MotherMary Magdalena Heistand2 b. 16 Apr 1835, d. 22 Jul 1909
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Alvin, son of Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, was born in 1860 in Ohio.4,2
Census1870Alvin appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 9 yo Washington A Masters.2
Census1880Alvin appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 19 yo son Alvin W Masters.1
Marriage*His first marriage was to Amanda M. Hildreth on 2 February 1887 at Indiana.5,4
Marriage*His second marriage was to Phebe E. Tailor on 2 October 1889 at Indiana.6,7
Marriage*His third marriage was to Mary Jane "Jennie" Stratton on 22 June 1893 at Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ottis Alonzo (1894-1921, m. Minnie May Hissong 1915 Michigan), Robert Wesley (1895-1956, m. Jeanette Katherine Rydorp 1921 Ohio), Lewis Abbit (1897-1954, m. Lottie Louise Stein 1922 Ohio), John Franklin (1900-1901, died age 1y 8m 21d), Virgie Lavina (1901-1983, m. Charles Alonzo Sharp 1926 Michigan), Theodore Milton (1904-1983, m. Helen Marcy Ball 1926 Ohio), Sarah Ardeline (1906-1969, m. Morgan Clarence Place 1930 Michigan) and Willard Stratton Masters (1908-1957, m. Lillian Gertrude Thompson).
Jennie's obit in Ludington Daily News notes she leaves behind her husband, 5 sons and 2 daughters. Those are correct numbers. The surviving children were Ottis, Robert, Lewis, Theodore, Willard, Virgie and Sarah Masters.8,9
Census1900*Alvin and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Greenville, Montcalm Co., Michigan, enumerated 15 June 1900, as 39 yo farm laborer Alvin & 32 yo wife Jennie Masters. Their sons 6 yo Ottis, 4 yo Robert, 2 yo Lewis and 0.6 yo John Masters were listed as living with them.10
Census1910*Alvin appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Home Twp., Montcalm Co., Michigan, enumerated 11 May 1910, as 49 yo odd jobs laborer Alvin W & 42 yo wife Jane Masters. Their children 16 yo Ottis A, 14 yo Robert W, 12 yo Lewis A, 8 yo Virgia L, 6 yo Theodore N, 4 yo Sarah A and 2 yo Willard W Masters were listed as living with them.11
Census1920Alvin appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio, as 59 yo scale factory painter widower lodger Alvin Masters in the household of 47 yo John & 44 yo Emma Murray. Alvin's sons 21 yo scale factory machinist Louis and 15 yo scale factory stock chaser Theodore Masters were listed as living with him.12
Census1930Alvin appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, enumerated 14 April 1930, 69 yo widower auto factor sweeper lodger Alvin Mastes, 38 yo Robert A & 31 yo Francis Clark.
Note there's another Washington Masters in Eden Twp, Wyandot, Ohio in the 1930 census, 48 yo farmer, wife Lula and children Agnes, Russell, Violet and Madeline.13
Death*Alvin died in 1933.4
Burial*He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 4 July 2023 re city directory problem. There's a disconcerting entry in the 1928 Minneapolis city directory for a Mary J Masters, widow of Alvin. Mary's middle initial is wrong; our Mary is distinctly dead in 1914; Alvin is a widower in both the 1920 and 1930 censuses.14

