Samuel Bartlett1

M, #456, b. 15 April 1774, d. 19 May 1845
FatherAdoniram Bartlett1 b. 10 Sep 1735, d. 23 Sep 1805
MotherMiriam Marsh1 b. 18 Jun 1743, d. 26 Jan 1822
Last Edited23 Oct 2024
Birth*Samuel, son of Adoniram Bartlett and Miriam Marsh, was born on 15 April 1774 in Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, a twin.2,3,4,5
Marr-Banns*Intentions of marriage for Samuel Bartlett and Sarah Graves were published on 29 September 1799 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. The marriage was published 13 October. Pease claims 5 October as marriage date.6,7,5
MarriageHe married Sarah Graves on 5 October 1799.8
Census1800Samuel appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 001-001 as 16-25 yo Samuel Bartlet. Samuel is one bracket too young, though only by a few months.9
Estate-WillSamuel was named an heir in the will of Adoniram Bartlett, his father, dated 11 May 1805 at Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, receiving one dollar.10
Census1810Samuel appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 1001-2001 as 26-44 yo Samuel Bartlet. We know Dexter lived beyond 1810, so either Edward has died or there's an error in the enumeration.11
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 18 September 2024 re possible daughter. Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 in Newburyport Births, p. 32, lists a Sarah Kimball Bartlett, d/o Samuel & Sarah Bartlett, bp. 24 Apr 1816. I don't see how this can be our Sam & Sarah.12

Census1820Samuel appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 000001-1111 as >45 yo Samuel Bartlet. A perfect fit.13
Census1830Samuel appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00001001-000013001 as 50-59 yo Samuel Bartlet. Several questions re this enumeration. Sarah is one bracket too old. The three females 30-39 are unknown. The female 20-29 could be Zeviah or Miranda. The male 20-29 could be Dexter or Edward.14
Census1840*Samuel appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 000000001-000001001 as 60-69 yo Samuel Bartlett. Zeviah is only daughter in the right age bracket. This implies her husband Williard Lee had died by this time or else she was divorced.15
ResearchNote*Research Note of 18 September 2024 re possible will. Massachusetts, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1635-1991 has a will for a Samuel Bartlett, written 19 Jun 1844. This does not appear to be the same person as our Samuel. The will leaves everything to an unnamed wife. In the probate document the testator is said to have two brothers, Hubband & John Bartlett, the 'only heirs at law'. Our Sam doesn't have any siblings of those names.16

Death*Samuel died on 19 May 1845 in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 71. There's a Samuel, probably this person, who died of "old age" in Conway, June 1845, in the NEHGS records.17,7,4
Burial*He was buried at Howland Cemetery in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides headstone photo and some bio.4

M, #461, b. 12 September 1785, d. 6 August 1862
FatherAdoniram Bartlett3,2 b. 10 Sep 1735, d. 23 Sep 1805
MotherMiriam Marsh3,2 b. 18 Jun 1743, d. 26 Jan 1822
Last Edited22 Nov 2024
Birth*Adoniram, son of Adoniram Bartlett and Miriam Marsh, was born on 12 September 1785 in Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts.4,5,6,1
Census1790Adoniram is probably one of the two males under age 16 listed in the household of Adoniram Bartlett, in the 1790 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.7
Census1800Adoniram is probably the male under age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Adoniram Bartlett, in the 1800 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.8
Estate-WillAdoniram was named an heir in the will of Adoniram Bartlett, his father, dated 11 May 1805 at Conway, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, receiving one dollar.9
Marr-Banns*Marriage banns for Adoniram Bartlett Jr. and Anna Russell were published on 6 September 1806 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.10,11,12
Census1810Adoniram appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 1011-1001 as 26-44 yo Adoniram Bartlett. Another challenging enumeration. We should have two sons <10 but this only shows one. One daughter <10 is listed but we know of no such person. The remaining male 26-44 is unknown, though Adoniram has 2 brothers currently unaccounted for in this census who could fit the bracket - Josiah and Calvin.13
Census1820Adoniram appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 20001-2001 as 26-44 yo Adoniram Bartlet (indexed Adoriram). A perfect fit.14
Census1830*Adoniram appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 001001-0110001 as 30-39 yo Adoniram Bartlet. Adoniram is one bracket too young & Anna is one bracket too old but the children work perfectly.15
Census1840Adoniram appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00000001-00011 as 50-59 yo Adoniram Bartlett. His daughters Dorothy & Emily are probably the two females listed.16
Estate-WillAdoniram was named an heir in the will of Josiah Bartlett, his brother, dated 2 August 1847 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, receiving $20.17
Census1850Adoniram appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 12 August 1850, as 65 yo Adoniram Bartlett (indexed Adamrons). His daughter Dorothy Field was listed as living with him.18
Census1860Adoniram appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 9 July 1860, as 75 yo laborer Adoniram Bartlett. His daughter Dorothy Field was listed as living with him.19
Death*Adoniram died on 6 August 1862 in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 76, of old age. The MA State Vitals record is problematic in that his mother is listed as Sarah rather than Miriam. Her birthplace of Brookfield is correct however.20,1,21
Burial*He was buried at Howland Cemetery in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides NO headstone photo.1

Moses Nims1

M, #463, b. 10 January 1748, d. 18 July 1839
Last Edited13 Sep 2024
Birth*Moses was born on 10 January 1748, s/o Moses and Margaret Allen Nims. His father's Find A Grave entry gives birth date of 10 May 1748 but confirms death year of 1839. Brother to Elisha (1749-1809) and Ariel (1750/1-1818).1,2
Marr-Banns*Intentions of marriage for Moses Nims and Miriam Bartlett were published on 23 March 1799 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Record of the marriage was published 8 April. Moses m2 Rebecca Ames of Conway.3,1
Census1800Moses appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Deerfield, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00001-1101 as >45 yo Moses Nims. His wife Miriam is likely the female 26-44 yo, daughter Miriam I the female under 10 yo. The female 10-15 yo is unidentified. Perhaps she's a daughter from a prior marriage by Mose.4
Marriage*His second marriage was to Rebecca Ames on 1 February 1812 at Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.5
Census1820*Moses appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Ashfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 0000001-00101 as >45 yo Moses Nims. His wife Miriam is likely the female >45 yo and daughter Miriam (II) the female 16-25 yo.
This enumeration is an alphabetical list of names. Other Nims HOHs are Israel, Israel Jr., and James Nims, or names to that effect.6
Census1830Moses appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Ashfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00000000001-00001000001 as 80-89 yo Moses Nims. His wife Miriam is likely the female 60-69 yo. The female 10-15 yo is unidentified.7
Death*Moses died on 18 July 1839 in Ashfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 91. Wife Rebecca's estate documents say Moses died 17 July, not 18 July.8,9,1
Burial*He was buried in Ashfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.10
Estate-AdminHis administration of estate began on 2 November 1839 at Ashfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, on which date his wife Rebecca declined acting as his estate administrator. This suggests Moses did leave a will, though I've not seen a copy of it yet.9
