Birth*Horace, son of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, was born on 11 August 1855 in Harrison Co., Missouri. He's Luther Horace at FSTrees (entry for Luther Horace Allen (1855-1909), ID no. LY2Q-C5T), Horace Luther on his headstone. The 1900 census confirms month, year and birthstate.1,2
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary E. George before 1880, date based on the 1880 census reporitng they had not been married in the calendar year. FSTrees (entry for Luther Horace Allen (1855-1909), ID no. LY2Q-C5T) claims 09 Mar 1876 in Worth Co., Missouri, without citation. See the Research Note below re their probably daughter Effie B Allen.1
Census1880*Horace and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Allen Twp., Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 25 yo Luther & 23 yo Mary Allen.4
Marriage*His second marriage was to Julia Victoria Parman on 25 August 1898 at Worth Co., Missouri. Julia m2 Alfred James Proctor (1865-1942). He has a Find A Grave memorial linked to hers. My preliminary research suggests Luther & Julia's children were Louisa Faye (1899- ), Blondina (c1901- ), Henry Alston (1906-1970), and Horace Luther (1909-1970) Allen.5,1,6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 28 June 2019 re Horace's m1. Find A Grave says it was to Mary Allen on 14 Jul 1887 at Worth Co., MO. FSTrees (entry for Luther Horace Allen (1855-1909), ID no. LY2Q-C5T) says it was to Mary E. George on 9 Mar 1876 in Harrison Co., MO. Did Luther marry two Marys? I've not yet found any primary sources for either marriage.
1880 census : There's a 25 yo Luther with 23 yo wife Mary in Worth Co. His parents' birthstates are way off the mark showing NY & OH when they should be TN & KY. Luther's age and birthstate are good, however.
Effie B Allen : Find A Grave says Luther & Mary had no children but the census record suggests otherwise. In 1900 Luther & Julia show one 6 yo daughter Effie B Allen. Since they were purportedly married in 1898 Effie should be by Luther's m1 to Mary George. In 1910 Julia is a widow and shows 16 yo step-daughter Effie B Allen.1

Census1900*Horace and Julia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 June 1900, as 44 yo farmer Luther & 26 yo wife Julia P Allen. Their daughters 6 yo Effie B and 0.8 yo Louisa F Allen were listed as living with them as well as Luther's mother 70 yo widow Emley Allen. Emily is double-enumerated this census - here and with daughter Elmira.7
Death*Horace died on 25 February 1909 in Harrison Co., Missouri, at age 53.1
Burial*He was buried at Weaver Chapel Cemetery in Hatfield, Harrison Co., Missouri. Joint headstone w/ m2 Julia and portrait photos available at Find A Grave.1

Birth*Elmira, daughter of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, was born on 8 August 1853 in Bethany, Harrison Co., Missouri.1
Marriage*She married George Washington Ballew circa 1870. Married 40 years with 6 born and 5 living in 1910.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Nova Burr (1875-1953, m. Celia E Wise), James Oliver (1881-1966, m. Grace May Hunsicker), Clarence (1883-1883), Lewis Leslie (1885-1973, m. Nora Edna Stewart), Walter Franklin (1887-1970, m. Bessie Pearl Campbell), and Bessie Oral (1888-1946, m1 Elias Mark Bell, m2 Jesse Walter Barrett) Ballew. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials & FSTrees entries for all of them.3,1
Census1880*Elmira and George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 June 1880, as 34 yo farmer Geo W & 25 yo wife Elmira E Ballew. Their 5 yo son Nova B (or Z) Ballew was listed as living with them, as well as Elmira's 50 yo widowed mother Emily Allen and George's 25 yo brother Jacob Ballew.4
Census1900Elmira and George appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 53 yo farmer George W & 46 yo wife Elmira E Ballew. Their children 19 yo James O, 15 yo Lewis L, 13 yo Walter F, and 11 yo Bessie O Ballew were listed as living with them, as well as 71 yo widowed mother-in-law Emily Allen. Note Emily Allen is enumerated here and with her son Horace in same county.5
Census1910Elmira and George appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 May 1910, as 64 yo farmer George W & 56 yo wife Elmira E Ballew. Their 21 yo daughter Bessie O Ballew was listed as living with them. George has 'Jr' tacked onto his name in the index but it's really the 'W' of his middle name.3
Census1920*Elmira appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 5 February 1920, as 65 yo widow Elvira E Ballew. Her 31 yo daughter Bessie O & 40 yo son-in-law Jesse W Barrett were listed as living with her.6
Death*Elmira died on 17 October 1943 in Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri, at age 90.1

