Birth*Bertha was born on 8 September 1881 in Kentucky, d/o Lofton Lamasco Jones & Pernecia F Lester, sister to Cora Belle and Jack Jones. Full name per FSTrees. Surname confirmed from brother-in-law Jack Jones with Buckner & Bertha in the 1900 census. The 1900 census says Sep 1880, her headstone reads Sept. 8, 1881. FSTrees claims 11 Sep 1881 in Caldwell County.1,2

FSTrees (entry for Buck Cravens (1861-1922), 293L-4R6) claims without citation 04 Dec 1894 in Caldwell Co., KY. That date doesn't work very well with these two censuses.
According to FSTrees Bertha married Albert L Purdy on same date claimed for her marriage to Cravens, with issue Mamie and Ida L Purdy.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Henry B. (1901-1982, m. Gertrude Johnson), Maud E. (c1903- ), Mary Lydia or Lois (1905-1988, perhaps m. Daniel A Kessler), Bertha Frances (1909-2003, m. Isaac Franklin Richardson), Susie H (1911- ), Beulah (c1915- ), and
Nellie Cravens (c1917- ).2,3
Census1900Bertha and Buckner appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 38 yo Buckner P & 19 yo Bertha G Cravens. Their children 4 yo Marie & 2 yo Ida Purdy (from Bertha's m1), and brother-in-law Jack Jones were listed as living with them.4
Census1910*Bertha and Buckner appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Herrin, Williamson Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 May 1910, as 47 yo Buckner & 29 yo Mrs Bertha Cravens. Their children 14 yo Mammie & 13 yo Ida Purdy (from Bertha's m1 to Albert L Purdy), 9 yo Henry B., 7 yo Maud E., 4 yo Mary L., and 1 yo Bertha F. Cravens were listed as living with them.3
Marr-Divorce*Bertha was divorced from Buckner P. "Buck" Cravens between 1916 and 1920. Date based on daughter Nellie's age of 3.10 in the 1920 census. FSTrees (entry for Bertha Maddux Jones (1880-1946), 2MG1-QPB) says Bertha m3 Herbert Henry Parker in 1924.5
Census1920*Bertha appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 7 January 1920, as 39 yo divorcee Bertha Cravens. Her children 18 yo Henry, 13 yo Lois, 10yo Frances, 8 yo Susie, 5 yo Beulah, and 3 yo Nellie Cravens were listed as living with her.5
Death*Bertha died on 29 July 1940 at age 58.1
Burial*She was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. This is same cemetery as husband Buckner, though as of June 2019 they are not linked.1

Thomas D. Lawrence1

M, #8475, b. 25 November 1836, d. 5 February 1911
Last Edited5 Apr 2023
Birth*Thomas was born on 25 November 1836 in Graves Co., Kentucky, s/o William Lawrence & Gatsy B Pace. His Trees entry claims birth in Gibson County rather than Graves.2
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, daughter of Samuel L. Palmer and Frances Louisa Means, on 18 August 1861 at Jackson Co., Arkansas. Clearly there are some transcription errors on the names in the two Arkansas marriage records.3,4,1
Milit-Service*Thomas D. Lawrence served as a Private with Co. K, 30th Regt. Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War between 1862 and 1865. Regimental history from the NPS database reads, 30th Infantry Regiment [also called 5th Trans-Mississippi Regiment or 39th Regiment after April, 1863] was formed during summer of 1862. It served in McRae's and Roane's Brigade and fought at Prairie Grove and Helena. Later the unit was reogranized and mounted, moved with General Price to Missouri, and disbanded in the spring of 1865. The field officers were Colonels Robert A. Hart, A. J. McNeill, and James W. Rogan; Lieutenant Colonels G. W. Baldwin and Paul M. Cobbs; and Majors Martin Dawson and Joseph C. Martin.5,6
Census1870*Thomas and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 30 August 1870, as 35 yo farmer Thomas & 26 yo Sarah V. Lawrence. Their children William Shelby and Lula Lee were listed as living with them.7
Census1880Thomas and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1880, as 45 yo farmer & miller Thos D & 36 yo wife Sallie V Lawrence. Their children William Shelby, Lula Lee, Felix K., Albert S. and Lucien D. were listed as living with them, as well as Thomas's 67 yo mother Gatsy Lawrence.8
Marriage*His second marriage was to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jackson on 11 October 1882 at Jackson Co., Arkansas. The AR County Marriages has Tom's age perfect at 45, Elizabeth's at 30 yo. The 1900 census shows them married only 14 years.9,10,11
Census1900*Thomas and Elizabeth appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 4 June 1900, as 64 yo Thomas D. & 47 yo Elizabeth Lawrence, Others in the household include a 10 yo niece Willie Penix. Thomas is a merchant.12
Marr-Divorce*Thomas was divorced from Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jackson between 1900 and 1910.13
Census1910*Thomas appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 72 yo T D Lawrence. 56 yo female Fannie Boyce (or Boyle) was listed as living with him. Thomas is divorced, presumably from his m2 Elizabeth. His occupation is dry goods merchant which works well with 'merchant' in 1900.13
Death*Thomas died on 5 February 1911 in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, at age 74.2
Burial*He was buried at Palmer Cemetery in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas. Headstone photo & uncited obit available at Find A Grave.2

