Birth*Jewel, daughter of Elisha Edgar Blair and Sara Thomas "Tommie" Turner, was born on 20 July 1880 in Carson Community, Fannin Co., Texas. She's not in the 1880 census so her birthdate should be after 18 June.5,6,2
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Prof. William A. Lee on 21 April 1897 at Fannin Co., Texas. Daughter Velma's birth certificate confirms four born and still living in Dec 1903. William's obit says he was survived by his wife and five children. This is puzzling. We have good records for six children and all of them are living in the 1920 census. I originally thought the deceased child was Irene until I tracked down the mysterious 'Mrs. Jones Richardson' in brother Joe's obit. Ruth's obit says they were married in 1895.7,8,6
Census1900*Jewel and William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 8, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 30 yo school teacher William A & 20 yo wife Ruth Lee. Their children Edgar Nye and Joe Lilburn were listed as living with them.9
Census1910Jewel and William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 6, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 15 April 1910, as 40 yo farmer William A & 29 yo Ruth Lee. Their children Edgar Nye, Joe Lilburn, Irene, Velma Evelyn, Vera Mabel and Juanita Mary were listed as living with them.10
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Lloyd M. Pleasant between 1916 and 1920, date based on both parties having had first marriage 14 years prior, perhaps a coincidence but unlikely. Ruth's m1 died in 1918.11
Census1920*Jewel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 9 January 1920, as 37 yo widow Ruth Lee. Her children Velma Evelyn, Vera Mabel and Juanita Mary were listed as living with her.12
Census1930*Jewel and Lloyd appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, enumerated 17 April 1930, as 33 yo auto repair shop machinist Lloyd M & 37 yo awning factory cutter wife Ruth Pleasant.11
Census1940Jewel and Lloyd appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, enumerated 11 April 1940, as 42 yo bus driver & mechanic Llloyd & 59 yo tent and awning manufacturer sewing machine operator Ruth J Pleasant.13
Death*Jewel died on 18 July 1963 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Jones Richardson in Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas, at age 82, of gastric hemorrhage.14,6,2
Burial*She was buried on 20 July 1963 at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2,6
ResearchNote*Research Note re research status. Prior to researching this couple my only reference was Scatterlings. Williams simply says, "Ruth Blair married Hub Lee". The only Hub Lee I've found is Find A Grave memorial no. 72125893. There are no dates. He's buried at Willow Wild in Honey Grove. There's a headstone photo which reads 'Hub and Pansy Lee'.
There is however a marriage between Jewel Ruth Blair and William Addison Lee which looks promising. I worked up an outline of the family, looking for the key which would convince me I had the correct couple. Nothing obvious, e.g. a parent or sibling moving in in a later census. I did find J C Magouirk as the informant on two of this family's birth records. He was Ruth's brother-in-law, husband of her sister Fannie. Hardly a clincher but it is encouraging.
For now I am entering this family as I believe it existed but will entertain the option to cut them free if anyone can show me the error.
Later research provides a death certificate for Ruth Lee Pleasant, d/o E E Blair & Tommie Turner. Did she remarry after Hub's death?4,3

Prof. William A. Lee1,2

M, #2822, b. 5 December 1869, d. 28 March 1918
Last Edited27 Apr 2024
Birth*William was born on 5 December 1869 in Texas. His parents born Alabama & Tennessee according to the 1900 census. In 1910 the states are same but reversed.2,3
Marriage*He married Jewel Ruth Blair, daughter of Elisha Edgar Blair and Sara Thomas "Tommie" Turner, on 21 April 1897 in Fannin Co., Texas. Daughter Velma's birth certificate confirms four born and still living in Dec 1903. William's obit says he was survived by his wife and five children. This is puzzling. Death*William died on 28 March 1918 at his home in near Telephone, Fannin Co., Texas, at age 48, of pneumonia. His obit writes, Prof. Lee was one of the well-known teachers of the county. He had taught at Lamasco, Telephone and other places for many years. Some few years ago he quit teaching to look after his farming interests, which had grown to be considerable. He had one of the best farms in the north end of he county, and he was very successful in its management. He was a first-class citizen in every way, and his death is much to be regretted ... He leaves a wife and five children.1,2
Burial*He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Headstone photo & obit available at Find A Grave. There's a family marker "Lee" which shows in both WA's and wife Ruth's memorials. The type of material and font of the two headstones is identical. However, there's no spousal link at Find A Grave.2
ResearchNote*Research Note re research status. Prior to researching this couple my only reference was Scatterlings. Williams simply says, "Ruth Blair married Hub Lee".