Birth*Alice, daughter of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, was born circa 1858 in Missouri. Her middle name per the 1910 census.2
Marriage*She married John Barnabus Hobbs between 1874 and 1878 in Missouri, date based on two census records. In 1900 they've been married 22 years with 4 born and 3 living. In 1910 it's married 36 years, again with 4 and 3. My preliminary research suggests their children were Edward Leroy (1878-1958, m. Frances Ann Denton in 1898), Elsie J (1882-1957, m1 Lon Williams, m2 Fnu Chamberlain, m3 Homer Lane), Martin Burris (1884-1884), and possibly Wanetta/Juanita (c1916- ) Hobbs. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include FSTrees for the first three and Find A Grave Memorial no. 161715791 for Edward.3,4,5
Census1880*Alice and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 21 yo farmer John & 21 yo wife Alice Hobbs. Their 2 yo son Edward was listed as living with them.6
Census1900Alice and John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 June 1900, as 40 yo dentist John & 40 yo wife Alice F Hobbs. A 0.1 yo niece Mary Hobbs was listed as living with them.7
Residence*Alice resided in Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri, on 23 September 1908. In her mother's obit she is mentioned as surviving daughter 'Mrs. Alice Hobbs, of Eagleville'.8
Census1910Alice and John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 May 1910, as 52 yo restaurateur John B & 52 yo wife Florilla Hobbs. Apparently the dentist gig from 1900 didn't work out!9
Census1920Alice and John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, at 112 SE 13th St., enumerated 6 January 1920, as 61 yo John B & 61 yo Alice F Hobbs. Their 3.11 yo daughter Wanetta Hobbs was listed as living with them. If Alice had a child at age 57 it wouldn't be a world record but it's way up there. Perhaps Wanetta is really a niece or grandchild. John's occupation is now car repairman for the railroad - never the same two censuses in a row! Four years later in John's death certificate their address is 114 E 13th St.10
ResidenceAlice resided in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, in 1925. She is in the 1925 Iowa State Census as 64 yo widowed mother-in-law Alice Hobbs in the home of Homer H & Elsie J Lane.11
Census1940*Alice appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, as 81 yo widowed mother-in-law Alice Oats (indexed Dats) in the household of her 57 yo daughter Elsie and 66 yo son-in-law Homer Lane.12
Death*Alice died after 4 April 1940.12
ResearchNote*Research Note of 30 June 2019 re source conflicts. The sources for this family all seem to work but do leave some puzzling questions.
Where is daughter Elsie in 1900-1920? She's with m3 (m4?) Homer Lane in 1930-1940.
What is Alice's surname in the 1940 census when she's widowed and living with Elsie & Homer. It's indexed Dats but looks like Oats to me. Either way I find no marriage record or 1930 census record to support this.
What's up with purported daughter Wanetta (Juanita?) in the 1920 census? It's hard to believe that Alice bore a child ca. age 57. There's an SSDI record for a Juanita Hobbs (1916-1991) but Hobbs is that woman's married surname.

