Mamie Means1

MotherEaster Virginia "Essie" Ricketts1 b. 29 Apr 1862, d. 18 Oct 1935
Last Edited9 Oct 2022
Birth*Mamie, daughter of Winfield Scott Means and Easter Virginia "Essie" Ricketts, was born on 14 June 1881. Son Fred's death record at Ohio Deaths, 1908-1953 gives her name as Mary Lou Lnu.1
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Finis Wortham on 20 October 1897 at Christian Co., Kentucky. In the 1880 census Mamie and her m2 Fred Calhoun have 11 yo step-daughter Lillie May Wortham in the house so an m1 for Mamie to someone with surname Wortham is likely. In 1930 we find 34 yo Lillie Worthingham in the home w/ Mamie & Fred. Working with FamilySearch databases I find only one marriage for Wortham-Means. The marriage date and location work fine with expectations.
The transcription of basic data at FamilySearch leaves a bit of a question as to whether this is the correct man. But the image shows the marriage taking place 'at the home of Mrs. Rickets...in the presence of Lige Rickets [possibly Mamie's uncle Elijah], John Rickets' [possibly her uncle John T] and other unknown persons. That cinches it in my mind.
I find no records for Finis at Find A Grave or in FS databases.2
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Fredrich Sidney Calhoun circa 1906. Married 4 years with 2 born and 2 living in the 1910 census. Nearest relative on the draft card is Mamie Calhoun.3,1
Census1910*Mamie and Fredrich appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 30 yo m2 Fred & 28 yo m2 Mamie Calhoun. Their children Lillie May and Fred were listed as living with them.4
Census1920Mamie and Fredrich appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 3 January 1920, as 39 yo Fred S & 38 yo Mamie Calhoun. Their son Fred was listed as living with them.5
Census1930Mamie and Fredrich appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 14 April 1930, as 56 yo Fred & 53 yo Mamie Calhoun. Their daughter Lillie May was listed as living with them.6
Residence*Mamie resided in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, on 19 October 1935. Mrs. Fred Calhoun of Hopkinsville is a surviving daughter in her mother Essie's obit of 19 October 1935.7
Census1940Mamie and Fredrich appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 6 April 1940, as 60 yo Fred Sr & 58 yo Mamie (indexed Maude) Calhoun. Their 9 yo grandson Fred Calhoun III was listed as living with them.8
Residence*Mamie and Fredrich resided at 119 S. McPherson Ave. in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, on 27 April 1942.9
Death*Mamie died on 2 December 1969 at age 88.1
Burial*She was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, Section F. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

Census1870Maggie appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of her father, Robert H. Harvey, as 1 yo Maggie B Harvey. A 1 yo Maggie B Harvey also shows up w/ grandmother Louisa Palmer in this census, a double-enumeration as best I can figure.3
Census1880Maggie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of her father, Robert H. Harvey, as 12 yo daughter Maggie B Harvey. She may be double-enumerated again here as 12 yo step-daughter Bell Harvey, though her father's birthstate is shown as TN rather than NC.4

Census1910Maggie and Green appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 15 April 1910, as 43 yo Green A & 41 yo Rosa Choate. Their children 20 yo Alice, 17 yo Sallie, 13 yo Robt, 9 yo Richard, 6 yo Thos, and 3 yo Fannie Choate were listed as living with them.7

Last Edited23 Sep 2022
Birth*Maude was born on 15 February 1872 in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, d/o Robert H Harrison & Mary Jane Langston.2,1
Marriage*She married Samuel William Harvey, son of Robert H. Harvey and Mary Bell Palmer, on 14 October 1891 in Jackson Co., Arkansas. The 1910 census shows married 19 years with 4 born and 2 living. My preliminary research suggests their children were infant daughter (1900-1900), Clara Rose (1895-1982, m. Taylor Gregg Dowell), Sylla (1896-1988, m. Edward Wayne Boyce), and one other born and died between censuses. The first three have Find A Grave memorials (54419675, 192194357, and 121791834).1
Census1900*Maude and Samuel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 15 June 1900, as 35 yo James & 28 yo Maud Harvey. Their children 5 yo Clara M and 3 yo Sylla Harvey were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder. The record is indexed as James but I read it as Samuel.3
Census1910Maude and Samuel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 15 July 1910, as 44 yo Sam W & 38 yo Maud Harvey. Their daughters 15 yo Clara and 13 yo Sylla were listed as living with them, as well as one servant.4
Census1920Maude and Samuel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 31 January 1920, as 53 yo Samuel W and 47 yo Maud V Harvey. Their daughters 25 yo Clara O & 23 yo Sylla J Harvey were listed as living with them.5
Death*Maude died on 31 May 1948 in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, at age 76.2
Burial*She was buried at Gracelawn Cemetery in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas. Headstone photo & uncited obit available at Find A Grave.2

