Joe Gray Burcham1
M, #7713, b. 18 September 1886, d. 22 April 1964
Birth* | Joe, son of Joseph B. Burcham and Mary Emily "Mollie" Palmer, was born on 18 September 1886 in Windsor, Henry Co., Missouri.3,2,4 |
Census1900 | Joe appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Windsor Twp., Henry Co., Missouri in the household of his parents, Joseph B. Burcham and Mary Emily "Mollie" Palmer, as 13 yo son Joseph G Burcham.5 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Annie Parks Young on 26 March 1905. My preliminary research suggests their children were Mary Velma (1905-1967, m1 Robert L Gregory, m2 Charles H Brockway), and Robert Lee Burcham (1908-1998). Joe marrying Emma Tayes before Annie's death suggests this marriage ended in divorce. In Annie's 1940 census enumeration w/ son Robert she was originally marked M(arried) but someone has scratched out the M and overwritten what appears to be D.2,3 |
Census1910* | Joe and Annie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Windsor Twp., Henry Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 May 1910, as 22 yo Joseph G & 26 yo Annie P Burcham. Their children 4 yo Mary V and 2 yo Robert L Burcham were listed as living with them.6 |
Census1920 | Joe and Annie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Windsor Twp., Henry Co., Missouri, enumerated 10 February 1920, as 34 yo Joe Gray & 36 yo Anna P Burchan. Their children 14 yo Mary Velma and 11 yo Robert L Burcham were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1930 | Joe and Annie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Windsor Twp., Henry Co., Missouri, enumerated 15 April 1930, as 43 yo Joe G & 47 yo Annie P Burcham. Their son 21 yo Robert L Burcham was listed as living with them.8 |
Marriage* | Their second marriage was to Emma Cleo Tayes in 1942. Emma had previously married Fnu Purham.2,9 |
Death* | Joe died on 22 April 1964 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at age 77, due to a heart attack.2,4 |

William H. Helsley1,2
M, #7715, b. circa 1830, d. 3 August 1876
Birth* | William, son of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, was born circa 1830 in Virginia. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo to corroborate the date given of 04 Jul 1826. Of the five censuses in which we find William only the 1870 suggests 1826. The others all point toward 1830.2,3 |
Census1830 | William is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1830 Federal Census of Western Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia.4 |
Census1840 | William is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1840 Federal Census of Shenandoah Co., Virginia, though this is likely one bracket too young by a year or so.5 |
Census1850* | William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 58, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 20 yo farmer William Helsley in the household of his grandfather 85 yo farmer Peter Helsley. William's parents and 6 siblings live two doors above.2 |
Census1850 | William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 58, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as a neighbor of his parents Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick.6 |
Marriage* | He married Phoebe Ann Lindamood on 27 June 1852 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia. My preliminary research suggests their children were John Lemuel (1853-1926, m1 Martha Ellen Jordan 1879, m2 Mary C Nesselrodt 1895), Sarah Jane Virginia (1855-1922, m. Benjamin H Dellinger 1876), Rebecca (1856-1911, m. Isaac N Foltz 1873), Thomas C (1858-b1907, m. Mary C "Mollie" Nossett 1879), George Peter (1861-1946, m. Mary J Sine 1884), Joseph M (1865-1866) and Charles Edward Helsley (1874-1936, m. Hannah F. Fadely 1893). There's a contradictory article in the 26 Apr 1907 issue of Shenandoah Herald that reads in part, W. P. Helsley was called to Conicsville on Wednesday by the death of his mother Mrs. Phoebe Helsley... None of the children I've listed above has the initials W P. Perhaps it was a typo and really meant George P Helsley. At any rate I've found no other evidence for a son W. P. Helsley. In her Confederate widow's pension app Phoebe claimed they were married 16 Jun 1851 near Conicsville..1,7,8 |
Census1860* | William and Phoebe appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hamburg Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 September 1860, as 30 yo wagoner William & 24 yo Phebi Helsley. Their children 6 yo John, 5 yo Sarah, 3 yo Rebecca and 1 yo Thomas Helsley were listed as living with them, as well as 50 yo Christina Lindamood.9 |
Milit-Service* | William H. Helsley served with Co. B, 2nd Regt., Col. Mann Spitler's Virginia Militia during the Civil War ca. 1861-1865. He was a POW at Fort Delaware for 13 months between 1861 and 1865.10,11 |
Census1870 | William and Phoebe appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ashby Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 29 July 1870, as 44 yo laborer William & 37 yo Phebe A Helsley. Their children 17 yo John L, 15 yo Sarah J, 14 yo Rebecca, 12 yo Thomas C and 10 yo George P Helsley were listed as living with them.12 |
Death* | William died on 3 August 1876 in Conicville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. In her Confederate widow's pension app Phoebe claimed William was born 08 Aug 1873 at Conicville.3,10 |
Burial* | He was buried at Saint Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conicville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.3 |
