MotherSarah "Amby" Hanan3,1 b. 27 Sep 1831, d. 25 May 1902
Last Edited15 Oct 2022
Birth*Margaret, daughter of Samuel Palmer and Sarah "Amby" Hanan, was born on 20 September 1851 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri.3,4,1
Census1860Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Table Bluff Twp., Humboldt Co., California in the household of her parents, Samuel Palmer and Sarah "Amby" Hanan, as 8 yo Margaret.1
Marriage*She married Richard A. White on 29 December 1867 in Humboldt Co., California. My preliminary research suggests their children were Mary E (c1871-c1960, perhaps m. Wm B La Mar, divorced by 1930) and Ralph M White (1874-1947). The 1900 census confirms 2 born with 2 living.5,6,3
Census1870*Margaret and Richard appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eel River Twp., Humboldt Co., California, enumerated 22 July 1870, as 27 yo Richard & 18 yo Maggie E White. There's a 12 yo Edward Palmer, likely Maggie's brother who is enumerated twice - once as an 11 yo with his parents, once as a 12 yo with his sister. I've got no one else who fits the bill. He's certainly not her uncle b. 1832.7
Census1880*Margaret appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Rohnerville, Humboldt Co., California, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 28 yo Maggie White. Her children 9 yo Mary E and 6 yo Ralph White were listed as living with her. I haven't found husband Richard yet. Maggie's mother and brothers Edward & William live next door.8
Census1900Margaret and Richard appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., Washington, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 57 yo Richard A & 48 yo Maggie E White.4
Census1910Margaret and Richard appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., Washington, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 67 yo Richard & 58 yo Margret White. Their divorced 39 yo daughter Mary C White was listed as living with them.9
Census1920Margaret and Richard appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., Washington, enumerated circa 19 January 1920, as 78 yo Richard & 68 yo Margaret White. This enumeration is a mess. It's on a 'Supplement Sheet Filed in Census Office 4/134/20'. Richard & Margaret's lines are scratched out. The explanatory note written in left margin is illegible. There are no family numbers. Richard is HOH and Margaret is wife. There are five lodgers living with them.10
Death*Margaret died on 16 November 1924 at her home 246 S. Broadway in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at age 73, of pneumonia.3

ResearchNote*Research Note re really? This man may be a bit of a stretch. Here's my thinking - in the 1880 census we find Mordecai McCoy (apparently Jr., though it's nearly illegible), with sister Mary Becker (future wife of James Means Palmer), and widowed James (who m1 Martha Frances McCoy). Conclusion is that Mordecai, Mary, and the deceased Frances were siblings, all issue of Mordecai Sr. and some unknown wife.1

Marriage*Her first marriage was to Edmond B. McMurtry on 20 August 1890 at Humboldt Co., California. Given that Edmond is in son Amos' house in the 1930 census it seems safe to say this marriage ended in divorce sometime between 1890-1895.3
Marriage*Her second marriage was to William E. Swan on 4 July 1895. In the 1910 census they show married 15 years, m1 for William, m2 for Minnie, with 4 born & 3 living. I've found no info on the deceased child.4

Death*Minnie died on 16 July 1922 in California at age 50.2
Burial*She was buried at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., California. Joint headstone photo w/ m2 Wm E Swan available at Find A Grave.2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 29 May 2019 re research challenges. Minnie May Palmer is challenging. It's pretty well established that she married twice, m1 to Edmond B McMurtry, m2 to William Ellsworth Swan, and that she had a son Amos McMurtry. Beyond that the story gets messy. Pay attention to citations and be suspicious of FSTrees.