Jessie Allen1

F, #9319, b. 8 April 1886, d. 6 March 1956
Last Edited14 Oct 2022
Birth*Jessie was born on 8 April 1886 in Arkansas.2,3
Marriage*She married William Shelby Lawrence, son of Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, between 1912 and 1914. Date based on Shelby being with Mary Jane in the 1900 census and with Jessie in 1920. Son Allan is 5.9 yo in 1920 suggesting a marriage on or before 1914. William's first wife Mary Jane died in 1912. My preliminary research suggests their children were Allen (c1914- ), Crawford (c1916- ), Ruth (1919-2004, m. Woodrow Pilcher), and Robert Lawrence (c1925- ).1,4
Census1920*Jessie and William appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 29 January 1920, as 53 yo William S & 33 yo Jessie Lawrence. Their children 24 yo Harry A, 21 yo Herbert R, 19 yo Mabel, 16 yo Eva, 14 yo Clarence, 12 yo Hattie, 5.9 yo Allen, 3.2 yo Crawford, 0.2 yo Ruth, 15 yo step-daughter Chloa McGee, and 13 yo step-daughter Constance McGee were listed as living with them. Harry through Hattie are children of Shelby's first marriage, Allen through Ruth were Shelby & Jessie's, the last two with surname McGee are presumably children of Jessie's m1 to M V McGhee.5,6
Census1930*Jessie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 4 April 1930, as 45 yo Jessie Lawrence. Her children 15 yo Allen, 12 yo Crawford, 10 yo Ruth, and 4 yo Robert were listed as living with her.3
Death*Jessie died on 6 March 1956 at age 69.2
Burial*She was buried at Gracelawn Cemetery in Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2

James D. Spriggs1

M, #9320, b. circa 1866
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*James was born circa 1866. FSTrees (entry for James E Spriggs (1864-1974), ID no. L7DZ-VT5) claims a lifespan of 1864-1974! The 1864 value is correct ±1 year. I've been unable to find a death or burial record.1
Marriage*He married Lula Lee Lawrence, daughter of Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, on 12 June 1887 in Jackson Co., Arkansas. I'm guessing this marriage did not end well since Lula doesn't even mention her surname Spriggs on her headstone. James m2 Nellie Mullins in 1893 following Lula's death. My preliminary research suggests only child was Lawrence Spriggs (1888-1962, m. Mary Annie Riggs).2,3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 17 June 2019 re census analysis. In the 1900 census, after Lula's death, we find James in Jonesboro, Craighead, Arkansas, with his m2 wife Nellie, m1 son Lawrence, and m2 son Carroll, as 35 yo James E & 31 yo Nellie Spriggs.4

Eulah Lnu1

Last Edited21 Jul 2022
Birth*Eulah was born in May 1872 in Missouri. The original spelling of her first name is unknown. Find A Grave says Ullah "Eula". Her headstone reads Ullah. FSTrees (entry for Eulah L Lawrence (1871-1900), ID no. LJ5N-3M7) says Eulah. The 1900 census says Eula. Her marriage record to J L Bowden says Eulah. I suspect the L often seen as her middle initial comes from her first marriage to Felix Lawrence.2,3,4
Marriage*She married Felix K. Lawrence, son of Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, in 1891. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Virgie (1893- ) Lawrence. Following Felix's death Eulah m2 J Luther Bowden in 1902. In the 1910 census we find Luther & Utah (as indexed) Bowden with 17 yo Virgie Lawrence in Jackson County.1
Census1900*Eulah and Felix appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 29 yo Felix K & 28 yo Eula L Lawrence. Their 8 yo daughter Virgie was listed as living with them.3

Last Edited14 Oct 2022
Birth*Sarah was born in June 1874 in Alabama. In the 1910 Sarah's birthstate is Illinois with both of her parents born Alabama. FSTrees (ID no. LJ5F-ZRQ) provides firstname & middle initial without source citation.2,1
Marriage*She married Albert S. Lawrence, son of Thomas D. Lawrence and Sarah V. "Sallie" Palmer, on 28 September 1893 in Lawrence Co., Arkansas. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Lizzie (1893- ). The marriage license was dated 27th. The 1900 census shows married 7 years with 3 born and 1 living.1,2
Census1900*Sarah and Albert appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Jefferson Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 23 June 1900, as 27 yo Albert S & 25 yo Sarah F Lawrence. Their 6 yo daughter Lizie L Lawrence was listed as living with them.2
Census1910Sarah and Albert appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tuckerman, Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 37 yo m1 Ab S & 37 yo m2 Sallie Lawrence. Their 15 yo daughter Lizie Lawrence was listed as living with them.3
Death*Sarah died after 18 April 1910. FSTrees' (ID no. LJ5N-P9M) date of 1909 is clearly wrong since she's in the 1910 census.3

