J. B. McCarty1
?, #9182, b. between 1870 and 1873, d. 1877
Birth* | J., child of John B. McCarty and Mary O. Torian, was born between 1870 and 1873. This date range based on fact there's no J B in any of the family's censuses, 1850-1880. He could be one of the males under 5 in 1840 but his absence in 1850 and beyond make this very unlikely if his 1877 death year is correct. His father died in 1872 providing the upper limit of 1873.2 |
Death* | J. died in 1877.1 |

Marriage* | She married Samuel Arbuckle on 18 March 1812 in Christian Co., Kentucky. The license issued the same day with service performed by Samuel Means. Of the three children I show (Esther, George and Edward) only George is iffy.Other children claimed by FSTrees, all w/o source citations, are Alexander (1823- ), Mary Elizabeth (1830- ) and Arabella Arbuckel (1831- ). I find no primary evidence for any of the last three.4 |

David P. Palmer1
M, #9190, b. 6 April 1816, d. 16 May 1890
Birth* | David, son of Edward Palmer and Rebecca Patton, was born on 6 April 1816 in Kentucky. A closer reading of this headstone shows me a D rather than a J for the first initial. Considering David's wife Susan, his son David H and wife Nancy J are buried in this cemetery I think it's save to say 'J.P.' is David. The sources linking David to his parents (FSTrees) are pathetic and need a major upgrade.2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Susan Jane Funk on 29 May 1844 in Morgan Co., Illinois. Reed's date is 27 May. My preliminary research suggests their children were Margaret A (1845- ), Albert Stark (1847-1902, m. Phoebe Kennedy), David H (1849-1911, m. Nancy J Cutright), Phillip Coffman (1851-1915, m. Florence L Kline), and Olivia Eve Palmer (1857- ).1,4,5 |
Census1850* | David and Susan appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Hancock Co., Illinois, enumerated 7 September 1850, as 33 yo David P & 27 yo Susan J Palmer. Their children 5 yo Margaret A, 3 yo Albert S, and 1 yo David H Palmer were listed as living with them. Also in the home was unknown person 23 yo Nicholas Davis.6 |
Census1860 | David and Susan appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cooperstown Twp., Brown Co., Illinois, enumerated 8 July 1860, as 43 yo D P & 38 yo Mrs S Palmer. Their children 15 yo Margt, 13 yo Albert, 11 yo David, 8 yo Philip, and 3 yo Olivia Palmer were listed as living with them. Death* | Susan died on 13 November 1889 at age 67. Her Find A Grave memorial says 13 Nov but the stone is quite unreadable in the included photo. At least there is a stone so I'll go with Find A Grave rather than Reed's 17 Nov date.1,2 |

Catherine "Katie" Heistand1,2
F, #9193, b. 2 February 1854, d. 2 March 1935
Birth* | Catherine, daughter of Methuselah Heistand and Nancy Weatherholt, was born on 2 February 1854 in Ohio. On 12 Jun 2023 Kate's Find A Grave memorial still incorrectly identifies her father as Benjamin Lapp. I sent revision suggestion and reasoning. Among the reasons is her mother didn't marry Lapp until 26 years after Kate's birth.3,2 |
Census1860 | Catherine appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Methuselah Heistand and Nancy Weatherholt, as 6 yo Catharine Heistand.2 |

