistand. The informant was Daniel Heistand of Bryant, likely Jake's brother.2,5
Burial*He was buried at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Jackson Twp., Jay Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides a bad headstone photo. The only legible parts are Heistand at the top, then Sarah A Heistand, then the rest is useless.5

Eliza Jane Slife1,2

F, #10728, b. circa 1842
FatherHenry K. Slife3 b. c 1820
MotherCatherine Heistand3 b. 10 May 1821, d. 22 Jul 1905
Last Edited19 Jul 2023
Birth*Eliza, daughter of Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, was born circa 1842 in Fairfield Co., Ohio.3
Census1850Eliza appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, as 8 yo Eliza Slyfe.3
Census1860Eliza appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, as 18 yo seamstress Eliza J Slife.4
Marriage*She married John W. Foor on 15 April 1866 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Albert Ellsworth (1867-1940, m. Ella Anetta Stevely), Ida May (1868-1922, lived w/ grandmother Catherine Slife in 1880, m. J William Bates 1922) and William H Foor (1869-1870).1
Census1870Eliza appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Leipsic Village, Putnam Co., Ohio, as a neighbor of her parents Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand.5
Census1870*Eliza and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Leipsic Village, Putnam Co., Ohio, enumerated 20 June 1870, as 28 yo farm laborer John W & 28 yo Eliza Jane Foor. Their children 3 yo Albert E and 2 yo Ida May Foor were listed as living with them.2
CensusLead*A person who might be Eliza appeared on the 1900 censusat Mercer County Infirmary, Jefferson Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio, as 59 yo widowed inmate Jane Slife, born Apr 1841 in Ohio, none born & none living. Obvious isses include her surname which barring a divorce would be Foor, and the zero born which is contradicted by the 1870 census.6

FatherHenry K. Slife3,2 b. c 1820
MotherCatherine Heistand3,2 b. 10 May 1821, d. 22 Jul 1905
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*David, son of Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, was born on 11 December 1845 in Fairfield Co., Ohio.4,2
Census1850David appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, as 4 yo David Slyfe.2
Milit-Service*David D. Slife served as a private with Co. B, 197th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War from 14 March 1865 to 31 July 1865.
One problem with the Soldier Grave Registrations record is it lists his next of kin as Joseph Slife and we have no one of that name currently known.5,4,6
Census1900David appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio, as 55 yo widower brother David Slife in the household of his brother Samuel Slife; as 38 yo day laborer Samuel G Slife.7
Census1900David appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of St. Marys City, Auglaize Co., Ohio, as a neighbor of his brother-in-law & sister Frank Cunningham and Susan C. Slife.8
Census1910*David appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio, as 65 yo widower self-employed shoemaker David Slife in the household of 43 yo odd job laborer John & 40 yo wife Flora B Ferrell.9
Marriage*He married Isabelle Colts on 18 November 1916 in Auglaize Co., Ohio. Both parties were widowed.3
Death*David died on 26 November 1917 in St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio, at age 71. The Deaths & Burials dB isn't worth much, saying only 1917 in Ohio.4,10
Burial*He was buried on 27 November 1917 at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio.4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 19 July 2023 re another David Slife. There are two men named David Slife, sons of Henry & Catherine Slife, in Ohio in this time frame. The other David's parents were born in Pennsylvania, though occasional records say Ohio for one or the other. Sorting out which David married which women is difficult.
The other David is probably the one buried at Hancock Cemetery, Licking County, Find A Grave no. 40790753. He had brothers Henry (1815-1893) and Samuel (unk-1856) who are buried in the same cemetery. There's also a Catherine Stockberger Dumbauld Slife (1814-1888) in that cemetery. Find A Grave says she was Henry's wife. Based on the 1860 census of Licking, OH, it appears he had other siblings named Charles, Lydia and Frederick.
The J&G Slife tree at Ancestry claims our David (s/o Henry K Slife & Catherine Heistand) m1 Sarah Ann Nichols, m2 Jane Hill, m3 Susan Springer, m4 Louisa King and m5 Isabelle Coats. Only the marriage record to Isabelle coats is unambiguous in that it names David's parents.
Compare that to the FamilySearch tree for David Slife (s/o Henry K Slife & Catherine Heistand, ID no. KCYM-6DN). That tree claims David m1 Louisa King and m2 Isabelle Johnson. Note no wives in common between this and the Ancestry tree! The FS tree shows David living with parents Henry & Catherine (both of Pennsylvania) in the 1870 census. That alone makes this entire tree suspect so I'm assuming the David in that tree shows incorrect parents and is not ours.
I'm not entering the other purported wives of David at this time. But for what it's worth, here's what the draft tree looks like:
David Daniel Slife
+m1 Sarah (Ann or C) Nichols, m. 1867 Auglaize, OH
Emma L & Elijah Louis Slife
(+ Amos Goodwin, Sarah's m2)
Effa Goodwin
(+ John Poumade, Sarah's m3)
6 children by prior wife have Find A Grave memorials
+m2 Jane Hill, no marriage date or location purported
+m3 Susan Springer, m. 1875 Mercer, OH
Clara & L. Delbert Slife
+m4 Louisa King Hartzog, m. 1890 Auglaize, OH
+m5 Isabelle Colts, m. 1916 Auglaize, OH. This one is reliable.
(+ David Johnson, Isabelle's prior to Slife)
Flora, Dora, Lillie & Mary Johnson.

