Abraham "Abram" Strickler1,2
M, #7094, b. 5 October 1823, d. 25 August 1899
Birth* | Abraham was born on 5 October 1823.1,3 |
Marriage* | He married Sarah "Sallie" Helsley, daughter of Frederick Helsley and Elizabeth Andrick, on 18 September 1851 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Sarah shows 2 born and 2 living. Clearly one of her children was son John Samuel Strickler who married Mary E Ludwig in 1873. Whether she had one or two daughters is unclear. In the 1860 census she shows 0.1 yo daughter Mary, in the 1870 it's 10 yo daughter Virginia and in 1880 it's 18 yo Mary (as sister to HOH brother John). If it's two daughters where is Mary in 1870? Conclusion is her name was Mary Virginia and the claim of 2 born with 2 living is accurate. My research therefore suggests their children were John Samuel (1852-1916, m. Mary E Ludwig 1873) and Mary Virginia "Mollie" Strickler (1860-1946, m1 Arthur Noah Polk 1897, m2 William Polk from whom she was divorced at her death).4 |
Census1860* | Abraham and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cabin Hill Dist., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 28 September 1860, as 36 yo farmer Abraham & 40 yo Sarah Strickler. Their children 7 yo John & 0.1 yo Mary Strickler were listed as living with them.5 |
Milit-Service* | Abraham "Abram" Strickler served as a Private with Co. C, 7th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War between 1861 and 1862. Abram enlisted at Edinburg, VA on 15 Jun 1861. He was discharged 16 Jul 1862.1 |
Census1870 | Abraham and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Madison Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, enumerated 11 July 1870, as 50 yo farmer Abraham & 55 yo Sarah Strickler. Their children 18 yo John & 10 yo Virginia Strickler were listed as living with them.6 |
Census1880 | Abraham and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Madison Twp., Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as 60 yo farmer father Abraham & 62 yo mother Sarah Strickler in the household of their 28 yo farmer son John & his 28 yo wife Mary Strickler. John's 18 yo sister Mary Strickler was also in the home.7 |
Death* | Abraham died on 25 August 1899 at age 75.1,3 |
Burial* | He was buried at Saint Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conicville, Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.3,1 |

Sarah Jane Derrickson1
F, #7095, b. between 1849 and 1850, d. from 19 October 1883 to 8 March 1898
Birth* | Sarah was born between 1849 and 1850 in Delaware, d/o Cornelius Derrickson per King. There's an 1860 census record for L H & Jane Derickson in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex, Delaware which shows a 10 yo daughter Sarah J living with her parents. This doesn't jive with King who is usually correct. No resoluton yet.1 |
Marr-Bond* | Sarah Jane Derrickson and William Asbury Vandegrift posted a marriage bond on 7 March 1878 at New Castle Co., Delaware. William and Leonard C Vandegrift (likely his uncle) were bondsmen. King shows a marriage date of 14 March but I've found no corroborating evidence.2,1 |
Death* | Sarah died from 19 October 1883 to 8 March 1898, date range bracketed by daughter Emma's birth and husband William's m2 to Georgia Sharp. It's possible William and Sarah divorced but I see no evidence of that. On the other hand I find no death record for Sarah anytime anywhere.3 |

Anna H. Vandegrift1,2
F, #7096, b. 26 August 1880, d. 3 August 1927
Birth* | Anna, daughter of William Asbury Vandegrift and Sarah Jane Derrickson, was born on 26 August 1880. King says her middle name was Hannah but I've found no evidence supporting more than the letter H. Find A Grave provides year only.3,2 |
Marriage* | She married Clarence J. Tomlin between 1902 and 1903. Married 7 years with 1 born & 1 living in the 1910 census. Ancestry's New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Index, 1901-2016 database gives a date of 1902. King says 06 Dec 1903. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Hilda (c1908- ) Tomlin.4,1,2,5 |
Census1910* | Anna and Clarence appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Woodbury, Gloucester Co., New Jersey, enumerated 23 April 1910, as 28 yo carpenter Clarence Jr & 29 yo wife Anna H Tomlin. Their 2 yo daughter Hilda B Tomlin was living with them.5 |