Robert Palmer1
M, #9194, b. 7 May 1823, d. 30 May 1905
Birth* | Robert, son of Edward Palmer and Rebecca Patton, was born on 7 May 1823 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky.2,3 |
Census1830 | Robert is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his mother, Rebecca Patton, in the 1830 Federal Census of Morgan Co., Illinois.4 |
Move* | Robert moved his residence from Illinois to Hangtown (later Placerville), El Dorado Co., California in 1850, where he took up placer gold mining in the Sierras.3 |
Move | Robert moved his residence from Placerville to Whiskey Flat (later Kernville), Kern Co., California in 1860. Morgan writes, During 1862 with three other prospectors he located and developed placer mines at Claraville. This attempt proved successful.3 |
Marriage* | He married Rose Glennon on 14 June 1866 in San Francisco Co., California. Multiple sources claim 12 children but this is not supported by the census record. You will find both Lee (1873- ) and Rose Lee (1874-1957) listed as children. Also Rebecca Patton and Patton. Rebecca is a 1 yo female in 1880 but a 19 yo male in 1900. Same person, sloppy enumerator. However the 1900 census does show Rose with 12 born and 10 living so best guess is two kids were born and died between censuses. My preliminary research suggests their children were Robert (1867-1949), Margaret (1868-1960, m. Wm E Wear), Richard (1869-1894, who has a Find A Grave memorial), Edward (1871-1952), Mary Elizabeth (1872-1956), Rose Lee (1874-1957), Walter (1876-1941), Hester Irene (1878-1925), Rebecca Patton (1879-1982!), and Ellen "Nellie" Palmer (1885-1943, m. Charles M Beatty). All of their birth years are supported by censuses. Their death years are only listed by Trees so are very iffy.1,5,3 |
Census1870* | Robert and Rose appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Twp. 3, Kern Co., California, enumerated 25 July 1870, as 46 yo Robert & 27 yo Rosie Palmer. Their children 2 yo Robert, 2 yo Margaret, and 1 yo Richard Palmer were listed as living with them, as well as 33 yo Richard Glennon, possibly a brother to Rose. Robert and Richard are both miners.6 |
Census1880 | Robert and Rose appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Havilah Twp., Kern Co., California, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 58 yo R & 40 yo Rose Palmer. Their children 13 yo Robert, 12 yo Margaret, 11 yo Richard, 9 yo Edward, 7 yo Mary E, 5 yo Rose, 3 yo Walter, 2 yo Hettie, and 1 yo Rebecca Palmer were listed as living with them, along with one boarder. Robert is a stock raiser.7 |
Census1900 | Robert and Rose appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Twp. 1, Kern Co., California, enumerated 26 June 1900, as 77 yo Robert & 60 yo Rose Palmer. Their children 32 yo Robert, 29 yo Edward, 23 yo Walter, 22 yo Hettie, 19 yo son Patton, and 14 yo Nellie Palmer were listed as living with them, along with two boarders.8 |
Death* | Robert died on 30 May 1905 in Hot Springs Valley, Kern Co., California, at age 82.3 |
Burial* | He was buried at Palmer Family Cemetery in Bodfish, Kern Co., California. Joint headstone photo w/ wife Rose and son Richard available at Find A Grave.2 |
BioNote* | Biography Note: Robert's Find A Grave memorial reads, 'Robert Palmer was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. His mother was Rebecca Patton, the dau. of Col. Mathew Patton, an officer under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. When Robert was a toddler, his parents Edward and Rebecca moved the family to Morgan Co., Illinois. In 1850 he traveled to California by horseback. He was one of nine survivors who arrived in California from a large immigrant group that left St. Joseph, MO. His trek to California led him through the South Pass and the Humbolt River Valley. He arrived in Placerville, CA on 23 Aug 1850. While mining for gold, he was involved in an Indian Battle near the Yosemite Valley. He is buried with a piece of an Indian arrow still in his shoulder - a souvenir from Yosemite. On 14 June 1866 Robert traveled to San Francisco to "pick up" his new Irish bride, Rose Glennon, dau. of John Glennon and Mary Brady (of Kells, Meath Co., Ireland)... In 1878, Robert and Rose settled on 282 acres of land that lay along Erskine Creek in Hot Springs Valley, Kern Co., CA. They had twelve children. Robert shares his headstone with Rose and their son Richard Palmer who died in 1894 at age 25 from Typhoid.2 |

