Catherine "Caty" Smith1

FatherAdam Smith Sr.2,3,4 b. c 1750, d. 1807
MotherHannah J. Jackman3,4
Last Edited30 Nov 2023
Birth*Catherine, daughter of Adam Smith Sr. and Hannah J. Jackman, was born in 1776 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia.4,5
Marriage*She married Jacob Andereck Sr., son of Johann Friedrich (Frederick) Andereck Sr. and Anna Catherine Butzeberger, on 14 May 1793 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Select Marriages, Find A Grave & Mason all claim 7 May which was the bond date (see VA County Marriages for image). Andereck is very reliable so I'm sticking with his date of 14 May for the marriage. Chapman says Jacob's wife name was Rebecca.2,6,7,4,8,9
MoveCatherine and Jacob moved their residence from Shenanhoah County to Fairfield County, Ohio between 1804 and 1807. Newsletter claims Lydia was in on this move but her birthyear in Find A Grave suggests otherwise. Andereck's year is 1807, Mason's is 1804.10,11
Census1820*Catherine "Caty" appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 31-42211 as >45 yo Caly Andreck. No idea who all these young ones are. Even the oldest doesn't match up with any of Jacob & Caty's children.12
Death*Catherine died before 1823, based on fact her five yougest children each had a guardian appointed that year. Mason claims 29 Oct 1875 in Hancock Co., OH, at age 89.13,4

FatherJacob Andereck Sr.1 b. 28 Sep 1771, d. 15 Dec 1819
MotherCatherine "Caty" Smith1 b. 1776, d. b 1823
Last Edited28 Feb 2024
Birth*Jacob, son of Jacob Andereck Sr. and Catherine "Caty" Smith, was born between 1808 and 1810 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. His guardian bond dated 1823.2,3,4
Estate-ProbateRachel, Jacob, Rebecca, Daniel and Lydia was listed as a minor child in the the probate record of his father Jacob Andereck Sr. circa 1820 at Fairfield Co., Ohio; Mason writes, "Jacob's Heirs as listed in The Probate records of Fairfield County Ohio. minors-Daniel, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Lydia Andricks. Adult children-Nancy, David and Catherine. Source: Patsy Kishler, Fairfield County Genealogical Society".
It's unclear why his other living children were not listed.5
Marriage*He married Nancy Ramsey before 1837, based on birthyear of eldest child listed by Mason. I consider the five children listed here as highly speculative but worthy of further research.6,7,8
Census1840Jacob appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Madison Twp., Franklin Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 00002-10001 as 20-29 yo J Andricks.9
Census1850*Jacob and Nancy appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Groveport, Franklin Co., Ohio, enumerated 13 November 1850, as 43 yo grain merchant Jacob & 33 yo Nancy Andrick. Their son Samuel Vanmeter was listed as living with them.10
Marr-Divorce*Jacob was divorced from Nancy Ramsey at Franklin Co., Ohio, on 5 May 1859. Mason, extracting from Donald M. Schlegel's book Franklin Co., Ohio, divorces before 1870 writes that there are two divorce records for Nancy and Jacob Andereck. First is in Oct. 1846, shows marriage date of Oct. 1836, saying he left her 'about 3 months ago. 5 children, all deceased...' He was ordered to pay her alimony. 'Cause dismissed May 9 1848'. The second record is dated 5 May 1859, says married in Franklin Co. circa 1850. He is absent and she is informed he is living in California. There's a son, Samuel V., age 7. In the Feb. term of 1860 she is granted a divorce and her maiden name of Ramsey is restored. This begs the question did he marry two different Nancys and get divorced from each, or is this just a messy record?.6
Census1860*Jacob appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Placerville Twp., El Dorado Co., California, enumerated 3 July 1860, as 48 yo farmer Jacob Andrick. Two laborers, 25 yo John Kane & 36 yo James Dyer were listed as living with him.11
Residence*Jacob resided in Placerville Twp., El Dorado Co., California, on 25 December 1865.12
Marriage*His second marriage was to Sarah Fowler on 25 December 1865 at El Dorado Co., California. Sarah's m1 was Gilman Greeley on 11 Nov 1830. Jacob was her m2.12,13
ResidenceJacob resided in Redwood Twp., Santa Clara Co., California, on 31 May 1867. Jacob was a 54 yo laborer from Ohio.14
Census1870*Jacob and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Redwood Twp., Santa Clara Co., California, enumerated 23 July 1870, as 59 yo day laborer Jacob & 61 yo Sarah Aubereck.15
Estate-Will*Jacob Andrick Jr. left a will dated 12 June 1871 at Los Gatos, Santa Clara Co., California. It was proved 06 Mar 1872 in Santa Clara County.16
Burial*He was buried. Find A Grave has a Jacob Andrex buried at Groveport, Franklin, Ohio (memorial no. 53542004). but his birthyear is 1823, not 1808-1810.Mason claims Groveport is his burial location but this looks like the wrong Find A Grave memorial to me.17,2

