Death* | James died between 1745 and 1766. A second son James was a minor on 6 May 1766 implying birth after 6 May 1745. It's unlikely Stephen and Bathsheba gave James2 his name unless James1 had died.3 |

George Smith1
M, #6741, b. 16 December 1731, d. 11 July 1823
Christening* | George was christened on 16 December 1731 in Chatham, Barnstable Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Pilgrim Hopkins calls this a christening, Mayflower calls this a baptism and Find A Grave gives the birthdate as 16 Dec 1731 in the text but 1732 in the header. The headstone photo doesn't support any particular date.1,2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Barbara Mayo on 16 October 1755 in Chatham, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. Town and Vital is a bit confusing. There's a record for Intents this same date, and another Intents dated 28 Jun 1755. Issue alleged by Find A Grave were Richard (1757-1841), Stephen (1763-1832), Bathsheba (1766-1817), Benjamin (1770-1836) and Barbara (1786-1871). They all look sketchy, especially Barbara when her mother would have been 57 yo. I find no corroborating evidence in the Ancestry databases. It's all too early for any census help.4,1,3 |
Death* | George died on 11 July 1823 in Chatham, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts, at age 91.2,3 |
Burial* | He was buried at Chatham Old Burial Ground in Chatham, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides photo of his headstone.3 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 29 September 2022 re Find A Grave. George's memorial claims a marriage to Naomi Lnu, with daughter Phebe Smith (1765-1853). A birthyear of 1765 is smack in the middle of the births of his children by Barbara so something is fishy.3 |

Marriage* | He married Constance Hopkins, daughter of Stephen Hopkins and Mary Lnu, on 22 May 1627 in probably Plymouth, Plymouth Colony, New England. Stephen Hopkins1
M, #6747, b. April 1581, d. from 6 June 1644 to 17 July 1644
Christening* | Stephen was christened in April 1581 in Upper Clatford, Hampshire, England.1 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Mary Lnu in 1604. My preliminary research suggests their children were Giles and Constanta only, per PHM. PHHS adds Elizabeth, b. 1604 in Hursley, Hampshire, England.1 |
Occupation* | Stephen was a merchant before May 1609 at Hampshire, England.2 |
BioNote* | Biography Note of 1609: PHM writes, 'Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins may have been the same Stephen Hopkins who was on board the Sea Venture, which was shipwrecked in Bermuda in 1609. The Sea Venture was part of a fleet of 9 ships under the command of Sir George Somers and Sir William Gates. Scattered by a hurricane, some of the ships made their way to Jamestown. The Sea Venture, however, was wrecked off Bermuda. The Stephen Hopkins of the Sea Venture (and possibly the Mayflower) was a minister’s clerk who fomented a mutiny on the grounds that the authority of the governor ceased when the ship was wrecked. This Stephen Hopkins was sentenced to death, but pardoned, with reference made to his [unnamed] wife and children. This Stephen Hopkins spent a further two years in the English colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia.3' |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Elizabeth Fisher on 19 February 1617/18 at St. Mary, White Chapel, London, England.1 |
BioNote | Biography Note: PHM writes, 'Stephen Hopkins had positions of responsibility in the Colony. Hopkins and Edward Winslow were chosen to approach Massasoit and Hopkins repeated this duty as emissary. He nevertheless ran afoul of the law several times, for assault, for not properly regulating other people’s alcohol intake, and for overpricing.1 ' |
Estate-Will* | Stephen Hopkins left a will dated 6 June 1644 at Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England, naming his son Caleb sole executor and an heir. Other named heirs were his children Giles, Constance, Deborah, Damaris, Ruth and Elizabeth. Miles Standish and William Bradford were the witnesses.3 |
Death* | Stephen died from 6 June 1644 to 17 July 1644 in Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England.3,1 |
Estate-Inventory | His estate was inventoried on 16 July 1644. Complete listing available at http://www.pilgrimhall.org/pdf/Stephen_Hopkins_Will_Inventory.pdf.3 |
