Achsah Anna Hayes1,2

F, #4223, b. 1841, d. 1887
Last Edited27 Aug 2022
Birth*Achsah was born in 1841 in Maryland. Surname Hays conjectural based on a grandfather Robert H Hays living with John & Achsah in the 1880 census. His grandparents' surnames were Vandyke and Price so Hays would be Achsah's surname or her mother's surname. There is a 17 yo Mary A Hays living with parents Robert M & Eliza Hays in Kent County in the 1860 census. King calls her Mary A Lnu.
Middle name is also a bit iffy. It's simply 'A' in King , Ackuana in 1870 and Achsah in 1880. Given she and John had a daughter Achsah that name seems most likely.
Her Find A Grave memorial as Achsah Anna Vandyke is a plausible blending of options.2,3,4
Marriage*She married John P. VanDyke, son of Thomas VanDyke and Elizabeth Price, on 18 July 1859 in Cecil Co., Maryland. My preliminary research suggests their children were Mary E (1861-a1900), Robert Hayes (1862-, m. Nannie Bell Fulton 1889), Thomas (1863-a1900, m. Regina Rasin 1885), Emma Lula (c1867- , never married), Achsah H (c1871- , m. Townsend "Townie" Crew 1896), Clara Belle (c1873- , m1 Walter Howell Reese 1900, m2 John M E Glenn) and Katie Price VanDyke (c1879- , m. Charles Crew).5
Census1870Achsah and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of 3rd Election Dist., Kent Co., Maryland, enumerated 27 August 1870, as 33 yo farmer John P & 28 yo Ackuana Vandyke. Their children 11 yo Mary, 8 yo Robert, 6 yo Thomas and 3 yo Emma Vandyke were listed as living with them, as well as four farm hands.4
Census1880*Achsah and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Worton, Kent Co., Maryland, enumerated 16 June 1880, as 42 yo farmer J P & 39 yo wife Achsah A Vandyke. Their children 20 yo Mary E, 18 yo Robert H, 16 yo Thomas, 13 yo Emma L, 9 yo Achsah H, 7 yo Clarrie B and 1 yo Katie P Vandyke were listed as living with them, as well as 68yo grandfather Robert H Hays and two servants.3
Death*Achsah died in 1887.2
Burial*She was buried at Chester Cemetery in Chestertown, Kent Co., Maryland. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with husband John.2