Marriage*Her first marriage was to R. D. Stuphen on 25 December 1827 at Fairfield Co., Ohio.6
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Jacob Henderlick on 17 December 1837 at Fairfield Co., Ohio. Smith's date is 4 Dec but County Marriages clearly shows the marriage date as 17 Dec.7,8
ResearchNote*Research Note of 25 February 2024 re 1840 census. There's a enumeration in the 1840 Federal census of Liberty, Fairfield, Ohio for Jacob Hunterlick (Henterlick) listing 21001-000001. I surmise this is Jacob & Rachel with three sons from her m1 to Stuphen. Next door above is 60-69 yo Jacob Henterlick with female same age. These two I suspect are our Jacob's parents.

Marriage*She married George Sarber on 5 August 1834 in Franklin Twp., Franklin Co., Ohio.6,3
Census1840Lydia is probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, George Sarber, in the 1840 Federal Census of Union Twp., Putnam Co., Ohio.7
Census1850*Lydia and George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 24 October 1850, as 39 yo farmer Geo & 34 yo Lydia Sarber. Their children Mary Catherine, Hiram and Albert were listed as living with them.8

Census1880Lydia and George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 69 yo farmer George & 64 yo Lidia Sarber. Sixteen yo grandaughter Mary Morgan and 13 yo grandson Curtis Sarber were listed as living with them. George & Lydia's son Albert and his family live next door above. It's possible that George & Lydia were living with Albert because the enumerator did not show Heads of Household or dwelling or family numbers.11

Burial*She was buried at Mentone Cemetery in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.3

Elizabeth Andereck1

F, #2654, b. circa 1795, d. after 19 April 1824
FatherJacob Andereck Sr.2 b. 28 Sep 1771, d. 15 Dec 1819
MotherCatherine "Caty" Smith1 b. 1776, d. b 1823
Last Edited27 Apr 2024
Birth*Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Andereck Sr. and Catherine "Caty" Smith, was born circa 1795 in prob. Virginia. For the two parental relationships Andereck cites "deed records, guardian bonds and the accounting of his [Jacob's] estate..." She was not among the minor children of Jacob & Catherine for whom guardian bonds were executed in 1823.3,4,5,6
MoveIsaac, Elizabeth, David and Hannah joined the move of her parents from Shenanhoah County to Fairfield County, Ohio between 1804 and 1807.7,8
Death*Elizabeth died after 19 April 1824, based on fact she sold land received from her father's estate this date.9
ResearchNote*Research Note of 14 August 2023 re dearth of sources. I've found no original sources for Elizabeth. Smith claims she married Isaac Decker in 1816 in Ohio.
FamilySearch trees are all messed up. Her parents (father Jacob's ID K2VG-CG2) list a daughter Elizabeth (ID LHH9-7FS) but Elizabeth's entry shows her parents to be George Andrick & Barbara Ann Voltz, not Jacob & Catherine. Go figure. This Elizabeth purportedly married Brodrick Frederick Helsley in 1818 in Shenandoah County, but none of the three sources cited are able to link Elizabeth to Jacob & Catherine, or any other parents for that matter.1,6