Elias Hollingsworth1
M, #9197, b. 24 August 1823, d. 4 February 1901
Birth* | Elias was born on 24 August 1823 in Indiana. FSTrees (Hester Ann Palmer, (1826-1930), ID LH2F-5N9) claims 1822.1 |
Marriage* | He married Hester A. Palmer, daughter of Edward Palmer and Rebecca Patton, on 12 October 1848 in Iowa Co., Wisconsin. My preliminary research suggests their children were Frances (1852-1951), Caroline Augusta (1853-1937, m. Clarence V Renshaw), Landon M (1857-1941), Dorcas (1859-1957), David Palmer (1860-1939, m. The death years are per FSTrees and are very iffy.2,3,1 |
Census1860* | Elias and Hester appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Farmersburg Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa, enumerated 27 June 1860, as 35 yo physician Elias & 34 yo Esther Hollingworth. Their children 18 yo Frances, 15 yo Augusta C, 13 yo Landon M, 11 yo Dorman M, 9 yo David P, 5 yo Cynthia A, and 3 yo Lydia L Hollingsworth were listed as living with them.5 |
Census1880 | Elias and Hester appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of National, Clayton Co., Iowa, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 56 yo physician Elias & 54 yo Hesther A Hollingsworth. Their children 15 yo Marcella and 13 yo Lydia Hollingsworth were listed as living with them, as well as 5 yo grand-niece Bernice Overstreet.6 |
Census1900* | Elias appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Warren Twp., Sanborn Co., South Dakota, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 76 yo widower landlord E Hollingsworth. Next door find his 38 yo son David with wife Sarah and five children. Also another of Elias's sons, (no age) single Dorman Hollingsworth living with David & Sarah.7 |
Death* | Elias died on 4 February 1901 in South Dakota at age 77. FSTrees (Hester Ann Palmer, (1826-1930), ID LH2F-5N9) claim of 1925 is ridiculous.1 |

Census1840 | He or brother George is probably the male age 20-29 listed in the household of his parents, Hardy Boyd, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.5 |
Marriage* | He married Ann Maria Clark on 4 March 1849 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Six children listed by Bostick, 6 also in Find A Grave. Nannie L Bullock), Robert Boyd (1858-1879), Sallie G Boyd (1860-1861), and Julia Boyd (1862-1862). Fanny Etta is in Bostick's list, but not Julia. Julia is in Find A Grave's list, but not Fanny Etta. Fanny is supported by censuses & KY Births. Julia of course would be missed completely.6,1,2 |

Martha Ann Boyd1
F, #9202, b. 15 August 1824, d. 12 October 1899
Birth* | Martha, daughter of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, was born on 15 August 1824 in Christian Co., Kentucky.2,1 |
Census1830 | Martha is probably one of the two females age 5 to 9 listed in the household of her father, Hardy Boyd, in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.3 |
Census1840 | Martha is probably one of the two females age 15 to 19 listed in the household of her father, Hardy Boyd, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4 |
Marriage* | Her first marriage was to Littleton A. Boyd on 14 January 1841 at Christian Co., Kentucky. Only known child was W. H. Boyd (1844-1926). I have issues with this marriage. There's a KY marriage record and a death record for WH listing parents, but that's all I've found. Martha A Boyd isn't exactly a rare name so question arises is this our Martha? Littleton and WH just vanish. Was it a divorce with WH going with his father? If not, why isn't WH with his mother and her m2 Sam Watkins in the 1860 census. Additional info on this couple in Bostick, p. 88, waiting for interlibrary loan.5,6,1 |
Census1850 | Martha appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Hardy Boyd and Susan Torian, as 25 yo Martha A Boyd.7 |
Marriage* | Her second marriage was to Samuel J. Watkins on 7 January 1856 at Christian Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were Susan A (1856-1886), Charles R (1858-1895), and John H Watkins (1859-1881). The death years aren't confirmed but the birth years do line up well with censuses.8,2 |
Census1860* | Martha and Samuel appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cadiz P.O., Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 14 August 1860, as 31 yo S J & 34 yo Martha A Watkins. Their children 3 yo Susan A, 2 yo Charles R, and 0.6 yo Jnol Watkins were listed as living with them. Also in the home was 17 yo James E Boyd, farm laborer.9 |
Census1870 | Martha and Samuel appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wallonia Pct., Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 12 September 1870, as 41 yo Samuel J & 44 yo Martha A Watkins. Their children 13 yo Susan A, 11 yo Charles R, and 10 yo John H Watkins were listed as living with them. Also in the home one farm laborer.10 |
Census1880 | Martha and Samuel appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Wallonia Dist. 3, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 21 June 1880, as 50 yo S J & 55 yo Martha A Wadkins. Their sons 22 yo Charles R, and 20 yo John H Watkins were listed as living with them. Also in the home are one boarder and one farm laborer.11 |
Death* | Martha died on 12 October 1899 in Kentucky at age 75.2,1 |
Burial* | She was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2 |