Birth*William, son of Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, was born on 15 April 1865 in Arkansas.2,3
Census1870William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of his parents, Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, as 5 yo William S.4
Census1880William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of his parents, Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, as 15 yo son Shelby Lawrence.5
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary J. Payne on 2 March 1887 at Jackson Co., Arkansas. Married 13 years with 5 born & 5 living in 1910, 22 years with 11 born & 8 living in 1910. My preliminary research suggests their children were James Walter (1888-1952), Dannie L (1890-1891), Lula Alice (1893-1962), Harry Albert (1894- ), Joseph L. (1896-1900), Herbert R. (1899- ), Mabel (1899- ), Eva V (1901- ), Verna (1902-1903), Clarence (1905-1971), and Hattie Noreen Lawrence (1907- ).6,7
Census1900*William and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 35 yo William & 33 yo Mary J. Lawrence. Their children 12 yo Walter, 7 yo Lula A, 5 yo Harry A, 3 yo Joseph L, and 1 yo Herbert R Lawrence were listed as living with them. This is the only William Lawrence in Jackson County in this census.8
Census1910*William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 23 April 1910, as 45 yo W S & 43 yo M J Lawrence. Their children 15 yo Harry, 13 yo Herbert, 11 yo Mabel, 9 yo Eva, 5 yo Clarence, and 2 yo Hattie Lawrence were listed as living with them.9

Son Allan is 5.9 yo in 1920 suggesting a marriage on or before 1914. William's first wife Mary Jane died in 1912. My preliminary research suggests their children were Allen (c1914- ), Crawford (c1916- ), Ruth (1919-2004, m. Woodrow Pilcher), and Robert Lawrence (c1925- ).10,8
Census1920*William and Jessie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 29 January 1920, as 53 yo William S & 33 yo Jessie Lawrence. Birth*Melissa, daughter of Caleb Harbert and Sarah Downey, was born in 1839 in Dearborn (now Ohio) Co., Indiana.4
Census1840Melissa is probably one of the two females under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Caleb Harbert, in the 1840 Federal Census of Dearborn Co., Indiana.5
Census1850Melissa appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Caleb Harbert and Sarah Downey, as 9 yo Melissa Harbert.6
Marriage*Her first marriage was to George H. Busby on 20 August 1857 at Ohio Co., Indiana.1
Census1870*Melissa and George appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cass Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 13 July 1870, as 39 yo carpenter George & 28 yo Melissa Busby. Their son John C. was listed as living with them.7
Census1880Melissa and George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana, enumerated 7 June 1880, as 49 yo carpenter G. H. & 39 yo wife M. J. Busby. Their son John C. was listed as living with them.8
Marriage*Her second marriage was to James G. Wescott on 3 April 1900 at North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana. There are two entries for this marriage in IN Marriages. Date & location is the same but minor differences in other fields. This is noted as Melissa's 2nd marriage.9,10,4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 30 August 2019 re something odd. Melissa married Wescott in April 1900 yet in the June 1900 census she's living with her son and his wife. Wescott didn't die until 1923. Perhaps he was away on business. Melissa passed away three years later so perhaps she was in need of more care than living alone offered. One more strange thing - Melissa has two Find A Grave memorials. At least they're in agreement on the major dates and places! Memoriial nos. 200325245 and 6402152.1

Census1900Melissa appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Center Twp., Jennings Co., Indiana, as 59 yo widowed mother Melissa J Busby in the household of John C. Busby and Sophia Lnu; as 38 yo coal merchant John C & 452 yo wife Sophia Busby.11
