Lucinda Ann Armentrout1,2,3

F, #6698, b. 8 April 1831, d. 6 February 1923
Last Edited12 Mar 2024
Birth*Lucinda was born on 8 April 1831 in Virginia, d/o David Armentrout & Catherine Kyger. Her death certificate confirms her father but not her mother.2,1
Marriage*She married Cpl. Nathaniel Armentrout on 12 April 1854 in Rockingham Co., Virginia. My preliminary research suggests their children were George Edward (1855-1933, m. Mary Alice Hooper, m. Allie Irene Orebaugh), Lucy Catherine (1856-1910, m. Lewis R Zirkle 1876, res. Forestville 1905), David Henry (1857-1858), Sarah Frances Armentrout (1859-1886, m. Joseph A McKelvey 1880), John Lemuel (1861-1876) and James Monroe Armentrout (1865-1905).4,1
Census1860*Lucinda and Nathaniel appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Mount Jackson, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 36 yo merchant Nathaniel & 29 yo Lucinda Armentrout in the household of 74 yo farmer George Lindamood. Nate's 10 yo daughter Elizabeth from his prior marriage was living with them as well as three children from his marriage to Lucinda - 5 yo George, 3 yo Lucy and 1 yo Sarah Armentrout.3
Census1870Lucinda and Nathaniel appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 23 August 1870, as 44 yo machinist Nathaniel & 39 yo Lucinda Armentrout. Their children 15 yo George E, 13 yo Lucy C, 10 yo Sarah F, 8 yo John L and 5 yo James M Armentrout were listed as living with them.5
Census1880Lucinda and Nathaniel appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 22 June 1880, as 54 yo machine shop (manager or proprietor, it says only 'runs a machine shop') Nath & 49 yo wife Lucinda Armentrout. Their children 21 yo Sarah F and 14 yo James M Armentrout were listed as living with them.6
Census1900*Lucinda appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Lee Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 69 yo widowed mother Lucinda Armentrout in the household of her son 34 yo miller James Armentrout.
Lucinda shows 1 born and 1 living but that doesn't work. Lucinda's deceased husband's m1 Josephine Caroline Andrick died in 1852. There are three children in the 1860 census born after 1852 - George, Lucy and Sarah. In 1870 we add two <10 yo children - John and James. So 5 born with at least 3 still living appears to be the correct tally.7
Death*Lucinda died on 6 February 1923 in Lee Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, at age 91, of paralysis. Death cert says 06 Feb, Find A Grave says 08 Feb.1,2
Burial*She was buried on 8 February 1923 at Saint Lukes United Church of Christ Cemetery, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides headstone photo. Death Records calls this County Line Cemetery.1,2

Their children 18 yo William E, 16 yo Mary F, 14 yo Eugene, 13 yo John L, 12 yo Samuel D, 8 yo Barbara C, 7 yo Charles, 6 yo Casper, 4 yo James and 2 yo Andrew C Andrick were listed as living with them. The children through Samuel were by Joseph's deceased m1 Elizabeth Hess.7
Census1880Mary and Joseph appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 18 June 1880, as 56 yo miller Jos & 50 yo wife Mary Andrick. Their children 19 yo Barbara C, 15 yo Casper and 12 yo Andrew Andrick were listed as living with them, as well as 1 yo nephew Arthur Zirkle.8
Census1900*Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Lee Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 13 June 1900, as 68 yo widow Polly Andrick. Her son Casper, his m2 wife Nellie and son live next door above.9
Death*Mary died on 2 November 1914 at home of her son Casper in North River, Augusta Co., Virginia, at age 83, of interstitial nephritis. Find A Grave claims she died in Shenandoah County but her death certificate has the location I've used. Her obit in Staunton Daily Leader says the home of her son Casper near Cave Station.10,5,3
Burial*She was buried at Forestville Cemetery in Forestville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.3

Jacob H. Rinker1

M, #6701, b. between 1827 and 1829
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Jacob was born between 1827 and 1829 in Virginia, date range based on 1850, '70 and '80 censuses.2,3,4
Marriage*He married Julia Ann Andrick, daughter of Joseph Andrick Sr. and Rebecca Caroline Carsh, on 16 April 1850 in Shenandoah Co., South Carolina. My preliminary research suggests their children were Charles Barton (1851-1921, m. Eliza E Lnu),
Joseph (1854- ), George Absalom (1855-1925, m. Aramantha Virginia "Amy" Zirkle 1876), Rebecca "Annie" (1856-1925, m. Jacob B Olinger 1874), Morris Franklin (1861-1918, m. Lydia Margaret Williams 1883), Virginia Alice "Jennie" (1862-1947, m. Noah Good) and stillborn male Rinker (1867-1867).
FamilySearch trees (MRTP-BHX) claims these additional children for whom I've found no evidence: Arthur (1852- ), Claude (1854- ), John (1856- ) and Maude Rinker (1860- )..5,1
Census1850*Jacob and Julia appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 58, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 15 October 1850, as 23 yo Jacob H & 22 yo Julia A Rinker.2
Milit-Service*Jacob H. Rinker served as a Private with Co. G, 136th Virginia Militia Infantry during the Civil War , ca. 1861-1865.6
Census1870Jacob and Julia appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 26 August 1870, as 45 yo laborer Jacob & 43 yo Julia A Rinker. Their children 18 yo Charles, 15 yo George, 12 yo Rebecca, 10 yo Virginia and 6 yo Morris Rinker were listed as living with them.3
Census1880Jacob and Julia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Ashby Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 29 June 1880, as 55 yo farmer Jacob & 51 yo wife Julia Ann Rinker. Their children 19 yo Morris F and 16 yo Virginia A Rinker were listed as living with them.4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 30 May 2023 re Find A Grave. I believe that the Jacob Harvey Rinker at Find A Grave Memorial no. 22908654 (1830-1917) is not this man. Evidence includes,
A joint obit for Jacob H & wife Rachel Rinker in the Richmond Times-Dispatch (Richmond, VA, 14 Mar 1917) says they had been married over 60 years. That clearly conflicts with our Jacob's marriage to Julia A Andrick in 1850
Virginia, Death Records, 1912-2014 shows that Jacob as s/o Casper Rinker & Isabel Copeland.
Ancestry's Cross Family Tree claims he was s/o Heinrich "Henry" Rinker & Mary Eavy but none of the sources cited in the tree support that claim, nor do they contradict it.

