David Smith1

M, #10835, b. circa 1874, d. 11 June 1930
Last Edited13 Mar 2024
Birth*David was born circa 1874 in Ohio.2
Marriage*He married Henrietta Andrix, daughter of Henry C. Andrix and Fidelia Taylor, on 21 April 1883 in Henry Co., Ohio. Ohio Compiled Marriage Index's date is 21 Apr 1858. Clearly that doesn't work given Henrietta 1866 birth. Ohio Marriage Records has the correct date of 21 Apr 1883, and an image of the record.
Married 16 years with 4 born and 2 living in the 1900 cenus.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Henry A Smith (1884-b1900, not in any censuses but birth record confirms parents), Nella "Nellie" Smith (1893-1935, m. C Wade 1914), Dellie Smith (1893- ), and Cloise A "Clovie" Smith (1908- , m Grace M Gladfelter 1930).3,1,4,5
Census1900*David and Henrietta appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Richfield Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated circa 30 June 1900, as 36 yo merchant David & 32 yo wife Henrettie Smith. Their daughters 7 yo Dellie and 7 yo Nellie Smith were listed as living with them, as well as David's 40 yo brother Albirt Smith.2
Census1910David and Henrietta appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Richfield Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 46 yo hardware store merchant David & 42 yo wife Henryetta Smith. Their children 17 yo Nellie & 2 yo son Clovie Smith were listed as living with them. David & Henrietta are in the same household as Henrietta's brother Harry and his family.6
Census1920David and Henrietta appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Richfield Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, at North Hall, enumerated 14 January 1920, as 56 yo retail hardware merchant David & 52 yo wife Henrietta Smith. Their 11 yo son Cloice A Smith was listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.7
Census1930David and Henrietta appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Richfield Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 17 April 1930, as 66 yo hardware store merchant David & 62 yo wife Henrietta Smith. Their 22 yo son Cloyce Smith was listed as living with them.8
Death*David died on 11 June 1930 in West Hope, Henry Co., Ohio. The Hayes Obit Index claims 11 Apr 1930 which clearly does not work with his 17 Apr 1930 census enumeration. The Ohio Death Records image is quite blurry. His death is indexed as 11 Apr 1930 but it looks more like a 6 than a 4 to me, making the date 11 Jun 1930. This works much better with the census.9,1,10

Birth*Kathryn, daughter of Andrew R. Kershner and Mary Magdalene Andrix, was born in 1866 in Ohio.2,1
Census1870Kathryn appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Napoleon P.O., Henry Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Andrew R. Kershner and Mary Magdalene Andrix, as 3 yo Katie Kershner.1
Census1880Kathryn appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in the household of her mother, Mary Magdalene Andrix, as 13 yo Catherine Kershner.3
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Wilder P. Bender on 22 February 1888 at Wood Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Xenia Mae Bender (1888- , m1 David H Messenger Jr 1907, m2 Melvin R Baker 1919), Xenos Kershner Bender (1890- , first name Herivo?), and DeLane Thankful Bender (1892-1968, m. Edward Albert Vogt 1924).
Thankful & DeLane may be two separate people, Thankful born 1892, DeLane 1893. I think it unlikely since Thankful is in two censuses and Delane in none with parents. Thankful has an 1892 birth record; none found for DeLane. DeLane's marriage record clearly shows Wilder & Kathryn as her parents.4
Census1900*Kathryn and Wilder appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Rushsylvania Village, Rushcreek Twp., Logan Co., Ohio, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 43 yo M. E. minister Wilder & 33 yo wife Catherine Bender. Their children 11 yo daughter Xena, 9 yo son Kershner, and 7 yo daughter Thankful Bender were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.5
Census1910Kathryn and Wilder appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Walton Twp., Eaton Co., Michigan, enumerated 20 April 1910, as 54 yo farmer Wilder P & 44 yo wife Kathyrn Bender. Their children 19 yo son Kershner and 17 yo daughter Thankfull Bender were listed as living with them.6
Marr-Divorce*Kathryn was divorced from Wilder P. Bender at Michigan on 25 November 1911.7
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Stephen A. Douglas on 23 April 1922 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.8
Census1930*Kathryn and Stephen appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Rose Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, enumerated 4 April 1930, as 69 yo retiree A Stephen & 63 yo wife Kathryn Douglas.9
Death*Kathryn died in 1931 in Wood Co., Ohio.2

Wilder P. Bender1

M, #10845, b. 1855, d. 1935
Last Edited12 Jan 2024
Birth*Wilder was born in 1855.2
Marriage*He married Kathryn "Katie" Kershner, daughter of Andrew R. Kershner and Mary Magdalene Andrix, on 22 February 1888 in Wood Co., Ohio.
DeLane's marriage record clearly shows Wilder & Kathryn as her parents.1
Census1900*Wilder and Kathryn appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Rushsylvania Village, Rushcreek Twp., Logan Co., Ohio, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 43 yo M. E. minister Wilder & 33 yo wife Catherine Bender. Their children 11 yo daughter Xena, 9 yo son Kershner, and 7 yo daughter Thankful Bender were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.3
Census1910Wilder and Kathryn appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Walton Twp., Eaton Co., Michigan, enumerated 20 April 1910, as 54 yo farmer Wilder P & 44 yo wife Kathyrn Bender. Their children 19 yo son Kershner and 17 yo daughter Thankfull Bender were listed as living with them.4
Marr-Divorce*Wilder was divorced from Kathryn "Katie" Kershner at Michigan on 25 November 1911.5
Death*Wilder died in 1935.2
Burial*He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green, Wood Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.2