Ella Z. Masters1,2

F, #10683, b. January 1864, d. 11 December 1938
FatherMatthias "Matthew" Masters2 b. 22 Aug 1833, d. 7 Mar 1902
MotherMary Magdalena Heistand2 b. 16 Apr 1835, d. 22 Jul 1909
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Ella, daughter of Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, was born in January 1864 in Ohio.3,2
Census1870Ella appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 6 yo Ella Masters.2
Census1880Ella appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 16 yo daughter Ella Z Masters.4
Marriage*She married Newlove G. Maskey on 16 January 1895 in Wyandot Co., Ohio. License dated 15 Jan. The 1910 census confirms married 15 years with 1 born and 1 living.
My preliminary research suggests their only child was Ross Wert Maskey (1898-1976, m. Clara Maskey, occ. switchman in 1930).1,5,6
Census1900*Ella and Newlove appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio, enumerated 21 June 1900, as 34 yo carpenter Newlove G & 36 yo wife Ella Z Maskey. Their 2 yo son Ross W (indexed N) Maskey was listed as living with them.3
Census1910Ella and Newlove appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Nevada Village, Wyandot Co., Ohio, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 44 yo carpenter Newlove G & 44 yo wife Ella Z Maskey. Their 11 yo son Ross W Maskey was listed as living with them.6
BioNote*Biography Note of between 1910 and 1915: It's possible Newlove & Ella were divorced after the 1910 census and before 10 Jun 1915. This idea based on a marriage record in Ancestry's Ohio, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1774-1993 database for a marriage on 10 Jun 1915 in Coshocton, Ohio, for Newlove G Maskey & Hettie A K H B B Doncaster, of England. Newlove's parents were Eli Maskey & Nancy Wert. Note the Wert surname which matches Newlove & Ella's son Ross's middle name. Additional evidence suggesting this is our Newlove is fact his occupation in the marriage record is carpenter, matching both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and that he shows one prior marriage.7
Residence*Ella resided at 434 W. Grand Ave. in Lima, Allen Co., Ohio, between 1927 and 1930.8,9
Death*Ella died on 11 December 1938 at Lima Hospital in Lima, Allen Co., Ohio, at age 74. Find A Grave claims 14 Dec 1938 but the headstone reads simply 1938.10,11,12
Burial*She was buried on 14 December 1938 at Nevada Cemetery in Nevada, Wyandot Co., Ohio.13
ResearchNote*Research Note of 6 July 2023 re Find A Grave. There's a bizarre Find A Grave memorial for Ella Z West Maskey, no. 64622534. It shows Ella married to Newlove Grant Maskey (1866-1924) in 1895. Ohio County Marriages confirms an 1895 marriage for Newlove G Maskey to Ella Z Masters, not Ella Z West. Find A Grave also claims the Ella of this memorial to be the daughter of Abel West and Rachel Severance rather than Masters & Heistand. The primary evidence (censuses and Ohio Marriage Records) supports the genealogy I've shown.12,1

Census1880John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 2 yo son John M Masters.2
Census1900John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Knox Twp., Jay Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, as 22 yo farm laborer son John M Masters.5
ResearchNote*Research Note of 6 July 2023 re his name. Unfortunately the name John Masters was as common as dirt. John apparently remained single and as far as I can tell never lived with any of his family after 1900. The following are possible census enumerations for John: 1910, Knox Twp, Jay, OH, 33 yo boarder, odd jobs laborer. 1920, Detroit, lodger, 42 yo foundry worker. 1930, Eden Twp, Wyandot, OH, 52 yo HOH, private estate gardener. 1940 and 1950 are too iffy to list.

Death*John died on 20 March 1965 at his home in Crawford Co., Ohio, at age 87.6
Burial*He was buried on 23 March 1965 at Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.6,7

Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Mary was born on 2 December 1867 in Indiana, d/o Louis Stratton & Julia Starr.4
Marriage*She married Alvin Washington Masters, son of Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, on 22 June 1893 in Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ottis Alonzo (1894-1921, m. Minnie May Hissong 1915 Michigan), Robert Wesley (1895-1956, m. Jeanette Katherine Rydorp 1921 Ohio), Lewis Abbit (1897-1954, m. Lottie Louise Stein 1922 Ohio), John Franklin (1900-1901, died age 1y 8m 21d), Virgie Lavina (1901-1983, m. Morgan Clarence Place 1930 Michigan) and Willard Stratton Masters (1908-1957, m. Lillian Gertrude Thompson).
Jennie's obit in Ludington Daily News notes she leaves behind her husband, 5 sons and 2 daughters. Those are correct numbers. The surviving children were Ottis, Robert, Lewis, Theodore, Willard, Virgie and Sarah Masters.1,5
Census1900*Mary and Alvin appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Greenville, Montcalm Co., Michigan, enumerated 15 June 1900, as 39 yo farm laborer Alvin & 32 yo wife Jennie Masters. Their sons 6 yo Ottis, 4 yo Robert, 2 yo Lewis and 0.6 yo John Masters were listed as living with them.2