Sarah "Sallie" Helsley1,2

F, #6705, b. 26 May 1820, d. 4 November 1901
FatherFrederick Helsley1 b. c 1795, d. 5 Oct 1854
MotherElizabeth Andrick1 b. c 1795
Last Edited4 Jun 2023
Birth*Sarah, daughter of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, was born on 26 May 1820 in Virginia.3,1
Census1830Sarah is probably one of the two females age 5 to 9 listed in the household of her father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1830 Federal Census of Western Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia.4
Census1840Sarah is probably one of the two females age 15 to 19 listed in the household of her father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1840 Federal Census of Shenandoah Co., Virginia.5
Census1850Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 58, Shenandoah Co., Virginia in the household of her parents, Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, as 28 yo Sarah Helsley.1
Marriage*She married Abraham "Abram" Strickler on 18 September 1851 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Sarah shows 2 born and 2 living. Clearly one of her children was son John Samuel Strickler who married Mary E Ludwig in 1873. Whether she had one or two daughters is unclear. In the 1860 census she shows 0.1 yo daughter Mary, in the 1870 it's 10 yo daughter Virginia and in 1880 it's 18 yo Mary (as sister to HOH brother John). If it's two daughters where is Mary in 1870? Conclusion is her name was Mary Virginia and the claim of 2 born with 2 living is accurate.
My research therefore suggests their children were John Samuel (1852-1916, m. Mary E Ludwig 1873) and Mary Virginia "Mollie" Strickler (1860-1946, m1 Arthur Noah Polk 1897, m2 William Polk from whom she was divorced at her death).2
Census1860*Sarah and Abraham appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cabin Hill Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 28 September 1860, as 36 yo farmer Abraham & 40 yo Sarah Strickler. Their children 7 yo John & 0.1 yo Mary Strickler were listed as living with them.6
Census1860Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cabin Hill Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as a neighbor of her brother-in-law & sister Henry Mumaw and Isabella Helsley.7
Census1870Sarah and Abraham appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Madison Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 11 July 1870, as 50 yo farmer Abraham & 55 yo Sarah Strickler. Their children 18 yo John & 10 yo Virginia Strickler were listed as living with them.8
Census1880Sarah and Abraham appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Madison Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 60 yo farmer father Abraham & 62 yo mother Sarah Strickler in the household of their 28 yo farmer son John & his 28 yo wife Mary Strickler. John's 18 yo sister Mary Strickler was also in the home.9
Census1900*Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Madison Dist., west part, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 76 yo widowed mother Sarah Strickler in the household of her 47 yo farmer son John S & his 47 yo wife Mary E Strickler. John's 40 yo sister Mary J and her husband Arthur N Polk live next door below.10
Death*Sarah died on 4 November 1901 at age 81.3
Burial*She was buried at Saint Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conicville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.3

Birth*Levi, son of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, was born circa 1826 in Virginia.1

Marriage*He married Isabella Lindamood on 16 October 1851 at Buck Hall in near Harrisonburg, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. My preliminary research suggests their children were Elizabeth "Bettie" (1851-1931), Christina Ellen (1852-1926, m. Lorenzo Heishman 1871), Mary Catherine (1856- , m. William Wetzel 1874), Frederick (1857-1857, birthyear conflicts), James M (1858-1929, m. Julia Ann Foy 1878), George William (1859-1931, m1 Sarah E Lutz, m2 Emma E Cook), Joseph D (1863- , m.      Two other alleged children who never show up in a census record were Jefferson Davis (1861- , m. Sarah E Lutz 1884) and John Henry Helsley (1872-1937, m. Minnie V Jordan 1895). In the 1900 census Isabella shows 12 born with 11 living. I have 12 without Jeff Davis and John Henry. Note there are four Levi Helsley's in VA with Confederate military records.
Isabella's Confederate pension app says she and Levi were married Nov 1851.3,4,5

Birth*Sybilla, daughter of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, was born on 28 April 1828 in Virginia. First name variously Sevilla, Sylvia, Sylbia and Seiva.1,5,2
Census1830Sybilla is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1830 Federal Census of Western Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia.6
Census1840Sybilla is probably one of the two females age 10 to 14 listed in the household of her father, Frederick Helsley, in the 1840 Federal Census of Shenandoah Co., Virginia.7
Census1850Sybilla appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 58, Shenandoah Co., Virginia in the household of her parents, Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, as 23 yo Seiva Helsley.2

Census1860Sybilla "Sylvia" Helsley appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Columbia Furnace Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 32 yo Sevilla Helsley in the household of her grandmother Anna Barbara Fultz. It's surprising that Sybilla is listed with the surname Helsley rather than Frye. She presumably married Frye before 1856 when daughter Julia Alice Frye was born. Perhaps the marriage ended poorly and she reverted to her maiden name; as 86 yo Barbara Andrick.5
