Birth*Joseph, son of Wilson E. Vandegrift and Mary Sipple Downs, was born on 14 October 1860 in Delaware. The 1900 census says October 1861.2,3,4
BaptismJoseph was baptized on 15 September 1861 at Old Drawyers Church in Odessa, New Castle Co., Delaware.1
Census1870Joseph appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of his parents, Wilson E. Vandegrift and Mary Sipple Downs, as 9 yo Joseph W Vandegrift.5
Census1880Joseph appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware in the household of his parents, Wilson E. Vandegrift and Mary Sipple Downs, as 19 yo Joseph W Vandegrift.6
Marriage*He married Laura A. Farson between 1888 and 1890. My preliminary research suggests their only children were Howard John Farson (1883-1962, m. Beulah Hudson ca. 1913) and Frank Wilson Vandegrift (1892-1922). Howard is usually listed as a step-son but I find no prior marriage for Laura and the Farson surname would be unlikely unless she had married a cousin. In at least one record he's listed as adopted. My guess is he was the son of one of Laura's brothers.
Married 11 years in the 1900 census, 20 years in 1910.4,7
Census1900*Joseph and Laura appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 38 yo farmer Joseph & 44 yo wife Larah A Vandegrift. Their children 16 yo stepson Howard Farson & 7 yo son Frank Vandegrift were listed as living with them.4
Census1910Joseph and Laura appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 49 yo farmer Joseph W & 54 yo wife Laura A Vandegrift. Their children 17 yo son Frank W & 26 yo stepson Howard J Farson were listed as living with them.7
Census1920Joseph and Laura appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of West Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland, enumerated 28 January 1920, as 58 yo farmer Joseph W & 64 yo wife Laura A Vandegrift. Their 28 yo son Frank W Vandegrift, his wife Beulah and son John were listed as living with them.8
Marriage*Their second marriage was to Mary A. Fisher on 22 June 1925. This marriage apparently didn't last as Joseph is again solo head of household in the 1930 census. Mary had m1 someone named McDonald who had died 6 years previously.9
Census1930*Joseph appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Election Dist. 9, Worcester Co., Maryland, as 69 yo widower step-father J W Vandegrift in the household of stepson Howard J Farson, Howard's wife Beulah and their son John Farson.10
Census1940Joseph appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Election Dist. 9, Worcester Co., Maryland, at West Berlin PO, enumerated 24 April 1940, as 79 yo widower Joseph W Vandegrift. His step-son Howard J Farson, Howard's wife Beulah and their son 24 yo son John H Farson were listed as living with him.11
Death*Joseph died on 28 July 1941 at age 80.3
Burial*He was buried on 30 July 1941 at Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin, Worcester Co., Maryland. Find A Grave provides photo of his headstone.12,3