MotherCatherine "Caty" Smith2 b. 1776, d. b 1823

Birth*David, son of Jacob Andereck Sr. and Catherine "Caty" Smith, was born on 4 August 1801 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia. He was not among the minor children of Jacob & Catherine for whom guardian bonds were executed in 1823.1,3
MoveIsaac, Elizabeth, David and Hannah joined the move of his parents from Shenanhoah County to Fairfield County, Ohio between 1804 and 1807.4,5
Estate-ProbateCatherine, Nancy and David was listed as an adult child in the the probate record of his father Jacob Andereck Sr. circa 1820 at Fairfield Co., Ohio; Mason writes, "Jacob's Heirs as listed in The Probate records of Fairfield County Ohio. minors-Daniel, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Lydia Andricks. Adult children-Nancy, David and Catherine. Source: Patsy Kishler, Fairfield County Genealogical Society".
It's unclear why his other living children were not listed.5
Marriage*He married Lydia Ann Poats before 1833, based on birthyear of eldest child listed by Find A Grave. Seven children are listed by Find A Grave.1
Census1840*David appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Clinton, Seneca Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 20001-11001 20-29 yo as David Andricks.6
Move*David and Lydia moved their residence from Seneca Co., Ohio to Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in 1844. Mason says David appears on the tax index of Henry County for 1845.7
Census1850David and Lydia appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Washington, Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 27 November 1850, as 47 yo farmer David & 36 yo Lydia Andreck. Their children Mary Ann, Catherine, Henry C., Mary Magdalene, Luke, Adaline, Jacob, Lydia Ann and Rebecca Jane were listed as living with them, as well as one laborer, 27 yo Abram Snider.8
ResearchNote*Research Note of 27 May 2017 re 1850 census. I strongly suspect that Lydia Ann, Rebecca Jane, and the Jacob of the 1850 census are not the children of David & Lydia. Jacob & Rebecca may be the issue of David's brother Daniel (who died 1859). Lydia Ann may also somehow be related.
In the 1850 census the first six children are listed in order of age from 17 yo down to 5 yo as follows, Mary Ann, Catherine, Henry, Magdalene, Luke, and Adaline. Then we get Jacob (14 yo), and on the next page Lydia Ann (3 yo), Rebecca (0.4 yo). It seems possibly significant that the enumerator started over. This census is dated November 1850 but Jacob pretty clearly died in June 1850. What's up with that?8

Census1860David and Lydia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington, Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 8 June 1860, as 58 yo farmer David & 45 yo Lydia A Andrick. Their children Henry C., Mary Magdalene, Luke, Adaline, Lydia Ann and Rebecca Jane were listed as living with them.9
Census1860David Andrix appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, as a neighbor of his son-in-law & daughter Frederick Obenour and Catherine Andrix. David, his wife Lydia, and six of their children were living four doors below Fred & Catherine.10
Death*David died on 18 September 1860 in Henry Co., Ohio, at age 59.1,7
Burial*He was buried at Texas Cemetery in Texas, Henry Co., Ohio. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

BioNote*Biography Note: Andereck newsletter: "The family descent from 'Frederick Sr.' and Anna Butzeberger Andereck is sufficiently confirmed that we have no doubts about the foregoing line. But, the proof that Johann Friedrich is the son of Hans Andereck of Rumisberg, Switzerland still escapes us. Johann Friedrich Andereck is believed to be our immigrant ancestor, arriving on the ship, Friendship, in the autumn of 1740 at the age of 2. It is from Johann Friedrich that an Andrick family line descends as well all Anderecks. A son, George, translated the name from its Swiss-German from to be 'Andrick' and George's heirs have used that spelling since. The son, Christian, apparently died young. We have found no record of him after his birth and christening in Pennsylvania; he in not mentioned in Johann Friedrich's will (whereas, the other sons are). We possess photographs of the family Bible of Johann Friedrich which detail the famly of Johann Friedrich and Anna... Jacob is thought to be the only child to be born in Virginia; Johann Friedrich resided in Pennsylvania Colony at least through 1769."1

This appears to have been an attachment to a DAR lineage application. Note in margin of photocopy reads, "This did not copy well - the copy from DAR is poor also in the margin but it is Thomas, Bartholomew and John were brothers." Perhaps a GSU film of a DAR record found at FHL?