George Washington Ballew1

M, #9367, b. 19 April 1846, d. 28 May 1910
Last Edited8 Apr 2023
Birth*George was born on 19 April 1846 in Howard Co., Missouri, s/o William Wyant Ballew & Mary Ann Taylor.2
Marriage*He married Elmira Eggelstine Allen, daughter of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, circa 1870. Married 40 years with 6 born and 5 living in 1910.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Nova Burr (1875-1953, m. Celia E Wise), James Oliver (1881-1966, m. Grace May Hunsicker), Clarence (1883-1883), Lewis Leslie (1885-1973, m. Nora Edna Stewart), Walter Franklin (1887-1970, m. Bessie Pearl Campbell), and Bessie Oral (1888-1946, m1 Elias Mark Bell, m2 Jesse Walter Barrett) Ballew. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials & FSTrees entries for all of them.3,1
Census1880*George and Elmira appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 June 1880, as 34 yo farmer Geo W & 25 yo wife Elmira E Ballew. Their 5 yo son Nova B (or Z) Ballew was listed as living with them, as well as Elmira's 50 yo widowed mother Emily Allen and George's 25 yo brother Jacob Ballew.4
Census1900George and Elmira appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 53 yo farmer George W & 46 yo wife Elmira E Ballew.
Census1910George and Elmira appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hamilton Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 May 1910, as 64 yo farmer George W & 56 yo wife Elmira E Ballew. Their 21 yo daughter Bessie O Ballew was listed as living with them. George has 'Jr' tacked onto his name in the index but it's really the 'W' of his middle name.3
Death*George died on 28 May 1910 in Harrison Co., Missouri, at age 64.2
Burial*He was buried at Highland Cemetery in Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave. LatLong for this cemetery based on location given at http://sites.rootsweb.com/~moharris/highlandcem.html.2

Last Edited3 Oct 2022
Birth*Mary was born circa 1856 in Iowa, date based on 23 yo in the 1880 census. Find A Grave provides only her first name. FSTrees (entry for Luther Horace Allen (1855-1909), ID no. LY2Q-C5T) includes the middle initial and surname, but without any useful citation.2,1
Marriage*She married Horace Luther Allen, son of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, before 1880, date based on the 1880 census reporitng they had not been married in the calendar year. FSTrees (entry for Luther Horace Allen (1855-1909), ID no. LY2Q-C5T) claims 09 Mar 1876 in Worth Co., Missouri, without citation. See the Research Note below re their probably daughter Effie B Allen.1
Census1880*Mary and Horace appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Allen Twp., Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 25 yo Luther & 23 yo Mary Allen.2
Death*Mary died in 1897.1

Julia Victoria Parman1

F, #9369, b. 1 January 1874, d. 24 September 1964
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Julia was born on 1 January 1874 in Gentry Co., Missouri, d/o Henry A Parman and Sarah Colvin. The 1900 census confirms month, year and birthstate.2,3
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Horace Luther Allen, son of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, on 25 August 1898 at Worth Co., Missouri. Julia m2 Alfred James Proctor (1865-1942). He has a Find A Grave memorial linked to hers. My preliminary research suggests Luther & Julia's children were Louisa Faye (1899- ), Blondina (c1901- ), Henry Alston (1906-1970), and Horace Luther (1909-1970) Allen.4,1,3
Census1900*Julia and Horace appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 June 1900, as 44 yo farmer Luther & 26 yo wife Julia P Allen. Their daughters 6 yo Effie B and 0.8 yo Louisa F Allen were listed as living with them as well as Luther's mother 70 yo widow Emley Allen. Emily is double-enumerated this census - here and with daughter Elmira.5
Census1910*Julia appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Lincoln Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 36 yo widow Julia E Allen. Her children 16 yo Effie B as step-daughter, 10 yo Louisa F, 8 yo Blondina, 4 yo Henry A, and 0.8 yo Horace L Allen were listed as living with her. Everyone born MO.6
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Alfred James Proctor between 1914 and 1920. I'm leaning toward the latter date because of Julia's double enumeration in the 1920 census. This would mean 6 yo son Alfred B in the 1920 is probably not Julia's son.7
Census1920Julia appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Grant City, Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 January 1920, as 45 yo married Mrs. Julia Proctor. Her children 20 yo Faye (or Frya), 17 yo Blondina, 13 yo Alston, and 10 yo Horace were listed as living with her. See Research Note for her double enumeration.8
Census1920*Julia and Alfred appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Worth, Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 17 January 1920, as 53 yo farmer Alfred J & 42 yo wife Julia P Proctor. One child clearly from Alfred's prior marriage was 20 yo Vera H. 6 yo Alfred B Proctor may be Julia's son or from Alfred's prior.7
ResearchNote*Research Note of 29 June 2019 re 1920 census. Julia is enumerated twice in 1920. First as HOH with her four children from her marriage to Allen, but as Mrs. Julia Proctor. Second as wife of Proctor. Both listings are in Worth County.9,7,8