Newlove G. Maskey1

M, #10689, b. between 1865 and 1866, d. 31 May 1925
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Newlove was born between 1865 and 1866 in Ohio. Find A Grave claims 10 Jun 1866 in Osceola, OH, but the headstone reads simply 1866. The 1900 census says June 1865. County Marriages simply confirms he was at least 21 yo in 1895.1,2,3
Marriage*He married Ella Z. Masters, daughter of Matthias "Matthew" Masters and Mary Magdalena Heistand, on 16 January 1895 in Wyandot Co., Ohio. License dated 15 Jan. The 1910 census confirms married 15 years with 1 born and 1 living.
My preliminary research suggests their only child was Ross Wert Maskey (1898-1976, m. Clara Maskey, occ. switchman in 1930).1,4,5
Census1900*Newlove and Ella appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio, enumerated 21 June 1900, as 34 yo carpenter Newlove G & 36 yo wife Ella Z Maskey. Their 2 yo son Ross W (indexed N) Maskey was listed as living with them.2
Census1910Newlove and Ella appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Nevada Village, Wyandot Co., Ohio, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 44 yo carpenter Newlove G & 44 yo wife Ella Z Maskey. Their 11 yo son Ross W Maskey was listed as living with them.5
BioNote*Biography Note of between 1910 and 1915: It's possible Newlove & Ella were divorced after the 1910 census and before 10 Jun 1915. Additional evidence suggesting this is our Newlove is fact his occupation in the marriage record is carpenter, matching both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and that he shows one prior marriage.6
Residence*Newlove resided at 375 N. State St. in Marion, Marion Co., Ohio, on 30 May 1925. This obit mentions a surviving wife but does not name her.7
Death*Newlove died on 31 May 1925, of a ruptured appendix. As of 06 July 2023 Find A Grave claims 31 May 1924 in Marion, OH. The headstone reads simply 1925.7,3
Burial*He was buried on 2 June 1925 at Nevada Cemetery in Nevada, Wyandot Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.7,3

Birth*Dennis, son of Andrew M. "Andy" Buxton and Delilah Heistand, was born on 6 January 1876 in Wyandot Co., Ohio.3,5,2
Census1880Dennis appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Crane Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Andrew M. "Andy" Buxton and Delilah Heistand, as 5 yo son Dennis Buxton.6
Census1900Dennis appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Andrew M. "Andy" Buxton and Alverta D. "Alverty" Buxton, as 24 yo farm laborer son Dennis Buxton.7
Marriage*He married Mary Rettie Feltis on 3 November 1901 in Crawford Co., Ohio. The Obits dB claims 13 Nov but has other serious errors so is to be taken lightly.
My preliminary research suggests their children were James Edward Wayne (1904-1986, m. Ruth M Markley 1927, res. Kenton, OH 1939 & 1978), Charles Correll (1908-1970, m. Cleora M Omwake 1930, res. Ashland, OH 1939) and Roscoe Ashby Buxton (1910-1998, m. Ruth Jordan 1931 in KY, res. Benton, OH 1939, res. Prospect 1978).8,9
Census1910*Dennis and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Texas Twp., Crawford Co., Ohio, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 34 yo farmer Denis & 28 yo wife Rettie Buxton. Their children 5 yo Wayne and 1.5 yo son Correl C Buxton were listed as living with them.10
Census1920Dennis and Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Texas Twp., Crawford Co., Ohio, enumerated circa 9 January 1920, as 44 yo steam railroad fireman Dennis & 38 yo wife Mary Buxton. Their children 15 yo Wayne, 11 yo son Charles C and 9 yo Roscoe A Buxton were listed as living with them.11
Census1930Dennis and Mary appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Texas Twp., Crawford Co., Ohio, enumerated 14 April 1930, as 54 yo electric crane operator Dennis & 48 yo wife Rettie Buxton. Their sons 21 yo Correl and 19 yo Roscoe Buxton were listed as living with them.12
Death*Dennis died on 21 April 1939 in Benton, Crawford Co., Ohio, at age 63, of Bright's Disease. The Obituaries 1860-2004 obit has multiple errors. Unfortunately FamilySearch does not say which newspaper the obit appeared in and I'm unable to currently find it at Newspapers.com. The obit claims he was 81 yo when he died, suggesting a birthyear of 1858. That year doesn't work at all with the census record, his Find A Grave memorial and other sources. His obit in The Galion Inquirer correctly notes he was 63 yo at death.13,5,2,9
Burial*He was buried at Benton (aka Texas Twp.) Cemetery in Benton, Crawford Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with wife Rettie.2

Her FamilySearch Trees entry (ID KCHB-Y3C) claims without source citation that she was born in Middlepoint, Van Wert, Ohio.
Her age of 14 yo in the 1870 census makes no sense.2,3
Census1870Surinda appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eden Twp., Wyandot Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Jacob Heistand and Susannah Ellen Brown, as 14 yo Sarenda V Heistand.3

