Census1800* | Jacob appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 31010-10110-0-2 as 26-44 yo Jacob Vandegrift. Six of eight fit perfectly, but two issues - Francis is young by 2 yrs of only slot he fits into, and we know of no one to fill the female 16-25 slot.15,16 |
Milit-Service* | Jacob Vandegrift served as a Cornet with the 2nd Troop of Light Dragoons, 1st Brigade of the Delaware State Militia, enlisting on 14 January 1805. Later on 30 Oct 1807 he held the rank of First Lieutenant, and was still in the Militia in 1810.12,17 |

Census1810 | Jacob appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 01101-11010 as >45 yo Jacob Vandegrift. His wife Jane is likely the female 26-44 yo, daughter Rebecca the female 10-15, son Jacob the male 10-15, daughter Jane the female <10. The male 10-15 could be any one of sons Francis, John and Albert. Where the other two are enumerated currently unknown.18 |

His wife Jane likely the female 45+. Daughter Rebecca the female 16-25, son Jacob 16-25, daughter Jane 10-15 and son James M <10. A good but imperfect match. Either son John or Albert is likely the other male 16-25, though one bracket too young. One male <10 is unknown. Next door is Christopher vdG (300110-32011). Two lines below is Abraham vdG (000110-10200.)19 |

Lt. William Vandegrift1,2,3
M, #93, b. 1765, d. 5 June 1833
Birth* | William, son of Christopher Vandegrift Sr. and Rebecca King, was born in 1765. Tatnall records death at age 68 years in 1833. DE Bible claims age 65.8,9,10,11 |
CensusNF2 | William is probably one of the two males under age 18 listed in the household of his father, Christopher Vandegrift Sr., in the 1782 Delaware Census Lists of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.12 |
Milit-Service* | Lt. William Vandegrift served as Cornet, later 2nd Lieutenant with the Cavalry, 1st Brigade, Delaware Militia between 1802 and 1810.8 |
Marriage* | He married Christiana Vandegrift, daughter of Lewis Vandegrift and Ann King, before 1804. Tatnall lists her as "Christiana, wife". William & Christina were 1st cousins.8,9 |
Estate-Will | William was named an heir in the will of Christopher Vandegrift Sr., as son, dated 3 March 1807 at Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.1 |
Estate-Inventory | They administered the estate inventory of Leonard K. Vandegrift on 23 November 1807 at New Castle Co., Delaware. WM; wife Hester and 1st cousin Lt. William Vandegirft administrators.13,14 |
Census1810* | William appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 1102-1002 as 26-44 yo Wm. Vandegrift. His wife Christiana is likely the female 26-44 yo, daughter Rebecca Ann the female <10 yo, stepsons Samuel L Eccles the male 10-15 yo and Joseph V Eccles the male <10 yo. I speculate that Williams brother-in-law Lewis Vandegrift II is the other male 26-44 yo and his wife Rachel the other female 26-44 yo.15 |
Census1820 | William appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 000202-11101 as over 45 yo William Vandergrift (as indexed). His wife Christiana is likely the female over 45 yo, daughter Rebecca Ann the female 16-25 yo. After that it's sketchy - I susupect Christiana's sons Samuel L & Joseph V Eccles are the two males 16-25 yo. The two young females are currently unidentified. Son Samuel didn't marry Rebecca until 1821, son Joseph didn't marry Christie until closer to 1840.16 |
Death* | William died on 5 June 1833.9,10,8 |
Burial* | He was buried at Saint Georges Cemetery in Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware.10,17,8,9 |