Census1930Julia and Alfred appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Grant City, Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 7 April 1930, as 64 yo farmer Alfred J & 56 yo wife Julia A Proctor.10
Census1940Julia and Alfred appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Grant City, Worth Co., Missouri, enumerated 5 April 1940, as 73 yo Alfred J & 66 yo Julia A Proctor.11
Death*Julia died on 24 September 1964 in Grant City, Worth Co., Missouri, at age 90. Julia's death certificate is a bit odd in that it shows her husband as Alfred J Proctor even though he died 22 years before her. To add to the weirdness she's buried with her m1 Horace Allen.2,3
Burial*She was buried at Weaver Chapel Cemetery in Hatfield, Harrison Co., Missouri. Joint headstone photo w/ m1 Horace is available at Find A Grave. Her name on the headstone is Julia Allen Proctor.3

Birth*Alfred was born on 20 August 1865 in Jo Daviess Co., Illinois, s/o James L & Ann T Proctor, both of England. Find A Grave claims a birthdate of 04 July without citation. I'm going with his death certificate.1,3,2
Marriage*He married Julia Victoria Parman between 1914 and 1920. I'm leaning toward the latter date because of Julia's double enumeration in the 1920 census. This would mean 6 yo son Alfred B in the 1920 is probably not Julia's son.2

John Barnabus Hobbs1,2

M, #9371, b. 4 August 1858, d. 1 December 1924
Last Edited21 Sep 2022
Birth*John was born on 4 August 1858 in Missouri, s/o Ezekiel Burdine Hobbs & Nancy Jane Ballew.3,1
Marriage*He married Alice Florilla Allen, daughter of Horace Alston Allen and Emily Lee Dunkerson, between 1874 and 1878 in Missouri, date based on two census records. 161715791 for Edward.4,2,5
Census1880*John and Alice appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Union Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 21 yo farmer John & 21 yo wife Alice Hobbs. Their 2 yo son Edward was listed as living with them.6
Census1900John and Alice appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 June 1900, as 40 yo dentist John & 40 yo wife Alice F Hobbs. A 0.1 yo niece Mary Hobbs was listed as living with them.7
Census1910John and Alice appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 May 1910, as 52 yo restaurateur John B & 52 yo wife Florilla Hobbs. Apparently the dentist gig from 1900 didn't work out!8
Census1920John and Alice appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, at 112 SE 13th St., enumerated 6 January 1920, as 61 yo John B & 61 yo Alice F Hobbs. Four years later in John's death certificate their address is 114 E 13th St.9
Death*John died on 1 December 1924 in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, at age 66.10,1
Burial*He was buried at Hobbs Chapel Edwards-Hoffman Cemetery in Eagleville, Harrison Co., Missouri. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. LatLong based on cemetery location description aided by Google Maps. It's a bit west of the description but there's definitely a cemetery here.1
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 30 June 2019. See his wife Alice Florilla Allen (c1858-a1940).