Laurah C. Steen1,2

F, #9325, b. August 1853, d. 2 March 1926
Last Edited21 Jul 2022
Birth*Laurah was born in August 1853 in Arkansas. Her name is Laura on the marriage record but Laurah on her headstone.3,1
Marriage*She married George Henry Palmer, son of Samuel L. Palmer and Frances Louisa Means, on 2 November 1870 in Jackson Co., Arkansas. Married 29 years with 6 born and 3 living in the 1900 census, 37 years with 3 & 3 in the 1910. |My preliminary research suggests their children were Oda Lena (1874-1916, m. John F Young), Samuel Tilden (1876-1937, m. Edna V Wolfe), and Maggie Cordelia Palmer (1879-b1900). I don't buy the idea that they had a 4th child, Nellie. See Research Note this topic.2
Census1880*Laurah and George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 7 June 1880, as 32 yo Geo H & 26 yo Laura C Palmer. Their children Oda Lena, Samuel Tilden and Maggie C. were listed as living with them, as well as 12 yo orphan Jane Gibson.4
Census1900Laurah and George appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of T4N R4E, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, enumerated 25 July 1900, as 52 yo George H & 46 yo Laura C Palmer. No children listed.3
Census1910Laurah and George appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chickasaw Twp., Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 62 yo George H & 57 yo Lorry Palmer. Their children Oda Lena and Samuel Tilden were listed as living with them. This is a bizarre enumeration. Oda's age is about 10 years too low, Sam's is 13 years too low. Furthermore Sam and wife Edna are enumerated separately with their 6 yo son Lester, Oda and husband Frank Young are also enumerated elsewhere. So who are Ida and Sam T? Given the order of enumeration (George, Laura, Ida, Sam, Nellie) I don't buy the claim by some that there's a daughter named Ida, in addition to Oda, nor that there were two sons named Sam T.
There are a lot of boarders surname Nail continuing onto the next census sheet living with George & Laurah.5
Census1920Laurah and George appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Okemah Twp., Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 6 February 1920, as 72 yo George & 66 yo Laura Palmer.6
Death*Laurah died on 2 March 1926 at age 72. Husband George's obit, included at Find A Grave, says she died 3 days before George, 05 March.1
Burial*She was buried at Highland Cemetery in Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

FatherGeorge Henry Palmer2 b. 29 Jan 1848, d. 5 Mar 1926
MotherLaurah C. Steen2 b. Aug 1853, d. 2 Mar 1926
Last Edited21 Jul 2022
Birth*Samuel, son of George Henry Palmer and Laurah C. Steen, was born on 13 August 1876 in Jackson Co., Arkansas. Sam's WWI draft registration confirms birthdate exactly. There's another Samuel Tilden Palmer, b. 1877 in Kentucky, d. San Diego 1959, who may be confused with our Sam.1,3
Census1880Samuel appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of his parents, George Henry Palmer and Laurah C. Steen, as 3 yo Sam C Palmer.2
Census1900*Samuel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of T2N R1E, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, as 31 yo single partner Sam T Palmer in the household of 31 yo physician John W Watson. Sam's occupation is bookkeeper.4
Marriage*He married Edna V. Wolfe on 10 June 1902 in Carter Co., Oklahoma. Married 7 years w/ 1 born and 1 living in 1910. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Lester T Palmer (1803-1855). He has a Find A Grave memorial linked to his parents.5,1
Census1910*Samuel and Edna appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 33 yo Sam T & 27 yo Edna V Palmer. Their 6 yo son Lester T Palmer was listed as living with them, as well as two boarders. Sam's occupation is president of a mercantile company.6
Census1910Samuel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chickasaw Twp., Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma in the household of his parents, George Henry Palmer and Laurah C. Steen, as 20 yo son Sam T Palmer.7
Residence*Samuel and Edna resided in ||, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, on 12 September 1918. Sam is a self-employed merchant. This jives well with the 1910 census in which he's president of mercantile company.3
Census1920Samuel and Edna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 28 January 1920, as 42 yo S T & 36 yo Edna V Palmer. Their 16 yo son Lester Palmer was listed as living with them, as well as 27 yo foster daughter Merle Farrow and one servant. The census is indexed to say the three people at the top of the next page are part of this family but the family & dwelling numbers jump way up so this is unlikely even though the sheet number is successive.8
Census1930Samuel and Edna appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 8 April 1930, as 53 yo Sam T & 47 yo Edna V Palmer. Their son Lester has moved out and there are only three servants in the home.9
Death*Samuel died in 1937 in Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma.1
Burial*He was buried at Highland Cemetery in Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

Birth*John was born on 26 February 1869.3
Marriage*He married Oda Lena Palmer, daughter of George Henry Palmer and Laurah C. Steen, circa 1895. Married 5 years w/ 3 born & 1 living in 1900. Married 15 years w/ 7 born & 4 living in 1910. Given daughter Alice's birthyear I think ca. 1895 is likely.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Bertha Alice (1897-1983, m. James Edgar Turner), Ethel Margaret (1901-1939, m.