Census1860John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, as 7 yo John Slife.1
Census1870John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Leipsic Village, Putnam Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, as 17 yo John W Slife.2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 July 2023 re Find A Grave. Our John is probably not the one with Find A Grave memorial 203238258. That John is claimed to be a son of Henry Slife & Catherine Stockberger of Pennsylvania. The Henry & Catherine of Ohio are easily and frequently confused with the Henry & Catherine of Pennsylvania.
Here are two scenarios for John Slife supported by the census records:
A) In 1880 in St. Marys we have a 25 yo John, 35 yo wife Rosa, children 4 yo Margaret, 3 yo Rosa, 2 yo John and 0.1 yo Jewett Slife. All born OH except Rosa was VA.
B) John m. Margaret A Hines in 1874 in Auglaize County. In 1900 we find, again in Auglaize Co., 47 yo John, 46 yo Margaret, issue 18 yo Lawrence E, 13 yo Lovie A and 10 yo Noah B Slife. Again all born in OH except wife Margaret who is VA same as Rosa! Could Margaret and Rosa be the same person and Rosa's age in 1880 is off by 10 years? Probably not as Margaret shows 6 born and 6 living in 1900 and the two censuses clearly show 7 children. In 1910 we find again in Auglaize 57 yo John, 58 yo Margaret and 28 yo son Lawrence.

ResearchNote*Research Note of 22 July 2023 re Another messy Slife. There's a death record at FamilySearch's Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001 database for a Julia E Slife who died 20 Feb 1880. The problem with this record is Julia is marked married, not single. Slife would be a married name, not a maiden name.
There are two marriage records at FS for a 30 Jun 1876 marriage to Isoh Springer in Mercer Co., OH. Neither lists parents' names so there's no way to tell if the woman was our Julia or some other person. Beside, the handwriting seems to say surname Shipe, not Slife, so the indexing is likely messed up.

Johana Louise Dorothea "Dora" Muth1,2,3

Last Edited20 Jul 2023
Birth*Johana was born on 25 March 1868 in St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio, d/o Frederick & Henrietta Muth. The correct order of her many names is unclear.1,4
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Samuel Slife, son of Henry K. Slife and Catherine Heistand, on 2 October 1890 at Auglaize Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Louetta Freda Slife (1891-1962, m1 Julius C W Blumemhorst 1908, res. Hartford City 1938, res. w/ mother in Lima 1943, m2 Edgar Poe Clapper 1944).5,2
Marr-Divorce*Johana was divorced from Samuel Slife from 2 October 1890 to 1893. Sam is divorced on his death certificate. Dora is married 7 years in the 1900 census. The divorce must have happened sometime after Sam & Dora's marriage and before Dora and Sig were married in 1892-1893.6,7
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Sigel Asberry "Sig" Donovan between 1892 and 1893. Find A Grave claims 1894. The 1900 census shows married 7 years with 3 born and 3 living. One twist is son Arthur Bishop Donovan's headstone which shows him born in 1888. Almost certainly he was the son of Sig and a currently unknown m1 wife. The 1910 census confirms this was the 2nd marriage for both but shows them married just 10 years suggesting they were married in 1900. That doesn't work with birthyears of 1896 and 1897 for their two sons.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Arthur Bishop (1888-1953, res. Lima 1938), Melvin G (1896-1977, WWI veteran, m. Frances M Coolidge) and Carl Constantine Donovan (1897-1976, m. Nola M Collins, res. Lima 1938).8,7,4

Their children 13 yo Arthur B, 4 yo Melville G and 2 yo Constantine C Dunavan were listed as living with them.7
Census1910Johana and Sigel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of German Twp., Allen Co., Ohio, enumerated 27 April 1910, as 48 yo truck farmer Sigel A & 42 yo wife Dorothea Donovan. Their children 14 yo Melville and 12 yo Constantine Donovan were listed as living with them.9
Census1920Johana and Sigel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of American Twp., Allen Co., Ohio, enumerated 6 January 1920, as 56 yo truck farmer S A & 51 yo wife Dorothy Donovan. Their children 23 yo Melville G and 22 yo Constantine C Donovan were listed as living with them.10
Census1930Johana and Sigel appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of American Twp., Allen Co., Ohio, enumerated 8 May 1930, as 68 yo truck farmer Sig A & 62 yo wife Dorthy L Donnovan. Their children 34 yo crane operator Melvin G and 32 yo farmer Constance C Donovan were listed as living with them.11
Census1940*Johana appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of American Twp., Allen Co., Ohio, enumerated 27 April 1940, as 72 yo widow nursery operator Dora Donovan. Her 44 yo nursery helper son Melval Donovan was listed as living with her.12
Death*Johana died on 27 April 1943 at her home in Lima Rte. 4, Allen Co., Ohio, at age 75, 'after an illness of eight years'.13,14,4