Last Edited18 Jul 2023
Birth*Catherine was born circa 1820 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. Surname spelled Gearhart in some records.3
Marriage*She married Michael Heistand, son of Jacob Heistand III and Susannah Andereck, on 12 November 1840 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. The Heistand Family Tree at Ancestry claims Michael m1 Susannah Welsh and that she was the mother of John Wesley (1844-1934). Clearly nonsense since they show Michael's m2 Catherine Gierhart as mother of Emma (1841-1923). I find no evidence for this alleged m1.
Michael's FamilySearch Trees entry (L4MS-88V) shows the marriage to Catherine as his m1, but also an m2 to Frances Biddle in 1850. No evidence is supplied in support.2,3
Census1850*Catherine and Michael appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, enumerated 13 August 1850, as 30 yo carpenter Michael & 30 yo Catherine Heaston. Their children Emily, Jacob Franklin, John Wesley and Daniel were listed as living with them. Michael's parents live next door.3

Census1870Catherine and Michael appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Greenfield Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, enumerated 26 July 1870, as 50 yo lumber manufacturer Michael & 50 yo Catharine Hiestand. Their son Elisha was listed as living with them.5
Census1880Catherine and Michael appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Havensport Village, Fairfield Co., Ohio, enumerated 24 June 1880, as 56 yo laborer Michael & 59 yo Catharine Hiestand.6

Birth*Emily, daughter of Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, was born on 13 April 1841 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. Her FamilySearch Trees entry (K4XW-5XC) claims middle name was Catherine and provides 22 sources none of which support it. Find A Grave & the Powell Cook tree at Ancestry allege her name was Emma and her nickname "Emily" but neither provides any evidence in support. Emma is typically a nickname for Emily, not the other way around.3,4,1
Census1850Emily appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, as 9 yo Emily Heaston.1
Census1860Emily appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Greenfield Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, Michael Heistand and Catherine Gierhart, as 17 yo seamstress Emily Hiestand.5
Marriage*She married Jesse B. Shimp on 6 June 1861 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Laura (c1861- , m. Benjamin J Kimble 1880), George Brinton (1863-1951, m. Elizabeth Lillian "Lida" Burk 1890), Charles Emerson (1865-1936, m. Virginia Sarah Holt 1894), Thomas Wallace (1867-1940, m. Ella Elizabeth Sheward 1893), Valentine T (1869-1944, m1 Ida May Williams 1894, m2 Clara Constance Pyle 1898, m3 Bertha A Rickard 1905), James Alonzo (1871-1912, m. Lizzie Elinor Beagle 1890), Clara Eleanor (1875-1949, m. John Elmer Flauding 1900), Roena Belle (1876-1972, m. Levi Lamdon Gilpin 1899), Margaret G "Maggie" (c1879- , m. Charles A "Bert" Bone 1910) and Leona Grace Shimp (c1885- , m. Thomas Wilbur McCartney 1921).6,7,4
Census1870*Emily and Jesse appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wabash Twp., Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 16 June 1870, as 38 yo farmer Jesse B & 26 yo Emily Shimp. Their children 9 yo Laura, 7 yo George, 5 yo Charles, 3 yo Thomas and 1 yo Valentine Shimp were listed as living with them.8

Their children 17 yo George, 15 yo Charley, 13 yo Thomas, 11 yo Valentine, 9 yo Alonzo, 5 yo Belle, 7 yo Clara and 0.8 yo Margaret Shimp were listed as living with them.9
Census1900Emily and Jesse appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 18 June 1900, as 68 yo farmer Jesse B & 58 yo wife Emma Shimp. Their daughters 20 yo Maggie M and 15 yo Leona G Shimp were listed as living with them.10
Death*Emily died on 23 February 1910 in Beavercreek Twp., Jay Co., Indiana, at age 68, of nephritis.3,4
Burial*She was buried at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Jackson Twp., Jay Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with husband Jesse and an unlabeled family photo.3,4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 15 June 2023 re 1920 census. There's an enumeration begging an explanation for 59 yo George (born IL) & 54 yo Lillian F Shimp with 79 yo widowed mother Emma Shimp (born PA). Our Emily was born OH and her son George likely born OH or IN. Our George's wife is purported to be Lillian E Burk. Coincidence or surname typo for mother Emma?11
