Margaret Jane Groves1,2,3
F, #4098, b. 12 April 1841, d. 11 October 1876
Birth* | Margaret, daughter of Jonathan Groves and Elizabeth Rebecca Vandegrift, was born on 12 April 1841 in Delaware. Find A Grave gives her birthplace as Philadelphia, 1870 census as PA.1,4,5 |
Census1850 | Margaret appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 3, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of her parents, Jonathan Groves and Elizabeth Rebecca Vandegrift, as 9 yo Margaret J Groves.6 |
Census1860 | Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of White Clay Creek Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of her parents, Jonathan Groves and Elizabeth Rebecca Vandegrift, as 19 yo Margaret Groves.7 |
Marriage* | She married Rev. Benjamin T. String on 24 April 1866. Find A Grave claims they were married in 1856 but I believe that was the approximate year of Benjamin's m1 to Amanda Lnu.1,4 |
Census1870* | Margaret and Benjamin appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Middletown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 12 July 1870, as 38 yo Methodist minister Benjamin & 28 yo wife Jennie String. Their children Mary Eliza, Emma Malhen and William P. "Willie" were listed as living with them.5 |
Death* | Margaret died on 11 October 1876 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, at age 35.8,1,4 |
Burial* | She was buried on 14 October 1876 at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Photo of joint headstone with Benjamin available at Find A Grave. The service was at the Western Methodist Episcopal Church.8,4 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 3 March 2022 re research challenges. The String-Groves family presents a lot of research problems. There aren't many primary sources for Margaret Groves and the secondary sources are contradictory. Issues include, King says Margaret's maiden name was Groves, Find A Grave says Durell. If you believe King then Margaret Groves and Amanda Durrell are two separate people, the 1st & 2nd wifes of Ben. If King is mistaken (unlikely IMO) then they are probably the same person. That makes Ben and all descendants non-relatives and they should be removed from the dB. I've not found either marriage record so this remains a conundrum. If Find A Grave is right with the name Margaret Jane "Jennie" Durrell then who was Amanda, wife of Ben in the 1860 census? Paxson Family says Ben's daughter Mary Eliza's mother was 'M. Jennie String', who could be either this Margaret Jane or the elusive Amanda "Jennie."1,4,9 |
