Jacob Vandegrift Jr.1,2,3
M, #2565, b. 5 January 1797, d. 9 March 1869
Birth* | Jacob, son of Jacob Vandegrift and Jane McWhorter, was born on 5 January 1797 in Delaware. King & Cox both claim 5 June.5,4,3 |
Census1800 | Jacob is probably one of the (an unknown value) males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Jacob Vandegrift, in the 1800 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.6,7 |
Census1810 | Jacob is probably the male under age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Jacob Vandegrift, in the 1810 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.8 |
Census1820 | Jacob is probably one of the two males age 16 to 25 listed in the household of his father, Jacob Vandegrift, in the 1820 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.9 |
Marriage* | He married Eliza A. Derrickson on 10 December 1828 in Virginia. King says they apparently had no children.10,5,4 |
Census1830* | Jacob Vandegrift Jr. may have appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 00001-00001 as 20-29 yo Jacob Vandegrift Jr. His wife Eliza is probably the female 20-29 yo. Both are one bracket too young based on birthdates we show presently. There's a 30-39 yo Jacob Vandegrift in Appoquininimk Hundred (110001-000001) in which both Jacob and wife are the correct age, but they have two boys which are problematic. There's also a 30-39 yo Jacob Vandegrift in St. Georges (0030201-00011). No idea who these latter two families are.11 |
Estate-Settlement | Jacob received $175 in the final settlement of his brother Dr. Francis Vandegrift's estate dated 30 January 1836 at New Castle Co., Delaware.12 |
Estate-Will | Jacob was named an heir in the will of Jacob Vandegrift dated 3 July 1839 at Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.1 |
Death* | Jacob died on 9 March 1869 at age 72.5,4,3 |
Burial* | He was buried at Saint Georges Cemetery in Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware.5 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 25 January 2023 re census analysis. The McWhorter Family Tree at Ancestry shows censuses 1840-50-60 for Jacob. I've not entered them because I'm not sure it's him. He was a widower with no children and no known relatives in any of the three censuses. Here are the details, 1840: indexed Jacob Van Argviss, Saint Georges Hundred, 40-49 yo, p. 298, roll 33, enumerated 0000001-0000001. It's clearly Vandegrift if you know what you're looking at. Eli Biddle, Eliza's first cousin, is at the top of the census page. 1850: indexed Jacob Vandegrift, Saint Georges Hundred, p. 187b, dwelling 55, roll 54, 50 yo farmer. Living with him was 40 yo Ruth Craig and six other unknowns. 1860: indexed Jacob Vandegrift, Middletown PO, Saint Georges Hundred, p. 888, dwelling 1265, roll 96, Leontine McQuater household. |
