Thomas Jamison1

M, #3795, b. 1 September 1807, d. 12 December 1864
Last Edited1 Apr 2023
Birth*Thomas was born on 1 September 1807 in New Castle Co., Delaware. The Jamison SAR app says 9 January.2,1
Marriage*He married Mary Ann Vandegrift, daughter of Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift and Mary Bowman, on 24 April 1837 in New Castle Co., Delaware.3,4,1
Census1840Thomas did NOT appear on the 1840 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, where expected in the household of his father-in-law Abraham "Abram" Vandegrift, though his wife is likely the 20-29 yo female.5
Census1850Thomas and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 29 July 1850, as 42 yo farmer Thomas & 32 yo Mary A Jameson. Their children Mary, Albert, Anna, Agnes and Emma were listed as living with them. Others in the home were 65 yo Mary Houston and 58 yo John Murphy, relationships if any unknown, and four black farm laborers.6
Census1860*Thomas and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 26 June 1860, as 51 yo farmer Thomas & 41 yo Mary A Jamison. Their children Albert, Mary, Anna, Agnes, Laura, Edgar, Clarence and Oliver Vandegrift were listed as living with them.7
Estate-Will*Thomas Jamison left a will dated 13 March 1863 at Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, naming friends William D Clark & Albert O Newton his executors. His children Albert, Mary, Anna, Agnes, Laura, Clarence and Edgar were named heirs of his large estate consisting of five farms totalling roughly 700 acres. The estate was inventoried in March 1865.
However, this is far from the end of the Thomas Jamison estate story. His documents in DE Wills & Probates go from image 410 through image 706, nearly 300 pages! The last document is dated 15 December 1879. A brief scan of the available documents revealed at least three more undated wills. There was a lawsuit challenging the later wills by Agnes Jamison, her husband Charles H McWhorter and her sister Laura Jamison based on their contention that Thomas was not 'of sound mind' having apparently suffered a stroke between the first and subsequent wills. One of the wills was intentionally burned by one of his daughters. How it all resolved I leave to researchers more interested in this particular family. See extensive article on the final settlement in the 09 Nov 1915 issue of Wilmington's Morning News, available at Newspapers.com.8,9
Death*Thomas died on 12 December 1864 in New Castle Co., Delaware, at age 57.2,1
Burial*He was buried at Old Drawyers Church Cemetery in Odessa, New Castle Co., Delaware. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2