Louisa F. Jennings1

Last Edited21 Sep 2022
Birth*Louisa was born in February 1839 in Tazewell Co., Virginia. FSTrees (entry for Louisa F Jennings (1839-1926), ID no. K898-VGH) claims d/o Miles Jennings & Caroline Liney Neill without citation.2,3
Marriage*Her first marriage was to George M. Dunkerson, son of Thomas Dunkerson and Sarah Catherine Palmer, on 29 November 1855 at Harrison Co., Missouri. FSTrees's date is 19 Nov but provides no citation. In the 1900 census Louisa shows 5 born with 0 living.1
Census1860*Louisa and George appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Union Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 7 July 1860, as 28 yo farmer George M & 21 yo Louisa F Dunkerson. Their children William M. and Dora Jane were listed as living with them.3
Census1870Louisa and George appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Red Oak Junction, Montgomery Co., Iowa, enumerated 11 June 1870, as 39 yo blacksmith G M & 30 yo Louisa F Dunkerson. Their children William M. and Dora Jane were listed as living with them.4
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Thomas Laidlaw on 18 December 1883. The obit included in Tom's Find A Grave memorial says he married Mrs. Louisa F. Dunkinson of Bethany, MO this date. FSTrees (entry for Thomas L. Laidlaw (2PHJ-LKV)) claims same date in Bourbon Co., KS, but without citation. There's an Ancestral File record showing Thomas Laidlaw marrying Louisa Drinkmore this date in Bourbon County. I've found no primary sources. Thomas had allegedly m1 Catherine Lnu in 1854.5
Census1900*Louisa and Thomas appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Yates Center, Woodson Co., Kansas, enumerated 11 June 1900, as 70 yo haydealer Thomas & 61 yo wife Louise Laidlaw. One servant was living with them.2

Birth*Thomas was born on 1 February 1829 in Andes, Delaware Co., New York.2

There's an Ancestral File record showing Thomas Laidlaw marrying Louisa Drinkmore this date in Bourbon County. I've found no primary sources. Thomas had allegedly m1 Catherine Lnu in 1854.2
Census1900*Thomas and Louisa appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Yates Center, Woodson Co., Kansas, enumerated 11 June 1900, as 70 yo haydealer Thomas & 61 yo wife Louise Laidlaw. One servant was living with them.3

I find no evidence for this person being John & Eliza's child in the censuses. Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*William was born on 23 November 1869 in Illinois.1,2
Marriage*He married Lenora B. Dunkeson, daughter of John Benton Dunkeson and Eliza Jane Garrison, between 1902 and 1903. My preliminary research suggests their children were William E (c1907- ), Elizabeth L (c1910- ), John D (c1914- ), and possibly 3Sgt Stanley E (1921-1983) Kirke. Married 7 years with 3 born and 2 living in 1910.3,1
Census1910*William and Lenora appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 40 yo fruit wholesaler William F & 35 yo Lenora Kirk. Their children 3 yo William and 0.9 yo Elizabeth Kirk were listed as living with them, as well as 72 yo widowed mother-in-law Eliza Dunkerson, 45 yo widowed sister-in-law Gussie Sandoe, and one servant.3
Census1920William and Lenora appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, enumerated circa 19 January 1920, as 50 yo wholesale produce proprietor Wm S & 40 yo Lenora B Kirke. Their children 30 yo Elizabeth, 26 yo John D, and 18 yo Stanley Kirke were listed as living with them. See Research Note re Stanley.5
Death*William died on 25 April 1956 at age 86.1
Burial*He was buried at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri. Joint headstone photo w/ Lenora B Kirke available at Find A Grave.6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 5 July 2019 re purported son Stanley. He's a puzzle. He first shows up with his parents as an 18 yo son in 1940. He's missing in the 1930 census when he'd be ca. 8 yo, but there is an 8 yo Stanley E Kirke in the home of William & Daisy Voiles in Kansas City in 1930. He's well down the list of names and listed as a son, but of whom? The person above him is lodger Edith Crockett, below is a black servant. His parents' birthstates are correct for William & Lenora. 3Sgt Stanley Kirke has a Find A Grave memorial (81020998) and is buried at Mt. Washington, same as his purported parents.5