Susan Boyd1
F, #9206, b. 1814, d. 10 July 1880
Birth* | Susan, daughter of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, was born in 1814 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Bostick's date is ca. 1827 but that doesn't jive with the census record or her Find A Grave memorial.2,1 |
Census1820 | Susan is probably the female under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Hardy Boyd, in the 1820 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky.3 |
Census1830 | Susan is probably the female age 10 to 14 listed in the household of her father, Hardy Boyd, in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4 |
Marriage* | She married Archibald Gresham on 25 October 1832 in Christian Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were George Hardy (1833-1898, m. Julia A Boydstone), Mary Elizabeth (c1835-1919, m. Fnu Bayston), Susan Jane (1837-1921), John Wilson (1838-1911, m. Frances Gregory), Henrietta Olive (1844-1894), James C (1846-1939, m. Emily K Niergarth), Robert H (1848-1919, m. Martha A Sivley), Louise B (1850- ), Richard Columbus (1852-1925, m. Mary A Farmer), Virginia "Jenny" (1854-1887, m. James H Irvin), Charles Edward (1856-1946, m. Alice E Spencer), and Lucy A Gresham (1858-1931, m. William A Irvin). All but Mary have Find A Grave memorials linked to the parents.5,2 |
Census1840 | Susan is probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her husband, Archibald Gresham, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.6 |
Census1850* | Susan and Archibald appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 August 1850, as 42 yo Archibald & 36 yo Susan Gresham. Their children 16 yo Geo Hardy, 15 yo Mary E, 13 yo Susan J, 10 yo Jno W, 8 yo Harrietta O, 6 yo Jas C, and 2 yo Robert H Gresham were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1860 | Susan and Archibald appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 July 1860, as 56 yo Archibald & 45 yo Susan Gresham. All of their kids were with them: namely, 21 yo John W, 23 yo Susan J, 16 yo Henrietta O, 14 yo James, 12 yo Robert H, 10 yo Louisa B, 7 yo Richard C, 6 yo Virginia, 4 yo Charles E, and 1 yo Lucy A Gresham.8 |
Census1870 | Susan and Archibald appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 30 July 1870, as 63 yo Abram & 59 yo Susan Griffiths. No kidding. But the list of children makes it clear this is Archibald & Susan Gresham. The children living with them were 30 yo Susan, 26 yo Olive, 21 yo Robert, 19 yo Laura (Louise), 18 yo Ruben (Richard), 16 yo Jane (Jenny), 14 yo Charles, and 12 yo Lucy Gresham. Yes there are five significant errors but overall I'm sure this is the family in question. The ages are all very good.9 |
Census1880 | Susan and Archibald appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 June 1880, as 72 yo A & 65 yo Susan Gresham. The children living with them were 42 yo dau Susan J, 30 yo dau Henrietta, and 21 yo son Richard Gresham.10 |

Birth* | Ann was born on 7 August 1826.2 |
Marriage* | She married Edward Boyd Sr., son of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, on 4 March 1849 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Six children listed by Bostick, 6 also in Find A Grave. Littleton A. Boyd1
M, #9210
Marriage* | He married Martha Ann Boyd, daughter of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, on 14 January 1841 in Christian Co., Kentucky. 88, waiting for interlibrary loan.2,3,1 |
