Laura A. Farson1,2

F, #7120, b. 5 July 1855, d. 1 January 1922
Last Edited30 Dec 2022
Birth*Laura was born on 5 July 1855 in Delaware.1
Marriage*She married Joseph Wilson Vandegrift, son of Wilson E. Vandegrift and Mary Sipple Downs, between 1888 and 1890. My preliminary research suggests their only children were Howard John Farson (1883-1962, m. Beulah Hudson ca. 1913) and Frank Wilson Vandegrift (1892-1922). Howard is usually listed as a step-son but I find no prior marriage for Laura and the Farson surname would be unlikely unless she had married a cousin. In at least one record he's listed as adopted. My guess is he was the son of one of Laura's brothers.
Married 11 years in the 1900 census, 20 years in 1910.3,4
Census1900*Laura and Joseph appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 38 yo farmer Joseph & 44 yo wife Larah A Vandegrift. Their children 16 yo stepson Howard Farson & 7 yo son Frank Vandegrift were listed as living with them.3
Census1910Laura and Joseph appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 49 yo farmer Joseph W & 54 yo wife Laura A Vandegrift. Their children 17 yo son Frank W & 26 yo stepson Howard J Farson were listed as living with them.4
Census1920Laura and Joseph appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 28 January 1920, as 58 yo farmer Joseph W & 64 yo wife Laura A Vandegrift. Their 28 yo son Frank W Vandegrift, his wife Beulah and son John were listed as living with them.5
Death*Laura died on 1 January 1922 in Worcester Co., Maryland, at age 66.1
Burial*She was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland. Find A Grave provides photo of her headstone.1

FatherThomas Jamison1 b. 1 Sep 1807, d. 12 Dec 1864
MotherMary Ann Vandegrift1 b. 24 Jan 1819, d. 9 Oct 1862
Last Edited13 Jan 2023
Birth*Edgar, son of Thomas Jamison and Mary Ann Vandegrift, was born on 6 April 1851 in Delaware. Vandegrift says 6 Apr 1853. Headstone backs King with 1851. We'll go with that year for now.1,2
Census1860Edgar appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of his parents, Thomas Jamison and Mary Ann Vandegrift, as 6 yo Edgar Jameson.3
Estate-WillEdgar was named an heir in the will of Thomas Jamison, his father, dated 13 March 1863 at Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, receiving a one-fifth share of the residual estate which was considerable.4,5
Census1870Edgar appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, as 17 yo Edgar Jamison in the household of his brother-in-law John T. McWhorter; as 25 yo speculator Jno T & 21 yo Laura McWhorter.6
Marriage*He married Josephine White Lyle on 21 October 1877. In the 1900 census Josephine shows 6 born with 3 living, married 24 years which jives with King's marriage date.
My preliminary research suggests their surviving children were Pauline (1877-a1899),Vesta Lyle (1880-1948, m1 James D Bastian 1901 Philadelphia, m2 Charles E Pomeroy 1937 Philadelphia, divorced 1941 in FL, died in CA) and Edgar Jamison (1885-a1899).
FamilySearch claims without source citations that the three children who died before the 1900 census were Katherine (1878-b1901), Lelia R (1882-b1901) and Lillian Jamison (1883-b1901). I've found no actual evidence supporting these last three names.1,7
Census1880*Edgar and Josephine appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 25 yo gentleman Edgar & 23 yo wife Josephine Jamison. Their children 3 yo Pauline & 0.4 yo Vesta Jamison were listed as living with them. Edgar was already afflicted with consumption (tuberculosis). Josephine's health was 'delicate.8
Estate-Will*Edgar Jamison left a will dated 20 April 1886 at Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware, naming his brother Oliver executor and guardian of his minor children. His wife Josephine was to receive all his personal property, sisters Agnes and Laura $1,000 each, with the real estate managed and sold as necessary to support and educate his children until they reached 21 years of age.9
Death*Edgar died on 1 May 1886 at home of his brother-in-law Charles H McWhorter in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware, at age 35, of consumption. King says 1885 as does Find A Grave, but there's no headstone image. The Morning News & Vandegrift show the date here.10,2,1
Estate-ProbateEdgar's will was proved at New Castle Co., Delaware, on 6 May 1886 when John Aikens & George C Nims(?) attested to his will's provenance.9
Burial*He was buried at Saint Georges Cemetery in Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware.11,1

F, #7132, b. 25 October 1854, d. 5 December 1930
Last Edited12 Jan 2023
Birth*Josephine was born on 25 October 1854 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, d/o James Lyle & Catherine Binkert.1
Marriage*She married Edgar Jamison, son of Thomas Jamison and Mary Ann Vandegrift, on 21 October 1877.
I've found no actual evidence supporting these last three names.3,4
Census1880*Josephine and Edgar appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 25 yo gentleman Edgar & 23 yo wife Josephine Jamison. Their children 3 yo Pauline & 0.4 yo Vesta Jamison were listed as living with them. Edgar was already afflicted with consumption (tuberculosis). Josephine's health was 'delicate.5
Estate-WillJosephine was named an heir in the will of Edgar Jamison, her husband, dated 20 April 1886 at Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware, receiving all his personal property absolutely.2
Census1900*Josephine appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Philadelphia Ward 24, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, as 45 yo widowed boarder Josephine (Lyle) in the household of her brother-in-law & sister Samuel & Marg Curry. Josephine & Marg's mother 67 yo widow Catherine Lyle is also in the home, among others. Josephine's birthdate is correctly Oct 1854.4
Census1920Josephine appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Philadelphia Ward 47, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, as 65 yo widowed hotel chambermaid lodger Josephine Jamison in the household of 39 yo Mary Byrne.6
Census1930Josephine appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 10 April 1930, as 75 yo Josephine Jamison. This is an odd enumeration. Josephine has her own family & dwelling numbers but in the relationship column she's listed as mother rather than Head. The family above is Enoch & Mary Shatlock neither of whom is remotely her child. The family below is three siblings from Ireland. It's possible this isn't our Josephine but age, birthstate and location all are good.7
Death*Josephine died on 5 December 1930 at 5837 Chester Ave. in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, at age 76, of chronic interstitial nephritis.1