Leonard K. Vandegrift1
M, #101, b. before 18 June 1780, d. 27 June 1807
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 25 April 2023 re sources. There is a dearth of information online (Ancestry & FamilySearch) about Leonard K Vandegrift & Hester Hyatt. Far and away the best source I've found is History of the King Family in Flanders & America, 1300s-1980, Vol. II. With few exceptions that is the source of sources I've used to fill in detals.4 |
Birth* | Leonard, son of Lewis Vandegrift and Ann King, was born before 18 June 1780 in Delaware. Mentioned in his uncle Abraham's (53) will of 18 Jun 1780.5,6 |
Estate-Will | Leonard was named an heir in the will of Abraham Vandegrift, his uncle, dated 18 June 1780 at Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., Pennsylvania (now Delaware), New England.2,7,6 |
Marriage* | He married Hester Hyatt, daughter of Isaac Hyatt Sr. and Elizabeth Lnu, between 1790 and 1799.1 |
LandOther | 20 October 1796 at New Castle Co., Delaware, Leonard K. Vandegrift and others filed a petition in the Orphans Court to have the land of Isaac Hyatt (Sr.), deceased, divided between the heirs.8 |
Estate-Will | Leonard was named an executor in the will of Peter King, his friend, dated 24 February 1801 at New Castle Co., Delaware.9,10 |
Church* | Leonard was an elder of Old Drawyer's Presbyterian Church in Odessa, New Castle Co., Delaware, in 1805.11 |
Name-Sign | Leonard K. Vandegrift signed his name as "Leonard K. Vandegrift". This signature is on his uncle Lewis' (55) estate inventory and also shown in script in King.1 |
Death* | Leonard died on 27 June 1807 in New Castle Co., Delaware. Death date is 'on or about' per administration papers for his estate; this seems to be confirmed by the "Inventory: Leonard K. Vandegrift d. 27 Jun 1807, sworn by Subscribers on 23 Nov 1807".12 |
Estate-Inventory | His estate was inventoried on 23 November 1807 at New Castle Co., Delaware, wife Hester and 1st cousin Lt. William Vandegirft administrators.12,1 |

Alrich Ryland Pennington1,2,3,4
M, #112, b. circa 1785, d. from 31 October 1842 to 7 December 1842
Birth* | Alrich, son of Leonard Adkey Pennington and Martha Reyland, was born circa 1785. His gravestone reads "aged 57 years". In his will he spelled his name Alrich R. Penington.2,3 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Rebecca Vandegrift, daughter of Capt. Leonard Vandegrift and Ruth Sankey, on 28 January 1806. DE Vitals has a minister's return from 1807 which means little more than they were married prior to that date. One other alleged child for whom I've found no evidence was Christopher (1810- ).6,7,4,8 |
Census1810 | Alrich Ryland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 11301-111 as 16-25 yo Alrichs Pennington. The female 16-25 yo is likely his wife Rebecca (though probably one bracket too old), the female 0-9 yo their daughter Hester Ann. Son Jacob is a possible for the male 0-9 yo but that would require him also being enumerated as 0-9 yo in 1820. Possible persons who fit well for the others include Alrich's siblings Asbury & Fredus for the other two males 16-25 yo, sister Rebecca for the 10-15 yo female. The male 10-15 yo is a mystery as is the male 0-9 yo if it isn't son Jacob.9 |
Census1820 | Alrich Ryland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 200111-2111 as 26-44 yo Alrich R Pennington.10 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Maria "Mara" Lnu on 23 July 1826 at Delaware. DE Marriages has two dates: 23 Jul and 11 Aug. The earlier is the marriage and the latter presumably the minister's return. Marriage date confirmed by Susannah Vandegrift on p. 33 (taped) where she states specifically, Alrich R. Pennington was married to Maria Waithman (Widow of John Waithman) July 23rd 1826. She would have had no info on the minister's paperwork.11,6,1 |
Occupation* | Alrich was a hotel keeper.12 |
Census1830 | Alrich Ryland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Port Penn, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 0121001-0201001 as 40-49 yo Alrich Pennington. His wife Mara is likely the female 40-49 yo, son Jacob the male 15-19 yo, son Leonard one of the two sons 10-14 yo, son Lewdon the son 5-9 yo. The female 15-19 yo could be either Martha Jane or Ruth. The two females 5-9 yo and one of the males 10-14 yo are currently unknown. This census page lists several other relatives, including Jacob vdG, Christopher vdG and Joseph & Adam Diehl.13 |
Census1840* | Alrich Ryland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 00010001-000010001 as 50-59 yo Alrich R Pennington. His m2 Maria is likely the female 50-59 yo, daughter Ruth the female 20-29 yo and son Marion the male 15-19 yo. Alrich may be enumerated one bracket too old.14 |
Estate-Will* | Alrich Ryland Pennington left a will dated 31 October 1842 at Port Penn, New Castle Co., Delaware, naming his brother Ashbury S Penington executor. Named heirs included his children Martha, Ruth, Leonard and Louden. Son Jacob A was mentioned as already having received a fair share. Granddaughter Ann Eliza Read also was an heir but I don't know whose daughter she was.1 |
Death* | Alrich died from 31 October 1842 to 7 December 1842. Date range bracketed by his will and start of probate proceedings. Richards claims death year of 1846 without citation. Find A Grave says 1842 without a headstone.1,2 |
Estate-Probate | Alrich's will was probated at Port Penn, New Castle Co., Delaware, on 7 December 1842. The will proven in court and letters testamentary issued this date.1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Old Saint Ann's Church Cemetery in Middletown, New Castle Co., Delaware. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo or other citation so claims are worthless.2,3,5 |