Raymond R. Bortel1

M, #10856, b. circa 29 January 1848, d. 2 July 1904
Last Edited5 Feb 2024
Birth*Raymond was born circa 29 January 1848 in Beavercreek, Greene Co., Ohio. Age at death on his headstone appears to read 56y 5m 3d which works out to a birthdate of 29 Jan 1848. He has two Find A Grave memorials which disagree on birthdate and location. One says born Michigan, the other Henry Co., Ohio. The birthdate discrepancy is between Jan 1848 and 30 Jan 1846. If age at death is correct then it was definitely 1848.2,3,4,5,6
Milit-Service*Raymond R. Bortel served with Co. B, 144th (184th?) Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War circa 1862.6
Marriage*He married Lydia Ann Andrix, daughter of David Andrix and Lydia Ann Poats, on 5 December 1866 in Henry Co., Ohio. The 1900 census shows 12 born with 8 living. The 4 deceased children were infant daughters A, B, C, and son Delbert U Bortel. The 8 living were Harvey, George, James, Zelma, Margaret, Catherine, Ada/Mary, and Clifford.
The only potential hiccup in this list is Ada/Mary. She's enumerated as 11 yo Ada M in the 1900 census, suggesting a birthyear ca. 1889. FamilySearch's Ohio, County Births, 1841-2003 dB has a listing for a Mary Bortel, b. 08 Jan 1889 in Henry Co., Ohio, d/o Raymond Bortel and Lydia Hudrix. So Ada Mary Bortel appears to have been her name. You'll find the middle name listed as Mae at times; also Mae Bortel as a separate person. Both are incorrect in my opinion.7,1
Census1870*Raymond and Lydia appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 13 August 1870, as 22 yo day laborer R & 23 yo Lydia Bortel. Their children Harvey Burt and George Washington were listed as living with them.3
Census1880Raymond and Lydia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 2 June 1880, as 32 yo laborer Raymond R & 32 yo Lydia A Bortel. Their children Harvey Burt, George Washington, James A. and Zelma Gay "Zella" were listed as living with them.4
Census1900Raymond and Lydia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 52 yo day laborer Raymond R & 52 yo wife Lydia A Bartell. Their children Addis Mae "Ada", Clifford Raymond and Catherine Belle were listed as living with them.8
Census1900Raymond appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, as a neighbor of his son-in-law & daughter Darius Morehead and Margaret May "Maggie" Bortel, who lived two doors below.9
Death*Raymond died on 2 July 1904 in Texas, Henry Co., Ohio.5
Burial*He was buried at Texas Cemetery in Texas, Henry Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with Delbert U Bortel (1874-1875).5

Birth*Harvey, son of Raymond R. Bortel and Lydia Ann Andrix, was born on 21 August 1867 in Texas, Henry Co., Ohio.2,4
Census1870Harvey appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Raymond R. Bortel and Lydia Ann Andrix, as 2 yo Harvey Bortel.4
Census1880Harvey appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Raymond R. Bortel and Lydia Ann Andrix, as 13 yo son Harvey Bortel.5
Marriage*His first marriage was to Alice Gertrude Flohre on 11 September 1894 at Clark Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their only children were Paul Flohre Bortel (1895-1957) and Raymond F Bortel (c1899- ).6
Milit-Service*Rev. Harvey Burt Bortel served as a Private with Co. M, 3rd Regt., Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War circa 1898. An invalid's pension was approved to be paid to his m3 widow Jessie A Bortel on 26 Mar 1927.7,2
Census1900*Harvey and Alice appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brainord, Crow Wing Co., Minnesota, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 32 yo (occ unreadable) Hervy(?) B & 25 yo Alice G Bortel. Their children 4 yo Paul F and 1 yo Raymond F Bortel were listed as living with them.8
ResearchNote*Research Note of 2 February 2024 re FSTrees. Harvey's FamilySearch Trees entry (ID L5Y3-LK7) claims he m2 Luella A. Carter on 28 Mar 1904 in Wright Co., Minnesota. No evidence is provided in support of this claim. Ancestry's Minnesota, U.S., Marriages Index, 1849-1950 dB has no record of this marriage. FamilySearch's Minnesota Marriages, 1849-1950 dB also has no matching record.

Marriage*His second marriage was to Nora Coleman on 15 September 1906 at Defiance Co., Ohio. Nora's surname was Hanenkrath when she married Harvey.9
Census1910*Harvey and Nora appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Couderay, Sawyer Co., Wisconsin, enumerated 13 April 1910, as 42 yo clergyman & farmer Harvey B & 27 yo wife Norah C Bortel. Harvey's 14 yo son Paul F Bortel was listed as living with them.10
Marriage*His third marriage was to Jessie Avis Patten on 19 December 1914 at Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. My preliminary research suggests their children were Theodore Raymond Bortel (1916-1997, injured in crash that killed his father, m. Rose E Beetham 1943), Harvey Burt Bortel Jr (1919-1981, perhaps injured in crash that killed his father, contradictory news reports, m. Mary Lee Hamby), and Jessie Flanders Bortel (1921-2012, perhaps m. Mary Madeline Baker, m. Billye C Espejo 1968).11
Census1920*Harvey and Jessie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Burnsville Twp., Dakota Co., Minnesota, enumerated 11 February 1920, as 52 yo truck farmer Harvy B & 38 yo wife Jessie A Bortel.
