Samuel Arbuckle1

M, #9397, b. between 1781 and 1790
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Samuel was born between 1781 and 1790. FSTrees (Samuel Arbuckle (1782-1831), ID no. 2844-NC4) claims 15 Feb 1782 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., VA, without source citation.2
Marriage*He married Arabella Palmer, daughter of Edward John Palmer and Esther Marron, on 18 March 1812 in Christian Co., Kentucky. The license issued the same day with service performed by Samuel Means. Of the three children I show (Esther, George and Edward) only George is iffy.Other children claimed by FSTrees, all w/o source citations, are Alexander (1823- ), Mary Elizabeth (1830- ) and Arabella Arbuckel (1831- ). I find no primary evidence for any of the last three.3
Census1820*Samuel appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, with a household listed as 10001-1001 as 26-44 yo Saml Arbuckle. Relatives of Sam & Arabella on the same census page include George Torian (TMG 2757, wife Patsy Palmer), Charles McCarty (TMG 2756, wife Ursula Palmer) and Elijah Cravens (TMG 2770, wife Esther Palmer.)4
Census1830Samuel appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Trigg Co., Kentucky, with a household listed as 011000101-0001001 as 40-49 yo Saml Arbuckle. Esther is one bracket too old.2
Death*Samuel died. FSTrees (Samuel Arbuckle (1782-1831), ID no. 2844-NC4) claims 1831 in Christian Co., KY, without source citation. I find no corroborating evidence.
ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 July 2019 re FSTrees. Samuel Arbuckle (1782-1831), ID no. 2844-NC4 & Arabella Palmer (1779-deceased), ID no. KZPY-Q8H, are a mess.
Looked at from Arabella's side things mostly make sense and can be corroborated except for the last three children. From Sam's entry however it's a shambles. It shows an m1 to Elizabeth Edwards in 1807 with children Esther, George, Edward and Alexander all being Elizabeth's issue. These children being Elizabeth's rather than Arabella's are not confirmed by marriage records or censuses.

Birth*Sarah, daughter of Drury Torian and Obedience O. Torian, was born on 23 July 1836 in Kentucky.1,3
Census1840Sarah is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Drury Torian, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4
Marriage*She married John Orr on 3 December 1856 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were John M (1857-1925), William Gish (1867-1942, m. Martha Cook), Clara May (1869-1934, m. Thomas Lee Metcalf), and Jessie B (c1873-1951, m. Clifford William King) Orr. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials for all four. Jessie has a death certificate at Kentucky Death Records, 1911-1965.5,1,3
Census1860*Sarah and John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 6 July 1860, as 30 yo carpenter John & 24 yo Sarah Orr. Their 0.7 yo son John Orr was listed as living with them.6
Census1870Sarah and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 June 1870, as 40 yo carpenter John & 34 yo Sarah Orr. Their children 11 yo John, 3 yo son Gish, and 0.9 yo Clara Orr were listed as living with them.7

The next numbered family is on the next sheet and is 73. Family no. 72 is MIA. Others who are likely in this household include 60 yo aunt Mary McCarty (Mary O Torian, widow of John B McCarty), three servants and two boarders.8
Census1900Sarah and John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 69 yo carpenter John & 63 yo wife Sarah E Orr. Birth*Julia, daughter of William Torian and Julia Burbridge, was born on 6 June 1853 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Tough call. Her KY Births & Christenings entries (all three of them) say 16 Jun 1856. Her headstone says 6 Jun 1853. Her age of 7 yo in the 1860 census supports the year 1853. Perhaps the original record is faint, was mis-read initially and that date has simply been copied ahead. I'm going with the headstone even though the birth record would normally be more reliable.1,4
Census1860Julia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her father, William Torian, as 7 yo Julia Torian.5
Death*Julia died on 9 July 1872 in Caldwell Co., Kentucky, at age 19.1

Marriage*She married Andrew Edwin Owen on 17 February 1848 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Ten children per Lander, though he lists only 7. Andrew's obit says they had ten children, five sons and five daughters, all of whom survived him.