William Vandegrift1,2,3
M, #118, b. 13 February 1791, d. 22 November 1829
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 21 December 2022 re two Find A Grave memorials. William has two Find A Grave memorials as of today, nos. 60649706 and 14449506. They do not contradict each other with ...9706 being the more comprehensive. |
Birth* | William, son of Capt. Leonard Vandegrift and Ruth Sankey, was born on 13 February 1791 in Delaware. Find A Grave claims 13 Feb 1792 but his headstone says he died age 38 which would make birth year 1791. Susannah Vandegrift specifically says 13 Feb 1791.5,4,6,7 |
Census1800 | William is probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Capt. Leonard Vandegrift, in the 1800 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.8,9 |
Marr-Bond | William Vandegrift and Mary Walraven posted a marriage bond on 17 March 1813 at New Castle Co., Delaware.10,11 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Walraven, daughter of Elias W. Walraven and Lydia Aspril, on 18 March 1813.12,13,4 |
Estate-Will | William was named an heir in the will of Capt. Leonard Vandegrift, his father, dated 4 June 1819 at Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, receiving real estate.14 |
Census1820* | William appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 20002-002 as 26-44 yo William Vandegrift. His wife Mary is likely one of the two females 16-25 yo. Sons Ezekiel & William the two males <10 yo. The extra male 24-44 and female 16-25 currently not identified. Note there's another William Vandegrift in St. George's Hundred listed as 002001-11101. That enumeration definitely doesn't fit this family.15 |
Death* | William died on 22 November 1829 at age 38.4,16,17,7 |
Burial* | He was buried at Old Drawyers Church Cemetery in Odessa, New Castle Co., Delaware. Find A Grave provides photo of his headstone.18,6,19,7 |
Estate-Probate | William's will was probated at New Castle Co., Delaware, in 1830. Letters of Administration issued this year. No day or month in the DE Wills record. A second entry on the same page for a William Vandegrift dated 1833 also reads 'Adm'. That record is in Book T, p. 32. Perhaps this was the final settlement.20 |

Estate-Will | Abraham was named an heir in the will of Capt. Leonard Vandegrift, his father, dated 4 June 1819 at Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, receiving real estate.15 |

I don't see the 'Senior' part, just a scribble. There's one unknown male under 10, else a good match.16 |
Marr-Bond | Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift and Sarah Janvier posted a marriage bond on 18 April 1825 at New Castle Co., Delaware. Abraham & Peter Bowman were the bondsmen.17,18 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Sarah Janvier, daughter of Philip Janvier and Rebecca Golden, on 19 April 1825.19,7 |
Census1830 | Abraham "Abram" appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 002002-1010001 as 30-39 yo Abm Vandegrift. His m2 wife Sarah is the female 40-49, daughter Mary Ann the female 10-14. The second male 30-39, two males 10-14 and female 0-4 yo are currently unidentified.20 |

Perfect but for wife Sarah one column too young. Daughter Mary Ann had married Thomas Jamison three years prior but he's not in this enumeration. There is one of that name in Saint Georges Hundred but he's one bracket too old. Unresolved.21 |
Census1850* | Abraham and Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 1 June 1850, as 58? yo farmer Abram & 60 yo Sarah Vandegrift. Their children Rebecca Golden and Sarah Ruth were listed as living with them.22 |

Estate-Will* | Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift left a will at New Castle Co., Delaware. I've not found a copy of the will but its existence is confirmed in Delaware Wills & Probates, image 732 of 874, wherein Sarah Ruth Woods, daughter of Abram, and her husband Isaac Woods received $11,00 and change as her half of the residual estate of her father "under and by virtue of the will of the said Abram Vandegrift, deceased". This settlement was dated 20 June 1874.26 |
